Taylor & Francis Ltd A Jungian Approach to Spontaneous Drawing
Book SynopsisIn A Jungian Approach to Spontaneous Drawing, Patricia Anne Elwood provides an accessible and thought-provoking introduction to exploring spontaneous images, focusing on the value of this tool for insight into the unconscious. Illustrated with drawings of clients throughout, the book poignantly demonstrates how one can connect and access the spheres within through drawing, and how this process can reveal the unexpected.Elwood begins by accessibly introducing key Jungian concepts and exploring Jung's belief in the power of spontaneity as an invaluable tool in one's journey to the soul. As well as illuminating spontaneity, an oft-forgotten aspect of Jung's psychology, she explores themes including structure and dynamics, symbols and archetypal patterns.A Jungian Approach to Spontaneous Drawing also examines common motifs including houses, trees and people, and presents extended studies of work with children and adults and how their drawings relate and reveaTrade Review"This is a much-needed book on Image, Symbol, Jung and Therapy. Elwood’s style is very unique in a positive and readable way. The book is paradoxical - it's well anchored in theory, substantial on facts and method and yet poetic and meditative at the same time. Her style pulls the reader in and the reader stays to reflect. I found it to be such a rich experience. This book is an essential resource for analysts, mental health practitioners and graduate students in psychotherapy and art therapy." - John Allan, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada; Jungian analyst, and author of Inscapes of the Child's World: Jungian Counselling in Schools and Clinics"Patricia Elwood’s book invites the reader into the breath-taking creative world of C.G. Jung. Not only does the author offer a comprehensive, very readable, precis of the principal tenets of Jung’s analytical psychology, but at the same time Elwood offers an in-depth appreciation of spontaneous artwork. As the unconscious reveals the wealth of its images, the author leads the reader forward to a deeper understanding of their own self. This fine, insightful book is truly an encounter with the Soul. It is a gift to all explorers of the psyche and spiritual seekers." - Susan Tiberghien, lecturer and author, Writing Towards Wholeness "Following in the tradition of C.G. Jung and Susan Bach, the author demonstrates and explains incredible revelations to be discovered through spontaneous drawing: truly A Window to the Soul! Simple images of trees, houses, human and animal figures are shown to reveal inner dynamics, helping us to better understand the nature of the psyche and its influence on our ways of being."- Dr Robert Hinshaw, PhD, C. Taylor & Francis Ltd C. G. Jung and the Alchemical Imagination
Book SynopsisWinner of the 2021 American Board & Academy of Psychoanalysis Annual Book Prize for Best Theoretical Book in Psychoanalysis!Stanton Marlan brings together writings which span the course of his career, examining Jungian psychology and the alchemical imagination as an opening to the mysteries of psyche and soul. Several chapters describe a telos that aims at the mysterious goal of the Philosophers' Stone, a move replete with classical and postmodern ideas catalysed by prompts from the unconscious: dreams, images, fantasies, and paradoxical conundrums. Psyche and matter are seen with regards to soul, light and darkness in terms of illumination, and order and chaos as linked in the image of chaosmos. Marlan explores the richness of the alchemical ideas of Carl Jung, James Hillman, and others and their value for a revisioning of psychology. In doing so, this volume challenges any tendency to literalism and essentialism, and contributes to an integratTrade ReviewStanton Marlan’s essays movingly mirror the steadily burning passion of the alchemists for their opus. With these critical ventures into alchemical psychology Marlan has forged an opus of his own that is more than an amalgam of other thinkers’ insights. It is a singular work of creative scholarship and imagination and is thus another link in the golden chain of engagement with the mysteries of the human psyche.Murray Stein, Ph.D., author of Jung’s Map of the SoulTo use an alchemical metaphor, in this collection of his writings, we find Stan Marlan having "taken another round in the container." That is, he works his material again and again, with it each time becoming more refined, sophisticated, and qualitatively transformed. The result is a series of deep insights and psychological wisdom, richly evolved