Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland
Book SynopsisChinese wallpaper has been an important element of western interior decoration for three hundred years. As trade between Europe and China flourished in the seventeenth century, Europeans developed a strong taste for Chinese art and design. The stunningly beautiful wall coverings now known as `Chinese wallpaper’ were developed by Chinese painting workshops in response to western demand. In spite of their spectacular beauty, Chinese wallpapers have not been studied in any depth until relatively recently. This book provides an overview of some of the most significant Chinese wallpapers surviving in the British Isles. Sumptuously illustrated, it shows how these wallpapers became a staple ingredient of high-end interiors while always retaining a touch of the exotic.Trade ReviewOffers dizzying temptations. After even a cursory flick, it is impossible not to feel one’s curiosity piqued by surviving descriptions, for example, of the Countess of Castlemaine’s rooms at Wantead House, "finely adorned with China paper, the Figures of Men, Women, Birds, Flowers, the Liveliest I ever saw.” -- Matthew Dennison * The World of Interiors *You would be forgiven for turning to Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland for the pictures alone. Here are tantalising glimpses of private chambers, hung with geometric arrangements of Chinese prints in the mid-18th century. Luxuriate only in the images, though, and you stand to miss de Bruijn’s formidable detective work, charting the complex cross-pollination of influences between Western Europe and China. -- Hettie Judah * Art Quarterly *This is the first volume in a welcome cooperation between The National Trust and Philip Wilson Publishers which, it is planned, will lead to a wider exposure to the public of some of the valuable and unique furnishings and valuables within the properties held by the NT. As usual, Philip Wilson Publishers have excelled with their production of this book on the wallpapers within National Trust properties. Up until now, there was just a slim National Trust brochure on this neglected subject. Now we have a proper book in which the illustration is matched by the scholarship. -- Paul Harris * Chinese Art Blog *Chinese wallpaper has been an important element of western interior decoration for three hundred years. As trade between Europe and China flourished in the seventeenth century, Eurpeans developed a strong taste for Chinese art and design. The stunningly beautiful wall coverings now known as Chinese wallpaper were developed by Chinese painting workshops in response to western demand. Despite their spectacular beauty, Chinese wallpapers have not been studied by European scholars in any depth until relatively recently. Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland, by Emile de Bruijn, changes that. It provides an overview of some of the most significant surviving Chinese wallpapers in private and public ownership in the British Isles. Sumptuously illustrated, it shows how these wallpapers be-came a staple ingredient of high-end interiors. * Asian Books Blog *De Bruijn’s book is highly readable, with plenty of appropriately sized, full-page colour illustrations of these exquisite wallpapers, which serve to extend the appeal of the book beyond the academic and professional to a much wider readership. * Institute of Historic Building Conservation *Table of ContentsIntroduction: A Global Product 1. Radius Books Helen Frankenthaler: Late Works, 1988–2009
Book SynopsisLuminous late works on paper from the great Color Field pioneer Exploring works from the later period of Helen Frankenthaler’s life, Late Works, 1988–2009 features approximately 50 plates and archival images dating from 1988 to 2009. Originally inspired by the exhibition curated by Douglas Dreishpoon (Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Catalogue Raisonné and Chief Curator Emeritus of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery), the book expands upon the original exhibition to include a wide range of important pieces from this prolific period in the artist's career. Through her invention of the soak-stain technique, Frankenthaler expanded the possibilities of abstract painting while referencing figuration and landscape in unique ways. In her later years, her practice continued to evolve through her use of diverse mediums and processes, as she shifted from painting canvas on the floor to using larger sheets of paper that were laid out on the floor or on tabletops for easier accessibility. The continuity between the late work and what came before is striking. Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) has long been recognized as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. She was eminent among the second generation of postwar American abstract painters and is widely credited for playing a pivotal role in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting with her invention of the soak-stain technique, which involved pouring thinned paint directly onto unprimed canvas. The juxtaposition of amorphous fields of color and gestural brushstrokes produces a vigorous rhythm of activity that seems to convey both the expanse of landscape and the surface texture of mark-making.

