Book SynopsisThe Werkgruppe Graz designed the terraced housing estate in Graz-St. Peter in 1965, during a period of societal upheaval. The complex was eventually built between 1972 and 1978. The planning group—members of the avant-garde artists’ association Forum Stadtpark—took a stand against the established system of residential construction, which was characterized by monotone design and the urban sprawl of single-family homes. Instead, they championed the utopian approach of involving residents in the planning process, which was reflected in the development’s basic structuralist framework with adaptable living units. Comprised of four terraced housing blocks in exposed concrete at the edge of Graz, the estate’s sculptural, brutalist appearance received international acclaim. Gelebte Utopie is the first book to provide a collection of texts of architectural commentary and context on the settlement. It additionally offers insights into the inhabitants’ living spaces and is enriched with artistic projects.

Book Synopsis'In the last few decades, the ‘diagram’ has evolved into a constitutive, generative medium for the architectural design process and is now an everyday term used in the context of design. The diagram represents an imaginative process that enables architects to transform typologies, figures, and models using analogue and digital design procedures. This process is creative and erratic – it is highly intuitive and variable and follows its own logic. As such, the diagram, with its lines, points, and strokes, operates at the intersection of geometry, art, and theory.' (from the introduction). The second edition of this book from the series Construction and Design Manuals presents a selection of projects by prominent architects and designers in the form of diagrams, drawn from the fields of architecture, interior design, and installation. This volume also features an essay by the philosopher Lidia Gasperoni.

  • Kazuo Shinohara: The Umbrella House Project

Vitra Design Museum Kazuo Shinohara: The Umbrella House Project

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Umbrella House is the smallest residential home by Japanese architect and mathematician Kazuo Shinohara (1925–2006). This book tells the story of his unique masterpiece, which was first built in Tokyo in 1961. More than sixty years later, a stroke of good fortune made it possible to save the Umbrella House from demolition and move it to a new location, where it now stands on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany). The wooden house’s post-and-beam construction references traditional Japanese domestic and temple architecture. Experts from Japan and Europe supervised the dismantling of the house in Tokyo and its reassembly in Weil am Rhein. The book traces the long journey of the Umbrella House in lavish illustrations including impressions from 1960s Japan, architectural designs and plans, and photographs that document its dismantling and reassembly or show the house in its new location. Texts by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Shin-ichi Okuyama, and David B. Stewart discuss the Umbrella House against the background of Japanese architectural discourse between 1960 and the present. "The strength of my conviction that A House is a Work of Art was born of the struggle with this small house. I wished to express the force of space contained in the doma [earthen-floor room] of an old Japanese farmhouse, this time by means of the geometric structural design of a karakasa [oiled-paper Japanese umbrella]." Kazuo Shinohara in a text on the Umbrella House published in October 1962 in the Japanese architecture journal Shinkenchiku (vol. 37, no. 10; first published in English in February 1963 in The Japan Architect, vol. 38, no. 2).

Book SynopsisThe school is developing into a full-time model in many countries, with homework help, a cafeteria and recreational activities. Pioneering pedagogical methods of instruction and learning are bringing with them changing planning requirements. Just as the classical teaching structure is being broken up, new classrooms are becoming more flexible. When planning, new functional areas and modified principles of spatial organisation have to be considered as well as issues such as inclusion, participatory planning forms, and aspects of sustainability, room comfort, and lighting. This publication deals with various school concepts as spaces for learning, socialising and living and presents 20 project examples from design to final details.

Book SynopsisHistorical evolution and processes of cultural and economic globalization have brought out relevant and frightening risks on a global scale: from urbicide and violence to climate change and an increase in natural disasters, but also an enormous widening of economic and social inequality. Today, humanity as a whole is facing epochal challenges that require a radical metamorphosis of inhabited spaces. Cities Under Pressure illustrates a new design paradigm, an open intervention system that seeks the establishment of a dynamic equilibrium that is continuously renegotiated. Cities Under Pressure imagines and defines new urban environments that abandon a rigid design scheme in favor of growing evolutionary mechanisms capable of embodying the ongoing sustainable transition, so as to guarantee a resilient and peaceful future.

Trade Review"Unverzichtbar." Book SynopsisThe past, present, and future of macro-architecture and how it constructs our landscape and ways of living and interacts with new urban spaces. Back in 1999 the Xunta de Galicia called an International Architecture Competition to build the City of Culture of Galicia on Mount Gaiás in Santiago de Compostela. Twelve proposals by renowned national and international architects' studios were initially submitted to this competition for ideas. Out of all these ideas, the final project to be selected for development was the design by Eisenman Architects, as – to quote the Jury – it was, “unique both in concept and plasticity, and exceptionally in tune with the site's location”. After ten years of intensive debate within Galician society and a meticulous building process, the City of Culture of Galicia is now becoming a reality.
