MIT Press Ltd The Hero of Doubt
Book SynopsisThe first English anthology of the writings of a critical figure in the history of modern architecture in Europe.The first English anthology of the writings of the British-Italian architect, editor, critic, and educator Ernesto Rogers (1909?1969), The Hero of Doubt showcases the intellectual power and scope of one of the most influential yet, paradoxically, unrecognized exponents of the modern movement in Europe. These essays, edited by Roberta Marcaccio and newly translated from the Italian, reveal how, more than any other architect of the twentieth century, Rogers positioned himself as a mediator between the heroic generation of the modern masters and the younger intellectuals who went on to shape the contextualist turns of architectural postmodernism in the 1970s.The texts in this volume cover a period of 33 years, from Rogers?s initial adherence to fascism and his subsequent struggle as a Jewish intellectual after the proclamation of the racial purity laws, to his poignant post-war reflections on the issues of reconstruction, the education of the architect and, more broadly, the architect?s role in society. Tracing his nuanced critique of the excesses and inadequacies of both fascism and the utopianism of modernism, the writings show how, over time, Rogers?s ideas resonated through the post-war cultural scene in Italy and beyond. In sum, they fill an obvious lacuna within the history of the modern movement and provide a more layered understanding of postmodernity.This project has been made possible by generous grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and the Architectural Association, School of Architecture.

MIT Press Albert Kahn Inc.
Book SynopsisA study of Albert Kahn Incorporated—the architecture firm closely associated with the Ford Motor Company and other auto companies—that explores capitalism and political economy through the built environment of industry and culture.In Albert Kahn Inc. Claire Zimmerman provides a history of second-wave industrialization associated with the growth and development of the United States auto industry and its global footprint. A forensic analysis of the “architects of Ford,” the book theorizes how building and capitalism intersected in the case of twentieth-century industrial buildings, but also in other kinds of architecture and in the built environment writ large. Generally a marginal subject in histories of architecture, industrialism here exposes the expansionist modern project in Western architecture and culture, which was based on natural resource extraction and labor exploitation. MIT Press Ltd The Monster Leviathan
Book SynopsisVisionary proposals for a mythic and strange architecture—or anarchitecture—through which we can imagine other and better worlds.Lurking under the surface of our modern world lies an unseen architecture—or anarchitecture. It is a possible architecture, an analogous architecture, an architecture of anarchy, which haunts in the form of monsters that are humans and machines and cities all at once; or takes the form of explosions, veils, queer, playful spaces, or visions from artwork and video games. In The Monster Leviathan, Aaron Betsky traces anarchitecture through texts, design, and art of the twentieth and early twenty-first century, and suggests that these ephemeral evocations are concrete proposals in and of themselves. Neither working models nor suggestions for new forms, they are scenes just believable enough to convince us they exist, or just fantastical enough to open our eyes.The Monster Leviathan gives students and lovers

MIT Press Ltd Also Known As
Book SynopsisAn exploration of conceptual frameworks common to architecture and digital media.Also Known As offers analogies between objects and architecture, finding shared structures in physical things and architectural ideas, to render ideas relevant to a broad design audience. In this collection of written and visual work, Michelle JaJa Chang bridges conceptual frameworks found in architectural design and contemporary representation to examine design technology?s social, material, and political effects. In architectural practice, where visual representation typically precedes building, techniques like drawing and imaging do not merely structure appearances. They are schemas, or organizational theories, connecting the abstract to the real. Buildings evidence representation?s abilities to show how something is (through description) and how things should be (through projection).Also Known As is a book in fragments. Some ideas are examined in depth, in essay form, while others are explored as anecdotal discoveries. Longer essays begin with a description of an object or phenomenon outside of architecture (e.g., a surveillance blimp, ancient bowls, a cartoon) in the manner of case reports. Observations on curious objects and events are also occasions to consider more complex systems in architecture. Richly illustrated and accompanied by an afterword by architect Jesús Vassallo, Also Known As offers a unique perspective for readers interested in architecture, media, computation, design, and arts from the informed perspective of a practitioner.

