Book SynopsisThis book offers a radical reassessment of the significance of the Oxford Movement and of its leaders, Newman, Keble, and Pusey, by setting them in the context of the Anglican High Church tradition of the preceding 70 years. No other study offers such a comprehensive treatment of the historical and theological context in which the Tractarians operated.Trade Review'A remarkable study which substantially rewrites an important slice of Anglican history: that which explains the antecedents, and so diagnoses the essence, of the Oxford Movement … Everyone concerned about the identity of Anglicanism should read this book.' Jonathan Clark, The Spectator'… definitive and indispensable … this book will be a standard text for any serious student of the subject.' James Garrard, Theology'A fine work of scholarship that deserves to stand as an authority for students of ecclesiastical history for years to come.' David Newsome, The Times Higher Education Supplement'… a … mature, and nuanced work … based upon an impressive range of new (or little known) manuscripts and printed sources, meticulously researched … What we are given here is what was, previously, so often lacking in study of the Oxford Movement: an adequate political and religious context in which to evaluate the remarkable transformation of the high church tradition into the 1830s and 40s … This important book has already made its mark.' Perry Butler, Heythrop JournalTable of ContentsHistoriographical introduction; 1. Church and state: the politics of high churchmanship; 2. Antiquity and the rule of faith; 3. Book SynopsisAs the leader of the Oxford or Tractarian Movement, Newman's influence continues to be felt on Anglicanism, and he is regarded by many as 'the Father' of the Second Vatican Council. His theology anticipates central themes in contemporary theology, and he can be viewed as a post-modern theologian.Trade Review'… we almost have an embarrassment of riches from an international team of Newman scholars. … this [book] will prove of enormous help to those coming to the Cardinal's work for the first time.' Contemporary Review'By raising the issues that mattered to him [Newman] in ways that stimulate and challenge readers, it encourages them to explore those issues further for themselves.' Theology'The Cambridge Companion to [John Henry] Newman is a splendid volume. The bench of contributors is tremendous and the authors manage to strike a balance between providing nifty summaries of aspects of Newman's thought (useful for the general reader) and more focused speculations about the intricacies of Newman's theologising (which will thrill specialists).' The final chapter includes sample sermons, which put the Six Question method into practice.Table of ContentsContentsIntroduction: Listening to Scripture for Preaching: A Discipline in Need of Remediation1. • Where God Happens: Discovering Christ in One

New Seeds Where God Happens: Discovering Christ in One

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe place 'where God happens,' according to Rowan Williams's striking new reading of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, is between each other. It's a truth that we of the twenty-first century most urgently need to learn in order to heal the experience of alienation that has become endemic to our age, and these odd and appealing ancient figures, surprisingly, hold keys to this healing. The fourth-century Christian hermits of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine understood the truth of Christian community profoundly, and their lives demonstrate it vividly—even though they often lived in solitude and isolation. The author breaks through our preconceived ideas of the Desert Fathers to reveal them in a new light: as true and worthy role models—even for us in our modern lives—who have much to teach us about dealing with the anxieties, uncertainties, and sense of isolation that have become hallmarks of modern life. They especially embody valuable insights about community, about how to live together in an intimate and meaningful way. Williams makes these radical figures, who clearly have a special place in his heart, come to life in a new way for everyone. The book includes an appendix of selections from the teachings of the Desert Fathers.

  • John Newman: Selected Writings to 1845

Carcanet Press Ltd John Newman: Selected Writings to 1845

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThis selection from the most productive Christian pen of the 19th century is also an introduction to one of its most compelling and troubled minds. John Henry Newman (1801-1891) was a dominant figure in both the Anglican and the Roman Catholic churches. His writings and his human presence in Oxford and elsewhere had an abiding impact on both communions and contribute still to the spirit of ecumenicism. This bok concentrates on Newman's life and work up to 9 October 1845, the mid-point of his life and the moment be became a Roman Catholic. He was a prolific and subtle writer, a great prose artist whose sermons, tracts and polemics, together with a talent for organization and an ability to inspire others to faith and action, launched the Oxford Movement and the controversies that still follow from it. The 12 years between 1833 and 1845 are among the most important for English Christianity, and they were shaped for the most part by the pen and energy of Newman, a rather shy, quiet Oxford don, whose enduring legacy was to restore to the Church of England its Catholic heritage. Newman was complex and sometimes contradictory as a man, and even in his most formal writings the man is present, responding to social and political pressures of church and state. A great communicator, with a need for self-disclosure, he is nonetheless revealed "and" concealed in his writings.

  • Vital Christianity: The Life and Spirituality of

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Vital Christianity: The Life and Spirituality of

Book Synopsis William Wilberforce (1759-1833) was a truly inspiring man. An evangelical Christian, he was the key voice that led to the abolition of Slavery in the British Empire, which then led it's ultimate abolition worldwide. Abolishing slavery was, according to Wilberforce's critics, impractical, idealistic and fantastically uneconomic. But Wilberforce was convinced that Slavery was an evil that needed to be eradicated, and was finally fulfilled a mere three days before his death. What would have happened if William Wilberforce had followed the conventional wisdom of today and kept his religious beliefs separate from his political opinions?, or not tried to "impose his beliefs on others"?, or had allowed the desire to be "relevant", "tolerant" and "popular" to outweigh any desire to stand for what was right? This is a fascinating look at William Wilberforce's life. The energy, persistence and unashamedly evangelical faith is a shining example to all Christians today. The parallels for the Christian today who holds the unpopular positions that following Christ entails, should be abundantly clear. Trade Review"Some books, said Bacon, should be tasted (and then left), some swallowed (that is, read casually), and "some few chewed and digested," that is read through with care and thought. This book flows so smoothly that it could easily be swallowed, but with Christian role-models of stature currently in such short supply I believe it belongs in Bacon's third class; and it is as such that I recommend it to you." -- J. I . Packer ((1926–2020), Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada)If one wishes to know how William Wilberforce came to be who he was, what he believed and how he acted upon it, read Murray Pura's Vital Christianity. This book is, and I hope will be for years to come, an invaluable resource. -- Kevin Belmonte, Director of The Wilberforce Project at Gordon College"The relatively brief account of the life of William Wilberforce deserves to be widely read by modern Evangelicals. The book records how God honoured Wilberforce's devotion in amazing ways. It is well written, thought-provoking, challenging and encouraging, and is highly recommended." -- Wesley Johnston, Evangelical TimesMurray Pura has written a significant study of the key influences on the thought and spirituality of William Wilberforce, one that should be consulted by anyone seeking to understand the great abolitionist. -- Donald M. Lewis, Editor, The Blackwell Dictionary of Evangelical Biography
