Book SynopsisThe Werkgruppe Graz designed the terraced housing estate in Graz-St. Peter in 1965, during a period of societal upheaval. The complex was eventually built between 1972 and 1978. The planning group—members of the avant-garde artists’ association Forum Stadtpark—took a stand against the established system of residential construction, which was characterized by monotone design and the urban sprawl of single-family homes. Instead, they championed the utopian approach of involving residents in the planning process, which was reflected in the development’s basic structuralist framework with adaptable living units. Comprised of four terraced housing blocks in exposed concrete at the edge of Graz, the estate’s sculptural, brutalist appearance received international acclaim. Gelebte Utopie is the first book to provide a collection of texts of architectural commentary and context on the settlement. It additionally offers insights into the inhabitants’ living spaces and is enriched with artistic projects.

There could hardly be a more timely book when breathing walls, like bodies, are places where experiences of necessity meet those of freedom."-- "David Leatherbarrow, University of Pennsylvania" "The Porch displays the best traits of university press books: an enormous body of research, backed by years of careful engagement with intellectual and cultural history, and a faith that the world is worth close consideration. Hailey's prose is patient and deliberate, the mood reverent and ready for wonder. He has written an extraordinary book--literary and philosophical, sensuous and wise--a book with which to confront our changing world." -- "Daegan Miller, author of 'This Radical Land'"Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisThe first scholarly book dedicated to this Canadian landmark, Casa Loma brings to light a wealth of hitherto unpublished archival images and documentation of the house’s visual and material culture, weaving together a textured account of the design, use, and life of this unique building over the course of the twentieth century.Trade Review“Collaborative and archive-based, this thought-provoking kaleidoscope of ideas, images, and documentary materials will provide the foundation for all future investigations of this unique Canadian site. The story of the multifaceted lives of Casa Loma enriches our understanding of the wide-ranging ways in which historical monuments of art and architecture have been shaped, perceived, and subsequently reappropriated by later generations to serve contemporary needs.” Kathryn Brush, University of Western Ontario“Sir Henry Pellatt’s Casa Loma has been loved and loathed since before shovels even went into the ground in the early twentieth century. Designed with the most modern of touches, the imitation castle was never completed, and its builder died with little to his name other than a tarnished reputation. While largely misunderstood, their combined story is a fascinating one, now told with new rigour and archival insight in a wonderful collection of essays … .” Literary Review of Canada

