Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Survey of London: Whitechapel: Volumes 54 and 55
Book SynopsisThe Survey of London returns to the East End to chronicle Whitechapel, shedding new light on this widely misunderstood district In these volumes, the Survey of London returns to the East End to chronicle Whitechapel, covering Aldgate to Mile End Green, and Brick Lane to Wellclose Square. The name Whitechapel—one of London’s best known—is highly evocative, carrying dark, even mythic associations. These are set aside to present new histories of all the area’s sites and buildings, those standing and many that have gone, in districts that have been repeatedly rebuilt. Abutting the City of London, Whitechapel has, since medieval times, housed commerce and many varied industries. Enriched by centuries of immigration, this area has been “global” for as long as that word has denoted the world and, amidst widespread poverty, some of London’s great institutions have been founded here. In the midst of these landmarks, Whitechapel has seen recent transformation. These volumes bear historical witness with hundreds of superb new photographs and meticulous architectural drawings illustrating detailed accounts of topographical development in accessible prose. They will be an invaluable resource for historians, planners, residents, and the wider public.Distributed for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British ArtTrade Review"A new Survey of London publication always marks a red-letter occasion for the capital’s enthusiasts. In these two astonishing volumes on Whitechapel, the Survey has managed even to excel itself"—Jerry White, The London Journal“Every street is minutely assessed in terms of its architectural and urban form, and social and political history...The Survey has evolved gloriously unto collections of detailed studies of each area of London. It makes an outstanding scholarly contribution to our record and understanding of our capital city."—Jeremy Musson, The Oldie

University of Minnesota Press The Architecture of Disability: Buildings,
Book SynopsisA radical critique of architecture that places disability at the heart of the built environment Disability critiques of architecture usually emphasize the need for modification and increased access, but The Architecture of Disability calls for a radical reorientation of this perspective by situating experiences of impairment as a new foundation for the built environment. With its provocative proposal for “the construction of disability,” this book fundamentally reconsiders how we conceive of and experience disability in our world. Stressing the connection between architectural form and the capacities of the human body, David Gissen demonstrates how disability haunts the history and practice of architecture. Examining various historic sites, landscape designs, and urban spaces, he deconstructs the prevailing functionalist approach to accommodating disabled people in architecture and instead asserts that physical capacity is essential to the conception of all designed space. By recontextualizing the history of architecture through the discourse of disability, The Architecture of Disability presents a unique challenge to current modes of architectural practice, theory, and education. Envisioning an architectural design that fully integrates disabled persons into its production, it advocates for looking beyond traditional notions of accessibility and shows how certain incapacities can offer us the means to positively reimagine the roots of architecture.Trade Review "This book is an urgent and exhilarating manifesto that calls for nothing less than a complete rethinking of architecture. Rather than insisting that architectural forms need to be adjusted to accommodate a greater diversity of impairments, it uses diversities of physical, mental, social, and collective capacities to unlock new ways to conceive of architecture, model it, design it, describe it, represent it, theorize it, and write histories about it. The fictional singular, athletic, male, young, healthy, undamaged, untraumatized, white body at the center of normative architectural discourse finally gives way to a permanently complex philosophical and political agency reshaping the way buildings are thought."—Beatriz Colomina, author of X-Ray Architecture "The Architecture of Disability takes a historically rich, theoretically informed route beyond disability access as a functional problem in architecture (and one often poorly resolved). Reading familiar sites such as the Parthenon alongside lesser-known landscapes of walking, rolling, and embodied presence, David Gissen centers disabled perspectives—including his own—to reveal new theoretical avenues to and poetic journeys through the built world."—Bess Williamson, author of Accessible America: A History of Disability and Design "By placing disability at the heart of the built environment, Gissen provides a radical critique of architecture while conceiving of a new way of experiencing disability."—Metropolis "This book builds on Gissen’s transformative contributions to the discipline with a combination of erudition and accessibility."—Constructs, Yale Architecture "Part manifesto and part memoir, Gissen’s book upends centuries’ worth of dogmatic thinking in architecture by inserting ‘impaired’ and ‘disabled’ bodies into focus, an overdue act, as they have been excluded by the Western canon with very few exceptions to date."—The Architect’s Newspaper "Gissen brings a nuanced critique of the design professions."—The Globe and Mail "It is rare to read a book that relates as deeply to the way you have both lived and thought for the length of your life as this one does for me—and even rarer that it helps you imagine the future of your own thought, too. . . In The Architecture of Disability, author, designer, and educator David Gissen manages to dismantle and reconstruct the world through the combined strength of his own experience and a critical perspective on the material world and its many under acknowledged histories."—Jordan Whitewood-Neal, Winterthur Portfolio "The Architecture of Disability is a poignant call to arms to address the omnipresence of ableism across a broad spectrum of environments."—Architectural Record "The Architecture of Disability uses the lens of disability to reevaluate received architectural histories and speculate on a more inclusive architectural environment, one divested from the inherited biases around function and form."—The New York Review of Architecture "Designers at all scales can take in this slim volume as a set of concepts for reinvigorating their work by productive defamiliarization. For practitioners, Gissen offers ways to see differently, to think differently, and therefore to practice differently."—Landscape Architecture Magazine "Gissen’s thoughtful engagement with theory and history alike clearly demonstrates deficits in the field, outlining how ableism bleeds into just about every practice and principle."—H-Net Reviews

