Book SynopsisArt photographs of strikingly beautiful and austere shrines of saints and pilgrimage sites erected by the Uyghurs (a mystic, pacifistic branch of Islam) in the deserts of Western China that are threatened by that country's rapid development will appeal to all interested in art, Central Asia, and Chinese or Islamic culture. Lisa Ross's ethereal photographs of Islamic holy sites were created over the course of a decade on journeys to China's Xinjiang region in Central Asia, historically a cultural crossroads but an area to which artists and researchers have generally been denied access since its annexation in 1949. These monumental images show shrines created during pilgrimages, many of which have been maintained continuously over several centuries; visitation to the tombs of saints is a central aspect of daily life in Uyghur Islam, and its pilgrims ask for intercession for physical, mental, and spiritual ailments. The shrines, adorned with small devotional offerings that mark a prayer or visit, are poignant representations of collective memory and a pacifistic faith, and endure despite vulnerability to natural forces of sand, heat, and powerful winds. Their simplicity and austerity as captured by Ross invoke ideas of spirituality, eternity, and transcendence. Three essays—by a historian of Central Asian Islam, a Uyghur folklorist, and the curator of an accompanying exhibition at the Rubin Museum of Art—situate the photographic content in context. This volume emerges at a critical time, as modernization and new policies for development of China's far west bring about rapid, extreme, and irrevocable change; the region is its largest source of untapped natural gas, oil, and minerals. Many of the sites in Ross's work are threatened by political and economic pressures—her images are valuable, therefore, not only for their intrinsic beauty, but as an important record of a rich and vibrant culture.Trade Review“Ms. Ross returned repeatedly to the Xinjiang region of far western China, accompanied by an Uyghur folklorist, Rahile Dawut, and a French historian of Central Asia, Alexandre Papas. Both have contributed essays to Ms. Ross’s recently published book of photographs of the shrines. And a selection of pictures from the book makes up the small exhibition, organized by Beth Citron, at the Rubin Museum of Art. With its expanses of pale earth and wide sky framing wind-whipped Uyghur forms, the show is a heart lifter, confirming the idea that belief is, and always has been, a wellspring of visual invention, and that evanescence has an aesthetic all its own.” —The New York Times "Lisa Ross’s luminous photographs are not our usual images of Xinjiang. One of China’s most turbulent areas, the huge autonomous region in the country’s northwest was brought under permanent Chinese control only in the mid-twentieth century. Officially, it is populated mostly by non-ethnic Chinese—Turkic peoples like Uighurs (also spelled Uyghurs), Kazakhs, and Kyrgyz, as well as Mongolians and even Russians—and its population has long had difficult relations with Beijing. In 2008, 2009, and 2012, Xinjiang was the site of bloody protests. Instead of representing these political conflicts, however, Ross’s photographs are unassuming and quiet; people are never present and the objects she captures—stone on sand, cloth on stone, the skeleton of a dried animal—have an incandescent glow, as if lit by another sun. In fact, these images reveal a little-known religious tradition in Xinjiang—its desert shrines to Sufi saints. Taken in the Xinjiang’s Taklamakan Desert, they are collected in Ross’s addictive new book Living Shrines of Uyghur China." —New York Review of Books "Lisa Ross is a hunter and gatherer of rare grace. With the patience and resolve of a true pilgrim, she travels to impossible places and captures ephemeral notions (such as prayer, history, isolation, migration, hope, grief, longing, etc.). These notions, she transforms with a quiet alchemy into photographs that inhabit the viewer’s mind and soul forever. Quite simply, my admiration for this work has no bounds." —Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love "An awareness of transience lies at the heart of all devotion, and it finds an apt emblem in these grave markers, bent and tattered by the wind . . . In time, and not much time, [modernization] could transform Ms. Ross’s exquisite anthropological images of living monuments into documents of relics." —Holland Cotter, The New York Times "I have an obsession with saints and the desert, things that are bigger than we are. When I first saw Lisa's work I was moved by the colors and beauty of the imagery, and learning where they were made and what concerned her made me even more impressed by their silence and serenity. Lisa found a place and really found a way to find herself in that place." —Nan Goldin

  • The Dean and Canons' Houses of St George's

Oxbow Books The Dean and Canons' Houses of St George's

Book SynopsisThe College of St George at Windsor Castle was founded by Edward III in 1348 to support the newly created Order of the Garter, and to this day fulfils the same primary purpose. The domestic buildings provided for the Warden, Canons and Priest-Vicars – now the Deanery and Canons Cloister – are an astonishing survival: despite enlargement and alteration over the centuries, a significant amount of the mid-fourteenth-century fabric survives, though often hidden from view. A recent programme of refurbishment and conservation revealed much hitherto unknown evidence for the way the buildings were constructed, their fittings and decoration and their subsequent evolution. The author maintained a continuous ‘watching brief’ throughout the refurbishment works, the results of which are published here for the first time. The archaeological evidence is supplemented by the excellent survival of documentation, both for the initial construction of the buildings and their subsequent development: we know the precise date of each stage of construction, the cost and even the names of the workmen involved. The post-medieval history of the buildings is also highly significant, and for this period we have the benefit of knowing more about the deans and canons who influenced the ways their dwellings developed, and of a continued wealth of documentary evidence.Table of ContentsIntroduction Acknowledgements The numbering of the houses of Canons’ Cloister List of abbreviations 1. • Great Cloister: A Lost Canterbury Tale: A History