Book SynopsisUnlocking the history of the British home, this book reveals how its layout has evolved from the Stone Age to the present day. From modest ancient dwellings and medieval merchants' houses to imposing stately mansions and modern urban estates, the book explores the forces that have shaped these homes.Trade Review'A very readable and attractive book, and managers to be totally accessible to the non-specialist, without patronising the knowledgeable reader-indeed its themes and ideas a stimulating for all. (C2O Magazine, June 2012) 'Beautifully written and illustrated (RIBA Journal, July 2012) Stunning colour photographs are accompanied by detailed layout plans and drawing an accessible and entertaining read.' (Journal iof the Islington Archaeology & History Society, July 2012) 'Well-illustrated and fluently written.' (Country Life, 8th August) An illuminating book for those with even a passing interest in domestic architecture, this is a book to refer to again and again. (House & Garden, November 2012) The Life of the British Home is neither a coffee table book nor a guide book. Lavishly illustrated and beautifully presented, it advances a new perspective on a subject that, elsewhere, has a tendency to look tired and repetitive. Book SynopsisWhile the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, and their contemporaries frequently influences our ideas about house design at the midcentury, most Americans during this period lived in homes built by little-known builders who also served as developers of the communities. Often dismissed as "little boxes, made of ticky-tacky," the tract houseTrade ReviewWinner of the 2016 PROSE Award in Architecture & Urban Planning, Association of American Publishers Winner of the 2016 Historic Preservation Book Prize, University of Mary Washington's Center for Historic Preservation Winner of the 2015 Athenaeum Literary Award (for Art and Architecture), The Athenaeum of Philadelphia "In Houses for a New World, the Bryn Mawr professor emerita Barbara Miller Lane investigates the output of a dozen lesser-known tract house developers in four diverse regions--New England, the mid-Atlantic, the Midwest, and Southern California--and treats the period's typical Cape Cods, ranches, and split-levels with the serious formal analysis once reserved for high-style architecture... Her tour de force of research is all the more impressive because she has assembled documentation akin to that previously available on the residential work of important postwar figures such as Richard Neutra, William Wurster, and Marcel Breuer but largely overlooked for builders other than the Levitts."--Martin Filler, New York Review of Books "Lane uses original research, images, plans, and maps to illustrate the American suburb."--Shannon Sharpe, Metropolis "To her credit, Ms. Lane stoutly rebuts ... Slurs, encapsulated in the popular song about 'Little boxes made of ticky tacky' and shows that 'these generalizations were largely false'. Far from being the refuge of white middle-class 'Men in the Gray Flannel Suit,' their neurotic wives and delinquent children, and built by 'rapacious entrepreneurs, in the business of wringing the last penny out of substandard construction,' the houses were well-built and generously equipped and the developments by and large models of societal inclusiveness... [T]hey represent a lost golden age of opportunity."--Martin Rubin, Washington Times "Illuminating."--Anthony Paletta, The Daily Beast "The architecture profession has long criticized mass-produced housing in the suburbs for lacking artistic design and sophistication. Lane's book puts this argument in perspective... Readers seeking a historical overview of this unique era in American homebuilding should enjoy this book."--Katherine Salant, Urbanland "In her book Houses for a New World, architectural historian Barbara Miller Lane rises to the defense of these split levels of the past. Her arguments are compelling, in part because we look back with nostalgia to a time when the hardworking middle class could afford simple homes with mortgages that weren't made of empty promises."--Julie Michaels, ArchitectureBoston "This book presents a significant portion of the history of everyday American life in a manner that is deeply researched, intuitive, insightful, and frequently self-referential. It is copiously illustrated with contemporary photographs and images derived from developers' sales brochures and popular housing literature."--ChoiceTable of ContentsA Personal Note vii Acknowledgments ix PROLOGUE Paraphrases of Original Buyers' Recollections 1 CHAPTER 1 New Houses and New Communities 3 CHAPTER 2 West Coast Builders: Los Angeles and Orange County 47 CHAPTER 3 East Coast Builders: Philadelphia and Boston 93 CHAPTER 4 The Builders of Chicago's Golden Corridor: Midwestern Ranches and Splits 139 CHAPTER 5 The Buyers, Their Backgrounds, and Their Preferences 187 CHAPTER 6 Conclusion: Houses and Suburbs Transformed 221 Appendix 1. Many of us go with grand hopes of finding something revelatory—we’re not sure what—that will make us feel closer to the person, perhaps lead us to discover something hidden about their work. Book SynopsisTrade Review"In this groundbreaking study, Thomas C. Hubka examines the surprisingly ill-equipped houses of the broad middle class at the beginning of the twentieth century, charting the changes to the floor plan and the introduction of new technologies. Amply illustrated, Hubka’s study redefines the middle class and reinterprets its housing, offering a new understanding of how most Americans became modern."—Alison K. Hoagland, author of Mine Towns: Buildings for Workers in Michigan's Copper Country"This book is the most important study of common American houses to appear in the past half century. Thomas C. Hubka draws on a lifetime’s investigation of working-class houses in the decades before World War II to show us how and why the single-family houses of the contemporary ‘middle-majority’ sprung from these modest dwellings. Hubka has established an agenda that should engross architectural historians for years."—Dell Upton, author of American Architecture: A Thematic History "Architects, historians, housing advocates, and other people interested in the houses most Americans live in should find much to like in How the Working Class Became Modern."—Daily Dose of Architecture "This lavishly illustrated book takes the reader on a visual journey of all types of common houses belonging to America’s ‘middle majority.’"—Technology and Culture "Hubka’s book becomes the new bible of this architecture for material culture studies, architectural historians, and sociologists. Book SynopsisAge of Concrete is a history of the making of houses and homes in the subúrbios of Maputo (Lourenço Marques), Mozambique, from the late 1940s to the present. Often dismissed as undifferentiated, ahistorical slums, these neighborhoods are in fact an open-air archive that reveals some of people's highest aspirations. At first people built in reeds. Then they built in wood and zinc panels. And finally, even when it was illegal, they risked building in concrete block, making permanent homes in a place where their presence was often excruciatingly precarious.Unlike many histories of the built environment in African cities, Age of Concrete focuses on ordinary homebuilders and dwellers. David Morton thus models a different way of thinking about urban politics during the era of decolonization, when one of the central dramas was the construction of the urban stage itself. It shaped how people related not only to each other but also to the colonial state and later to the independent staTrade Review“Morton’s argument, delivered with passion and power, gives life to a nuanced, deeply personal understanding of how ordinary residents of disadvantaged urban communities not only make their neighborhoods—they reframe the everyday political order. The stories he tells resonate across the continent.”