and well worth the reader’s time. I highly recommend this intellectually clarifying and emotionally satisfying book!Pat Berry, Ph.D., Jungian AnalystOver the years my own understanding of Jung has been deepened by Stan Marlan’s own original and insightful essays on the pivotal place of alchemy in Jung’s psychology. What a joy now to have the fifteen essays gathered in this volume. For the reader the book itself becomes an alchemical vessel whose fire attests to the radical depths and reveals the expansive reach of Jung’s Alchemical Psychology beyond the narrow confines of what his psychology has become. Marlan’s scholarship and elegant writing display Jung’s alchemical imagination as a necessary and much needed recovery of the erotic coupling between psyche and nature, that dark desire of spirit to matter and for matter to be inspired. Read Marlan’s book and learn to trust and to love the brilliance of the soul’s dark light that illuminated the alchemists of old and beckons us to be with them today. Robert D. Book SynopsisWhat is dialectical thinking and why do we need it in psychology? How are moments of truth to be psychologically discerned and differentiated? How does the recognition of the historicity of archetypal and mythological materials relate to their interpretation? In a seminar held in the El Capitan Canyon near Santa Barbara, California, in June of 2004, the renowned Jungian analyst Wolfgang Giegerich, along with conversation partners, David L. Taylor & Francis Trauma and Beyond
Book SynopsisIn this seminal work on the clinical, archetypal and spiritual dimension of trauma, the author offers a compelling vision of the transformative potential of suffering and the dialectic of Dying and Becoming. Wirtz outlines a healing path from fragmentation to integration and illuminates the resilience of the human spirit in the face of severe trauma. Trauma and Beyond will be essential reading and a valuable resource for counsellors, therapists and Jungian analysts who are challenged in their practice with individual and collective traumata.Trade Review"Wirtz courageously and brilliantly undertakes the most truculent question: ‘wither the soul after soul-murder?’. She summarizes the literature in the field, the range of methodologies, and provides numerous illustrations and case studies which demonstrate a realistic, hopeful, sequential approach to trauma integrating fragmented splinters. She illustrates the narrow passage between the necessity of ego-death, abiding a most difficult in-between, and attending the birth of an enlarged, more capacious ego state. Trauma and Beyond is not only a key contribution to the field, but has the makings of a classic study of the resilience of the soul in the face of even the most devastating traumata." – James Hollis, PhD; Jungian analyst and author"In an extraordinary synthesis of the diverse facets of the psyche activated in trauma, Wirtz truly offers the reader a way ‘beyond’ suffering into wisdom. A lifetime of experience is woven into a revelatory tapestry of heart and soul. Reflecting an emerging paradigm in the 21st century, science and spirituality are brought into kindred relations through the author’s courageous explorations of trauma. Anyone touched by trauma will benefit deeply from an encounter with this book." – Joe Cambray, PhD; past-President, IAAP"In this insightful work, Wirtz asks us to take Jung’s Red Book as a map or template for working with loss and trauma. If you are looking for guidance in clinical work in trauma and recovery or for guidance in your own recovery, you will find a treasure trove of riches here." – Polly Young-Eisendrath, PhD; author, The Resilient Spirit and Subject to Change"This profoundly moving book is a major contribution to Jungian studies in this field. Wirtz has a remarkable ability to seamlessly synthesize the spiritual, archetypal, and clinical aspects of trauma. Her wise reflections on the transformative potentials of trauma, and the meaning of the suffering it produces, are an inspiration. Taylor & Francis The Practice of Psychotherapy
Book SynopsisThe Practice of Psychotherapy brings together Jung's essays on general questions of analytic therapy and dream analysis. It also contains his profoundly interesting parallel between the transference phenomena and alchemical processes. The transference is illustrated and interpreted by means of a set of symbolic pictures, and the bond between psychotherapist and patient is shown to be a function of the kinship libido. Taylor & Francis Alchemy and Psychotherapy