Book SynopsisEnvironmental and Architectural Psychology: The Basics is a jargon-free and accessible introduction to the relationship between people and their natural and built environment.Exploring everything from the effectiveness of open plan offices to how people respond to life-threatening disasters, the book addresses issues around sustainability, climate change, and behaviour, and is grounded in theory and ideas drawn from psychology, geography, and architecture. Author Ian Donald introduces both the theoretical underpinnings and the applications of environment-behaviour research to solving real world problems, encouraging readers to reflect on the role of design and policy in shaping the environments in which they live and work. With chapters considering the impact of environment on identity, wellbeing, crime, and spatial behaviour, Donald shows us not only how people shape and affect the environment, but also in turn how the environment shapes and affects peopleâs thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Addressing some of the most important questions of our time, including how behaviour drives climate change, and what we can do about it, this is the ideal book for anyone interested in the interactions between architecture, the environment, and psychology. Trade Review"It is really exciting to see this book. At a time when environmental psychology is moving more towards addressing important and challenging issues of sustainability some of the fields critical contributions to architectural psychology can sometimes be left behind. This book brings some of the key concepts, models and theories within the field of Architectural Psychology into the 21stcentury and shows that these are still key concepts with significant importance in today’s world – both from a scientific and practical perspective. This book is an important read for psychologists, architects, designers and environmentalists alike. I will certainly recommend it as essential reading to our Environmental Psychology masters and PhD students." - Professor Birgitta Gatersleben, Professor of Environmental Psychology, Director of Environmental Psychology Research Group, Programme Leader for MSc Environmental Psychology, University of Surrey, UK"This book provides the ingredients for understanding human behaviour in its broadest social and spatial dimensions. The author draws on his years of accumulated scientific experience, presenting environmental psychology’s interpretation of human behaviour in many settings. Each topic opens a conversation in which the meanings of spatial behaviour in different contexts are discussed. In doing this, the reader is given a harmonious, pertinent and challenging analysis of current environmental and urban issues. This is an expertly constructed reference book for both present and future generations of environmental psychologists." - Professor Ricardo García Mira, Professor of Social Psychology, Leader of the People-Environment Research Group, Universidade da Coruña, Spain. Book SynopsisThis book explores and debates the urban transformations that have taken place in Vienna over the past 30 years and their consequences in policy fields such as labour and housing, political and social participation and the environment. Historically, European cities have been characterised by a strong association between social cohesion, quality of life, economic ambition and a robust State. Vienna is an excellent example for that. In more recent years, however, cities were pressured to change policy principles and mechanisms in the context of demographic shifts, post-industrial transformations and welfare recalibration which have led to worsened social conditions in many cities. Each chapter in this volume discusses Vienna's responses to these pressures in key policy arenas, looking at outcomes from the context-specific local arrangements. Against a theoretical framework debating the European city as a model of inclusion and social justice, authors explore the local capacity to innoTable of Contents1. Is Vienna still a just city? CRC Press Computer Aided Design Guide for Architecture
Book SynopsisRecent years have seen major changes in the approach to Computer Aided Design (CAD) in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) sector. CAD is increasingly becoming a standard design tool, facilitating lower development costs and a reduced design cycle. Not only does it allow a designer to model designs in two and three dimensions but also to model other dimensions, such as time and cost into designs.Computer Aided Design Guide for Architecture, Engineering and Construction provides an in-depth explanation of all the common CAD terms and tools used in the AEC sector. It describes each approach to CAD with detailed analysis and practical examples. Analysis is provided of the strength and weaknesses of each application for all members of the project team, followed by review questions and further tasks. Coverage includes: 2D CAD 3D CAD 4D CAD nD modelling Building Information Modelling paTable of Contents1. Introduction to CAD for the AEC/FM Industry 2. Taylor & Francis Spatial Agency Other Ways of Doing Architecture
