  • The Story of a Section: Designing the Shougang

Oro Editions The Story of a Section: Designing the Shougang

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is an experiment on constructing a text starting — exclusively and strictly — from the materials of an architectural project. As in an archive, it contains all the documents produced by the design team, which become the only sources of a text that allows the reader to generalise the project’s contents and reflect on its process. An extensive masterplan is transforming the abandoned industrial area of Shougang, on the outskirts of Beijing, into one of the venues for the 2022 Winter Olympics Games. Within this process, the China Room, as a research centre of the Politecnico di Torino dedicated to urbanisation and architecture in China, was involved by Tsinghua University in the transformation of the former oxygen factory into a visitor centre, working on industrial memory as a lever for a renovation of the existing aimed at the overall sustainability of the masterplan. The book overviews and analyses the most important steps that transformed initial design intentions into a defined proposal, passing through different solutions, changes, debates, and negotiations among the different stakeholders called into action along the whole process. Telling the story of this architectural project means thinking about the ways of designing across different contexts in the global market. More particularly, the story is about the skills and experiences that Academia puts in place by addressing real transformation projects through research, with respect to professional practice modalities. In addition, the book is intended to make design practicing transparent to the reader, capable to move around the genesis of the project following the many trajectories occurred along the whole process, similarly to an open archive: retrospectively the final image of the building will incorporate architectural elements brought by socio-technical decisions, enlarging the spectrum of design agency from single authorship to a larger collective of involved stakeholders. Among the project documents, a recurring drawing guided the project exchange between the Politecnico and Tsinghua teams during the two years of joint design work. The cross-section of the factory was the point of comparison about the relationship with the structural skeleton of the original factory and the vertical organisation of the project: from the public playground on the ground floor to the intensive exploitation of the intermediate levels, to the roof that seeks new relationships with the competition area and the natural landscape.

Book SynopsisGathering twenty essays written over twenty years, Figments of the Architectural Imagination explores the frontiers of speculative architectural design, theory, and pedagogy to offer clear-eyed and incisive treatments of some of the most important projects, practices, and polemics at work making contemporary architecture contemporary. These sharp and insightful texts, whether addressing the impact of digital technology, the design of an effective hotel, the emergence of the Los Angeles vanguard, or the proper execution of a thesis project, combine frontline reportage, archival scholarship, trenchant prose, and impressive critical acumen to cut through the cacophony of recent architectural discourse with uncommon clarity, intelligence, rigor, and wit. Taken together, these essays provide essential orientation for practitioners, academics, students, and aficionados hoping to understand how contemporary architecture came to be where it is and to speculate on where it might go next.

Book SynopsisThis book celebrates over 20 years of Bonstra Haresign Architects’ community-focused practice. It documents the growth and success attributable to the firm’s philosophy and methodological approach. Many beautiful images and descriptive text show that Bill’s and David’s design aspirations and cooperative work styles, shared by their talented, associate partners John Edwards and Jack Devilbiss and the studio teams, have produced not only award-winning architecture, but also architecture benefitting each project’s surroundings. Bonstra Haresign Architects serves a variety of populations and communities: urban and suburban, commercial and residential, civic and cultural. Projects range from affordable and market-rate housing to historic restoration, renovation and adaptive reuse. Typologically diverse projects are the essence of Bonstra Haresign Architects’ architectural work and community-building efforts. And desirable community enhancement resulting from their projects is visible in Washington, DC, urban neighbourhoods as well as in eastern region. Bonstra Haresign Architects’ does not exist to implement the aesthetic tastes and wishes of a soloist 'starchitect' or prima donna designer with a signature style, yet design artistry is an essential goal of the firm. This complements Bill’s and David’s fundamental commitment to create contextually modernist architecture as an agent of positive change beyond each project’s site boundaries.Table of Contents4 Foreword Roger K. Book SynopsisIn 2015, the Vendôme column regained its initial splendour thanks to a long restoration campaign supported by the Vendôme committee and particularly the Ritz. During the dismantling of the scaffolding, David Bordes took exceptional shots of all the column plates. Published here for the first time, these 450 photographs form a fascinating and totally new corpus: the details of the battle scenes, the military costumes, the landscapes which constitute the setting of the battle of Austerlitz allow one to discover the column as it had never been revealed. Based on the shots of David Bordes, but also on paintings, old photographs, period documents, this widely illustrated art book in exceptional format and workmanship brings the history of the column to life, its sources, its destruction, its restoration, and also describes the moving history of the daily life of the Grande Armée during the Austerlitz campaign.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisJean Prouvé began to design portable and demountable barracks for the French army during the Second World War. After the war, the French government commissioned Prouvé to design inexpensive, effective housing for the newly homeless, prompting him to perfect his patented axial portal frame to build easily constructed demountable houses. Few of these groundbreaking structures were built, making them exceedingly rare today—prompting Galerie Patrick Seguin’s tireless efforts over the past 27 years to preserve and promote these important designs. The gallery owns the largest collection of Prouvé’s demountables, 22 in total. This volume focuses on the Villejuif Temporary School designed in 1957. It is luxuriously illustrated with archival and contemporary photographs. Though lacking any formal education in architecture, Jean Prouvé (1901–84) became one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, boldly experimenting with new building designs, materials and methods. “His postwar work has left its mark everywhere,” wrote Le Courbusier, “decisively.”

