Cambridge University Press Algebra Through Practice
Book SynopsisProblem solving is an art that is central to understanding and ability in mathematics. With this series of books the authors have provided a selection of problems with complete solutions and test papers designed to be used with or instead of standard textbooks on algebra. For the convenience of the reader, a key explaining how the present books may be used in conjunction with some of the major textbooks is included. Each book of problems is divided into chapters that begin with some notes on notation and prerequisites. The majority of the material is aimed at the student of average ability but there are some more challenging problems. By working through the books, the student will gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts involved, and practice in the formulation, and so solution, of other algebraic problems. Later books in the series cover material at a more advanced level than the earlier titles, although each is, within its own limits, self-contained.Table of ContentsPreface; Background reference material; 1. Matrices and linear equations; 2. Inverses and determinants; 3. Eigenvalues and diagonalisation; 4. Vector spaces; 5. Linear mappings; 6. Inner product spaces; Solutions to chapter 1; Solutions to chapter 2; Solutions to chapter 3; Solutions to chapter 4; Solutions to chapter 5; Solutions to chapter 6; Test paper 1; Test paper 2; Test paper 3; Test paper 4.

Cambridge University Press Spinors and Space Time Volume 1 Volume 1
Book SynopsisThis volume introduces and systematically develops the calculus of 2-spinors. This is the first detailed exposition of this technique which leads not only to a deeper understanding of the structure of space-time, but also provides shortcuts to some very tedious calculations. Many results are given here for the first time.Trade Review' … by far the most comprehensive treatment in the literature of spinorial methods in general relativity … I would regard this new work as one whose acquisition should be given top priority by anyone working in either the classical or quantum theories of gravity.' Contemporary Physics' … not only provides a highly readable account of spinor calculus that is unparalleled in its depth and thoroughness, but also serves as a valuable source of reference for the numerous spinor and spinor-related formulae that arise in space-time physics.' New ScientistTable of ContentsPreface; 1. The geometry of world-vectors and spin-vectors; 2. Abstract indices and spinor algebra; 3. Spinors and world-tensors; 4. Differentiation and curvature; 5. Fields in space-time; Appendix; References; Subject and author index; Index of symbols.

Cambridge University Press Rings and Factorization
Book SynopsisThis textbook is an introduction to the concept of factorization and its application to problems in algebra and number theory. The book also contains many exercises of varying degrees of difficulty together with hints and solutions.Table of ContentsPreface; Introduction; Part I: Rings; 1. Introduction; 2. Binary operations; 3. Definition of a ring; 4. Homomorphisms, subrings and isomorphisms; 5. Integral domains; 6. Fields; 7. Residue-class rings; Part II: Factorization; 8. Introduction; 9. Cambridge University Press Indras Pearls
Book SynopsisFor a century, Klein's vision of infinitely repeated reflections, practically impossible to represent by hand, barely existed outside the imagination of mathematicians, In the 1980s, the authors embarked on the first computer exploration of Klein's vision, here available for the first time in print, with the programs that generate them.Trade Review'[This book is] richly illustrated with these wonderful and mysterious pictures and gives detailed instructions for recreating them, right down to the level of computer programs (written in pseudo-code, and easy to translate into any computer language) … the reader who attempts any substantial subset of [the projects] will gain enormously … Even those who are convinced they have no ability to visualize may change their minds … It is almost required reading for the experts in the field … I truly love this book.' John H. Hubbard, The American Mathematical Monthly'It has been a great pleasure to read such a gracefully written, original book of mathematics … it is a flowing narrative, leavened with wit, whimsy, and lively cartoons by Larry Gonick. The three authors, with the support of Cambridge University Press, have produced a book that is as handsome in physical appearance as its content is stimulating and accessible. The book is an exemplar of its genre and a singular contribution to the contemporary mathematics literature.' Albert Marden, Notices (journal of the American Mathematical Society)'The production of the book leaves nothing to be desired. It is splendid. Printed entirely on glossy paper, with practically all of the many figures in glorious color, the book has a number of admirable design features: large type and wide margins wherein references are given and occasional comments (often quite talky) are made. Cambridge University Press has done a beautiful job, and David Tranah of the Press deserves special commendation for his role in pulling out all the stops.' Philip J. Davis, SIAM News'All of it is patiently explained … By the time you finish, you'll know your way around the complex plane.' Brian Hayes, American Scientist'The book itself is a work of art … I am sure that [it] will have a major impact on the way we teach geometry and dynamics … a jewel that will more than repay the persistent reader's efforts.' Michael Field, Science'I rarely feel a certain kind of euphoria by just looking at the cover of a mathematics book. But that happened with Indra's Pearls: The Vision of Felix Klein … [contains] fantastic illustrations together with apparently well-founded mathematical explanations … [it is] presented in an accessible way which dares to prioritize general comprehension above a strict theoretical approach … As far as I know, this book is one of the most beautiful examples of the illustration of the inherent aesthetic beauty (which exists) within mathematics … the images are of the highest quality obtainable at present for mathematical structures. Everyone, who ever tried to create something comparable, knows how difficult it is.' Jürgen Richter-Gebert, Technische Universität München'This unique book can serve as a pedagogical and visual introduction to group theory for schoolchildren, and yet is just as suitable for professional mathematicians: I believe that both of them would read the book from the beginning to the end. Finally, it can be used as a book for popularising science, but is very different from most fashionable books on strings, black holes, etc: it gives you the joy of seeing, thinking and understanding.' European Mathematical Society'This is a beautifully presented book, rich in mathematical gems.' The Mathematical Gazette'One can browse through the numerous beautiful and fascinating pictures and marvel at them … Readers with widely different backgrounds will find something enjoyable in this unique book.' Acta Scientiarum MathematicarumTable of ContentsPreface; Introduction; 1. The language of symmetry; 2. A delightful fiction; 3. Double spirals and Möbius maps; 4. The Schottky dance; 5. Fractal dust and infinite words; 6. Indra's necklace; 7. The glowing gasket; 8. Playing with parameters; 9. Accidents will happen; 10. Between the cracks; 11. Crossing boundaries; 12. Cambridge University Press Commutative Ring Theory 8 Cambridge Studies in Advanced Mathematics Series Number 8
Book SynopsisIn addition to being an interesting and profound subject in its own right, commutative ring theory is important as a foundation for algebraic geometry and complex analytical geometry. Matsumura covers the basic material, including dimension theory, depth, Cohen-Macaulay rings, Gorenstein rings, Krull rings and valuation rings. More advanced topics such as Ratliff's theorems on chains of prime ideals are also explored. The work is essentially self-contained, the only prerequisite being a sound knowledge of modern algebra, yet the reader is taken to the frontiers of the subject. Exercises are provided at the end of each section and solutions or hints to some of them are given at the end of the book.Trade Review"...an absolutely essential companion to researchers in commutative algebra and an important reference for those in neighboring fields." American ScientistTable of ContentsPreface; Introduction; Conventions and terminology; 1. Commutative rings and modules; 2. prime ideals; 3. Properties of extension rings; 4. Valuation rings; 5. Dimension theory; 6. Regular sequences; 7. Regular rings; 8. Flatness revisited; 9. Derivations; 10. I-smoothness; 11. Applications of complete local rings; Appendices; References; Index.