Book SynopsisThis book offers the first comprehensive overview of alternative approaches to architectural practice. At a time when many commentators are noting that alternative and richer approaches to architectural practice are required if the profession is to flourish, this book provides multiple examples from across the globe of how this has been achieved and how it might be achieved in the future. Particularly pertinent in the current economic climate, this book offers the reader new approaches to architectural practice in a changing world. It makes essential reading for any architect, aspiring or practicing. Trade Review"Spatial Agency is a timely and uplifting treatise on the successful ways that architects have addressed some of society’s most vexing global problems. With compelling analysis, richly illustrated by inspiring examples of transformative spatial solutions, the authors argue persuasively that the consequences of architecture are as important as the objects of architecture. This accessibly written book is a must read for anyone seeking an ethical understanding of the role of spatial production in the human struggle to create a democratic and sustainable existence." – Leslie Kanes Weisman, Emerita Professor of Architecture, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and author of Discrimination by Design: A Feminist Critique of the Man-Made Environment (University of Illinois Press)"Spatial Agency’s lively entry into the discourse around spatial practice, subjectivity and alterity, inspired by the introduction of Henri Lefebvre and feminist theory into architecture in the mid 1990s, asserts the importance of the concept of agency for understanding architecture’s counter-culture over the past 30 years. This succinct and stylish handbook provides the reader with an essential resource for grasping the extraordinarily diverse range of ethical architectural practice. Here is a truly global map of inspiring ‘spatial agents’ who collectively define architecture – against the grain." – Jane Rendell, Vice Dean of Research at the Bartlett, UCL, and author of Art and Architecture (2006), Site-Writing (2010) and co-editor of Critical Architecture (2007)"Ultimately this is a valuable book for those interested in pursuing alternatives to traditional architecture, those searching for ideas about how to make positive change when other means are not available, and for those gauging the state of architecture today." – Archidose“The book presents, from an easy and open approach, different ways of understanding the new ways of doing architecture. In all cases it is evident that the spatial production does not imply exclusively to architects and development possibilities are endless. An optimistic crisis for architecture.” – Arquilecturas"‘A timely study that raises vital issues for the future’. Such were the words recently used by the Royal Institute of British Architects in announcing its decision to award the 2011 RIBA President’s Award for Outstanding University-located Research to Spatial Agency: Other Ways of Doing Architecture, the book edited by Nishat Awan and Tatjana Schneider of the University of Sheffield, and Jeremy Till of the University of Westminster... Amid the rhetoric that often surrounds these events, the succinct description does indeed do justice to the work compiled by the three academics and the intellectual platform supporting it. A reflective analysis of the various ways of contributing to change in the built environment outside the canonical plots of professional practice, Spatial Agency tackles some of the central tenets of architecture as a discipline, asking whether these in fact maintain currency for both the profession and the built environment." - Paolo Tombesi, Construction Management and Economics, September 2012Table of Contents1. Dover Publications Inc. The Seven Lamps of Architecture
Book SynopsisI believe architecture must be the beginning of arts, and that the others must follow her in their time and order; and I think the prosperity of our schools of painting and sculpture, in which no one will deny the life, though many the health, depends upon that of our architecture. ? John Ruskin.In August of 1848, John Ruskin and his new bride visited northern France, for the gifted young critic wished to write a work that would examine the essence of Gothic architecture. By the following April, the book was finished. Titled The Seven Lamps of Architecture, it was far more than a treatise on the Gothic style; instead, it elaborated Ruskin''s deepest convictions of the nature and role of architecture and its aesthetics. The book was published to immediate acclaim and has since become an acknowledged classic.The seven lamps are Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory, and Obedience. In delineating the relationship of these terms to architecture, Ruskin distinguishes between architecture and mere building. Architecture is an exalting discipline that must dignify and ennoble public life. It must preserve the purity of the materials it uses; and it must serve as a source of power and renewal for the society that produces it. The author expounds these and many other ideas with exceptional passion and knowledge, expressed in a masterly prose style.Today, Ruskin''s timeless observations are as relevant as they were in Victorian times, making The Seven Lamps of Architecture required reading for architects, students, and other lovers of architecture, who will find in these pages a thoughtful and inspiring approach to one of man''s noblest endeavors.This authoritative edition includes excellent reproductions of the 14 original plates of Ruskin''s superb drawings of architectural details from such structures as the Doge''s Palace in Venice, Giotto''s Campanile in Florence, and the Cathedral of Rouen.

