Book SynopsisCawdor, one of Scotland’s most magnificent estates is the focus of Highland Living . Reflecting both the rusticity of the locale and the elegance of the castle’s grounds and interiors, inspiration and visual delights await as the door is opened to the castle’s gardens, kitchens and private apartments. Coupling impressive antiques with cosy creature comforts, Angelika Cawdor has created a charming décor of discerning Scottish style within this historic house. Accompanied by exquisite colour photography, the book opens with a history of Cawdor Castle, from its beginnings in the late 14th century and tales of Macbeth, to the present day in which the estate spans 18,000 acres of forest, grazing land and wildlife management, an exquisite kitchen garden, modern organic gardens, a glorious cutting garden and, of course, the manor with its attractive tapestries and furnishings. Cawdor tartans and Highland colour tones add to the perspective of what life is like on a working estate in Scotland and make this book a page-turner of vibrant images, information and insight. A section on the recipes of Cawdor Castle shows off Scottish culinary traditions—porridge, salmon, and haggis, as well as modern recipes for other traditional delights—partridge, roast rhubarb and apple crumble, and ginger beer, to name a few. The book is completed by an address book of the best places to visit, restaurants and lodges, and shopping for everything from chocolates to organic vegetables. A sumptuous book devoted to a special part of Inverness, Highland Living will be cherished by anyone who adores the traditions of Scotland and Scottish life.

Book SynopsisBelgian interior architect and art historian Anne Derasse, renowned for her prestigious projects in Belgium and abroad, reveals the philosophy of her creations. Her companion, the photographer and artist Jörg Bräuer, captures the atmosphere emanating from these architectures through his superb images. The highly regarded wine château of Calon Ségur in the Médoc, the Delvaux flagship store in Brussels, the Ancienne Nonciature, her base, and the castle of Montmoreau, their lair in the South Charente, reveal her style combining history and contemporaneity, in a refinement and sophistication imbued with sobriety. The choice of works of art completes her artistic approach. I seek to capture and preserve the soul of places, this intangible anchor point between human history and the passage of time. Birkhauser Drawn to Design: Analyzing Architecture Through

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book is a guide for students and teachers to understand the need for, the role of and the methods and techniques of freehand analytical sketching in architecture. The presentation focuses on drawing as an approach to and phase of architectural design. The conceptual goal of this approach is to use drawing not as illustration or depiction, but as exploration. The first part of the book discusses underlying concepts of freehand sketching in design education and practice as a complement to digital technologies. The main component is a series of chapters that constitute a typology of fundamental issues in architecture and urban design; for instance, issues of "façade" are illustrated with sketch diagrams that show how façades can be explored and sketched through a series of specific questions and step-by-step procedures. In the expanded and updated edition, a new part explores the questions and experiences of large architectural offices in applying freehand drawing in the practice of architectural design. This book is especially timely in an age in which the false conflict between "traditional vs. digital" gives way to multiple design tools, including sketching. It fosters understanding of the essential human ability to investigate the designed and the natural world through freehand drawing.

Book Synopsis”Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover“ is the sustainable guideline that has replaced the ”Take, Make, Waste“ attitude of the industrial age. Based on their background at the ETH Zurich and the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, the authors provide both a conceptual and practical look into materials and products which use waste as a renewable resource. This book introduces an inventory of current projects and building elements, ranging from marketed products, among them façade panels made of straw and self-healing concrete, to advanced research and development like newspaper, wood or jeans denim used as isolating fibres. Going beyond the mere recycling aspect of reused materials, it looks into innovative concepts of how materials usually regarded as waste can be processed into new construction elements. The products are organized along the manufacturing processes: densified, reconfigured, transformed, designed and cultivated materials. A product directory presents all materials and projects in this book according to their functional uses in construction: load-bearing, self-supporting, insulating, waterproofing and finishing products.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGreta Magnusson Grossman (1906-1999) was a prolific designer working within the male-dominated world of mid-century modern design, whose status and influence has been largely ignored. Grossman was the ultimate polymath - an industrial designer, interior designer and architect working within two fascinating contexts: Scandinavia and North America. This book gives an overview of Grossman's background and education and the formative years of her career in Sweden, before describing her move to Los Angeles in 1940. While she is remembered for her work as a product and lighting designer, her work as an interior designer has been almost entirely overlooked. This book catalogues and emphasises the significance of her contribution to interior design: making the connections between ideas she tested at the scale of the product within the interior environment. It positions her contribution to interior design in relation to the canon of the genres to which she contributed, her discipline and the emerging canon of women designers - who are only now being recognised, whilst considering her enduring legacy upon the world of design today.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Chapter 1: Stockholm; Chapter 2: Los Angeles; Chapter 3: Interiors; Chapter 4: Dressing the Interior; Chapter 5: Legacies

  • Old Houses Made New

teNeues Publishing UK Ltd Old Houses Made New

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book is a compendium of homes, including apartments and single-family houses, that have been remodeled to suit contemporary lifestyle needs. Rehabilitations of living spaces are often done to reanimate existing constructions that, over time, have become impractical, if not obsolete. The challenge is to adapt these existing buildings to contemporary standards while maintaining what might still be useful or what we like about them. Most old buildings are very compartmentalised, reflecting the human habits of their time and the available building technology. Nowadays, we like to live in much more open and airy spaces — and new building methods allow for the removal of walls that ultimately free up space. We renovate and upgrade living spaces to various degrees, ranging anywhere from upgrading fixtures and appliances to removing and reconstructing walls and expanding buildings. While extensive work is sometimes required, these rehabilitations can result in stunning transformations. Many add comfort and increase utility, not to mention that the investment generally adds value to the property. This inspirational book showcases a range of rehabilitated projects, from ones that begin by totally stripping out interiors to a clean slate, to less extensive work that might be limited to cosmetic changes or simple finish and fixture upgrades. Existing dwellings have proved themselves flexible to changing necessities, and they are key to the regeneration of our living environment. Text in English, German and French.

