  • 30 Degrees South Publishers The rebel in me: A ZANLA guerrilla commander in

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is the true story of a young guerrilla commander brought up in a Christian family in Rhodesia, a former colony of Britain. Exposed to the excesses of a colonial regime where race and racism determined one's status in society, and influenced by the radical anti-racial views of his parents and later of fellow students and workmates, his character began to change. A chance encounter with a captured guerrilla fighter helped complete the metamorphic transformation of his rebel character, and was catalytic to his decision to cross into Mozambique to join the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA), the military wing of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) led by Robert Mugabe, which was waging a protracted revolutionary armed struggle to liberate Zimbabwe. Known by his nom de guerre, Dragon Patiripakashata, he led several armed guerrilla incursions into Rhodesia, before being promoted to the General staff and appointed an instructor. For the final eighteen months of the war, until 1980, he served as ZANU's Chief representative to socialist Ethiopia. Mutambara invites the reader to view the Rhodesian bush war through the eyes of a guerrilla commander, experience the trials and tribulations of a freedom fighter, the satisfaction of working among the masses, and the joyous celebration of achieving freedom and independence. He outlines the psyche of those who engage in revolutionary armed struggle and why, even when exposed to extreme hardship and continual assault by a superior military adversary, they remain committed to their cause. This book also takes a different view of Mugabe, reviled by most Western governments and yet who remains immensely popular among his people.

Book SynopsisWho is the Christ? What is the ‘Sun-spirit’? How should we understand the person of Jesus in relation to the Cosmic Christ, or even to the Holy Trinity? --- In a majestic overview of Rudolf Steiner’s extensive references to Christ and Jesus, originally dispersed throughout his many writings and lectures, Oskar Kürten creates a mutually reconcilable and coherent text. We are invited to accompany the author as he attempts to comprehend the unimaginably vast enigma of Christ’s appearance on Earth. The results of his work can sometimes be overwhelming, but as Kürten points out: ‘humanity is always advancing in its intellectual and spiritual culture, and each step poses higher demands on our capacity to understand’. --- In a volume comprising three previously-untranslated booklets, composed originally as study material for people conversant with the fundamentals of anthroposophy, Mystery of the Christ gives numerous pointers to great mysteries, inviting readers to penetrate ever more deeply into the inexhaustible subject-matter. As Kürten states, this approach enables us ‘again and again to find surprisingly new insights into the mysterious interconnections in which Christ’s entry into earth-existence and the Mystery of Golgotha are placed’.Table of ContentsForeword by Paul King – Part One: CHRIST THE SUN SPIRIT IN THE WORK OF RUDOLF STEINER – Introduction – 1. Book SynopsisSunday is market day. We are looking for pumpkin, apples, eggs, and bread. What else will we find? Where did it come from? And what will we make with it? Learn all about produce in this delightful child’s tour of a food market, full of fun facts, delicious new discoveries, and charming characters. A loving ode to the people who bring food to our table and connection to our community, from acclaimed artist Alice Oehr.Trade Review‘Alice Oehr’s beautifully illustrated picture book, Off to the Market, explores a trip to a food market, teaching children about the produce, what can be made with it, as well as the journey to our tables … introduces fun facts and new discoveries.’ * City Kids *‘Off to the Market creates an approachable environment for children to learn just what to do at a market. This is also an excellent resource for learning about different types of fruits and vegetables without an overly moral approach to eating ‘good’ or ‘healthy’ food. Instead, the book favours information about flavours, colours, textures and growing conditions: ‘sage has a strong flavour that goes well with rich ingredients like pumpkin and butter’. With Oehr’s bright illustrations of wholefoods and her depiction of a multicultural community, Off to the Market is one of my favourite children’s picture books of the year.’ -- Clare Millar * Readings *‘Off to the Market presents wholesome, natural produce in a positive light and will stimulate children’s play as well as encourage them to eat experimentally and well.’ -- Joy Lawn * Books+Publishing *‘This beautiful nonfiction book is a feast of colour, introducing readers to the market experience and homegrown produce in a fun and interesting way.’ * Deescribe writing *‘With luscious illustrations, Oehr helps children explore farmers’ markets and the allure of fresh produce and the community of the market. Oehr includes an approachable array of information about fruits and vegetables, such as flavour pairings, textures and growing conditions.’ * The Big Issue *‘Illustrations are super vibrant with pop-out colours that radiate on the surfaces of the vegetables, fruit, and other food products that we’re purchasing … I loved the story, the characters we meet in the market, and the vibrant illustrations … I would add this to Let Me Fix You a Plate by Elizabeth Lilly, On the Farm, At the Market by G. Book SynopsisAlong with Factory, Mute, and Creation, Some Bizzare was the vanguard of outsider music in the 1980s. The label s debut release reads like a who s who of electronic music, featuring early tracks from Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Blancmange, and The The, while over the next decade its roster would include artists such as Marc Almond, Cabaret Voltaire, Einsturzende Neubauten, Foetus, Swans, Coil, and Psychic TV. For a time, Some Bizzare was the most exciting independent record label in the world, but the music is only half of the story. Self-styled label boss Stevo Pearce s unconventional dealings with the industry are legendary. Sometimes they were playful (sending teddy bears to meetings in his place), other times less so (he and Marc Almond destroyed offices at Phonogram and terrorised staff). Despite this, he was a force to be reckoned with. His preternatural ability to spot talent meant his label was responsible for releasing some of the decade s most forward-thinking, transgressive, and influential music. The Some Bizzare story spans the globe: from ecstasy parties in early 80s New York to video shoots in the Peruvian jungle, from events in disused tube stations to seedy sex shows in Soho. There were million-selling singles, run-ins with the Vice Squad, destruction at the ICA, death threats, meltdowns, and, of course, sex dwarves. For a time, Stevo had the music industry in the palm of his hands, only for it all to slip through his fingers. But he and Some Bizzare left a legacy of incredible music that still has an influence and impact today.

