    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis volume deals with the architectural history of the theatre in Roman Palestine and Provincia Arabia. The first part provides the historical-cultural background and seeks to explain the significance of theatres in a region which had no classical roots. Part two contains a comprehensive architectural analysis, richly illustrated, of each of the thirty theatres so far uncovered in the area.Trade Review'Segal's architectural analysis is an important contribution to the archaeology of Roman Palestine.' L.L. Grabbe, Society for Old Testament Study, 1995. 'This book provides a very useful survey of the thirty Roman theatres that have thus far been found in Roman Palestine and the Province of Arabia. The descriptions are careful and thorough, the tables of comparative data useful, and the photographic plates an excellent resource. ...the book is one to which archaeologists and cultural historians will want ready access.' Thomas R.W. Longstaff, Religious Studies Review, 1995. 'His presentation of the material is generally excellent and his generous combination of photographs and line drawings brings clarity to his written account. The wealth of new material that is presented in this book amply demonstrates the rewards to be had studying from studying sites off the beaten track.' David M. Jacobson, Bulletin of the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society, 1994. '...well documented...' Architectural Science Review, 1997.

  • Brill Tombs in Early Modern Rome (1400–1600): Monuments of Mourning, Memory and Meditation

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn Tombs in Early Modern Rome (1400–1600), Jan L. de Jong reveals how funerary monuments, far from simply marking a grave, offered an image of the deceased that was carefully crafted to generate a laudable memory and prompt meditative reflections on life, death, and the hereafter. This leads to such questions as: which image of themselves did cardinals create when they commissioned their own tomb monuments? Why were most popes buried in grandiose tomb monuments that they claimed they did not want? Which memory of their mothers did children create, and what do tombs for children tell about mothers? Were certain couples buried together so as to demonstrate their eternal love, expecting an afterlife in each other’s company?Table of ContentsContents Acknowledgements List of Illustrations Introduction 1 Nos tegimus cineres, spiritus astra tenet: Monuments, Mortal Remains and the Soul  1 Problems Caused by Tombs in Church Buildings  2 Epitaphs: Composing and Carving  3 Functions of Tomb Monuments  4 Beliefs and Convictions  5 Studying Tomb Monuments 2 (Vivens) sibi posuit: Cardinals Planning Their Own Tomb Monument  1 Questions  2 Opulence and Modesty  3 The Role of Inscriptions  4 Pride and Self-Promotion  5 Monuments of Vain Glory?  6 Cardinal Giovanni Ricci  7 Conclusions 3 Qui semper vanos tumuli contempsit honores: Directing the Memory of the Pope  1 Questions  2 The Popes’ Wishes  3 Respectfully Securing the Popes’ Memory  4 Modesty Ignored  5 Conclusions 4 Optima, prudentissima, infelicissima: Mothers and Monuments  1 Questions  2 Tomb Monuments Erected for Mothers  3 Tomb Monuments Erected by Mothers for Their Children  4 Conclusions 5 Concordes et amantissime: Tomb Monuments for Spouses  1 Questions  2 Coniuges viventes fecerunt: Erected by Both Spouses Still Alive  3 Coniugi et sibi: Erected by the Surviving Spouse  4 Suis dulcissimis parentibus: Erected by the Children under Will of Their Parents  5 Conclusions Conclusion Abbreviations of Frequently Mentioned Publications General Bibliography Index

  • Brill The Monumental Inscriptions from Early Islamic Iran and Transoxiana

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisInscriptions on buildings are a distinctive feature of Islamic architecture, and this book studies the 79 surviving monumental inscriptions in the Iranian world from the first five centuries of the Muslim era (A.D. 622-1106), the period in which all the major trends of monumental epigraphy in the area were set. These foundation, commemorative, and funerary texts come from the region between Iraq and Soviet Central Asia. Written primarily in Arabic, they embellished architectural monuments and furnishings whose nature implies the construction of major buildings. An extended introduction discusses such general topics as titulature, patronage, and stylistic development. Each text is then presented individually with photographs, drawings, transcriptions, translations and an extensive commentary, which presents the inscription in its larger palaeographic and historical contexts.Trade Review'...collects together secondary material which is scattered and difficult to locate.' J.M. Rogers, BSOAS, 1992. '...cette somme de travail patient et érudit qui apporte une contribution notable à l'épigraphie arabe.' Solange Ory, Bulletin Critique des Annales Islamologiques, 1993. '...this is a very important work of scholarship which will be of great benefit to a wide range of scholars in different fields of Islamic studies.' Carole Hillenbrand, Journal of Semitic Studies, 1996.