Archaeopress Great Cloister: A Lost Canterbury Tale: A History

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGreat Cloister: A Lost Canterbury Tale presents a new study of the heraldry, genealogy and history of the Canterbury Cathedral cloister. It is the first comprehensive and complete study of this monument ever undertaken, and it provides a detailed chronology as well as many new insights into the families who were donors. The monument is revealed to have been the personal project of Archbishop Thomas Arundel (d.1414), an individual closely connected with the overthrow of King Richard II. The work as a whole provides considerable insights into the revolution of 1399 and the troubled reign of Henry IV as seen through the lens of individual families. The cloister, as originally conceived, contained 856 heraldic shields, badges and devices of which 576 were unique. Some 365 families, principalities, religious foundations and other individuals both real and imagined were represented, some with more than one shield or device. More precisely, there were 252 families, 51 peerage families, 3 English royal families (Lancaster, York and Beaufort), 20 principalities, 12 religious foundations, 9 bishops, 7 saints, 3 heroes, 4 cities or towns, 2 priests, 1 monk and 1 for God himself (in the form of the Holy Trinity). The origins and evolution of each shield represented are considered in detail.Trade Review'... this is a splendid volume allowing the history and genealogy of the Canterbury cloister and its hundreds of associated individuals and families to stand in new and radiant light. It will remain as an indispensable vade mecum for long into the future.' -- David Wright * The Antiquaries Journal *Table of ContentsForeword by His Grace the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal Explanation of shield numbers Introduction History of the Cloister’s construction Dating the cloister Thomas Arundel as Archbishop of Canterbury The Cloister as a roll of arms The Bay of Reconciliation (Bay 30) The Royal Bay (Bay 32) The Arundel Family Bay (Bay 33) Lollards in the cloister The English Cardinals Other bishops and monks Religious foundations The Archbishop’s friends Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen The last bay The lost paper record of the Cloister Roll Problems of the sources Willement’s Three Sources Incorrect repainting Heraldry in the era of the Cloister Heraldic authority Ricardian innovations Female arms Cadency marks King Henry IV The lost shields Bay 1 Bay 10 Bay 11 Bay 12 Bay 15 Bay 17 Bay 20 Bay 25 Bay 26 Bay 29 Bibliography Alphabetical list of shields Numerical list of shields The shields

  • St Albans Abbey The Excavation of the Chapter

Archaeopress St Albans Abbey The Excavation of the Chapter

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSt Albans Abbey is one of the greatest of medieval England. The origins of the medieval abbey lie much further in the past, in the time of Roman Verulamium, and the early history of the abbey is that of the martyrdom of Alban, whose burial is associated with the area of the abbey itself. The creation of memorial churches over the graves of saints outside the walls of Roman cities is commonplace in the world of late antiquity. One has only to think of St Peter's or St Paul's without the Walls in Rome, but in Britain no single case is yet known, other than St Albans. This book is about the excavation in 1978 of the site of the medieval chapter house of St Albans Abbey, a building second in importance only to the abbey church itself. The excavation took place in response to the impending construction of a new chapter house, on the exact site of its medieval predecessor, demolished following the suppression of the abbey in the sixteenth century.Enigmatic finds

Book SynopsisThese two volumes brings together Professor Sauerländer's papers on Romanesque art, and complement his two previously published volumes in this series on Gothic art. The studies are again grouped around a number of common themes: structures, problems of classification, the geography of Romanesque art, and its development in Italy and the Empire. Early studies have been updated with references to the more recent literature, and there is a comprehensive index.Table of ContentsIn Praise of Italy - Peculiarities and Characteristics of Italian Romanesque Sculpture. • Pindar Press Studies in English Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisTrained as both an archaeologist and an art historian, Richard Gem established his specialist interest in pre-Romanesque and Romanesque architecture with his doctoral research at Cambridge University. Since then he has researched, published and lectured widely in this subject, while holding posts in different fields of cultural resource management. Dr Gem's earlier work aimed to establish an understanding of English architecture in the 11th century that would break away from the view that cultural development in this period could be simply explained in terms of whether buildings were constructed before or after the Norman Conquest. He has taken a wide view of how cultural processes in England need to be seen in the context of broader European trends, in order to understand both English architecture's indebtedness to the Continent, and also what gives it its specific national character. His earlier papers applied this approach to the development of the Romanesque style of architecture in England through the course of the 11th century while more recently he has applied a similar approach to earlier centuries, including the Carolingian period. Taking a broad view of cultural trends as his starting point, he has always anchored his work on a detailed archaeological, historical and stylistic analysis of individual buildings before drawing conclusions. This publication includes Dr Gem's main work over a period of quarter of a century. Taken together, these studies present an overview of the development of English Church architecture from the 7th century to the 12th.Table of ContentsEngland and the Resistance to Romanesque Architecture The Romanesque Rebuilding of Westminster Abbey The Significance of the 11th-Century Rebuilding of Christ Church and St Augustine's, Canterbury, in the Development of Romanesque Architecture Canterbury and the Cushion Capital: a Commentary on Passages from Goscelin's de miraculis sancti Augustini The Romanesque Architecture of Old St Paul's Cathedral and its Late 11th-Century Context Chichester Cathedral: When was the Romanesque Church Begun The Romanesque Cathedral of Winchester: Patron and Design in the 11th Century The First Romanesque Cathedral of Old Salisbury Bishop Wulfstan II and the Romanesque Cathedral Church of Worcester The Bishop's Chapel at Hereford: the Roles of Patron and Craftsman Lincoln Minster: Ecclesia Pulchra, Ecclesia Fortis Romanesque Architecture in Chester c. 1075 to 1117 The English Parish Church in the 11th and 12th Centuries: a 'Great Rebuilding';The Early Romanesque Tower of Sompting Church, Sussex An Early Church of the Knights Templars at Shipley, Sussex The Church of St Michael and St Mary, Melbourne, Derbyshire Additional Notes Index

  • Der Kirchenraum als Topos der Dogmatik

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Der Kirchenraum als Topos der Dogmatik

    1 in stock
