Architectural structure and design Books
Tongji University Press Balance Is More
Book SynopsisWhen a city is pursuing high-speed development and putting massive infrastructure into construction and operation to enable rapid economic growth and efficient urban operation, it will see, quite possibly, increasingly scarce land and resources. And much of its space for people and life lost to economic development, and worse still, the degradation of the environment and the loss of nature... This disequilibrium has set us thinking: what is exactly the purpose of development? Or is it a choice that''s simply not worth making? This book includes the research and design project Shenzhen 2030: Balance is More by Doreen Heng Liu with NODE Architecture & Urbanism at an invitation to Audi Urban Future Award 2012, as well as interviews and articles by experts and scholars in the field of architecture and urbanism. This project, which takes transportation infrastructures as the object of research and design, attempts to reinterpret, deconstruct and reconstruct Shenzhen''s highly efficient urban roads through an interdisciplinary approach. By establishing new supporting systems and reorganising urban mobility, it tries to leave more possibilities of leisure for people and life within limited space and redefine a new balance between economy, society, and environment - a balance that sustains and brings more.Text in English and Chinese.

Copal Publishing Shape Grammar and Space Syntax Approach in
Book SynopsisThe book is an attempt to present a logical approach to contextual design. Architects and designers are always inclined to adopt an intuitive approach to design in historical contexts or surroundings with peculiar characteristics. There is no specific, methodical approach to design in such contexts apart from the ability to identify cues from the surrounding through experience. This book presents a sequential framework wherein one can analyze, synthesize, and generate design genotypes based on the inbuilt spatial grammar of the context. The shape grammar concept as a generative tool is presented to identify the spatial construct''s grammar, which acts as a cue for design genotypes. Space syntax is explored as an analysis tool to evaluate the sympathetic spatial fitness of generated design genotypes.

Promopress Hyperspaces
Book SynopsisThis exhibition presents a selection of fourteen artists from this collection that show different plastic forms in dialogue with the architectural space. Marisa García Vergara, author of the text of this publication, reviews these works in relation to perception, showing how in art the dimensions of space, and therefore its perception, multiply, as other factors that have to do with memory and the affects involved. This book is a work in collaboration with the artist Fernanda Fragateiro, who has worked just as she builds her works: the arrangement, order and fragments of the works, the archive images... The result is a catalog that looks like an artist book.

Editorial Tenov S.L. Formalismo Puro Un repaso a la arquitectura
Book SynopsisCo-opting the discredited format of the history textbook with its didactic tone, well-defined stages, and linear development, David Bestue subverts the cliches of historiography, creating an unorthodox path whilst recovering forgotten ideas and breathing new life into familiar tropes. It is a work that seeks to understand how the landscape is drawn around us. A fresh and very personal reading of our recent history, illuminated by photographs, collages, and gadgets created to explain the reasons of form. Formalismo Puro is an art project in its own right, created by a conceptual artist with a background in sculpture, enthralled by the notion of architecture as form.

Aarhus University Press Circle of Form: Form and Contrast in Architecture
Book SynopsisCircle of Form offers an informative guide to the complex discipline of mastering form, contrast and composition in Architecture. The starting point for this book is our ability to see and think what is similar and what is different. Things can be more or less diverse, but oppositions, contrasts are a particular way to convey the difference. On reflection, opposites are one of the most used methods to quickly and immediately breakdown complex compositions into simple, well-defined but connected pieces. Artists have used this knowledge for centuries because simplicity supports a clear artistic language and oppositions emphasise expression and interaction, whether it is literature, music, painting, sculpture, product design or as in this book: Architecture. The Circle of Form continues this tradition, but with a systematic and modern perspective. The theoretical approach of this book continues the authors previous research into art theories, perception, cognitive theories and neuroscience related to visual experiences.

