American Furniture Designers: 1900 to the Present highlights the furniture produced by the 20 most important American furniture designers of the 20th and early 21st centuries plus a selection of the best-known European designers whose work is sold by Knoll International and Herman Miller. The designers are organized into five chapters. Introductions to each section summarize the evolution of furniture design as it evolved through the 20th and early 21st centuries. The book begins with the Arts and Crafts era before World War I; moves into the interwar period when Modernism gained a foothold in America; continues through the Postwar heyday of Mid-century Modern; highlights the furniture from the 1970s and into the 21st century with a focus on the foremost promoters of modern furniture, Knoll International and Herman Miller; and concludes with a selection of the top Studio Furniture makers and their innovative creations. The book focuses on the leading American designers from each of these periods including Gustav Stickley and Charles Rohlfs during the Arts and Crafts movement, Paul Frankl and Gilbert Rohde in the interwar period, Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson for Mid- century Modern, and Wendell Castle and George Nakashima for Studio Furniture to name just a few. All their furniture is explained and profusely illustrated with 280 color photos. For anyone curious about the modern material culture that surrounds them, the book will explain everything about American furniture from 1900 into the 21st century: when it was made, where it was made, who made it, what it was made of, how it was designed, how long it was in production, and how the furniture related to its contemporaries. New Amsterdam Books The Story of Western Furniture

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAs well as fulfilling a functional need, furniture has always been an index of status. From the throne of Tutankhamen or the bed of State of Louis XIV to the austere Shaker chest or the Charles Eames chair and later modern pieces from Europe, the Far East and the United States, the style of each piece tells much about the outlook of the makers and the needs and skills of the time. This absorbing history traces the development of furniture design and production, from the days of ancient Egypt to the present, describing what articles were made in each period, how they were made, and what were the social and economic conditions that affected style and finish. The author discusses techniques such as joinery, turning, veneering, marquetry, polishing, upholstery, bentwood work and lamination. Many examples are shown in the illustrations, which are invaluable recognition sources and a lively visual accompaniment to the text.Trade ReviewI find it very well done: admirably designed.... A surprising quantity of information, visual as well as verbal, has been packed into a relatively small space. -- Sir James RichardsA well-organized survey of a fascinating subject. -- David Pearce * Riba Journal *

Book SynopsisAn exploration of Chinese art and culture, Bamboo in China shines a light on this relatively unknown craft. The noted British scholar Joseph Needham concluded from his thorough study of the history of Chinese science and technology that the "East Asian civilization is none other than a bamboo civilization" and China is just the cradle of that bamboo civilization. Since bamboo has been used for thousands of years in China and in many aspects of daily life, it became an influential part of the Chinese culture. With the tributes to bamboo and the extolling of its strengths, it was further blended into China's Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist thinking to give birth to a cultural phenomenon uniquely Chinese that has since spread far and wide. This beautifully illustrated book presents a vivid history of bamboo in China: The uses of bamboo in daily life, production, musical instruments, transportation, architecture and landscaping, hydraulic engineering and the military Traditional treatments of bamboo by Chinese artisans, including two main artistic processing techniques. • Chinoiserie

    Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Chinoiserie

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisChinoiserie, a decorative style inspired by the art of the Far East, gripped Britain from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. Despite taking its name from the French word for ‘Chinese’, the style also incorporated influences from other Asian countries, helping to shape the period’s popular fantasy of the ‘exotic Orient’. Wealthy consumers jostled to obtain imported wallpaper, lacquered cabinets and hand-painted porcelain, while domestic manufacturers such as Royal Worcester and Chippendale met demand with mass-produced items of their own. Though interest in the style waned as the Gothic Revival took hold, many examples of Chinoiserie have been preserved. In this beautifully illustrated book, Richard Hayman tells the story of this fascinating phenomenon, and explores the profound impact of Chinoiserie on the material culture of the West.Trade ReviewWith over 50 full-colour illustrations, this small book is a delightful and informative introduction to an interesting phenomenon. * The Historian *Table of ContentsChinese Whispers Anglo-Chinese Trade The Chinese Room Objects Chinese Buildings Revival Further Reading Places to visit Index

Book SynopsisEveryday Antiques shows how to introduce antique and vintage pieces into every room in the house to create a home that’s individual, comfortable, and stylish. For most of us, decorating is not about taking an empty room and filling it with all-new co-ordinated furnishings, nor is it a case of inheriting matching sets of priceless antiques. Usually, we’re somewhere in the middle—a couple of hand-me-downs here, some big-box items there, plus a few antique or vintage or simply secondhand pieces thrown into the mix. In Everyday Antiques Katherine Sorrell shows how to harmoniously combine these unexpected and individual older pieces with new ones to make your home sing—an old portrait that was a lucky fleamarket find, perhaps, a set of 1960s glassware found at a thrift store, or an ornate gilt-framed mirror that belonged to your grandma. Incorporating such gems into your home has never been easier, thanks to online marketplaces such as eBa

