She is the author of The Invention of a People: Heidegger and Deleuze on Art and the Political (2015) and co-editor of Deleuze and the Schizoanalysis of Feminism (Bloomsbury, 2019).Trade Review‘Lampe and Sholtz have put together a uniquely informative collection showing the extensive and sometimes surprising influence of Stoic ideas on recent French and Italian thinkers including such luminaries as Sartre, Deleuze, Badiou, Kristeva, Foucault and Agamben, as well as thinkers who should be better known in the English-speaking world (and perhaps now will be) like Barbara Cassin and Pierre Hadot.’ * Alistair Welchman, Professor of Philosophy, University of Texas at San Antonio, USA *'French and Italian Stoicisms presents a valuable overview of the often subtle and surprisingly diverse ways in which ancient Stoic philosophy has influenced modern thinkers such as Sartre, Deleuze, Kristeva, Foucault, Agamben, and Hadot. The contributors to this book are themselves revitalizing Stoicism by drawing our attention to unfamiliar perspectives on a tradition, which deserves to be explored and evaluated by us now more than ever before.' * Donald Robertson, author of Stoicism and the Art of Happiness and How to Think Like a Roman Emperor. *This volume breaks new ground in its close examination of French and Italian twentieth-century responses to Stoicism, especially on the topics of language and freedom. A series of thoughtful and perceptive essays open up a complex intellectual terrain that will be of interest both to students of modern Continental philosophy and Stoicism. * Christopher Gill, Emeritus Professor of Ancient Thought, University of Exeter, UK *Table of Contents1. Critics and defenders of MacIntyre’s approach, including MacIntyre himself, are well represented, as are the thinkers through which the value of Aristotle’s ethics are discussed, including Marx, J. L. Austin, and Charles Taylor. The result is a fascinating exploration of some of the major issues, both practical and theoretical, confronting moral and social philosophy today. -- Richard Kraut, Charles and Emma Morrison Professor in the Humanities, Northwestern University, USADrawing on a wide range of sources from different traditions, the collection makes for a thoroughly informative exploration of Aristotelian virtue ethics. Front and centre are themes from MacIntyre’s work, especially flourishing in the political community, which makes this collection of 14 essays an essential read for those interested in understanding MacIntyre’s programme. -- Joachim Aufderheide, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, King’s College London, UKThis volume is a welcome addition to the literature on Aristotelian political theories. It relates the MacIntyrean views to various debates inside and outside of Aristotelian theories. MacIntyre allows diversity, criticism and dialogue, unlike the misunderstood view of communitarianism. This book embodies the spirit of such a criticism-oriented MacIntyrean community. * The Classical Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction: The Aristotelian Tradition of Virtues, Andrius Bielskis (Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuania), Eleni Leontsini (University of Ioannina, Greece), and Kelvin Knight (London Metropolitan University, UK) Part I. Book SynopsisBringing together leading international and interdisciplinary scholars, this ground-breaking volume examines the theory and practice of philosophical health in contemporary contexts of care broadly understood, care for the self, care for the other, and care for the world. But what do we mean by philosophical health? Whilst this book does not seek to provide a normative definition, as it explores disparate perspectives and encourages pluralism in philosophical ways of life, one may envision philosophical health as a state of creative coherence between a person's or a group's way of thinking and their way of acting, such that the possibilities for a good life are increased, and the needs for flourishing satisfied. An idea central to philosophical health is the concept of possibility'. Without a sense of self-possibility and openness to the future, health loses meaning, and conversely, pathologies are defined by various kinds of impossibilities. As such, philosophical health reconsiders