  • British Housebuilders

John Wiley and Sons Ltd British Housebuilders

Book SynopsisBritish Housebuilders is the first comprehensive account of the corporate history of the twentieth-century speculative housebuilding industry - the firms that `supplied` those houses and the entrepreneurs who created those firms. The transition from the local housebuilders of the 1930s, through the regional diversification of the 1960s, to the national housebuilders of today is charted via a series of industry league tables. The rationale for the growth in national firms is analysed. The conventional explanation of economies of scale is rejected: instead, the stock market is found to play a key role both in facilitating acquisitions and in demanding growth from its constituent companies. The supply-side analysis also addresses the frequent corporate failures: succession issues, lack of focus and the 1974 and 1990 recessions have played their part in equal measure. British Housebuilders provides the first opportunity to reTrade Review'The author's encyclopaedic knowledge from researching and monitoring the industry shine through, but the book also draws on company accounts and a series of in-depth interviews with firm founders and senior directors or their relatives.' Book SynopsisDuring the 1920s, enterprising realtors, housing professionals, and builders developed the models that became the inspiration for the subdivision tract housing now commonplace in the U.S. Originally published in 2001. Suburban subdivisions of individual family homes are so familiar a part of the American landscape that it is hard to imagine a time when they were not common in the U. S. The shift to large-scale speculative subdivisions is usually attributed to the period after World War II. In Entrepreneurial Vernacular: Developers' Subdivisions in the 1920s, Carolyn S. Loeb shows that the precedents for this change in single-family home design were the result of concerted efforts by entrepreneurial realtors and other housing professionals during the 1920s. In her discussion of the historical and structural forces that propelled this change, Loeb focuses on three typical speculative subdivisions of the 1920s and on the realtors, architects, and building-craftsmen who designed and consTrade ReviewLoeb should be applauded for telling a complicated story. She successfully makes the realtors, architects, and building-craftsmen agents of physical growth. Loeb also uses careful case studies, but moves beyond them to try to tell a wider story.—Ann Durkin Keating, H-Net ReviewsLoeb's useful concept of entrepreneurial vernacular may encourage scholars to pay more attention to the builders and tradesmen whose activities were important in themselves and also constitute an important arena in which the histories of business, labor, and cities intersect.—Richard Harris, Journal of American HistoryLoeb's book helps us understand the roots of a significant trend in American housing after World War II . . . Book SynopsisIn Singlewide, Sonya Salamon and Katherine MacTavish explore the role of the trailer park as a source of affordable housing. America's trailer parks, most in rural places, shelter an estimated 12 million people, and the authors show how these parks serve as a private solution to a pressing public need. Singlewide considers the circumstances of families with school-age children in trailer parks serving whites in Illinois, Hispanics in New Mexico, and African Americans in North Carolina. By looking carefully at the daily lives of families who live side by side in rows of manufactured homes, Salamon and MacTavish draw conclusions about the importance of housing, community, and location in the families' dreams of opportunities and success as signified by eventually owning land and a conventional home. Working-poor rural families who engage with what Salamon and MacTavish call the mobile home industrial complex may become caught in an expensive trap starting with their purcTrade ReviewThe book realistically portrays trailer living in each unique area chosen by the authors. * Pasatiempo *The authors discuss four research questions involving the lasting effects on a family from living in a trailer park, financial payoffs, sense of belonging in a community, and the possibility that children and youth can improve their life chances. They also summarize the role of mobile home manufacturers, dealers, financers, park operators, and nearby communities. * Choice *Singlewide provides a rich and valuable picture of mobile-home park life, and the lessons learned spread well beyond these contexts. Scholars of poverty, housing, exploitation, families and communities, and child development will have much to gain from this important work. * Journal of Children and Poverty *This book addresses an important aspect of rural communities that have been understudied. Its strength is the in-depth stories drawn from the field studies that detail how families enter into trailer park living, and more importantly, how they become trapped there. It also effectively demonstrates how the stigmatized rural landscapes of trailer parks can impact youth opportunities and social networks.... This book represents a welcome exploration of mobile home park communities, and scholars who focus on a wide array of rural issues will find it interesting and useful. * Social & Cultural Geography *Singlewide provides a thoughtful sample of the millions of families living and raising children in rural or small-town mobile home parks. * Planning *Singlewide is an excellent addition to the rural sociology literature because it provides a rich account of the role of trailer parks in rural areas and of low-income households' housing strategies.... This book is enjoyable to read since it is well researched, well written, and well organized. Beyond rural scholars interested in housing and the wider topics mentioned above, this book should be suitable for many audiences. In particular, it should be approachable for undergraduate students and could be useful in a class on poverty or even in an introduction to sociology class to illustrate social mobility and structure versus agency. This book could also be useful in a graduate research methods seminar because it is a good example of approachable yet rigorous scholarship that draws on multiple data sources and types. Last, with a chapter focused on implications and recommendations, this book should be of interest to housing advocates, service providers, and policy makers. * Rural Sociology *Singlewide blazes a trail for future researchers to follow, opening our eyes to the limited housing options available in rural America. * American Journal of Sociology *This extensive study addresses a largely neglected subject and provides an important contribution to our understanding of class and place in America. Recommended for scholars in community, family, and policy studies. * Contemporary Sociology *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. The Mobile Home Industrial Complex 2. Making Ends Meet 3. • Eastcliff: History of a Home