Book SynopsisAlchemical symbols are part of popular culture, most recently popularised in the Harry Potter books. Alchemy intrigued Carl Jung, the founder of analytical psychology. It inspired him as he wrote the Red Book' - the journal of his voyage of internal discovery. He devoted much of his life to it, using alchemical symbols as metaphors for unconscious processes. Alchemy and Psychotherapy explores the issue of alchemy in the consulting room and its application to social and political issues. This book argues against the dominant discourse in contemporary psychotherapy - scientific materialism - and for the discovery of spiritual meaning. Alchemy and Psychotherapy has four main sections:Alchemy and meaning' - looks at the history of alchemy, particularly the symbol of the coniunctio - sacred marriage - a metaphor for the therapeutic relationship. Now that the intellectual and cultural climate in the West demonstrates the shifting, relative and mutable nature of things like science, bodies, sexualities, health and illness, we are justified in asking, together with these authors: Why does anyone need to be afraid of alchemy?" - Andrew Samuels, Professor of Analytical Psychology, University of EssexTable of ContentsBeebe, Foreword. Taylor & Francis Ltd Remembering Dionysus
Book SynopsisDionysus, god of dismemberment and sponsor of the lost or abandoned feminine, originates both Jungian psychology and literature in Remembering Dionysus. Characterized by spontaneity, fluid boundaries, sexuality, embodiment, wild nature, ecstasy and chaos, Dionysus is invoked in the writing of C. G. Jung and James Hillman as the dual necessity to adopt and dismiss literature for their archetypal vision of the psyche or soul. Susan Rowland describes an emerging paradigm for the twenty-first century enacting the myth of a god torn apart to be re-membered, and remembered as reborn in a great renewal of life. Rowland demonstrates how persons, forms of knowing and even eras that dismiss Dionysus are torn apart, and explores how Jung was Dionysian in providing his most dismembered text, The Red Book. Remembering Dionysus pursues the rough god into the Sublime in the destruction of meaning in Jung and Jacques Lacan, to a re-membering of sublime feminine crTrade ReviewPerhaps it is a staple of a living organic mythology that periodically it be remembered anew, complete with all the divinities that inhabit and inhibit it as the myth continues to flourish. Susan Rowland’s fine lyrical study returns to recalibrate the value of two related schools of a psychology of soul by opening them to a conversation with the mytho-poetic imagination. Her own mythodology is framed by the god Dionysus, both a force and a presence who dismembers, remembers and in so doing engenders new ways of imagining what we thought we knew. Princeton University Press The Question of Psychological Types
Book SynopsisIn 1915, C G Jung and his psychiatrist colleague, Hans Schmid-Guisan, began a correspondence through which they hoped to understand and codify fundamental individual differences of attention and consciousness. This volume provides an historical grounding for those who work with, or are interested in, Jungian psychology and psychological typology.Trade Review"The English text is a pleasure to read, with plenty of clarifying notes. Readers will enjoy the informality of the exchange, its intellectual depth, and the humanity of Jung and Schmid-Guisan. This important addition to the history of modern psychology will engage and inform interested nonspecialists."--E. James Lieberman, Library Journal "The Question of Psychological Types is a welcome addition to anyone who would seek to understand the framework of psychological types better in its philosophical and historical context. The publishers have done a good job of putting the book into a good, clean format and have equipped the text with a generous, even lavish, amount of footnotes. Readers who will want to know more about the practical application of typology and the types will not find much to interest them here, but to readers who want to be acquainted with the historical process that spawned Psychological Types, this volume is quite simply a mandatory read."--Celebrity Types "Beebe and Falzeder provide a fascinating, scientifically important look into the development of Jung's seminal work on psychological types. The organization of this edition in the form of a creative descent from editor's introduction to commentaries to Aurélia itself makes it wonderfully useful to a reader wishing to fathom Nerval's enigmatic text."