Taylor & Francis Boundary Stelae Of Akhentaten
Book SynopsisFirst published in 1993. This is a new edition of Akhaenaten's boundary stelae, which now includes information about most of the boundary markers, the tablets were accompanied by statues of Akhenaten, Nefertiti and two of their daughters, all of which stood on low platforms that were raised above the level of the floor. In addition was the awareness that the statues at the site of Stela A were elevated to a greater degree than were the corresponding statues at other sites (insofar as this could be judged from published photographs). The evidence in the publication indicated, moreover, that Stela A, along with Stela B (some two miles south) were the latest of the boundary monuments to be inscribed, since both concluded with a colophon, dated to the end of Akhenaten's eighth regnal year, added to the standard text of the Later Proclamation found on these and other stelae of this series.Table of ContentsDiscovery and previous study of the boundary stelae; the earlier proclamation; the later proclamation; architectural features of the boundary stelae; the boundary stelae as official and historical documents. Appendix: fragments of the boundary stelae no longer in situ; stelae l; principal topics of the inscriptions on the boundary stelae; index of Egyptian words and phrases.

Taylor & Francis Ltd A Story of YHWH
Book SynopsisA Story of YHWH investigates the ancient Israelite expression of their deity, and tracks why variation occurred in that expression, from the early Iron Age to the Persian period. Through this text, readers will gain a better appreciation for the complexities and contexts in the development of YHWH, from its earliest origins to the Persian period. Two interpretive frameworkscultural translation and subversive receptionare offered for filtering through the textual data and contexts. Comparative study with ancient Near Eastern deities and select biblical texts lead readers through early YHWHism, YHWH's original outsider status, and the eventual impact of urbanization on the expression. Perceived and real pressures then challenge urbanite YHWHism and invite new directions for forming a unique expression of divinity in the ancient world. This book is intended for those interested in the study of ancient divinityTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; List of abbreviations; Chapter 1: Purpose and scope; Chapter 2: Competing narratives of early origins; Chapter 3: The rise of YHWH and Jerusalem on the international stage; Chapter 4: YHWH as Israel’s only God: YHWH in the exilic period; Chapter 5: Persian period: the afterlives of YHWHism; Chapter 6: Conclusion and assessment; Bibliography; Index

Taylor & Francis Experiments in Egyptian Archaeology
Book SynopsisIn this new edition of Experiments in Egyptian Archaeology, Denys A. Stocks introduces further experimental research on stoneworking in Ancient Egypt through archaeological and pictorial evidence. A further 20 years of research has been added to the original publication and the book now includes the results of experiments that test and evaluate over 250 reconstructed and replica tools, bringing alive the methods and practices of Ancient Egyptian craftworking. This practical approach to understanding the fundamentals of Ancient Egyptian stoneworking highlights the evolution of tools and techniques, and how these come together to produce the wonders of Egyptian art and architecture. A new chapter on Predynastic industrial transitions and convergence explores how the surge in technology, particularly in the expanding production of stone vessels and in the production of faience artifacts, drove the expansion of the economy of the Late Predynastic period in EgyptTable of ContentsIntroduction Part 1 Skills and Tools: Fledgling Industrialists 1 Craftworking: Industry’s Driving Force 2 The Cutting Edge 3 A Flint for all Seasons Part 2 High Priests of Industry: The State’s Influence on Technology 4 The Abrasive Technologists 5 Making Stone Vessels 6 The Development of Stone Sarcophagus Manufacture 7 Master Masonry Fitters Part 3 Industrial Revolution in Ancient Egypt 8 Theban Mass-Production Tools 9 By-Products from a Bygone Age 10 Predynastic Transitions and Convergence 11 Ancient Technical Interrelationships

