Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Agriculture, Trade and the Environment: The
Book SynopsisThis timely book focuses on the liberalization of agricultural policy and questions whether it is compatible with the goal of achieving economic and environmental sustainability in the European Union. It presents an invaluable contribution to the growing literature on the sustainability and policy aspects of trade liberalization, focusing on European agriculture.Agriculture, Trade and the Environment discusses quantitative methods for the assessment of agriculture-environment trade-offs for policy analysis at the firm, regional or national levels. It also presents the experience of countries in Europe, with particular regard to the impact of the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy and the repercussions of the Uruguay Round. Using a wide range of analytical and quantitative tools, country case studies examine agricultural areas in Austria, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Greece and Estonia. The authors then go on to look at future developments in an enlarged EU context. They conclude that efficient policies for environmental management in the EU need to be tailored to fit local conditions. Any attempt to impose uniform policies across a region as environmentally and economically diverse as Europe will have widely divergent and unintended consequences. This book will prove invaluable to academics and students with an interest in agricultural economics, environmental and ecological economics and the European Union.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction 1. Comparative Statics on a Two-Country, One-Commodity, Two-Factor Agricultural Trade Model with Process-Generated Pollution 2. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Agricultural Policy
Book SynopsisAgricultural politics and policy retain a central place in the politics of advanced industrial societies. Governments in most countries continue to subsidise agricultural production and regulate markets for farm commodities. The growth of concern about the environmental impact of agriculture has added a new dimension to the sector's politics. Tensions between the US and the EU over the protection of agriculture remain a major feature. New Zealand offers an interesting example of an experiment with deregulated and liberalised agriculture, while Japanese agriculture continues to be highly protected. All these topics are covered in this two volume set, which brings together the best writing on the subject from leading agricultural economists, political scientists and rural sociologists from across the world.Trade Review'This large collection of forty-eight articles is extremely useful for specialists in agricultural policy and showcases the strengths in this literature. It provides convenient access to a wealth of information on agricultural policy and the factors driving its development, particularly within Europe. . . . The strength of this collection is its disciplinary breadth. The editors have selected articles from economics, sociology, public administration, political science, and public policy journals.' -- Elizabeth Moore, Canadian Public AdministrationTable of ContentsContents: Volume I: Agricultural Policy in Western Europe Acknowledgements • Introduction Part I Theoretical Perspectives 1. West Virginia University Press Seeds of Occupation, Seeds of Possibility: The
Book SynopsisHow Hawaiʻi became the epicenter of the biotech seed industry, and how a resistance movement arose to confront the industry’s power. Hawaiʻi is a primary site for development of herbicide-resistant corn seed and, until recently, was host to more experimental field trials of genetically engineered crops than anywhere else in the world. It is also a node of powerful resistance. While documentaries and popular news stories have profiled the biotech seed industry in Hawaiʻi, Seeds of Occupation, Seeds of Possibility is the first book to detail the social and historical conditions by which the chemical-seed oligopoly came to occupy the most geographically isolated islands in the world and made the soils of Hawaiʻi the epicenter of agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology testing. Andrea Brower, an activist-scholar from Hawaiʻi, examines the consequences related to genetically engineered seed development for Hawaiʻi’s people and the social movement that has risen in response. With insights beyond the islands, Seeds of Occupation, Seeds of Possibility illuminates why visions for a radically better world must be expanded by intersectional and systemically oriented movements.Trade ReviewWhere this book differs from other academic studies about power in Hawaiʻi is in its steadfast commitment to demonstrating the power of intersectional resistance. Brower's interest in capitalism and agrochemical agriculture's colonization of food production is not only to expose the dangers to human and nonhuman life but also to demonstrate how a resistance that spans ethnicities, classes, genders, and other distinct interest groups derives power from coalition instead of division. This book is a timely examination of Hawaiʻi's struggles over land and power."—Kathryn Besio, University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo"This book is a powerful intervention of truth and transparency into corporate darkness and influence. It explodes the myth of benevolence and the drive to feed the world in the agricultural biotechnology industry. What might seem like battles on the edge of the empire in places like Hawaiʻi can actually be seen as central sites of leadership, resistance, and innovation in grappling against global structures and power. Hawaiʻi's place as the epicenter for a global battle over our future—the future of our food systems, the impacts of pesticides and herbicides on human health and environment, and the need for courageous actors—is made clear by this work. We need this book."—Kamana Beamer, University of Hawaiʻi at MānoaTable of Contents Acknowledgments Introduction: Contested Futures 1. The Agrochemical-Seed-Biotech Oligopoly 2. Business Expert Press Food and Architecture
Book SynopsisFood and architecture, the two pillars of human civilization, have intertwined to such extents to sustain the civilization itself, that the connection between the two has visually ceased to exist. The apparent diverse fields of human life have worked upon similar principles through ages from the beginning of mankind and they complemented our existence. Food is fundamental to cross-cultural studies of behavior, thought, and imagery. We eat for many reasons than just to satisfy our appetite. The act of eating is now a way of socializing with others. Hence all major institutes of food service are trying hard to amaze their users with a built environment that complements the served delicacy. Although most of the users might not understand the thought consciously but subconscious mind keeps alarming when things don’t fall in place. The book surfs through all the aspects of such two diverse fields and tries to show a parallel through a very socialistic and holistic perspective. It’s interesting to understand the intangible logics behind the very tangible aspects of human life.