—Michael Dolzani, coeditor of the Unpublished Notebooks of Northrop Frye"On Psychological and Visionary Art brings to publication a significant lecture by Jung, and provides readers with the context to understand Jung's argument and its importance. The lecture is rich in cultural reference and allusion. Jung himself described the memoir under discussion as being of extraordinary magnitude, and the interpretation he offers at this late stage in his intellectual development represents his mature system at work."—Paul Bishop, author of Analytical Psychology and German Classical Aesthetics"Scholars of Jung's thought will be grateful to have Jung's lecture available, to see the fascinating parallels between Nerval's experiences and those Jung documents in The Red Book, and to study the distinctions between psychological and visionary modes as well as Jung's further reflections on art. University Press of America Spirit Tree Origins of Cosmology in Shinto Ritual
Book SynopsisDespite what some scholarship has suggested, Shintô does exhibit a unifying cognitive integrity. Spirit Tree offers a unique social psychological interpretation of Shintô ritual at the Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine in Fukuoka, Japan and situates the cosmological organization of this practice within the larger context of ritual in East Asia. Employing a comparative approach, this study blends two theoretical orientations: cultural anthropology and Jungian psychology. Hakozaki''s rituals are a combination of a Yayoi period female medium tradition with a complex set of Chinese Yin-Yang Five Phase principles. Both systems are based on the feminine archetype, a fundamental conceptual foundation of Shintô ritual practice, which cognitively links woman and the earth. While the female shaman tradition is female-affirming in outlook, the later Chinese system is much less so. This monograph is a new acknowledgement of the conceptual continuity of Shintô ritual as an outgrowth of social cognition.Table of ContentsChapter 1 List of Photos and Figures Chapter 2 Preface Part 3 I. Book SynopsisExplores the role of dreams in spiritual work.In Dreaming about the Divine, Bonnelle Lewis Strickling argues that people dream about the divine in forms that fit their current emotional and spiritual condition. Using Jungian psychology and the philosophy of Karl Jaspers, Strickling contends that dreams about the divine occur in the context of existential issues; psychic and emotional crises which open us to the experience of the divine. She concludes that working with dreams of the divine can be spiritually, psychically, and emotionally helpful both to people who are engaged in a spiritual search and also to people who are already committed to a spiritual tradition.

Book SynopsisWhat do we do with our fantasies? Are there right and wrong ways to imagine, feel, think, or desire? Do we have our fantasies, or do they have us? In The Ethical Imagination: Exploring Fantasy and Desire in Analytical Psychology, Sean Fitzpatrick explores how our obligation to the Other extends to our most intimate spaces.Informed by Jungian psychology and the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, Fitzpatrick imagines an ethical approach that can negotiate the delicate and porous boundary between inner and outer, personal and collective fantasy. Combining both theory and practice, the book examines theorists of the imagination, such as Plato, Coleridge, Sartre, and Richard Kearney, explores stories from contemporary culture, such as Jimmy Carter and New York's Cannibal Cop, and includes encounters in the consulting room. The Ethical Imagination explores how these questions have been asked in different ways across culture and history, and Fitzpatrick examines thTrade Review"If there is one subject the modern and now postmodern world does not, and perhaps cannot, understand, it is the imagination. We have exiled this weird aspect of consciousness into the dry flatland of the imaginary and the meaningless. We also, frankly, fear it, and for some very reasonable reasons. So when should we trust it? What do we do with it? And how does it relate to our social norms and ethical concerns? Does it? Should it? Here is a most practical guidebook for our own imaginal lives, a kind of how-to manual that never dumbs down and always lifts up. The reader senses that she or he is walking through a dangerous but fascinating forest behind a trusted guide. We never quite get out of the forest, but we learn not to be so afraid of the teaming darkness that is all around us, that is in us, and that is us." - Jeffrey J. Kripal, J. In his rich exploration of the ethical imagination, Fitzpatrick presents eight