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisRouge Lointain is first and foremost a book of photographs that is in line with the resolutely contemporary trend of preserving traces of places and activities that are in danger of disappearing. Through the images of its superb machinery that has now disappeared and its deserted architecture, it is the memory of an Italian-style theatre that lives on today. Through them it is also the work of those who worked there in the shadows and without whom the show could not have existed as we imagine. Fascinated by the beauty of its frames, the dilapidated materials, the magic of these mechanisms made of ropes, pulleys, capstans and narrow footbridges on three antique masts, André Soupart invites us to wander on the grill, under the stage and backstage and to discover a universe unknown to the spectators. Book SynopsisText in English & Portuguese. In the second half of 2007, the baton of the EU Council Presidency was passed to Portugal. The country decided to hold the majority of the planned meetings, conferences and summits at a central location in Lisbon. The chosen venue was the Sala Tejo des Pavilhão Atlântico, which was converted to host the meetings on the future of Europe, culminating in the Treaty of Lisbon. The architects commissioned for this project, Baixa, Atelier de Arquitectura, successfully gave the venue -- as well as the event -- an impressive identity, marked by Portuguese culture and contemporary architecture. This book pays tribute to this ephemeral piece of architecture with a comprehensive collection of sketches, drawings and photos. In the accompanying and introductory texts, the project is viewed through the eyes of two well-known architecture critics as well as the Head of Mission of the Portuguese Presidency.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisText in English & Portuguese. The Luz Integrated Health Complex, comprising the Hospital da Luz and the Casas da Cidade (Senior Residences), is situated in the Luz neighbourhood, to the north of Lisbon. Designed by the Lisbon-based architectural firm RISCO, it is seen as a benchmark for state-of-the-art developments in hospital architecture. In her text Catherine Slessor describes it as follows: This project is striking on many levels, but most notably in the way that it rationalises, dignifies and humanises a large and complex healthcare programme. Perhaps the best and most paradoxical epithet that any critic can offer is that the Hospital da Luz doesn''t particularly look or feel like a hospital. Rather, the architecture reconceptualises the notion what that might be, and then skilfully socialises this notion so that it becomes a built and experiential reality. And in doing so, another subtle shift is applied to the evolving continuum of the hospital as one of the modern era''s most fundamental yet elusive building types. There are further contributions by Luís Santiago Baptista and Axel Hinrich Murken who provides a comprehensive overview of the history of hospital architecture. In addition to the large selection of plans and images there are various texts by architects and engineers who were involved in the construction.

Quart Publishers Hotel Palace Lucerne: Heritage Renovation

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1906, the Hotel Palace was built along Lucerne’s prominent Quai Promenade according to plans by Heinrich Meili-Wapf – one of the most important Lucerne architects of the time. The mighty building, which appears as if it were developed out of a single block, is regarded as one of the most important Swiss hotel developments of its time, both due to its pioneering construction and building technology, and due to its architectural design. After several interior conversions that were typical for the times of their implementation, the building was carefully and comprehensively renewed by the Lucerne-based architect Iwan Bühler between 2018 and 2022, taking aspects of monument preservation into account. This demanded ideally preserving the existing building fabric, while revealing and reproducing the building’s often differentiated and subtle qualities, as well as the wealth of the original building. The work also included carefully renewing individual elements inside and outside the building to accommodate current utilisation. This book documents the original building from 1906 with historical plans and photographs, while shedding light on the hotel’s activities and daily life in recent decades. The volume also presents extensive planning and photographic material to demonstrate the strategy and measures applied to the architecturally and historically important building. The exciting project presentation includes illuminating essays by Peter Omachen on the foundation and importance of the original hotel, and by Cony Grünenfelder, Cantonal Monument Preservation Officer, who followed the refurbishment with an expert and insightful eye. Out of stock

Book SynopsisOn 29 September 1979, 250,000 filled the seats of Chile's National Stadium in Santiago. The event that was meant to transform the attendants from mere dwellers into proprietors. Prior to it, a booklet circulated that featured a plan of the stadium showing the space of its stands subdivided into boroughs and shanty towns. The peopled summoned were mostly beneficiaries from a national self-help housing programme responding to a severe housing crisis by offering people a plot of land within the city. Stadium: A Building that Renders the Image of a City tells a double story of that 1979 event in Santiago de Chile: that of a building, with its dissimilar and even contradictory past uses, and that of a city, with its atomised housing underpinning an unequal development. Both parts are overlaid here, where the stadium's floorplan, rather than delineating the stands, visualises another city marginalised from its centre and arresting different scales in a spatial and temporal panorama. Arranged in four chapters, the book features short essays as well as rich visual material. Text in English and Spanish.

