And on the California coast, the iconic Madonna Inn featuring 110 rooms, each themed and no two alike.Along the way, authors Margaret and Corey Bienert uncover too many wild details to mention, including unconventional beds (a Cadillac, a clamshell, a sandwich), mirrors on mirrors on mirrors, in-room swimming pools, full suits of armour, and fibre-optic star ceilings. While it's not a travel guide, every destination in Hotel Kitsch is open for business. Reaktion Books Modern Interior
Book SynopsisThrough the impact of shops like Habitat and IKEA, and of the countless glossy magazines, books and catalogues that focus on the concept of 'interior design', we have all become familiar with the idea of our homes and public interiors containing items of modern furniture and decor. Yet design historian and critic Penny Sparke shows that, unlike designed buildings and artefacts, the fixed idea of the 'modern interior' has only ever been an abstract and idealized concept, promoted through exhibitions, retail contexts and the mass media, and that it rarely exists in an absolute form. "The Modern Interior" provides a persuasive account of the forces, conflicts and debates that have underpinned the emergence of something we now effortlessly refer to as the 'modern interior'. Offering fascinating and eloquent insights into the work of international designers including C.R. Mackintosh, Adolf Loos, Josef Frank, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, Lilly Reich, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Philippe Starck, and Charles and Ray Eames, Sparke focuses on the realities as well as concepts of the modern interior, whether in the hands of professional decorators and designers, or in those of its amateur inhabitants. By doing so, she deftly unravels the shift from Victorian to modern style, and demonstrates that the easy transition to the modern interior so frequently portrayed is little more than a mythology. "The Modern Interior" is essential reading for all students of modern design, architecture and culture, as well as anyone interested in why the interior spaces we inhabit look the way they do.Trade ReviewThe visual reticence of this little book ... undersells the expansiveness, diversity and materiality of its subject ... The Modern Interior presents a compelling argument to consider interiors outside the home, just as it charts the complex interplay between public and private in all interiors, domestic and otherwiseise. This persuasive book is a well-crafted and engaging read Times Higher Education a perceptive and thought-provoking reflection on the transitory nature of modern life TLS ... an engaging and colourful potted history of the modern interior from the 1900s through to the present day. RIBA Journal In using examples of design from around the world, including the US, Scandinavia, UK, France, Germany and Italy, The Modern Interior offers some real insight into why the interior environments we inhabit look the way they do. Designer Magazine Fascinating reading for anyone interested in the theory, and practice, of design House & Garden Set to interest design enthusiasts and those with a curiosity for the history of home trends, this compelling title describes the transition from Victorian to avant-garde style. Illustrations of furniture from across the globe shed new light on the emergence of what has become known as the "modern interior". Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Magazine The Modern Interior makes its argument clearly and forcefully with illustrations that effectively illuminate the narrative. Penny Sparke has here focused largely on a coherent interior, tracking it mainly through the built or written work of professional architects, designers, decorators and critics; her book raises the interesting question of how this story played out on the ground, in the multitudinous everyday interiors of ordinary consumers. Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Soviet Design: From Constructivism To Modernism.
Book SynopsisThe Soviet Union has left a vast heritage in interior design that is largely unknown in the West. Other than architecture and graphic or product design, interior design from the Soviet era has not yet been thoroughly investigated. For the first time ever, this book offers a comprehensive survey of the country's interior design culture between revolutionary avant-garde and late Soviet modernism. Drawing on archives that were inaccessible until recently and featuring a wealth of previously unpublished material, it documents the achievements of seven decades in the former socialist empire. Soviet design is often discredited as massive, non-ergonomic and monotonous. Yet a remarkable variety of original styles have emerged behind the iron curtain. The 1920s were marked by bold exploration and experiments at Vkhutemas and by constructivism, rationalism, and suprematism. Early in Stalin's reign constructivism was heavily criticised and post-constructivism and Soviet neo-classicism appeared alongside what became known as 'agitational furniture', inspired by the regime's propaganda. The 1930s brought Soviet Art Deco and eventually Stalinist Empire, which has produced some of the Soviet Union's most iconic buildings. In the late 1950s, after Stalin's death, the last Soviet 'big style' originated modernist and functionalist furniture, mass-produced to fit the small apartments in the Khrushchyovka multi-unit housing developments that were built in cities on a large scale. The 1960s mark the Golden Age of Soviet interior design, showing again influences by the early Soviet Avant-Garde and the Bauhaus, while most of the visionary work of a new generation of designers in the 1970s and 1980s remained unrealised.