But it’s also about a sense of history and place, about individuality, and creating a home that reflects your life and personality. Every piece has a story: the colourful jug you found at a car boot fair, the vintage telephone that belonged to a favourite aunt, the little chair you found in a village junk shop, or the old trashcans that have been converted into fashionable zinc planters. • Collinson & Lock: Art Furnishers, Interior

Troubador Publishing Collinson & Lock: Art Furnishers, Interior

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisVictorian furnishers and decorators Collinson & Lock were a model of the art furniture business of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This book is the first wide-ranging study of this once highly important company. It will give insights into the workings and productions of a London furnishing business in the period. It also provides information on a wide variety of topics including furniture design developments, interior design styles, business practices, working practices and techniques, and the firm’s customers and competitors. Clive Edwards first considers the structure of the London ‘art furniture’ trade and its development to locate the firm in its community. He then traces the growth of the firm’s business, its involvement with important international exhibitions, the designers they worked with, and the furniture and interiors they produced. This important book then outlines and discusses Collinson & Lock’s creations ranging from seminal pieces that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed at national and international exhibitions between 1871 and 1900, through to batch produced objects that still maintained the quality and design that the firm was famous for. The involvement of the firm with both public and private interior decoration commissions is also examined through case studies, including those in the Anglo-Japanese, Queen Anne, Old English, and Renaissance styles used in the later Victorian period. Drawing on the author's extensive knowledge of nineteenth-century furniture and interiors, this book meets a need for a fully researched and illustrated reference work on this famous firm. If you have an interest in the history of furniture and interior design, if you are involved with furniture collections either on a private basis or professionally, or you simply have an interest in the decorative arts and culture of the period, this book should be on your shelves.

  • Oak Furniture: The British Tradition

ACC Art Books Oak Furniture: The British Tradition

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisVictor Chinnery's scholarly work covers the history and development of furniture in oak and kindred timbers in the British Isles and New England, from the Middle Ages through to 1800. The subject is broken down into a logical sequence of aspects and each section is generously illustrated. The furniture shown ranges from the finest examples of the period, to the sort of sturdy and workmanlike pieces which modern collectors will find affordable. The study of oak furniture is a remarkably rich and varied subject, which reflects at several levels the social and domestic life of many generations of our ancestors. Victor Chinnery has explored and clarified many important topics, whilst fully realising that scholarship in this field is still very much in its infancy. One of the most profound influences on the appearance of furniture in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was the system of rigid demarcations operated by the different furniture making trades, and in which the work of the joiners was the most important. The author explains the techniques and materials of the different trades, as well as other considerations of vital interest to the modern collector and curator. The furniture of Connecticut and Massachusetts in the seventeenth century is presented as an extension of the range of styles to be found in other English provinces at the same date.Trade ReviewChinnery's book remains a significant summary of its subject, covering forms, materials, techniques, finishes, regional styles, and social history in a thorough manner... it remains a good place to start for learning about furniture of its period. Out of stock

Book SynopsisHeadrests from Southern Africa - The architecture of sleep presents the subject of southern African headrests in a fascinating new light. The book, richly illustrated – often with in situ photographs, offers unique historical and personal information collected from many of the original owners and carvers of the headrests. So, for the first time African headrests are brought to life with detailed information and the stories of their creation, ownership, use and significance. The 438 headrests from the collections of Bruce Goodall from Cape Town and Frédéric Zimer from Paris are presented according to 3 geographical areas: KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo (where the Ntwane people live) and Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland). Since 2003, Goodall has made numerous field trips collecting, as well as interviewing and photographing the owners and carvers of headrests. In 2017, Goodall’s collection grew substantially with the purchase of a comprehensive collection of headrests from the Msinga area of KwaZulu-Natal. This collection had been assembled and meticulously documented by the late Anglican priest Clive Newman and his friend and assistant, Mavis Duma, between the late 1980s and the mid-2000s. The Zimer collection has been built up since the 1990s through his many travels in Africa, and his acquisitions from collectors and African art dealers around the world. This publication not only offers insight into the personal and historical dimensions of this important southern African tradition through the text written about the headrests and their owners by Bruce Goodall, but includes essays by Newman, Nel and Leibhammer and a text about collecting by Duma. Together these facilitate a penetrating understanding of these valued items as well as a respectful appreciation of the cultures and individuals who made and used them.Table of Contents7 Foreword Bruce Goodall 11 Preface Frédéric Zimer 13 Introduction Sandra Dodson 17 Zulu Headrests of the Msinga District in KwaZulu-Natal Clive Newman 23 Climbing Mountains and Crossing Rivers Mavis Duma 27 The Architecture of Sleep: The Significance of Headrests Karel Nel 41 From Generic to Specific: Locating Headrests in History Nessa Leibhammer 60 Map 63 The KwaZulu-Natal Region Bruce Goodall [65] Northern Msinga - Including Pomeroy [129] Southern Msinga - Including Muden [189] West of Msinga [253] Bergville and Surrounding Regions [281] Nongoma and Surrounding Regions [297] Early Collected Headrests 311 Eswatini and Outlying Areas Bruce Goodall 377 The Limpopo Region Bruce Goodall 430 Notes 432 Bibliography 434 Glossary 436 Biographies