guiding principles for understanding the 'ethical gray zone' of the human psyche, shedding vital light on the sometimes harrowing path of individuation." - Carolyn Bates, PhD, Jungian analyst and co-author of Sex in the Therapy Hour: A Case of Professional Incest"This beautiful book perfectly marries contemporary philosophy, psychological theories, and theological insights to help us talk about the imagination in ethical ways. The result is a work that explains and leads us through the complexities of ethics and one you will go back to over and over for reference. Sean paves a clear path to create an ethical imagination for all who seek to navigate this digital age fully and successfully. It is a unique combination of research, storytelling, and a provocative call to action." - Reverend Dr Wismick Jean-Charles, former Vice-President of Academic Affairs of the University Notre-Dame of Haiti and current Vicar General of the Montfort Missionaries"While we, and the world, hold ourselves accountable for our behaviors, are we also accountable for the far more autonomous insurgencies of the imagination? Should we feel 'guilty' for what transpires in dreams, phantasies, projections, or do they open an aperture into a developmental dialogue with our fuller humanity? Sean Fitzpatrick undertakes a probing investigation of these questions and presents the reader with a most thoughtful set of lenses and concrete recommendations through which to see these dilemmas, engage them, and feel less separated from the rich complexity of our souls." - James Hollis, Ph.D., Jungian analyst and authorTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; Preface; Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Imagining the Imagination; Chapter 3: What Do We Make of Fantasy?; Chapter 4: Imagining Ethics; Chapter 5: Eating the Liver, Killing the tortoise: The Ethical and the Imaginal; Chapter 6: A Dream of the Desiring Imagination; Chapter 7: The Law of the (Imaginal) Land; Chapter 8: Conclusions; References; Index

Jason Aronson, Inc. Empathic Attunement
Book SynopsisEmpathic Attunement captures the essence of Kohut''s contributions to self psychology and the mental health field. Straightforward, accurate, and practical, the authors introduce student and experienced clinician alike to the synthesis of Kohut''s major concepts and their clinical applications. The authors highlight Kohut''s emphasis on the empathic mode of data gathering from within the patient''s experiences. Kohut considers empathythe capacity to think and feel oneself into the inner life of another personto be the major tool of therapy.Trade ReviewEmpathic Attunement carefully leads the reader from the earliest of Kohut's observations through the newly developing theory and into detailed case reports. . . . At the same time, the thoughts of the treating clinician provide a running commentary that is invaluable in demonstrating the constant and fertile interplay between theory and practice, or, in Kohutian terms, between understanding and explaining. In an admirably self-revealing manner that does not hide countertransferences, the authors invite the reader to learn by empathic participation. This is a book that will appeal to beginners and to experienced practitioners alike. It can be recommended to all. -- Ernst Wolf, M.D., Chicago Institute for PsychoanalysisThe authors take beginners by the hand and walk them through the details of the contributions of Heinz Kohut in a simple, direct, masterly, and easy-to-follow fashion. They have digested Kohut's work, made it their own, and through their clinical examples, sensitively bring their readers step by step inside their clinical experiences. They share this in an open, sound, and pedagogically appealing fashion. They are as empathic with their readers as they are with their patients—a most felicitous combination. -- Dr. Paul Ornstein, University of Cincinnati, co-director of the International Center for the Study of Psychoanalytic Self PsychologyTable of ContentsPart 1 Part I: Understanding from the Vantage Point of the Patient's Experience Chapter 2 Kohut the Man Chapter 3 Empathy—Its Definition and Functions Chapter 4 The Selfobject Concept and Selfobject Transference Chapter 5 Stages in the Development of the Self Part 6 Part II: Treatment in Self Psychology Chapter 7 Transmuting Internalization Chapter 8 Mental Health and Illness Chapter 9 The Place of Drives in Self Psychology Chapter 10 Defense and Resistance Chapter 11 Dreams Chapter 12 The Curative Process Part 13 Part III: Clinical Applications of Self Psychology Chapter 14 Kohut's Two Analyses of Mr. Z.