Book SynopsisHouses that Sugar Built - An Intimate Portrait of Philippine Ancestral Homes explores the largely unknown architectural legacy to be found in the ancestral houses of Iloilo, Negros Occidental and Pampanga – the three main sugar-producing provinces of the Philippines. These grand residences have yet to receive international exposure. Nonetheless, they are important in two ways. Firstly, although easily classifiable in terms of architectural style, upon experiencing the buildings themselves there are almost always layers of additional influence. Secondly, this assured blending of styles reveals what we might call a ‘Critical Ambition’ – a desire on the part of the patrons who commissioned these residences to participate in an international architectural culture. Their relatively overlooked location did not stop the sugar barons responsible for these houses from undertaking a 20th-century form of the Grand Tour of European capitals, returning with a desire to bring the latest trends from Paris or Vienna to the provincial Philippines, or from partaking of the latest streamlined Moderne style from the US. Beautifully photographed with over 200 pages of interiors that have rarely been seen by the public, Houses that Sugar Built- An Intimate Portrait of Philippine Ancestral Homes is layered with intimate stories and individual house texts that transport us back to a time when these residences were in their heyday.

Rizzoli International Publications La Foce
Book SynopsisDiscover La Foce, the Renaissance villa and classically inspired twentieth-century garden, at the dawn of its hundredth anniversaryonce a barren Tuscan estate brought to life through the extraordinary vision and determination of Iris and Antonio Origo. In 1924, English-born biographer and writer Iris Origo (19021988) and her husband, Antonio, purchased La Foce, a sprawling estate centered around a half-ruined fifteenth-century villa with a dream that was as ambitious as it was audacious. Guided by a deep-seated desire to make a difference, the Origos dedicated their lives to transforming an impoverished terrain into a thriving landscape of wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards. With English architect Cecil Pinsent, they refurbished the house and designed an elegant terraced garden with box hedges, a rose garden, fountains, and a wisteria-covered pergola. The dramatic story of La Focefrom the taming of the wild valley and personal loss to wartime strifeis told by the Origos' granddaughter Katia Lysy, with reminiscences by Benedetta Origo, the couple's elder daughter. The letters and diaries of Iris Origo weave beautifully into a personal narrative of the creation of the property and the people behind it. Newly commissioned photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale, a foldout annotated view of the property, and a recently discovered cache of unpublished images of the creation of the garden in the 1920s bring to life the rich history of the magnificent property.

Now one of America’s most influential designers herself, Alexa Hampton provides a tour of stunning residences from her own portfolio. Editions Norma Decorators of the 60s and 70s
Book SynopsisThe 1960s and 1970s marked a sharp turning point in the history of decoration and furniture. Until that point, the world was confined to national and elitist forms of expression. At the beginning of the 1960s, the sector took its inspiration from Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, Italian and French decoration. Genres were combined in a frenzied desire to live in symbiosis with one's time. The progress of technology strengthened the conviction that the individual had unlimited freedom and aroused the desire to inhabit in a new manner. Forms became rounder, furniture was in sync with a warm, playful, and anticonformist universe. Colours and decorative motifs took on the brilliance and fantasies of Pop Art and psychedelia. The living environment was transformed into a waking dream in which luxurious furniture in original materials and surprising objects were mixed, associated, for the first time, with early furniture. The end of the 1970s marked the advent of a period in which beauty and classic elegance gave way to a host of expressions that were unclassifiable and rejected any hierarchy. The postmodern period had arrived. Composed of a long introduction that provides a synoptic view and 32 monographs that describe its many faces, this book invites the reader to discover an exceptionally creative period and revels in an abundant iconography. Holding a doctorate in art history, Patrick Favardin has organised exhibitions for the city of Paris on varied artistic, historical and literary subjects for many years. Guy Bloch-Champfort has always taken an interest in the decorative arts and contemporary creation. In 2002, he published Raphael, dercorateur at Editions de l'Amateur, a very successful monograph that brought this important creator to the public's attention. Working with many French and international magazines - Connaissance des arts, Maison française, AD, Casa Vogue - for the plastic arts, decorative art, architecture, and design, from the start of the 20th century to the present day, he is naturally interested in decoration in the 1960s and 1970s, which, as in no other period, made contemporary creations and pieces from past centuries coexist. . A panorama of the most innovative decorators of the 1960s and 1970s . A mix of decors and of design pieces that will interest collectors as well as architects and decorators - a brilliant perspective on the 1960s and '70s 300 colour, 150 b/w