Edition Peters Dolly Op. 56 for Piano Duet
Book SynopsisFauré would have been delighted to know that this edition corrects the misguided feline associations in the titles for the second and fourth of these pieces. ''Mi-a-ou'' should always have been known as ''Messieu Auol'' (reflecting an infant pronunciation of the eponymous Dolly''s older brother, Raoul), and ''Kitty-Valse'' should have been ''Ketty-Valse'', inspired ironically not by a cat but by the family dog! For such a cornerstone of the repertoire, Roy Howat - who personally knew Dolly Bardac, the suite''s dedicatee - finds a surprisingly high number of source discrepancies to evaluate in the comprehensive critical commentary, including an indication that Fauré conceived the famous opening ''Berceuse'' at a more flowing tempo than has become habitual over the decades. Based on his intimate knowledge of Fauré, he also urges the performers to keep rubato to a minimum, and keep the pedalling light.Fauré''s Dolly suite honours Hélène Bardac (1892-1985), second child of Fauré''s clos

Book SynopsisFirst advertised as a mind-stretching experience, Nicolas Roeg's 1976 The Man Who Fell to Earth stunned the cinema world. A tour-de-force of science fiction as art form, the movie brought not only hallucinatory visuals and a haunting exploration of contemporary alienation, but also glam-rock legend David Bowie in his lead role debut as paranoid alien Newton. Based on Walter Tevis's 1963 sci-fi fable of the same title, The Man Who Fell to Earth follows alien Newton from his arrival on earth in search of water; his transition to wealthy entrepreneur, leveraging the advanced technologies of his native planet; his sexual awakening with the young Mary-Lou; and then the discovery of his alien identity, his imprisonment, abandonment, and descent into alcoholism. Throughout, Roeg coaxed a beguiling performance from his cast, presenting not only Bowie in ethereal space-traveler glory, but also pitch-perfect sup

Taschen GmbH HR Giger. 40th Ed.
Book SynopsisSwiss artist HR Giger (1940–2014) is most famous for his creation of the space monster in Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror sci-fi film Alien, which earned him an Oscar. Yet this was just one of the most popular expressions of Giger’s biomechanical arsenal of creatures, which consistently merged hybrids of human and machine into images of haunting power and dark psychedelia. The visions drew on demons of the past, as well as evoking mythologies for the future. Above all, they gave expression to the collective fears and fantasies of his age: fear of the atom, of pollution and wasted resources, and of a future in which our bodies depend on machines for survival. Following the SUMO-sized monograph which was begun shortly before the artist's unexpected death, this affordable anniversay edition pays homage to Giger’s unique vision. The book shows the complete story of Giger’s life and art, his sculptures, film design, and iconic album covers as well as the heritage he left us in his own artist’s museum and self-designed bar in the Swiss Alps. In an in-depth essay, Giger scholar Andreas J. Hirsch plunges into the themes of the artist’s oeuvre while an extensive biography draws on contemporary quotes and Giger’s own statements.Trade Review“At its essence, Giger’s art digs down into our psyches and touches our very deepest primal instincts and fears. His art stands in a category of its own. The proof of this lies in the intensity of his work and imagination, which I can only compare to Hieronymus Bosch and Francis Bacon in their powers to provoke and disturb.” * Ridley Scott *“A magnificent volume, a lovingly designed homage that does justice to the significance of this artist... One thing is certain: most celebrated contemporary artists quickly fall back into obscurity, but HR Giger will remain.” * Weltwoche *“A disturbingly beautiful tribute to H.R. Giger’s nightmarish work.” * Wired.com *

Taschen GmbH Ice Cold. A Hip-Hop Jewelry History
Book SynopsisWhether it's diamond-encrusted grills, oversized “truck” style chains, bust-down Rolex and Patek Philippe watches or a Tiffany necklace, jewelry is a cornerstone of hip-hop culture. Glittering, blinged-out jewels are the shining statement of a collective identity: unapologetic, charismatic, and street savvy. Spanning the history of hip-hop jewelry, from the 1980s to today, Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History is a stunning compilation of storytelling and visuals. Hundreds of extraordinary images of every major hip-hop artist on record celebrate how “Ice” has become a proclamation of identity and self-expression. Starting with Run-DMC’s gold Adidas pendants and Eric B. & Rakim’s ostentatious dookie rope chains and Mercedes medallions, the jewelry then transforms from street style into a booming design culture. The hip-hop tradition of “show up and show