Book SynopsisAristotle's Metaphysics is an extremely rich and important philosophical work, unique in that it is an inquiry devoted to discovering a doctrine, rather than a treatise that defends a doctrine. This title presents an introduction to the text, offering guidance on: philosophical context; key themes; reading the text; and, reception and influence.Trade Review‘Having already earned an enduring place as an expositor of Aristotle's work in his One and Many in Aristotle's Metaphysics, Edward C. Halper now proves that he is an expert teacher as well. Informed throughout by his unique awareness of the dialectical integrity of this indispensable text, Halper's pellucid guide provides the beginner with a firm foundation for further progress in philosophy.' -- William H.F. Altman, author of Plato the Teacher: The Crisis of the Republic.‘Aristotle's Metaphysics is not an easy book to read, but now it is possible for both graduate and undergraduate classes to study it first-hand. Ed Halper has done a beautiful job of mapping the whole terrain of Aristotle's complex dialectical argument from beginning to end. Thanks to this overview of the whole, one can now chart a well-informed course through a coherent sequence of its parts.' -- Joe Sachs, translator of the Metaphysics and other works of Aristotle.‘This clear and concise book is an invaluable guide to one of Aristotle's most important and profound works. The analysis that Halper offers allow those beginning to navigate the intricacies of Aristotle's Metaphysics to see the main lines of each argument and to make sense of the work as an integral whole.' -- Owen Goldin, Professor of Philosophy at Marquette University, USA. ‘This is an elegant introduction to the main lines of Aristotle's Metaphysics and at the same time an argument for the unity and coherence of the work. It distills decades of reflection on one of the most intricate texts in the Western philosophical tradition. Halper excels at expressing the subtleties of Aristotle's thought in plain English. The reader who is struggling to figure out what Aristotle is up to in the Metaphysics will find much help here.' -- Arthur Madigan S.J., Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, USATable of Contents1. Book SynopsisThis open access book looks at Olympiodorus (AD c. 500570), possibly the last non-Christian teacher of philosophy in Alexandria, who delivered 28 lectures as an introduction to Plato. This volume translates lectures 1028, following from the first nine lectures and a biography of the philosopher published in translation in a companion volume, Olympiodorus: Life of Plato and On Plato First Alcibiades 19 (Bloomsbury, 2014).For us, these lectures can serve as an accessible introduction to late Neoplatonism. Olympiodorus locates the First Alcibiades at the start of the curriculum on Plato, because it is about self-knowledge. His pupils are beginners, able to approach the hierarchy of philosophical virtues, like the aristocratic playboy Alcibiades. Alcibiades needs to know himself, at least as an individual with particular actions, before he can reach the virtues of mere civic interaction. As Olympiodorus addresses mainly Christian students, he tells them that the differTrade Review“[Michael Griffin] has taken on the thankless task of the translator with commendable enthusiasm, thoroughness and accuracy; the resulting volume is, like its predecessor, a labor of love … G.’s translation, based on the second printing of Westerink’s (1956) Greek text and supplemented with only a few emendations by G. himself or earlier editors such as Creuzer, is of the highest quality. It presents a readable and accurate rendering of Olympiodorus’ Greek, while taking pains to approximate the lively, colloquial tone of Platonic dialogue wherever the Alcibiades is quoted in the commentary. * International Journal of the Platonic Tradition *Table of ContentsConventions Textual Emendations Introduction Translator's Note Translation Notes Select Bibliography English-Greek Glossary Greek-English Index Index of Names Subject Index

Book SynopsisPhiloponus'' On Aristotle Categories 1-5 discusses the nature of universals, preserving the views of Philoponus'' teacher Ammonius, as well as presenting a Neoplatonist interpretation of Aristotle''s Categories. Philoponus treats universals as concepts in the human mind produced by abstracting a form or nature from the material individual in which it has its being. The work is important for its own philosophical discussion and for the insight it sheds on its sources. For considerable portions, On Aristotle Categories 1-5 resembles the wording of an earlier commentary which declares itself to be an anonymous record taken from the seminars of Ammonius. Unlike much of Philoponus'' later writing, this commentary does not disagree with either Aristotle or Ammonius, and suggests the possibility that Philoponus eiTable of ContentsConventions Textual Emendations Introduction Translator's Note Translation Notes Select Bibliography English-Greek Glossary Greek-English Index Index of Names Subject Index
