Book SynopsisThis textbook presents quantum mechanics at the junior/senior undergraduate level. It is unique in that it describes not only quantum theory, but also presents five laboratories that explore truly modern aspects of quantum mechanics. These laboratories include proving that light contains photons, single-photon interference, and tests of local realism. The text begins by presenting the classical theory of polarization, moving on to describe the quantum theory of polarization. Analogies between the two theories minimize conceptual difficulties that students typically have when first presented with quantum mechanics. Furthermore, because the laboratories involve studying photons, using photon polarization as a prototypical quantum system allows the laboratory work to be closely integrated with the coursework.Polarization represents a two-dimensional quantum system, so the introduction to quantum mechanics uses two-dimensional state vectors and operators. This allows students to become comfortable with the mathematics of a relatively simple system, before moving on to more complicated systems. After describing polarization, the text goes on to describe spin systems, time evolution, continuous variable systems (particle in a box, harmonic oscillator, hydrogen atom, etc.), and perturbation theory. The book also includes chapters which describe material that is frequently absent from undergraduate texts: quantum measurement, entanglement, quantum field theory and quantum information. This material is connected not only to the laboratories described in the text, but also to other recent experiments. Other subjects covered that do not often make their way into undergraduate texts are coherence, complementarity, mixed states, the density operator and coherent states.Supplementary material includes further details about implementing the laboratories, including parts lists and software for running the experiments. Computer simulations of some of the experiments are available as well. A solutions manual for end-of-chapter problems is available to instructors.Trade ReviewI think this is an excellent text, and I recommend it strongly for an advanced undergraduate course in quantum mechanics. * mark Fox, University of Sheffield, Contemporary Science *Table of ContentsPreface ; Table of Symbols ; 1 Mathematical Preliminaries ; 2 Classical Description of Polarization ; 3 Quantum States ; 4 Operators ; 5 Measurement ; 6 Spin-1/2 ; 7 Angular Momentum and Rotation ; 8 Two-Particle Systems and Entanglement ; 9 Time Evolution and the Schrodinger Equation ; 10 Position and Momentum ; 11 Wave Mechanics and the Schrodinger Equation ; 12 The Harmonic Oscillator ; 13 Wave Mechanics in Three Dimensions ; 14 Time-Independent Perturbation Theory ; 15 Time-Dependent Perturbation Theory ; 16 Quantum Fields ; 17 Quantum Information ; Laboratories ; Getting Started ; Before Lab ; Important Laboratory Safety Tips ; Lab 1: Spontaneous Parametric Downconversion ; Lab 2: 'Proof' of the Existence of Photons ; Lab 3: Single Photon Interference ; Lab 4: Quantum State Measurement ; Lab 5: Testing Local Realism

The number of textbooks in mathematical finance is increasing much faster than the number of revolutionary contributions to the field, but this text stands above the crowd." SIAM Review, December 2005 From the reviews of the second edition: "The book is very carefully formatted. … this book is a valuable addition to a graduate student’s reference collection. The number of textbooks in mathematical finance is increasing much faster than the number of revolutionary contributions to the field, but this text stands above the crowd." (Alexandre D’Aspremont, SIAM Reviews, December, 2005) "The emphasis of the first edition of this book was on developing the mathematical concepts for the rapidly expanding field of mathematical finance. This second edition contains a significant number of changes and additions … . The target audience is readers with sound mathematical background on elementary concepts from measure-theoretic probability … . It should be an equally valuable resource to practitioners interested in the mathematical tools … . will be a very useful addition to any scholarly library." (Theofanis Sapatinas, Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 32 (6), 2005) "The second edition adds new matieral from current active research areas. A new chapter on coherent risk measures for instance reflects the recent trend in research and applications in the area of risk management. In summary, this is an excellent textbook in mathematical finance, and I can definitely recommend it." (S. Peng, Short Book Reviews of the ISI, June 2006)Table of ContentsPricing by Arbitrage * Martingale Measures * The Fundamental Theorem of Asset Pricing * Complete Markets and Martingale Representation * Stopping Times and American Options * A Review of Continuous Time Stochastic Calculus * European Options in Continuous Time * The American Option * Bonds and Term Structure * Consumption-Investment Strategies *

Book SynopsisThis graduate textbook covers topics in statistical theory essential for graduate students preparing for work on a Ph.D. The first chapter provides a quick overview of concepts and results in measure-theoretic probability theory that are useful in statistics.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews of the second edition: "The second edition of Mathematical Statistics continues to hold its identity among many other available books on mathematical statistics...The revised and updated version remains of high quality, and I recommend it for use as a text or reference book in a graduate statistics program." Journal of the American Statistical Association, September 2004 "The first edition of this book was published in 1999 … . The main changes include addition of new material in Chapter 1, addition and deletion of a number of exercises, addition of two new sub-sections … . The book remains valuable to instructors and graduate students of traditional mathematical statistics courses, specially for its large collection of problems and for its rigourous presentation." (Arup Bose, Sankhya: The Indian Journal of Statistics, Vol. 65 (3), 2003) "This book is intended for an advanced postgraduate course in Mathematical Statistics, offered in a mathematically rigorous fashion. … in order to get to grips with rigorous mathematical statistics, this is an ideal book. Also, as a reference book, it is ideally suited. … Two particularly attractive features of the book are the large number of exercises at the end of each chapter – well over a hundred in each chapter, and the fact that asymptotic theory is studied throughout the book … ." It provides an excellent foundation to more advanced courses in the subject."Short Book Reviews, Vol. 23/3, Dec. 2003 "This edition is the third revision of a text on mathematical probability first published in 1974. The text is aimed at undergraduate mathematics students and is accessible to a general audience. The prose is accurate, entertaining, and dense with historical tidbits. Two concluding chapters on mathematical finance have been added to the eight chapters in the third edition by the second author." The American Statistician, May 2004 From the reviews of the fourth edition: "The main novelty in the fourth edition of this well-written book is the addition of new chapters … . The new chapters share the friendly yet rigorous style of the former ones. They begin with an account of the financial vocabulary, which is then expounded in probabilistic terms. … Almost thirty years after its first edition, this charming book continues to be an excellent text for teaching and for self study." Book SynopsisIntended for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, this text is based on the highly successful course given by Walter Greiner at the University of Frankfurt, Germany.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: "What makes Greiner’s volumes of particular value to the student and professor alike is their completeness … Moreover, Greiner greatly increases the value of his presentation by including something like one hundred completely worked examples in each volume. Nothing is of greater importance to the student than seeing, in detail, how the theoretical concepts and tools under study are applied to actual problems of interest to working physicists … Greiner’s lectures … are internationally noted for their clarity, for their completeness, and for the effort that he has devoted to making physics an integral whole. His enthusiasm for his sciences is contagious and shines through almost every page." D. Allan Bromley, Yale University "This softcover publication … is based on the author’s courses at the J. W. Goethe University in Frankfurt. … Although the textbook, by its remarkable completeness, seems to be intended for advanced students and aims to be a reference book for graduate students and teachers, it is sufficiently understandable and extensive to be used by beginners as a first introduction to theoretical physics. It does not only provide a survey of classical theoretical mechanics, but also a respectable amount of examples and problems … ." (Georges Kohnen, Physicalia, Vol. 57 (3), 2005) "This volume of lectures … deals with the first and more elementary part of the important field of classical mechanics. The subject is presented in a manner that is both interesting to the student and easily accessible. The main text is therefore accompanied by many exercises and examples that have been worked out in great detail. This should make the book useful also for students wishing to study the subject on their own. … A worthwhile purchase for graduate students in physics … ."