Book SynopsisScottish architect, designer, and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) was one of the earliest pioneers of modern architecture and design. While he did not receive much recognition in his hometown of Glasgow during his lifetime, his bold new blend of simplicity and poetic detail inspired modernists across Europe. Mackintosh’s avant-garde approach embraced a variety of media as well as fresh stylistic devices. His multi-faceted oeuvre incorporated architecture, furniture, graphic design, landscapes, and flower studies. He embraced strong lines, elegant proportions, and natural motifs, combining an adventurous dose of japonisme with a modernist sensibility for function. He preferred bold black typography, restrained shapes, and tall, generous windows suffusing rooms with light. Much of his work was collaborative practice with his wife, fellow artist Margaret Macdonald. The couple made up half of the loose Glasgow collective known as “The Four”; the other two were Margaret’s sister, Frances, and her husband, Herbert MacNair. On the continent, the “Glasgow Style” was met with delight. In Italy, Germany, and, in particular, Austria, artists of the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau drew much from its rectilinear yet lyrical forms. In this introductory book, we take in Mackintosh’s practice across art, architecture, and design to explore his particular combination of the statuesque and sensual and its vital influence on modernist expression across Europe. Featured projects include his complete scheme for the Willow Tea Rooms and the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art, widely considered Mackintosh’s masterwork.

Book SynopsisWhen she discovered that nearly half of France’s 44,000 heritage sites were chateaux in various states of repair, Catherine Scotto embarked on a journey to find out who, exactly, lived in these medieval fortresses and, more importantly, what they were like on the inside. Each chateau is presented in double-page full-color spreads that feature alluring interiors and information about the hosts and their design journeys. There’s something for everyone here—whether it’s homes where simplicity and minimalism reign, rooms as exuberantly busy as a 14th-century tapestry, or interiors transformed by surprising, era-bending feats. Morel’s breathtaking, naturally lit photographs of generous kitchens, cozy drawing rooms, spacious bedrooms, ingeniously imagined bathrooms, and intriguing hallways and stairwells offer endless inspiration, while Scotto’s engaging text gives readers a feel for the kinds of people who take on such a daunting yet satisfying challenge.

Book SynopsisInterior designer and artist Ashley Hicks presents his photographs and description of the interior design of Buckingham Palace, home of Britain's royal family since 1837. An important representation of Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian styles, the palace is the work of such noted architects as John Nash and Sir Aston Webb. Hicks records the formal spaces with vibrancy, capturing the magnificent rooms furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection.Starting at the Grand Staircase, Hicks leads us through the state rooms, which include the White Drawing Room and the Blue Drawing Room that both overlook the palace gardens; the Ballroom, which is the setting for twenty investiture ceremonies each year; and the Throne Room, used by Queen Victoria for spectacular costume balls in the 1840s. The long, skylit Picture Gallery is hung with important works of art from the Royal Collection by Rembrandt van Rijn, Peter Paul Rubens, Nicolas Poussin, Anthony van Dyck, Johannes VermeeTrade Review"We’ve seen a lot of the exterior of Buckingham Palace, from Queen Elizabeth’s addresses to various royal baby announcements, but rarely do we get such an intimate look at its interiors. Designer Ashley Hicks takes us inside the palace for a look at where we get a tour of the truly sumptuous rooms (the White Drawing Room, the Throne Room, the Picture Gallery) in Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian styles that span the monarchs." —New York Magazine "Royal watchers, history buffs and interior design aficionados alike will enjoy this look at the iconic home of Britain’s royal family. Interior designer Ashley Hicks (a grandson of Lord Mountbatten and brother of lifestyle entrepreneur India Hicks, who was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana) presents his own photographs of the castle’s staterooms, hallways and galleries, and describes the décor and the esteemed history of each. SawyerBerson’s prodigious use of traditional and modern vocabularies has gained the firm widespread recognition and many notable clients. Meticulous attention to detail and versatility combine to create a wide variety of projects. In the Hamptons, a modernist house of stone and glass lets in the sun and sea views while secluded by the dunes and drifts of native grasses. This book reflects that harmonious spirit through projects like a grand East End estate that still embraces the area’s simple shingle vernacular, a midcentury-modern home in Bridgehampton sporting a cantilevered roof terrace, and a Manhattan town house brightened by a brick and ivy garden." —ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST"The first book from Sawyer | Berson illustrates the award-winning firm’s quintessential pairings of modernism and classicism in seaside houses, metropolitan residences, and spectacular garden retreats." —MOFFLY MEDIA""To be modern is not a fashion, but a state," Le Corbusier once said. "It is necessary to understand history, and he who understands history knows how to find continuity between that which was, that which is, and which will be." Few contemporary design firms are as up to the task as Sawyer | Berson, the practice began in 1999 by Brian Sawyer and John Berson. They met in the office of the famed Robert A.M. Stern and developed an approach that treated architecture, landscape design and interior design as equals in the pursuit of an aesthetic beau idéal. This, their first book, is required reading for anyone wishing to understand that which will be." —TOWN AND COUNTRY