  • Brill Royal Umbrellas of Stone: Memory, Politics, and Public Identity in Rajput Funerary Art

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn Royal Umbrellas of Stone: Memory, Politics, and Public Identity in Rajput Funerary Art, Melia Belli Bose provides the first analysis of Rajput chatrīs ("umbrellas"; cenotaphs) built between the sixteenth to early-twentieth centuries. New kings constructed chatrīs for their late fathers as statements of legitimacy. During periods of political upheaval patrons introduced new forms and decorations to respond to current events and evoke a particular past. Offering detailed analyses of individual cenotaphs and engaging with art historical and epigraphic evidence, as well as ethnography and ritual, this book locates the chatrīs within their original social, political, and religious milieux. It also compares the chatrīs to other Rajput arts to understand how arts of different media targeted specific audiences.

  • Brill (Re)using Ruins: Public Building in the Cities of the Late Antique West, A.D. 300-600

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn (Re)using Ruins, Douglas Underwood presents a new account of the use and reuse of Roman urban public monuments in a crucial period of transition, A.D. 300-600. Commonly seen as a period of uniform decline for public building, especially in the western half of the Mediterranean, (Re)using Ruins shows a vibrant, yet variable, history for these structures. Douglas Underwood establishes a broad catalogue of archaeological evidence (supplemented with epigraphic and literary testimony) for the construction, maintenance, abandonment and reuses of baths, aqueducts, theatres, amphitheatres and circuses in Italy, southern Gaul, Spain, and North Africa, demonstrating that the driving force behind the changes to public buildings was largely a combined shift in urban ideologies and euergetistic practices in Late Antique cities.Trade Review"This book is innovative and underlines transformations in the late antique Mediterranean area. Its approach to reuse is rich, full of nuance, and based on a subtle analysis of all archaeological data. [...] There is no doubt this book will become a reference for the evolutionary processes of public buildings during Late Antiquity". • Brill Syria's Monuments: their Survival and Destruction

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSyria's Monuments: their Survival and Destruction examines the fate of the various monuments in Syria (including present-day Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine/Israel) from Late Antiquity to the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century. It examines travellers’ accounts, mainly from the 17th to 19th centuries, which describe religious buildings and housing in numbers and quality unknown elsewhere. The book charts the reasons why monuments lived or died, varying from earthquakes and desertification to neglect and re-use, and sets the political and social context for the Empire’s transformation toward a modern state, provoked by Western trade and example. An epilogue assesses the impact of the recent civil war on the state of the monuments, and strategies for their resurrection, with plentiful references and web links.Table of ContentsContents Introduction The Extent of Syri Mapping Syria The Syria of Yesterday 1 The State of Syria in Recent Centuries Governance Earthquakes and Disease Trade Circassians and Other Settlers amongst the Monuments Nomadic Arabs Agriculture and Desertification Conclusion: Impact of Ottoman Decline on Antiquities 2 Travel throughout Syria Where to Go and How to Get There Languages, Dress and Descriptions Scholars in the East The Bible as a Guidebook Changing Horizons Meet the Unchanging East Biblical Monuments “Identified” Other Guidebooks: Baedeker, Cook & Murray Confected Guidebooks: An Example Travel then Tourism: The Agony and the Ecstasy Taxes and Robbery Profiteering Sheikhs Haram/Forbidden: Access to Muslim Sites Architectural Quality: Is Syria Worth Visiting?