University of South Carolina Press Northern Money, Southern Land: The Lowcountry
Book SynopsisIn the early 1930s Chlotilde R. Martin of Beaufort, South Carolina, wrote a series of articles for the Charleston News and Courier documenting the social and economic transformation of the lowcountry coast as an influx of wealthy northerners began buying scores of old local plantations. Her articles combined the name-dropping chatter of the lowcountry social register with reflections on the tension between past and present in the old rice and cotton kingdoms of South Carolina. Edited by Robert B. Cuthbert and Stephen G. Hoffius, Northern Money, Southern Land collects Martin's articles and augments them with photographs and historical annotations to carry their stories forward to the present day.As Martin recounted, the new owners of these coastal properties ranked among the most successful businessmen in the country and included members of the Doubleday, Du Pont, Hutton, Kress, Whitney, Guggenheim, and Vanderbilt families. Among the later owners are media magnate Ted Turner and boxer Joe Frazier. The plantation houses they bought and the homes they built are some of the most important architectural structures in the Palmetto State--although many are rarely seen by the public. In some fifty articles drawn from interviews with property owners and visits to their newly acquired lands, Martin described almost eighty estates covering some three hundred thousand acres of Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Colleton, and Berkeley counties. Martin's lively sketches included stories of wealthy young playboys who brought Broadway showgirls down for decadent parties, tales of the first nudist colony in America, and exchanges with African American farmhands who wanted to travel to New York to see their employers' primary homes, which they had been assured were piled high with gold and silver. In the process, Martin painted a fascinating landscape of a southern coastline changing hands and on the verge of dramatic redevelopment. Her tales, here updated by Cuthbert and Hoffius, will bring modern readers onto many little-known plantations in the southern part of South Carolina and provide a wealth of knowledge about the history of vexing tensions between development and conservation that remain a defining aspect of lowcountry life.Trade ReviewExpertly researched and richly illustrated, John Bryan's latest contribution to South Carolina's history provides both a chronicle of past achievements and a prelude to future accomplishments, acquisitions, and discoveries at what is one of the Palmetto State's most venerable landmarks and institutions."" - John Sherrer, Historic Columbia""Meticulously researched, this handsome tome explores the complex history of the South Caroliniana Library, weaving together layers of personal stories using collections held by the very institution it seeks to describe. Future scholars will be able to look to this volume for inspiration--and its excellent bibliography!"" - Edward Blessing, South Caroliniana Library

