  • Coins and Economy in Magdala/Taricheae

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Coins and Economy in Magdala/Taricheae

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOn a monetary basis, Magdala must be considered as one of the most important and active settlements between the 1st century BC and most of the 3rd century AD on Lake Kinneret, a place of production and trade, of supply for military forces, certainly in contact with other trading centres, probably located on the Mediterranean coast, however in a 'market' perspective quite different from our current experience and even from the semantic content of this word, often abused with a semantic extension that does not correspond to the experience of the ancients. Its monetary decline started on the early 4th century, when the economic and monetary strategies of the Constantinian era shifted the flow of money to other routes, especially between the great port cities of the Mediterranean. The welcome contribution of Callegher's study derives from the new data published, which allows us to overcome "clichés" and a stereotypical view of both the archaeological site and the economy of the Upper Galilee.

  • Springer Verlag, Japan Learning Strategies and Cultural Evolution during the Palaeolithic

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis volume is motivated by the desire to explain why Neanderthals were replaced by modern humans, in terms of cultural differences between the two (sub-) species. It provides up-to-date coverage on the theory of cultural evolution as is being used by anthropologists, archaeologists, biologists and psychologists to decipher hominin cultural change and diversity during the Palaeolithic. The contributing authors are directly involved in this effort and the material presented includes novel approaches and findings. Chapters explain how learning strategies in combination with social and demographic factors (e.g., population size and mobility patterns) predict cultural evolution in a world without the printing press, television or the Internet. Also addressed is the inverse problem of how learning strategies may be inferred from actual trajectories of cultural change, for example as seen in the North American Palaeolithic. Mathematics and statistics, a sometimes necessary part of theory, are explained in elementary terms where they appear, with details relegated to appendices. Full citations of the relevant literature will help the reader to further pursue any topic of interest.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Experimental Studies of Cumulative Culture in Modern Humans: What are the Requirements of the Ratchet.- Factors Limiting the Number of Independent Cultural Traits That Can Be Maintained in a Population.- Inferring Learning Strategies from Cultural Frequency Data.- The Replacement of Neanderthals by Modern Humans and the Diversity in Cultural Transition Patterns: a Theoretical Perspective.- Simulating Geographical Variation in Material Culture: Were Early Modern Humans in Europe Ethnically Structured?.- “Learning in the Acheulean: Experimental Insights Using Handaxe Form as a ‘Model Organism’.- Behavioral Modernity and the Cultural Transmission of Structured Information: The Semantic Axelrod Model.- Evolution of Culturally Transmitted Teaching Behavior.- Transmission of Cultural Variants in the North American Paleolithic.- Mobility and Cultural Diversity in Central-Place Foragers: Implications for the Emergence of Modern Human Behavior.

  • From Golden Rock to Historic Gem: A Historical

Sidestone Press From Golden Rock to Historic Gem: A Historical

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSt. Eustatius, a small island in the northeastern Lesser Antilles, was one of the busiest ports in the eighteenth-century Atlantic World. Contested between the Dutch, French, and English, the island attracted thousands of ships a year and became one of the most cosmopolitan places in the New World. Moreover, the island played an important role in the American War of Independence (1775-1783), during which large quantities of arms, ammunition, and gunpowder were shipped to the fledgling United States through St. Eustatius.Relics of this turbulent past are found all over the island and in its surrounding waters. These include warehouses in the historic port district, fortifications all around the island, sugar plantations in the countryside, and a variety of underwater archaeological sites such as shipwrecks, anchorage areas, and docks.Through extensive archaeological and documentary research, this study aims to provide a detailed analysis of the maritime cultural landscape of St. Eustatius over the past four centuries. It focuses on bridging the gap between the marine and terrestrial worlds and demonstrates that in order to truly make sense of the complex interactions, events, and processes that shaped this maritime world, both land and sea need to be studied in relation to each other.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements 1. • Byblos

    Sidestone Press Byblos

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisByblos has played an extraordinary role in the history of the Mediterranean. From c. 3200 BC, it developed into the preeminent port of the region due to its strategic location at the foothills of the cedar forests of Mount Lebanon and its unique ties with the pharaohs of Egypt. An important religious center, Byblos was referred to as a Holy City in Hellenistic and Roman times. The city is synonymous with writing, a legacy that lives on through the Greek word for book. With a history that reaches back nearly 8900 years, this Lebanese coastal city is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Byblos: A Legacy Unearthed is the first anthology to be published on this remarkable city. This lavishly illustrated volume encompasses an extensive range of scholarly research, from the earliest archaeological expeditions to the latest discoveries. Its 43 chapters written by leading international experts, examine the city's history from its Neolithic origins to the Medieval era. This book is a coproduction between the National Museum of Antiquities (The Netherlands) and the Ministry of Culture/Directorate General of Antiquities (Lebanon).

  • Current Approaches to Roman Frontiers

Sidestone Press Current Approaches to Roman Frontiers

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis publication Current Approaches to Roman Frontiers is the first volume of the LIMES XXV's congress proceedings arranged around the original sessions, in order to form coherent thematical collections that make the vast output more accessible to generalists and specialists alike. This volume starts with a recap of the congress. Regarding the themes it deals with a contemporary feminist approach; new digital methodologies and computational modelling; three themes on archaeological heritage management dealing inter alia with preservation, protection, citizen science and World Heritage aspects, and a comparison between the Roman Limes and the Great Wall of China. It ends with an overview of the sessions and lectures of the congress in Nijmegen.Frontiers are zones, or lines, of contact and coercion, of exchange and exclusion. As such they often express some of the most typical elements of the socio-political spaces that are defined by them. Spanning some 6,000 km along rivers, mountain ranges, artificial barriers and fringes of semi-desert, the frontiers of the Roman empire offer a wide variety of avenues and topics for a very diverse community of scholars. They are the central subject of the International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies (or just Limes Congress after the Latin word for border'), organised every three years since 1949. This four-volume publication contains most of the papers presented at the 25th edition which was hosted by the municipality of Nijmegen in August 2022.