Silvana Nanda Vigo: Light Project
Book SynopsisA protagonist of the Milanese cultural scene of the 1960s, Italian designer Nanda Vigo (Milan, 1936) began producing her Cronotopi in 1963, in the spirit of ZERO, the transnational group of German, Dutch, French, Belgian, Swiss and Italian artists. Participating in the avant-garde movements and groups of the early sixties, the artist developed her own thoughts on the light, transparency and immateriality that were to constitute her work as well as on the spaces inhabited by human beings. This book showcases the multifaceted activity of Nanda Vigo in the fields of art, architecture and design, analysed by curator Marco Meneguzzo. Text in English and Italian.

Silvana Cohabitats: How will we live together?
Book Synopsis“Architecture shapes the monuments, the memories, and the expressions of societies and groups, creating a common language with which they debate and communicate their experiences and cultures.” - Hashim Sarkis For the Biennale Architettura 2021, in addition to the Exhibition Catalogue and the Short Guide, the curatorial team has put together two distinct volumes, entitled Expansions and Cohabitats, in order to further elaborate on the theme of 'How will we live together?.' These books will appeal to a wide range of readers both from architecture and art communities and beyond, to include anyone who is interested in the role that creative practice can play in collectively answering the complex challenges posed by today’s unstable world. Conceived as a record that delves deeper into a special section of the exhibition, Cohabitats comprises essays and visual material that look to the theme of the Biennale Architettura 2021 from the lens of a specific geographic location. While the main exhibition is primarily organised in five parts that contemplate a new spatial contract at five scales - as diverse beings, as new households, as emerging communities, across borders, and as one planet - this volume as well as the section of the show it is associated with, present analytical examples that speak to all five of them at once. The essays examine past and current practices of coming together in and around Venice, as well as in Addis Ababa, Beirut, India, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, New York, Prishtina, and more. Silvana The Architecture of: Deception / Confinement /
Book SynopsisThe publication The Architecture of Deception / Confinement / Transformation accompanies the eponymously titled exhibition trilogy at BNKR - current reflections on art and architecture in Munich and showcases 18 diverse artistic standpoints at the intersection of art and architecture. Each chapter directly corresponds to the evolving history of the exhibition space, which was originally constructed as a camouflaged air-raid bunker during the Second World War, then used as a postwar internment camp, and finally transformed into its current state as a mixed-use residential and office building. The Architecture of Deception explores notions of illusion and deception, the creation of new realities, truth versus fiction; Confinement explores notions of shelters and safety, captivity and freedom, ‘outside’ versus ‘inside’; Transformation explores notions of gentrification, decay and definition of living spaces. With contributions by the editors, David Adjaye and Nikolaus Hirsch, Isabelle Doucet, and Madeleine Freund. Artists: The Architecture of Deception: Hans Op de Beeck, Emmanuelle Lainé, Bettina Pousttchi, Gregor Sailer, Cortis & Sonderegger, The Swan Collective; The Architecture of Confinement: Ramzi Ben Sliman, Mona Hatoum, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Annika Kahrs, Özgür Kar, Joanna Piotrovska; The Architecture of Transformation: Dana Awartani, Olivier Goethals, Eva Nielsen, Jeremy Shaw, Hannah Weinberger, Andrea Zittel.

Silvana Architecture of Culture: Design Labs II Volume
Book SynopsisArchitecture of Culture is a project which explores the subject of craft preservation from a macroscale, looking at it in relation to local materials, local architecture, and local environments to study its everchanging role and impact on the Emirati community’s sustainability and to revitalise its role in today’s economy and environment. Architects, designers, urbanists, curators, researchers, artists, geologists, biologists, chemists, and craft specialists across the MENASEA, have been invited to contribute to this publication. Crafting connections and empowering women from its base in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council operates a pioneering Council of creative, cultural and commercial initiatives designed to empower women through craft. Spanning the Middle East, North Africa and South-East and Central Asia, Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council’s activities centre on the preservation and promotion of indigenous craft heritage, the engagement of young generations and the development of new international market opportunities. Due to the cultural and sustainable significance of looking inwards and returning to the vernacular, Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council set out to curate an experimental research on the Architecture of Culture by delving into the context of UAE’s cultural heritage, for its Design Labs II initiative: in which the first year focused on a research fellowship with the American University of Sharjah’s College of Architecture, Art and Design.