Purdue University Press Habsburg Lemberg: Architecture, Public Space, and
Book SynopsisWhen Austria annexed Galicia during the first partition of Poland in 1772, the province's capital Lemberg was a decaying Baroque town. By the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Lemberg had become a booming city with a modern, urban and, at the same time, distinctly Habsburg flavor. In the process of the ""long"" nineteenth century both Lemberg's appearance and the use of public space changed remarkably. The city center was transformed into a showcase of modernity and a site of conflicting symbolic representations, while other areas were left decrepit, overcrowded and neglected.""Habsburg Lemberg: Architecture, Public Space, and Politics in the Galician Capital, 1772-1914"" reveals that behind a variety of national, and positivist historical narratives of Lemberg - and of its architecture - there always existed a city that was labeled ""cosmopolitan"" yet ""provincial;"" and a Vienna, but still ""of the East."" Buildings, streets, parks and monuments became part and parcel of a complex set of culturally driven politics. The modern architecture influenced the portrayal of the Lemberg populace as much more sophisticated than they actually were.

University of South Carolina Press Jewish Sanctuary in the Atlantic World: A Social
Book SynopsisJewish Sanctuary in the Atlantic World is a unique blend of cultural and architectural history that considers Jewish heritage as it expanded among the continents and islands linked by the Atlantic Ocean between the mid-fifteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Barry L. Stiefel achieves a powerful synthesis of material culture research and traditional historical research in his examination of the early modern Jewish diaspora in the New World. Through this generously illustrated work, Stiefel examines forty-six synagogues built in Europe, South America, the Caribbean Islands, colonial and antebellum North America, and Gibraltar to discover what liturgies, construction methods, and architectural styles were transported from the Old World to the New World. Some are famous--Touro in Newport, Rhode Island; Bevis Marks in London; and Mikve Israel in Curaçao--while others had short-lived congregations whose buildings were lost. The two great traditions of Judaism--Sephardic and Ashkenazic--found homes in the Atlantic World. Examining buildings and congregations that survive, Stiefel offers valuable insights on their connections and commonalities. If both the congregations and buildings are gone, the author re-creates them by using modern heritage preservation tools that have expanded the heuristic repertoire, tools from such diverse sources as architectural studies, archaeology, computer modelling and rendering, and geographic information systems. When combined these bring a richer understanding of the past than incomplete, uncertain traditional historical resources. Buildings figure as key indicators in Stiefel's analysis of Jewish life and social experience, while the author's immersion in the faith and practice of Judaism invigorates every aspect of his work.

Texas A & M University Press All the Houses Were Painted White: Historic Homes
Book SynopsisMany of the historic houses in and around the town of Victoria, Texas, were built between 1875 and 1910 by immigrant owners. From 1973 to 1975, with the support of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Rick Gardner traveled throughout the region, taking photographs of these historic homes. Gardner relied on his own instincts and guidance from knowledgeable locals as to where he should aim his lens. This book is an appreciative glimpse at what these vernacular houses looked like a century after their construction. Gardner has teamed up with Victoria historian and preservationist Gary Dunnam to present these rich images along with brief historical sketches of the houses and, where possible, the persons who occupied them when they were newly constructed. The result is an understated and elegant suggestion of what life may have been like for the merchants, bankers, agriculturalists, and others who built and lived in these homes during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Designed to appeal to those with a love for old houses and especially for the preservation of historic structures, All the Houses Were Painted White offers its readers a stately appreciation of these homes and their place in the South Texas landscape. It is also a tribute to the architects, owners, and anonymous craftspeople who built the houses-to their vision, skill, ingenuity, imagination, creativity, and endurance.