NIAS Press The UP Saga
Book SynopsisHistories of the plantations sector in Malaysia have largely focused on the rubber industry and on the rise and fall of big British-owned colonial enterprises. But since independence, the sector has entered a new phase of spectacular growth founded on the oil palm. This volume offers a radically different history of a firm which spans both eras. The fascinating story of United Plantations Berhad (UP) highlights a Scandinavian-founded firm that evolved along quite different lines from the normal models of British imperial business. Tracing the company's origins before the First World War, it describes the crisis years of economic depression and Japanese occupation then on to the years of spectacular growth which has lasted since the time of the Emergency and Merdeka right up to the present day. The success of this firm - based not just on an extraordinary combination of agricultural, engineering and marketing innovation but also on the company's engagement and commitment to its local environment - provides a glowing example of a partnership between Europeans and Asians which has benefited both sides.

Springer Economics of Agricultural Crop Insurance: Theory
Book SynopsisGovernment subsidized crop insurance has been used by a number of developed countries as a mechanism to reduce farm income instability by reducing yield risks. This book provides an in-depth analysis and evaluation of government provided crop insurance in developed countries. The book is organized into three sections: Part one presents background material on crop insurance programs in the U.S., Canada and selected other countries. Part two provides some analytical models of multiple peril crop insurance which suggest the possibility of modification of design which could improve performance and which explores theoretical linkages between crop insurance decisions and other producer decisions previously not analyzed. The main part of the book is Part three, where the results of a series of empirical studies using databases particularly designed to answer crop insurance questions are presented. This part of the book tests a number of the hypotheses which were raised in Parts one and two regarding reasons for the view widely held by economists that crop insurance has not functioned well. Springer Verlag, Singapore Contract Farming, Capital and State:
Book SynopsisThe book argues that an increasing corporatisation of agriculture in India that is enabled by its neoliberal State, in the name of ‘development’, is contributing towards deepening of inequality in the rural India. It says that Contract Farming (CF) acts as a conduit that enables the coming together of myriad production relations (mercantile, finance, productive) to sell agri-commodities to the capitalist peasant. It is an accumulation strategy that brings together various factions of domestic and foreign capital together. It shows that CF as an accumulation strategy is enabled by an active interventionist state and this neoliberal Indian state mediates the relation between the agri-capital and Indian peasantry. The book further analyzes contract farming as a part of the totality of the capitalist mode of production in context of developing countries with a large agrarian base--- asking three fundamental questions – what is CF, how and why is it done and what are the implications of it.Table of Contents1: Introduction and Rethinking Contract Farming.- 2: Punjab: An Interesting place to study Agrarian Change .- 3: Understanding the Social Relations of Contract Farming .- 4: Stating the (not so) obvious: The ‘Interventionist Neoliberal State’ in India.- 5: Understanding CF: CF as a strategy to enable dispossession-free accumulation strategy.- 6:Implications of CF 01: Technology Rhetoric in Contract Farming.- 7: Implications 02: Social Effects of Contract Farming.- 8: Conclusion: Are the Global Agri-Corporates saving the Third World Peasantry?.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Agricultural Development in Asia and Africa:
Book SynopsisThis Open Access book explores the multifaceted nature of agricultural and rural development in Asia and examines the extent to which the Asian experience is being replicated in contemporary Africa. This volume compiles the works of top scholars who provided analyses and evidences from household-level surveys collected for many years in several parts of Asia and Africa. The most important finding presented in this book is that African agricultural development has evolved following the pathways of Asian agricultural development. The common pathways are borrowed technology from abroad and adaptive research in rice farming; secured property rights on natural resources; adoption of ICTs; investments in human capital, including training; and launching of the high-value agriculture. In both continents, agricultural development started in the crop sector, which had a strong tendency to induce the dynamic development of other sectors in rural areas.Table of ContentsYou’ve Come a Long Way SinceMasao KikuchiIntroduction: Agricultural Development in Asia and AfricaJonna P. NUS Press Indonesian Exports, Peasant Agriculture and the
Book SynopsisAn 'Indonesian economy' first took shape in the latter part of the nineteenth century, consisting of a dominant export industry supported by a rural agrarian sphere. The agricultural sector provided food and labour to the export sector, which was firmly embedded in the world economy. This economic pattern survived several shifts of the leading export industry and persisted even after Indonesia became independent in the mid-20th century.Hiroyoshi Kano uses international trade statistics to analyze three key elements in the Indonesian economy: the balance of international payments and trade, the transformation undergone by leading export industries, and the way in which the agricultural sector supplied land, labour and food. Dividing the 150-year time span covered by the book into four periods based on the prevailing major export industries, he identifies key actors and analyzes long-term changes in agricultural production and rural society, and how they shaped the national economy.