  • Johnny Thunders: In Cold Blood: The Official

Outline Press Ltd Johnny Thunders: In Cold Blood: The Official

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisJohnny Thunders: In Cold Blood is the definitive portrait of the condemned man of rock n roll, from the baptism of fire and tragedy that was the New York Dolls, through the junkie punk years of the Heartbreakers, to his sudden and mysterious death in 1991. It is an unflinching account of a unique guitarist whose drug problems often overshadowed his considerable style and talent, but whose unquestionable influence on glam, punk, and more still resonates today. Nina Antonia discovered Johnny Thunders and the New York Dolls as a teenager and spent her formative years as a dedicated fan before starting work on this book in her twenties. Then, when Johnny and his manager read her early drafts, they decided she should make it an authorised biography and granted her unique access to Johnny s life. As such, it begins by painting a historical portrait of Thunders and his early life and work before shifting into the present tense as Nina vividly describes her own experiences with the real-life Johnny and his associates. First published in 1987, Johnny Thunders: In Cold Blood has been kept alive over the years by an audience that isn t always catered for. While the New York Dolls are now rightly acknowledged as having been as pivotal as the Velvet Underground, and you might catch the odd fashionista sporting a Dolls T-shirt, Johnny s dark flame burns for those who have known adversity. He is the voice of the disenfranchised; he is every gifted son or daughter who went off the rails. Like Jesse James or James Dean, he couldn t come in from the badlands of rock n roll; he wouldn t appease or kowtow to the establishment. This new edition adds a new closing chapter, bringing Thunders legacy up to date, new photographs, and a foreword by Mike Scott of The Waterboys.

Book SynopsisWhen I Were a Lad… looks at the glorious-yet-risky childhoods of yesteryear before the Health and Safety officers told us we couldn’t do everything because it was too dangerous. The sleeper hit of Christmas 2009 – more than 4,000 copies sold through Bookscan. A book to send shivers down the spine of any parent who has spent years protecting their children from the slightest bump and bash. A glorious romp though some of the most reckless photos from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s, tagged with side-splitting captions. Ah, the past. A time when children could play in the snow without a helmet, crampons and a risk assessment report. When footballs were made from rhino hide and cricket was played with one pad, if you were lucky. When I Were a Lad… looks at the glorious-yet-risky childhoods of yesteryear before the Health and Safety officers told us we couldn’t do everything because it was too dangerous. It reflects on a time when children were allowed in with the animals at London Zoo; a time before the car seatbelt was invented (let alone used); a time when you were allowed to dress up endangered species in goalkeeping kit and take penalties against them. The authors have trawled through the major historic archives to find some glorious photo opportunities where the safety angle of the participants was the last thing anyone thought of. Children perch happily on lethal, limb-mangling machinery, stand all-smiles on live crocodiles, feed brown bears with their hands and get scooped from the street by passing tram conductors! These truly were the days that Health and Safety forgot, back when I were a lad…