University of Massachusetts Press The Stages of Memory: Reflections on Memorial
Book SynopsisFrom around the world, whether for New York City's 9/11 Memorial, at exhibits devoted to the arts of Holocaust memory, or throughout Norway's memorial process for the murders at Utøya, James E. Young has been called on to help guide the grief stricken and survivors in how to mark their losses. This poignant, beautifully written collection of essays offers personal and professional considerations of what Young calls the ""stages of memory,"" acts of commemoration that include spontaneous memorials of flowers and candles as well as permanent structures integrated into sites of tragedy. As he traces an arc of memorial forms that spans continents and decades, Young returns to the questions that preoccupy survivors, architects, artists, and writers: How to articulate a void without filling it in? How to formalize irreparable loss without seeming to repair it?Richly illustrated, the volume is essential reading for those engaged in the processes of public memory and commemoration and for readers concerned about how we remember terrible losses.

Book SynopsisIntegrative Design: Building Systems for Architects and Architectural Engineers helps students envision the interconnections between different building systems. Rather than presenting systems one at a time as is traditionally done, the book approaches building systems by following the real-world sequence of the design process. This begins with pre-design analysis followed by schematic design and finishes with design development.Section 1 deals with urban and suburban site analysis and design, as well as climate, time, and magnetic declination. Section 2 addresses building form and envelope design, specifically considerations for life safety codes, energy conservation, and roof design. It also covers floor planning with emphasis on systems planning. Section 3 is devoted to design development, including critical sections, envelope design, environmental control systems, service systems design and coordination, and reflected ceiling plans. The second edition features updates to building codes throughout the text, as well as refreshed content in each chapter. The organization of Integrative Design clarifies the design process, enabling success in the classroom and design studio and a smooth transition to the professional world. This book can be used in any course that addresses the integrative design requirement of the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

University of Tennessee Press Constructing Image, Identity, And Place:
Book SynopsisAlthough vernacular architecture scholarship has expanded beyond its core fascination with common buildings and places, its attention remains fixed on the social function of building. Consistent with this expansion of interests, Constructing Image, Identity, and Place includes essays on a wide variety of American building types and landscapes drawn from a broad geographic and chronological spectrum. Subjects range from examinations of the houses, hotels and churches of America’s colonial and Republican elite to analyses of the humble cottages of Southern sharecroppers and mill workers, Mississippi juke joints, and the ephemeral rustic arbors and bowers erected by Civil War soldiers. Other contributors examine or reexamine the form of early synagogues in Georgia, colonial construction technologies in the Chesapeake, the appropriation and use of storefront windows by San Francisco suffragists, and the evolution of the modern factory tour. Other decidedly twentieth-century topics include the impact of the automobile on American building forms and landscapes, including parkways, drive-in movie theaters, and shopping malls. Drawn from the Vernacular Architecture Forum conferences of 1998 and 1999, these seventeen essays represent the broad range of topics and methodologies current in the field today. The volume will introduce newcomers to the breadth and depth of vernacular architecture while also bringing established scholars up to date on the field’s continued growth and maturation. The Editors: Alison K. Hoagland is associate professor of history and historic preservation at Michigan Technological University. Kenneth A. Breisch is director of Programs in Historic Preservation at the University of Southern California. He is author of Henry Hobson Richardson and the Small Public Library in America. The Contributors: Shannon Bell, Robert W. University of Tennessee Press Invitation to Vernacular Architecture: A Guide to
Book SynopsisInvitation to Vernacular Architecture: A Guide to the Study of Ordinary Buildings and Landscapes, is a manual for exploring and interpreting vernacular architecture, the common buildings of particular regions and time periods. Thomas Carter and Elizabeth Collins Cromley provide a comprehensive introduction to the field.Proposing a methodology, Invitation to Vernacular Architecture provides a systematic approach to vernacular architecture fieldwork. The authors walk readers through the process of examining and documenting a building, explaining in detail how to define a research area and create a research plan. They guide students step-by-step in how to take accurate measurements of sites and of building exteriors and interiors and explain what to look for at each level. They show how to find patterns and how to organize information to yield sound interpretations of buildings’ meanings. As a complement to this practical approach, Carter and Cromley present current scholarship on vernacular architecture and explain the need for a broad theoretical perspective. They show how analysis of facts related to a building can reveal important insights into the behavior and culture of people who lived in a certain area at a certain time. The authors then present a single ordinary house as a case study to explore the different points of view that scholars have brought to the study of vernacular architecture.Rich with illustrations and written in a clear and jargon-free style, Invitation to Vernacular Architecture is an ideal text for courses in architecture, material culture studies, historic preservation, American studies, and history, and a useful guide for anyone interested in the built environment.