  • Park Books Weak Monument: Architectures Beyond the Plinth

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMonuments represent power: explicitly and simply, but not universally. In Estonia, the classical notion of a monument is a strange one. Its presence is marginal, its tradition non-existent and its form tormented by an apparent cultural displacement. The statue on a square never claimed the central position so common in Western Europe. This semantic void directs attention to other, less exceptional pieces of architecture. Sometimes a stairway marks a politically charged location, or a pavement becomes symbolic. Instead of explicit meanings inscribed in marble and bronze, an implicit charge is revealed that might be weaker yet more relevant, for what is only implicit cannot be openly questioned. Weak Monument explores the blurred line between a monument's explicitly political form and the architecture of everyday. It juxtaposes classical monuments with seemingly insignificant architectural objects and public space in a collection of images and drawings, archival as well as newly commissioned ones, alongside essays and brief texts. Contributors include such eminent guests as Tom Avermaete, Professor of Architecture at the Delft University of Technology; Margrethe Troensegaard from Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford; Eik Hermann, Estonian theorist and philosopher; and Toomas Paaver, Estonian architect and political activist. Text in English and Estonian.

Book SynopsisIn Cachan, a suburb south of Paris, Ateliers O-S Architectes was commissioned with transforming a local theatre building, originally built in the early twentieth century, into a thriving cultural centre. The commission went well beyond merely rebuilding and modernising an existing structure. Rather, the firm was tasked with creating an entirely new neighbourhood. Everything but the auditorium and stage of the old building was demolished and replaced with a more spacious, new complex including an additional hall, a new foyer and exhibition space, a restaurant, and new rooms for building and stage equipment. The neighbouring tennis court became a public park. Lever de Rideau presents the creation of Cachan's new Jacques Carat Theater. Designed to mimic a theatre programme, the book brings together short essays and interviews; portraits of key protagonists; a graphic short story; and ample illustrations, including plans and photographs by celebrated French photographer Cyrille Weiner, which show the building embedded in Cachan's urban fabric. Offering captivating behind-the-scenes insights, this unconventional book will be welcomed by readers interested in modern architecture and urban planning. Text in English and French.

Every two months, for four years, researchers reconfigured a 350-square meter workspace for forty scientists. The design-based collaborative experiment's focus was on the interrelation of space and knowledge production: What spatial qualities are required by interdisciplinary teams for their research work? With some 300 striking and straightforward graphics, Experimental Zone presents the findings of the experiment. It highlights the spatial conditions under which individual and collaborative research unfold, overlap, or merge and reveals the characteristics of an architecture that fosters interdisciplinary. The experiment's innovative interdisciplinary approach is also reflected in the book's design, with each of the five chapters and the comprehensive visual material reflecting publishing traditions in design, architecture, and the humanities.

Founded in 1811, when Sir Francis Bourgeois RA bequeathed his collection of old masters “for the inspection of the public”, it opened its famous building designed by John Soane in 1817. To mark the museum’s bicentenary in 2017, Dulwich Picture Gallery commissioned a first temporary summer pavilion on its grounds. For the second edition of the Dulwich Pavilion in 2019, the commission was awarded to London-based architects Dingle Price and Alex Gore in collaboration with British artist Yinka Ilori. This elegant, large-size book documents this piece of built poetry in a series of striking, atmospheric photographs by Sophie Roycroft. The concise essays by Job Floris and Sumayya Vally situate the project within a social, political, and cultural context, complemented by technical details and selected plans and drawings on and inside the book’s cover.