Thames & Hudson Ltd Stalins Architect
Book SynopsisThe first biography to trace the remarkable life and career of Ukrainian-born Boris Iofan, beautifully illustrated with many of Iofanâs previously unseen sketchbooks and photographs from private collections. This is a history of architecture, politics and power. Boris Iofan (1891â1976) made his mark as Stalinâs architect, both in the grand projects he achieved, such as the House on the Embankment, a megastructure of 505 homes for the Soviet elite, and through his unbuilt designs, in particular the Palace of the Soviets, a baroque Stalinist dream whose iconic image was reproduced throughout the Soviet Union. Iofanâs life and designs offer a unique perspective into the politics of twentieth-century architecture and the history of the Soviet Union.Trade Review'Gorgeous pencil sketches … a breezy and readable text accessible to a broader, non-specialist audience … [Sudjic] deals with the cascade of names and denunciations, political shifts and relationships with agility and ease' - Edwin Heathcote, The Art Newspaper'Deyan Sudjic conveys Iofan’s story in captivating fashion. The 100 photographs and drawings that accompany Sudjic’s text evoke something of the nature of the Stalinist era and the oppressive atmosphere in which Iofan lived and worked. Reading this cultural biography, you learn as much about Jewish life in Odessa in the late-19th and early-20th century, and the later strictures of Stalinist Russia, as you do about Iofan’s architectural prowess, so the book certainly has a broader interest too' - Beth Williamson, Art Studio international'A fine biography of Boris Iofan' - Jonathan Meades, The Critic'A forensic examination of Iofan’s work and private communications' - Literary Review'Sudjic tells [Iofan's] story with brio' - Financial Times'Sudjic’s book is a useful introduction to Iofan’s life and work … As Sudjic writes, the second half of Iofan’s career is “a cautionary tale of how damaging it can be to come close to political power, especially for an architect negotiating an accommodation with tyranny”' - New English Review

University of California Press Electrographic Architecture
Book SynopsisBridging histories of technology, media studies, and aesthetics, Electrographic Architecture forges a critical narrative of the ways in which illuminated light and color have played key roles in the formation of America's white imaginary. Carolyn L. Kane charts the rise of the country's urban advertisements, light empires, and neoclassical buildings in the early twentieth century; the midcentury construction of polychromatic electrographic spectacles; and their eclipse by informatically intense, invisible algorithms at the dawn of the new millennium. Drawing on archival research, interviews, and visual analysis, Electrographic Architecture shows how the development of America's electrographic surround runs parallel to a new paradigm of power, property, and possession.Table of ContentsContents List of Illustrations Introduction: White like No Other 1. Taylor & Francis How Designers Think
Book SynopsisHow Designers Think is based on Bryan Lawson's many observations of designers at work, interviews with designers and their clients and collaborators. This extended work is the culmination of forty years' research and shows the belief that we all can, and do, design, and that we can learn to design better. The creative mind continues to have the power to surprise and this book aims to nurture and extend this creativity. Neither the earlier editions, nor this book, are intended as authoritative prescriptions of how designers should think but provide helpful advice on how to develop an understanding of design.In this fourth edition, Bryan Lawson continues to try and understand how designers think, to explore how they might be better educated and to develop techniques to assist them in their task. Some chapters have been revised and three completely new chapters added. The book is now intended to be read in conjunction with What Designers Know which is a companion volume. Some oTrade Review'An extremely readable book, due in part to the soundbite-sized chapters'Architects Journal, 19.01.06"There is no set path to beautiful design, and as designers we are always moving forward, looking for the next problem to solve. Lawson reminds us, however, that taking the time to engage the issues comprehensively leads to more well-rounded, and ultimately better finished products. As such, developing a solid set of foundation skills and methods are of the utmost importance, permeating into other work and yielding stronger results." — Jeremy Senko, Spacing MagazineReviews of previous editions:'It has a great virtue of being thorough and readable... excellent bibliography.'Built Environment'This book makes a valuable, if individualistic contribution to the literature of design theory.'Science and Technology Press'The author succeeds in demystifying his subject for the lay reader.'New Scientist'The chapters are well written in a readable form and packed full of data undeniably valuable to students.'ASI Journal'Its success is well deserved, because it is clearly written, the arguments are logically presented, and the design process is indeed demystified.'Architectural Science ReviewTable of ContentsPart 1 What Is Design?; Chapter 1 Introduction; Chapter 2 The Changing Role of the Designer; Chapter 3 Route Maps of the Design Process; Part 2 Problems and Solutions; Chapter 4 The Components of Design Problems; Chapter 5 Measurement, Criteria and Judgement in Design; Chapter 6 A Model of Design Problems; Chapter 7 Problems, Solutions and the Design Process; Part 3 Design Thinking; Chapter 8 Types and Styles of Thinking; Chapter 9 Creative Thinking; Chapter 10 Guiding Principles; Chapter 11 Design Strategies; Chapter 12 Design Tactics; Chapter 13 Design Traps; Chapter 14 Designing with Others; Chapter 15 Design as Conversation and Perception; Chapter 16 Towards a Model of Designing;