Temple University Press,U.S. Forgotten Philadelphia: Lost Architecture of the
Book SynopsisHow does a landmark become, after just a few generations, a landfill? In Forgotten Philadelphia, Thomas Keels takes the reader through a lavishly illustrated journey through three centuries of Philadelphia's architecture: what was built, how the public perceived the value of certain buildings, and why those buildings were eventually demolished. In writing that celebrates Philadelphia past without ever being sentimental, Keels describes a city that was always reinventing itself, filled with people who always had a very measured view of the worth and beauty of its public architecture.Trade Review"For the first time, Forgotten Philadelphia places the lost architecture of the City of Brotherly Love into the widest possible context. Keels draws on the rich political, social, cultural, and intellectual history of the city in ways that explain the forces that created the lost buildings and the forces that led to their demise. In the process he illuminates the history of Philadelphia architecture at the same time that he uses its lost architecture as an important source for understanding the evolution of the city." David Contosta, Chestnut Hill College, author of Suburb in the City: Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia 1850-1990 "a luscious collection of drawing and black-and-white photos of building s that no longer exist with lively description of what they were like when they did...anyone with a stake in the city's future should have a copy of this book by their bedside...it's a must." Philadelphia Weekly "For architecture, history and Philly buffs, it's an indispensible volume...[T]he 'Projected Philadelphia' chapter [may be] the most compelling...Looking at these beautiful architectural drawings is like walking directly into the province of dreams, and their pure optimism - the sense of their rightness - provides this book with a melancholy-tinged but fitting finale." The Jewish Exponent "A handsome volume...Not for nearly half a century...have we seen such a compilation of great departed buildings... There are good, important stories with good, familiar pictures." Nineteenth Century "This is a lavishly illustrated, tightly written coffee-table book, full of fascinating nuggets...Thanks to Keels' efforts, those lost buildings won't be forgotten." Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "This book joins a small collection of architectural histories, useful for preservationists...which shift the focus from a building's conception to an examination of the forces that led to its death. A cautionary reminder that a culture is remembered for both what it creates and what it destroys. Summing Up: Recommended." Choice "The second half of Forgotten Philadelphia makes an important contribution to our appreciation of what Philadelphia recently lost... General readers with an interest in Philadelphia and preservationists alike will be turning to this book for years to come. Also unlike many books of photographs and postcards that have appeared in recent years, Forgotten Philadelphia is well organized and attractively formatted. It is also thoroughly indexed, and the repositories holding the original photographs, prints and drawings reproduced here are clearly identified--a lesson yet to be learned by many publishers." The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography "Encyclopedic in scope and brimming with narrative detail, Forgotten Philadelphia presents a fascinating...account of significant Philadelphia buildings that have fallen to the wrecking ball...The book will be of interest not only to historians of Philadelphia, but also more generally to architectural historians, preservationists, and geographers...[T]he book is engagingly written and brings together an impressive array of evidence and detail." ISTE Ltd. Development and the Sustainable City The Limits
Book SynopsisThis book examines the city and its rapid growth, as well as the sustainability issues it poses, in several ways. First, there is a critical approach to development, as expressed by the concept of sustainable development. The city, as a complex system, primarily refers to questions of sustainability performance, which we believe to be capable of resolving problems and difficulties, even when viewed from a local perspective, and therefore from the point of view of the areas in which it must act. Lastly, the issue of sustainability cannot be addressed without contemplating and concluding how acceptable it is to the populations concerned. All challenges raised by the urban character of the city are therefore linked to the more general question of how to define the concept of sustainable development and the sustainable city as a key area of concern.