Book Synopsis"English Canoe Classics" is an illustrated guide to some of the finest tours of northern England's waterways, from the North Tyne in Northumbria to the Shropshire Union Canal in the West Midlands. Scenic lakes, placid canals and broad rivers, as they can only be seen from a canoe or kayak. Eddie and 'Wilf' have chosen the best inland touring routes. They are described in great detail and illustrated with numerous colour photos and maps. The selected routes are suitable for open canoes, sit-on-tops and touring kayaks. Many of them can be tackled as a single voyage or a series of day trips, with campsites en route. The journeys are all accessible but highly varied, taking place on lakes, sheltered coastline, rivers and canals. A wonderful book for planning voyages and inspiring dreams, or sharing your experiences with others. Eddie Palmer bought his first kayak over 50 years ago. It was a wood and canvas one in which he set out to paddle rivers in his part of middle England and Wales. Since then, he has kayaked and canoed extensively in the UK, Ireland, western and eastern Europe, the USA and Canada and southern Africa. His passion over the past few years has been for long-distance canoe-camping. After a competitive career in slalom and whitewater racing, he still paddles whitewater. Eddie is a Board Director of the SCA and is the co-author of Scottish Canoe Touring, author of Scottish Canoe Classics and co-author of Irish Canoe Classics (all published by Pesda Press). Nigel Wilford has been involved with canoeing for most of his adult life, paddling throughout the UK, mainland Europe, Canada, USA and New Zealand. Born in northwest Leicestershire, his first canoe experience was on the gentle River Soar. Not long after, he moved to Yorkshire to attend university. The enjoyment he found while paddling the rivers of the northeast firmly established canoeing as his activity of choice. In 1991 he joined the British Canoe Union's coaching service, helping others to improve their canoeing or to become better coaches. Nigel has held various roles within the BCU including Local Coaching Organiser and English Whitewater Safety Coordinator. He is a BCU Level 5 Coach and member of Team Pyranha.

The author, Mark Rainsley, has divided the river into 15 sections, which are described in detail with distances, grades, access points and campsites. These sections can be paddled as single day trips, or combined into multi-day adventures, and there are suggested itineraries for both white water and touring expeditions that range from 3 to 5 days. To help you plan your journey there is advice on equipment, safety and access, as well as information on wildlife, culture and landscape.

Book SynopsisThe first five Kestrel Railway Books volumes by David Larkin looked at the revenue-earning wagon fleet operated by British Railways and its successor, British Rail. These were followed by a series of three books looking at the specially-designed wagons that were used for track maintenance, and then three volumes covering the parcels and passenger-rated stock. This is the first of a series covering the ex-private owner fleet. When BR was created, it was intended that it should own all railway rolling stock, but legal action by some of the larger wagon-owning companies delayed things until 1951. Non-Pool wagons were defined as privately-owned wagons allowed to run over railways owned or operated by the British Transport Commission. This series sets out the types of wagon eligible to be classified as Non-Pool and lists them individually with details of numbers carried, capacity and registration details where known. Volume 1 covers owners with initials A to H, and Volume 2 (expected to be published in October 2016) deals with the remaining owners alphabetically.

Book SynopsisThis book is about time and its powerful influence on our personal and collective daily life. It presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date overview of contemporary knowledge on temporal psychology inspired by Zimbardo's work on Time Perspective (TP). With contributions from renowned and promising researchers from all over the globe, and at the interface of social, personality, cognitive and clinical psychology, the handbook captures the breadth and depth of the field of psychological time. Time perspective, as the way people construe the past, the present and the future, is conceived and presented not only as one of the most influential dimensions in our psychological life leading to self-impairing behaviors, but also as a facet of our person that can be de-biased and supportive for well-being and happiness. Written in honor of Philip G. Zimbardo on his 80th birthday and in acknowledgement of his leading role in the field, the book contains illustrations of the countless studies and applications that his theory has stimulated, and captures the theoretical, methodological and practical pathways he opened by his prolific research. Trade Review“Time Perspective Theory; Review, Research and Application: Essays in Honor of Philip G. Zimbardo is an edited book focused on the construct of time perspective. … The editors achieved their goal of creating a compendium of current research on TP and this book would be ideal for use by psychologists or psychology students interested in learning more about the construct. … The work contained in this book will likely spur more research into the psychological study of TP … .” (Erin D. • Creative Supervision: The Use of Expressive Arts

