Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic Pistiros VI: The Pistiros Hoard
Book SynopsisThis sixth and final installment in the Pistiros series devoted to excavations in that former Greek emporium in inland Thrace (today Bulgaria) closes an extraordinary, three-decade-long collaboration among Bulgarian, Czech, and British classical archaeologists. Pistiros VI details the most important find by the Charles University Prague team of the joint project: a hoard consisting of 549 silver and three gold coins that probably belonged to a mercenary (and likely gambler) serving in Lysimachus's army. The hoard is unique both in being uncovered during regular archaeological excavation, which enabled the team to record precisely the situation of its deposition, as well as in the types of coins it contained, imitated by the first coinage of Central European Celts just after the return of part of their army to an area in modern Bohemia. Illustrated throughout and featuring a full catalog of coins certain to delight numismatists, Pistiros VI is a capstone achievement of great importance in the fields of archaeology and classical studies.

Fundacja im. Rafala Taubenschlaga Deir el-Bahari in the Hellenistic and Roman
Book SynopsisThe temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari at Luxor is one of the most fascinating architectural monuments of Ancient Egypt. It has been explored and reconstructed by Polish archaeologists for several decades and the present volume is the most recent result of these activities. The author tracks the history of the sanctuary in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods when it housed a lively cult of two Ancient Egyptian `saints', the deified sages Amenhotep son of Hapu and Imhotep. The book contains the complete edition of Greek sources connected to this cult, including 320 inscriptions left by pilgrims on the walls of the temple, as well as several ostraca and votive monuments. On the basis of this material, different aspects of the cult are discussed in a synthetic part of the book. These include: the topography of the cult and its history; gods worshipped in the temple; forms of the cult; the economic side of the cult; the visitors of the temple. The study closes with a chapter devoted to Deir el-Bahari in the Late Antique period when the place was frequented by a pagan corporation of ironworkers from Hermonthis.

The Journal of Juristic Papyrology Nubian Voices: Studies in Christian Nubian
Book SynopsisThe book is a collection of articles dealing with various aspects of medieval Nubian literacy. It contains eleven articles by an international group of scholars, representing different areas of language studies (Greek and Latin epigraphy, Coptology, Old Nubian studies). The articles contain both editions of new textual finds and reconsiderations of well-known sources. The chronology of the texts discussed in the book spans a few hundred years of medieval Nubian history (from the 7th until the 15th century) and their topographical distribution covers a large part of the Middle Nile Valley (from Qasr Ibrim in the north to Banganarti in the south) and beyond (northern Kordofan). The typological variety of the sources, with epitaphs, sepulchral crosses, legal documents, visitors' inscriptions, and dipinti on pottery, provides an insight into the richness of the Christian Nubian civilization.

The Journal of Juristic Papyrology JJP Supplement 22 (2014) Journal of Juristic
Book SynopsisBritish excavations at the important archaeological site of Qasr Ibrim have yielded numerous written sources composed in Greek, Coptic, Old Nubian, and Arabic. However, only a small number of them have been published so far, among them some sixty Old Nubian texts, both literary and documents. They were edited between 1988 and 1991 by Gerald Michael Browne. After twenty years of stagnation in this field, Ruffini took up the task initiated by Browne and produced the edition of further sixty-two Old Nubian texts, this time only documents. Texts included in this volume supplement Ruffini’s 2012 monograph (Medieval Nubia. A Social and Economic History) and provide illustrattion for his recosntruciotn of social and economic life of the Middle Nile Valley in the 12th–14th century. The edition of each document is supplied with a photograph as well as extensive linguistic and historical commentary and the volume is accompanied by a set of well organised indices.

The Journal of Juristic Papyrology Empowering the Dead in Christian Nubia: The Texts
Book SynopsisThe crypt of Archbishop Georgios of Dongola that the team from the Polish Centre of Mediterraean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw, headed then by Stefan Jakobielski, discovered in 1993 was astounding to say the least. The walls were literally covered with writing. Lines close together, neat small letters – the first impression was of something of the greatest importance that the dead man wished to take with him to the other world. Even more astounding was the provisional identification of some of the texts, forcing a complete reevaluation of Makurian culture and Christianity in Africa in the early twelfth century. (…) Adam Łajtar and Jacques van der Vliet (…) undertook the task of recording, understanding, and ultimately publishing this astounding selection of texts in Greek and Coptic, this ‘library’ that Archbishop Georgios endeavored to take with him into the afterworld. These texts are known from several different versions, recorded in different languages, and their attestation in Dongola was quite unexpected.