University of Minnesota Press Eastcliff: History of a Home

Book SynopsisAn illustrated tour of this historic mansion on the Mississippi River, now the official home of the president of the University of Minnesota—and the most-visited public residence in the state Built as a family home in 1922 by lumber baron Edward Brooks, Eastcliff, a twenty-room estate in St. Paul on the banks of the Mississippi River, has been the official residence for presidents of the University of Minnesota since 1961. If houses could write memoirs, Eastcliff's would likely be a sensation, and Eastcliff: History of a Home reveals the story of this building and those it housed and hosted over a century of momentous change, told by an insider.A resident of Eastcliff for eight years as spouse of the university’s sixteenth president, Karen Kaler is a knowing and companionable guide through the historic home—from the foyer, hung with photographs of presidents’ families; to the library and bedrooms, living and dining rooms where family dramas played out and Minnesota history unfolded; to the carriage house and catering kitchen, whose denizens keep the household running. Here are the Georgian colonial-style facade, the tennis court, and an early, do-it-yourself saltwater pool. Here are the garden room and the dollhouse, Eastcliff in miniature. Here is a hallway that was once used as a shooting range and an attic with a skeleton in it. Amid all the splendor, business, and mischief there are visits from Helen Keller, Katharine Hepburn, Eddie Vedder, the Dalai Lama, and Vice Presidents Walter Mondale and Hubert Humphrey, whose appearance results in children surprising the Secret Service—a reminder that Eastcliff is the setting for family life as well as the site of academic and political events. In her tour of Eastcliff's hundred-year history, Karen Kaler tells all of these stories and more, graciously opening the doors to this illustrious home.Trade Review"Katharine Hepburn, John Dillinger, Helen Keller, Clark Gable—Karen Fults Kaler’s Eastcliff: History of a Home has them all, along with nine University of Minnesota presidents and the storied Brooks family that built a landmark atop the Mississippi River bluff in St. Paul. Their meticulously researched stories, zestfully told, make for delightful reading."—Lori Sturdevant, author and retired Star Tribune editorial writer

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn countless neighborhoods across America, the streets are lined with houses representingno established architectural style. Many of the 80 million homes in the United Statestoday have only loose-fitting, general names like ranch, duplex, bungalow, and flat. Most, however, cannot even be identified by these common names, much less by anarchitectural type such as Colonial, Italianate, or Queen Anne. The few regionallyrecognized vernacular terms— shotgun, Cape (Cod), three-decker, and the like—remainexceptions rather than the rule. In this innovative, copiously illustrated guide, Thomas C.Hubka considers why most ordinary, working-class houses lack an adequate identifyingnomenclature and proposes new ways to name and classify these anonymous structures, shedding a fresh light on their role in the development of American domestic culture andits housing landscape.Popular, developer-built, tract, speculative, everyday—whatever they are called, these common homes constitute the largest portion of American housing in all regionsand historic periods. Without classification, these dwellings tend to be left out of historiesof American building, neglected in preservation surveys and plans, and ignored when itcomes to considering their impact on American culture. Current methods of interpretingcommon houses need not be replaced, Hubka shows, but only modified to include abroader, more complete spectrum of common dwellings. As Hubka explains, by applyingan order of census and a floor-plan analysis, scholars can adequately characterizethe actual homes in which most Americans live, particularly in recent times after thewidespread growth of suburban homes.Based on years of field observations, measured drawings, and surveys of regionalhouse types, this handbook provides a working vocabulary for the study and appreciationof America¹s common houses and will prove useful to preservationists, academics, andarchitects, as well as owners and residents of America¹s most ubiquitous residences.

