  • Envisioning Democracy

University of Toronto Press Envisioning Democracy

Book SynopsisFew terms elicit such strong and varied feelings and yet have so little clarity as democracy. Leaders of large states use democracy to designate their nations’ public character even as critics and rivals use the term to validate their own political perspectives. In Envisioning Democracy, the editors and contributors address the following questions: What does democracy mean today? What could it mean tomorrow? What is the dynamic of democracy in an increasingly interdependent world? Envisioning Democracy explores these questions amid the dynamic of democracy as a political phenomenon interacting with forms of economic, ethical, ethnic, and intellectual life. The book draws on the work of Sheldon S. Wolin (19222015), one of the most influential American theorists of the last fifty years. Here, scholars consider the historical conditions, theoretical elements, and practical impediments to democracy, using Wolin’s insights as touchstones in thinking thrTable of ContentsIntroduction Section 1: Wolin and Democratic Theory – Ancient Roots, Modern Issues 1. • Teen Spirit

    Cornell University Press Teen Spirit

Book SynopsisTeen Spirit offers a novel and provocative perspective on how we came to be living in an age of political immaturity and social turmoil. Award-winning author Paul Howe argues it''s because a teenage mentality has slowly gripped the adult world.Howe contends that many features of how we live todaysome regrettable, others beneficialcan be traced to the emergence of a more defined adolescent stage of life in the early twentieth century, when young people started spending their formative, developmental years with peers, particularly in formal school settings. He shows how adolescent qualities have slowly seeped upward, where they have gradually reshaped the norms and habits of adulthood. The effects over the long haul, Howe contends, have been profound, in both the private realm and in the public arena of political, economic, and social interaction. Our teenage traits remain part of us as we move into adulthood, so much so that some now need instruction manuals for adultinTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. The Character of Adolescents 2. • The Sandwich Generation: Caring for Oneself and

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The Sandwich Generation: Caring for Oneself and

Book SynopsisRising life expectancy has led to the growth of the 'Sandwich Generation' - men and women who are caregivers to their children of varying ages as well as for one or both parents whilst still managing their own household and work responsibilities. This book considers both the strains and benefits of this position. Tackling a myriad of issues such as gender, parents and parents-in-law, ethnic differences, residential status, and developing changes in the caregiving relationship such as Alzheimer's or dementia, this book highlights the complexities of the caregiving relationship. Key chapters also address potential benefits including improved relationships, skill set development and generously giving to another. Expert contributors use examples to illustrate the need for organizations to address increases in caregiving among their employees and develop supportive policies and initiatives. They further show that there is a need at the country level to integrate employees, communities, employers, businesses and levels of government to deal with this increasing trend. This timely book will prove an indispensible reference for academics and students interested in the sandwich generation, caregiving and health. Its practical approach will also benefit human resource management professionals, managers dealing with sandwiched employees and health administrators at various levels of government.Contributors include: R. By showing that multigenerational caregiving is now a global and cross-cultural phenomenon - significantly impacted by the worldwide aging of the population and the financial insecurity of the younger generation - Burke and Calvano draw our attention to the complexities involved. They effectively demonstrate that these issues impact not only families, but also workplaces and governments, and that all three groups must work collaboratively to address the challenges of caring for the most vulnerable in our society. • Broken Dreams: An Intimate History of the Midlife