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Creative Supervision: The Use of Expressive Arts

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSupervision is growing in importance in all professions as a means of focusing on the personal and vocational skills of the supervisee, as well as a means of supporting them in their work. In this book Mooli Lahad argues that the most effective method of supervision uses both right and left hemispheres of the brain, the intuitive and logical. He encourages the use of metaphors, images and stories to enrich theoretical knowledge and improve our understanding of the processes of therapy and support. In Creative Supervision Lahad introduces techniques, drawn from the expressive arts therapies, which can be employed during a supervision to release information from the creative hemisphere of the brain. These techniques include storytelling, role-playing, guided fantasy, imaginary dialogues, letter-writing, drawing, and the use of colours and shapes. Case examples show how the techniques were used, and how they provided insight into problematic relationships with clients. Drawing from his experiences of working in the aftermath of tragedy in Israel, Northern Ireland and the former Yugoslavia, Lahad examines how to supervise a crisis intervention team: he also focuses on self-supervision.Combining humanistic, creative and practical approaches, Creative Supervision gives a fresh, new perspective which will inspire supervisors to re-think their practice.Trade ReviewWithin each chapter Lahad focuses on a particular creative technique and at the end of the twelve chapters, the reader has a wealth of information about the use of expressive art therapies in supervision which includes storytelling, role-playing, guided fantasy, imagery dialogues, letter writing, drawing and the use of colours and shapes... I feel that this book would be an excellent addition to the supervisor's and supervisee's repertoire. -- Play for Life, Karen O'Neill, PTUK Play Therapists and Supervisor, APAC Course DirectorA rich account of the very practical creative methods for the practice of supervision.Lahad opens his chest of treasures collected over more than 20 years of practical and shares them with us generously. Himself a psychologist, drama-therapist, supervisor, and consultant in war and crisis-stricken areas, he experiences in his everyday work extreme situations and the vital role of the imagination in the saving of lives. In this book, he shows us multiple ways of applying this work to supervision. This book is a must-have for everyone working or wishing to work in supervision not only cognitively but also in efficient, intuitive and creative way. -- The International Journal of the Arts in PsychotherapyThis book gives an interesting perspective on the use of arts therapies techniques and tools, for example drama therapy or art therapy in supervision. The author gives numerous examples of the techniques he uses as a facilitator in supervising such varied professionals as child protection officers, art therapists and crisis workers. The broad range of tools employed allows professional care givers to examine their practice afresh. -- Therapy WeeklyThis is a delightful book that brings creative ideas from Mooli Lahad's work across a range of disciplines that could be usefully shared by counsellors, counselling supervisors and trainers of supervisors... she provides suggestions for exercises that are able to access intuition and logic, and can be applied to individual, group and self-supervision. Ideas are illuminated by useful examples of ways of using metaphor, visualisation, writing, drawing and dramatic techniques in his work with practitioners who find themselves facing confusion, stuckness or resistance with their clients or supervisees. The reader is shown how, by valuing and connecting with individuals through their strengths, we can encourage them to develop modes of experiencing they may use infrequently. -- Counselling and Psychotherapy JournalThe richness of his supervisory style and techniques jumps off the page at you, thus the book is lively, colourful and thought provoking. Anyone wanting to stimulate and challenge their ideas about supervision will get something from this book. -- The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling & PsychotherapyThis book is rooted in the creative supervision programme at the London Centre for Psychodrama... The authors write concisely yet at depth about complex levels of supervisory processes.... I enjoyed the interweaving of supervision theory and methodology with descriptions of how using creative approaches can unlock human experience and catalyse reflective processes. I was excited by the art-based, six-shape supervision structure... was moved by the chapter describing supervision of work with children and greatly enjoyed the thoughtful way in which the chapter on 'potential space' knitted together multiple strands. This book is a well-articulated, grounded resource for supervisors and trainee supervisors working in creative therapeutic fields and a useful addition to their essential reading list. -- Steve page, coach, supervisor and author * Therapy Today *Table of ContentsIntroduction. 1.