Book SynopsisDaniela Keiser ranks among the most renowned contemporary artists in Switzerland. In 2017 she was awarded the Prix Meret Oppenheim as well as a studio grant from Landis & Gyr Stiftung that enabled her to embark on an extended stay in London’s East End. There she discovered the Idea Store, the public library on Whitechapel Road built by British architect David Adjaye in 2001–05. Upon its opening to the public, this institution quickly became a meeting place for a broad spectrum of society including for socially disadvantaged people. The goal of the Idea Stores - eight of them have so far been opened in various London boroughs - is to enhance formerly neglected neighbourhoods and offer a low-threshold source of education and information. From that initial Idea Store on Whitechapel Road, Daniela Keiser began to take pictures of the goings-on in the street outside. Her Library - Idea Store series reveals a calm, repetitive but insistent image of the city and offers insight into the small everyday variations of the surrounding world. Her photographic reflection is accompanied by a conversation between David Adjaye and art and architecture historian Philip Ursprung. They talk about Keiser’s perception of the site and - without actually showing the building - the impact of urban design and the architect’s intentions.

Book SynopsisLocated in the futuristic business district La Défense of Paris, Trinity is a 32-storey office tower, built ex nihilo on a concrete slab poured above a seven-lane roadway as a major feat of civil engineering. Designed by Paris-based Cro&Co Architecture, it provides 3,500 square metres of landscaped public space and links the previously disconnected neighbourhoods within La Défense. Diverging from traditional office building design, Trinity is a unique high-rise conceived to facilitate open interaction with its environment, and to enable new forms of working through its shared spaces, terraces and balconies, and an accessible rooftop. It marks a break with the inward-looking buildings that have predominated in La Défense so far and that are indifferent to their surroundings. Trinity offers truly habitable heights with its generous public and semi-public spaces, distinguishing it from other high-rises designed to maximise real-estate returns. This book, published in collaboration with the Paris-based agency Metropolis, shows how the Trinity project’s different views were made, the iterations that led to a system where vision connects, assembles and brings together. It reveals the elements involved in making these various views, destined to disappear as construction advanced. And it explores the tension between these hidden elements and the views that they form.

Book SynopsisThe new education centre of Advan FC on the island of Madagascar is a prime example of a bottom-up development-aid project based on pragmatism and with the goal of self-empowerment. When Viktor Bänziger, who runs a bar in the heart of Zurich, visited Madagascar as a tourist in 2015, he was struck by the severe poverty and difficult living conditions of the local population and decided to act. In close collaboration with Zurich-based architect Nele Dechmann and the president of Advan FC, Titus Solohery Andriamananjara, the project for a new football ground and surrounding buildings was developed. The complex, which is soundly based on local building knowledge and construction methods, gives local children the opportunity to develop their football skills and, more importantly, to receive minimal reading and writing lessons after football training and to have meals together. The remote location in Madagascar’s mountains and the tight budget suggested a simple typology that conveys a common architectural language despite the different uses of individual buildings. A key part of the entire concept is a simple manual for the actual construction that leaves many decisions and responsibilities to the local community. This book tells the story of an extraordinary participative undertaking, which very likely will never be completed entirely, of people originating from deeply differing cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. It introduces a model of potentially universal usage anywhere in the world. And it documents the architecture of Advan FC’s education center and its construction process in rich detail through photographs and plans.

Book SynopsisA decade after the Swiss National Bank had opened its neo-baroque building in Berne, the bank’s Zurich-based Governing Board moved into its own grand office building in 1922. This major work of the local firm of Otto and Werner Pfister is a prime example of neo-classicism in Switzerland and provided Zurich with an architectural landmark at the top end of its famous Bahnhofstrasse. Marking its centenary, this book celebrates the Zurich home of the Swiss Franc. It describes in detail and lavishly illustrated the architecture and building history from planning stage until today. This is supplemented by essays on bank architecture since the Middle Ages, the urban formation of Zurich and the city's development into a financial centre in the late 19th century. In his contribution, the renowned Canadian-British architect Adam Caruso compares it from today’s perspective with other central bank buildings and places it in context of the Pfister brothers’ other public commissions, many of which are occupying prominent locations in Zurich's cityscape. Richly illustrated with historical and new photographs, original plans and other historical documents, the volume pays tribute to a piece of public architecture that combines monumentality with pragmatism and republican modesty.

Book SynopsisRuhrchemie AG, a chemical company based in Oberhausen (Germany) has, since its founding in 1928, consistently maintained a photographic archive of the company's history. In addition to numerous professional and amateur photographers, whose pictures were shown in company magazines and brochures, Ruhrchemie commissioned photographs from luminaries of the profession such as Albert Renger-Patzsch and Robert H usser. This book of photographs presents a selection from the wide range of images in the collection, including factory architecture, industrial landscapes, and employees. Renger-Patzsch's cool approach, which aimed for objectivity, was ideally suited to the representation of both industrial architecture and engineering structures. In contrast to Renger-Patzsch's images, which are mostly devoid of human beings, H usser photographed the workers in the workplace. Apart from his trademark black and white photos, more than one hundred color slides have been preserved in the company's archive. Many of these are published here for the first time.