out” reaches new heights with artists like Pharrell Williams, Jay-Z, Gucci Mane, and Cardi B, whose over-the-top pieces integrate unique pop culture references, unconventional materials, and enduring collaborations with artists like Takashi Murakami. Author Vikki Tobak reveals – in great detail – the work of pioneering jewelers such as Tito Caicedo of Manny’s, Eddie Plein, and Jacob the Jeweler as well as newer artisans such as Avianne & Co., Ben Baller/IF & Co., Greg Yuna, Johnny Dang, Eliantte, and many more. Ice Cold is a treasure trove of dazzling, inspirational style, featuring the work of leading photographers, including Wolfgang Tillmans, Janette Beckman, Jamel Shabazz, Timothy White, Gillian Laub, David LaChapelle, Danny Clinch, Chris Buck, Mike Miller, Phil Knott, Raven B. Varona, Al Pereira, Albert Watson and many more. A foreword by hip-hop superstar Slick Rick and essays by A$AP Ferg, LL COOL J, Kevin “Coach K’ Lee and Pierre “P” Thomas of Quality Control Music take us on personal journeys into their jewelry universe. Ice Cold goes beyond the ostentatious bling to reveal a transformative story that is loud and proud.Trade Review“It’s sort of like the ultimate visual encyclopedia for understanding how Hip-Hop has redefined the world of Jewelry over the past 40 years. That, at least, is what one might read on the band of a literally stunning photo album… In Ice Cold, Tobak sets the layman up against the truly museum-like work of pioneering jewelers.” * Papel, El Mundo *“Vikki Tobak’s Ice Cold. A Hip-Hop Jewelry History is a lavish catalog of ostentation, documenting a decades-long affair between rap stars and the diamond-encrusted ornamentation that elevates them to around-the-way superheroes.” * The New York Times *“Packed with photos and essays about four decades of bling culture, with looks from artists ranging from OGs like Run DMC and the Notorious B.I.G. to contemporary figures like Cardi B and the Migos, the book is a celebration of personal style and its role in hip hop.” * TIME *“Jewelry has always been part of hip-hop culture and, as a result, has made celebrities of the jewelers themselves. Ice Cold offers a history of jewelry in hip-hop — starting in the 1980s with Run DMC’s Adidas pendants and working its way to recent years, when artists like Cardi B and Gucci Mane turned their ice into an art form. It also spotlights jewelers, offering an inside look at the work of industry vets like Jacob the Jeweler along with newcomers like Avianne & Co. and Ben Baller.” * New York magazine *“Over-the-top is an understatement when it comes to the bling images captured by top photographers of the past 40 years in this coffee-table stunner that documents how hip-hop transformed the jewelry industry.” * The Globe and Mail *“A photographic review of how hip hop helped redefine luxury with its over-the-top culture of bling.” * Associated Press *“Ice Cold illustrates the hip-hop arms race to procure and produce increasingly elaborate, individualized showpieces.” * The Los Angeles Times *“While serving as a compendium of opulence and excess, Ice Cold emphatically ties bling’s symbolism to lived realities of social marginalization.” * The Los Angeles Times *“The biography of bling.” * CNN.com *“[Ice Cold] traces the arc of hip-hop jewelry from the 1980s to today. Since its inception, hip-hop has shown the world how jewelry could become a living document, a testament to individual identity and the social order.” * The New York Times *“Decades of hip-hop decadence.” * Rolling Stone *“…a homage to all things glittering and gold… Ice Cold. A Hip-Hop Jewelry History document[s] that rich, illustrious relationship between style and music.” * Vice.com *“Hip-hop, jewelry and identity… Ice Cold explores the enduring relationship between two creative fields.” * Wallpaper *“Perhaps even more than clothes or shoes, bling has been a defining feature of hip-hop’s look from its earliest days. [Ice Cold] is finally giving the relationship between rap and rocks the deep dive it deserves, with paeans from some of the industry’s biggest jewelry-loving artists.” * Robb Report *“My jewels are my superhero suit.” * Ricky Walters aka Slick Rick *“Ice Cold explores the storied connection between jewelry and rap. Through an archive of amazing imagery and incredible tales, [the book] traces decades of how rappers crafted their personal flair through the art of bling.” * BuzzFeed News *“Hip-hop has forever changed how we look at jewelry. Now, the genre’s diamond-studded history is the subject of a new book.” * VOGUE *“It’s taken decades for the mainstream to embrace the bold aesthetic of hip-hop jewelry and the shift it has caused within the wider industry – a subject fully explored in TASCHEN’s Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History.” * VOGUE *“A 40-year deep dive into one of the genre’s greatest subcultures.” * Hypebeast.com *