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom the late 1930s to the early 1970s, two brothers, Burton G. Tremaine and Warren D. Tremaine, and their respective wives, Emily Hall Tremaine and Katharine Williams Tremaine, commissioned approximately thirty architecture and design projects. Richard Neutra and Oscar Niemeyer designed the best-known Tremaine houses; Philip Johnson and Frank Lloyd Wright also created designs and buildings for the family that achieved iconic status in the modern movement. Focusing on the Tremaines’ houses and other projects, such as a visitor center at a meteor crater in Arizona, this volume explores the Tremaines’ architectural patronage in terms of the family’s motivations and values, exposing patterns in what may appear as an eclectic collection of modern architecture. Architectural historian Volker M. Welter argues that the Tremaines’ patronage was not driven by any single factor; rather, it stemmed from a network of motives comprising the clients’ practical requirements, their private and public lives, and their ideas about architecture and art.

University of Tennessee Press Experiencing American Houses: Understanding How

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA well-illustrated, holistic overview of how American domestic spaces have changed over four hundred years, Experiencing American Houses encourages readers to think creatively about houses in terms of their function as opposed to their appearance. This captivating volume helps the reader step into the lived experience of the evolving American house: understanding, for example, why a nineteenth-century dining room might include a bed or why the kitchen as we know it did not evolve until the turn of the twentieth century. By carrying her study from the colonial period to the present, Elizabeth Collins Cromley makes the domestic spaces of the past feel like vital precursors to today's experience.Beginning with cooking spaces, Cromley examines how multi-use areas consolidated into dedicated rooms for cooking, from fires on an earthen floor to sleek modern spaces with twenty first-century appliances. Next, the author looks at ways social class, income, and local custom framed which kinds of spaces became suitable for socializing and entertaining, and what they should be called: sitting room, drawing room, hall, living room, family room, or parlor. Distinct from cooking spaces, Cromley discusses eating spaces, which morphed from multi-use areas to separate dining rooms and back again. The author covers spaces for sleeping, health, and privacy, as well as circulation—the ways that we move through a house—analyzing the functions of such little-studied features as hallways, back doors, and staircases. Finally, Cromley takes on the evolution of storage, which began mainly because of the need to store and preserve food. Clothing closets grew from oddly shaped afterthoughts to generous walk-ins, while increases in material wealth led to the need for storage outbuildings. This accessible volume, informed by up-to-date scholarship in vernacular architecture and disciplines far beyond it, provides students and readers necessary context to understand the development of the historic and contemporary houses they encounter.

Book SynopsisWhile Dale's earlier books have focused on smaller cabins (1,600 sq. ft. and below), this one will be less about size and more about the living experience. The Family Cabin will feature new and old family compounds from across North America, much as The Cabin and Back to the Cabinhave done. New structures explore the prospect of family bonding, where old ones tell the tales of generations of family use. Since the beginning of the 20th century, cabin retreats have had a unique place in the lives and lore of many American families. In the 21st century, cabin creation continues with new forms and materials that give shelter at nature's doorstep. In this new collection of 37 cabins, Mulfinger rekindles his love for this treasured American icon with fresh insight and seasoned strategies for the logic, utility and beauty of cabin design.

Book SynopsisA change is taking place all across the country and especially on the West Coast, a shift led by the younger generations. People who in years past might have headed for the suburbs are instead moving to the city or choosing not to leave. Many will live in apartments or condos. But in cities that have neighborhoods of detached dwellings (and most cities still do), people are buying, building, and fixing up little houses. . Many people who already live in a little city house are staying put, remodeling perhaps, but not trading up or moving out. . Others are building a little house in their backyard to serve as quarters for guests or extended family, or as a rental home for single people, couples, or small households, or even as an Airbnb for overnight visitors. . A few intrepid souls are finding clever ways to fit a little house into novel spots in the city - building one on the rooftop of a warehouse, or repurposing an industrial structure, or transforming a two-car garage into a home. It is a blueprint that takes the speculation out of spec building and provides the builder with an elusive commodity in the construction industry: peace of mind. Plus, keeping sustainability at the forefront of building decisions is good for the environment and the homeowner's bottom line. Building an Affordable House provides an updated sensibility to the building decisions every homeowner must make in today's challenging construction environment, whether they are building a brand-new house or renovating one they love. This update includes all new code information, techniques that honour sustainable building practices, and cost-saving methods that are safe and effective. This book reveals the secrets of building better for less and developing your own cost-cutting approach that balances marketability, quality, and price.