Taylor & Francis Pliny and the Eruption of Vesuvius
Book SynopsisPliny and the Eruption of Vesuvius is a forensic examination of two of the most famous letters from the ancient Mediterranean world: Pliny the Younger's Epistulae 6.16 and 6.20, which offer a contemporary account of the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79.These letters, sent to the historian Tacitus, provide accounts by Pliny the Younger about what happened when Mt Vesuvius exploded, destroying the surrounding towns and countryside, including Pompeii and Herculaneum, and killing his uncle, Pliny the Elder. This volume provides the first comprehensive full-length treatment of these documents, contextualized by evidence-rich biographies for both Plinys, and a synthesis of the latest archaeological and volcanological research which answers questions about the eruption date. A new collation of sources results in a detailed manuscript tradition and an authoritative Latin text, while commentaries on each letter offer copiously referenced insights on their structure, styleTrade Review"I have profited much from reading this book. It is well-researched, and its main strength lies in providing a welcome synopsis of the various disciplines which deal with Pliny and the eruption of Vesuvius. The book will certainly become a standard work for those studying and teaching the Vesuvius letters and, hopefully, encourage more interdisciplinary projects on the Epistles in general." - Paolo L. Bernardini, La Provincia[It is a masterly interpretation, or rather, fine-tuning, of the joint events of the two Plinii, which also includes the new translation and exegesis of the two fundamental letters of the Younger, to Tacitus, where he narrates the events of the death of his famous uncle, and of the eruption of Vesuvius...Pedar Foss admirably reminded us how from history endless stories unfold, all worthy of attention, never boring, if scientifically approached, asking the right questions, and possessing the intellectual means to answer them.]"Pliny and the Eruption of Vesuvius is an indelible masterpiece, in my estimation, representing the pinnacle of literary achievement in the realm of the iconic Vesuvian eruption. The author’s ingenious fusion of linguistic scrutiny of Pliny’s letters with a rigorous exploration of archaeological and volcanological dimensions paints an enthralling portrait of the eruption’s unfolding events." - Claudio Scarpati, GeologosTable of ContentsPrologue: Lightning, Water, and Fire 1. Book SynopsisThis focused study is one of the few analytical resources in English that covers the ancient and early medieval history of one of the least studied areas of the vast mountainous Pamir region of Central Asia: Shughnan. The book brings together scattered fragments of information from a wide range of early Greek, Chinese, Persian, and Arabic sources, the accounts of early European travellers and the scholarly contributions of Soviet and post-Soviet authors, as well as personal accounts and oral history material from the region. Drawing on historical, archaeological, linguistic, and ethnographic data, it provides a holistic overview of the kingdom of Shughnan. Taylor & Francis Foreigners Among Us
Book SynopsisAssessing key questions such as who the foreigners and outsiders in ancient Maya societies were and how was the foreign a generative component of identity, Foreigners Among Us reassess the arrival of foreigners as part of archaeological understandings of Pre-Columbian Maya and questions not only who these foreigners might have been but who were making such designations of difference in the first place. Drawing from identity studies, standpoint theory, and ideas on alterity, Foreigners Among Us highlights the diverse ways being foreign was constituted, imitated, and marked from quotidian practices of making corn tortillas to ceremonial acts between king and captive and their memorialization in scenes on sculpted stone monuments. Rather than treat the foreign as axiomatically determined by geographical distance or fixed at birth, the book considers the foreign as much performed as inherited. It examines practices of captivity, cuisine, body Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction, Chapter 2 Tropes of the Foreigner: From Famous Royals to Humble Migrants, Chapter 3 Captive Performances: Spectacles and the Everyday, Chapter 4 Cuisines and the Relational Making of People, Chapter 5 Pilgrimages to Foreign Places and the Acts of Becoming, Chapter 6 Looking In From Afar: Representations of Mayas, Chapter 7 Conclusion, References.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Dynamics and Developments of Social Structures
Book SynopsisThis volume substantiates the island of Cyprus as an important player in the history of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean and Near East, and presents new theoretical and analytical approaches. The Cypriot Neolithic, Chalcolithic, and Bronze Age are characterised by an increasing complexity of social and political organisation, economic systems, and networks. The book discusses and defines how specific types of material datasets and assemblages, such as architecture, artefacts, and ecofacts, and their contextualisation can form the basis of interpretative models of social structures and networks in ancient Cyprus. This is explored through four main themes: approaches to social dynamics; social and economic networks and connectivity; adaptability and agency; and social dynamics and inequality. The variety and transition of social structures on the island are discussed on multiple scales, from the local and relatively short-term to island-wide and eastern Mediterranean-wide and tTable of Contents 1. Taylor & Francis Vikings of the Steppe
Book SynopsisThis book explores the relationship between Vikings, Rusâ and nomadic (mostly Turkic) steppe dwellers during the course of the Viking Age (c. 750â1050) in a geographical area stretching from Eastern Scandinavia through the Kievan Rusâ, Byzantium, the Islamic world to the Western Eurasian steppes. The primary focus is the steppe influence on the development of Scandinavian-Rusâ culture. It illustrates the effects of Turkic (nomadic) cultures on the evolving Scandinavian-Rusâ communities in their military technology and tactics, as well as in everyday customs, ritual traditions and religious perceptions, whilst paying attention to the politico-commercial necessities and possible communication channels tying these two cultures, normally considered to be distinct, together. The arguments are supported by a multi-disciplinary analysis of diverse historical and archaeological materials occasionally supplemented with linguistic evidence.