Reaktion Books Broken Dreams: An Intimate History of the Midlife

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe midlife crisis has become a cliché in modern society. Since the mid-twentieth century, the term has been used to explain infidelity in middle-aged men, disillusionment with personal achievements, the pain and sadness associated with separation and divorce, and the fear of approaching death. This book provides a meticulously researched account of the social and cultural conditions in which middle-aged men and women began to re-evaluate their hopes and dreams, reassess their relationships, and seek new forms of identity and fresh pathways to self-satisfaction. Drawing on a rich seam of literary, medical, media and cinematic sources, as well as personal accounts, it explores how the crises of middle-aged men and women were shaped by increased life expectancy, changing family structures, shifting patterns of work, and the rise of individualism.Trade Review"Medical historian Jackson examines in this thought-provoking scholarly study the social and cultural factors that made the midlife crisis 'a key feature of private lives and public debate in the mid-twentieth century. . . . Jackson’s expansive range and nuanced readings of popular culture more than make his case. This is a pinpoint dissection of an influential if slippery concept." * Publishers Weekly *“In what will surely be recognized as the classic account of how the midlife crisis became the lens through which we perceive and experience middle age, Jackson uncovers the cultural, demographic, economic, and social scientific factors that led us to see midlife as a uniquely problematic life stage. Whether you consider midlife as a point at which discontented women and men compulsively seek to preserve their youthful dreams and vitality or as an opportunity for reinvention and renewal, Broken Dreams will prompt you to view middle age in a fresh light: as a stage that is perhaps life’s most complex and challenging.” -- Steven Mintz, Professor of History, University of Texas at Austin, author of "The Prime of Life: A History of Modern Adulthood"“Synthesizing his account from a wide variety of source materials, Jackson demonstrates convincingly that even though midlife itself resists neat definition, it nevertheless transcended biomedical, social, and cultural domains from the early twentieth century onwards. Covering a diverse range of themes, but focusing particularly on gender, this important book will serve as a touchstone for all historians concerned with ageing, family, sex, and the life course.” -- James F. Stark, Professor of Medical Humanities, University of Leeds, author of “The Cult of Youth: Anti-Ageing in Modern Britain”

A trendy industry, this type of consulting is centered around courses, workshops, books, and conferences, all claiming to hold the secrets of success. But what kind of promises does the notion of innovation entail? What is it about the ideology and practice of business innovation that has made these consulting firms so successful at selling their services to everyone from small start-ups to Fortune 500 companies? Most importantly, what does business innovation actually mean for work and our economy in general in 2019? In Creativity on Demand, cultural anthropologist Eitan Wilf seeks to answer these questions by returning to the fundamental and pervasive expectation of continual business innovation. Wilf focuses a keen eye on how our obsession with innovation stems from the long-standing value of acceleration in capitalist society. Based on ethnographic work with innovation cons

Book SynopsisNATIONAL BESTSELLERA smart, research-driven case for why optimism, kindness, and strong social networks will help us live to 100.From the day her daughter was born, science journalist Marta Zaraska fretted about what she and her family were eating. She fasted, considered adopting the keto diet, and ran a half-marathon. She bought goji berries and chia seeds and ate organic food. But then her research brought her to read countless scientific papers and to interview dozens of experts in various fields of study, including molecular biochemistry, epidemiology and neuroscience. What Marta discovered shattered her long-held beliefs about aging and longevity. A strong support network of family and friends, she learned, lowers mortality risk by about 45 percent, while exercise only lowers it by about 23 percent. Volunteering your free time lowers it by 22 percent or so, while certain health fads like turmeric haven't been shown to help at all. These revelations led Marta Zaraska to a simple conclusion: In addition to healthy nutrition and physical activity, deepening friendships, practicing empathy and contemplating your purpose in life can improve your lifespan. Through eleven chapters that take her around the world, from catching wild mice in the woods of central England to flower arranging with octogenarians in Japan, from laboratories to hugging centres, Marta embarks on an absorbing, entertaining and insightful journey to determine the habits that will have the greatest impact on our longevity. Deeply researched and expertly reported, Growing Young will dramatically change the way you seek a longer, happier life.

Book SynopsisDo you fear that growing old means being trapped in a body filled with aches, pains, sags, and losses? Too many of us do-especially women. Though our youth-obsessed society is partly to blame, Dr. Susan Sands explains there is a deeper and unrecognized factor: we have never really gotten to know our bodies, to sense and feel our bodies from the inside out. With The Inside Story, she offers a much-needed guide for helping us understand, befriend, and support our bodies as we grow older. Without downplaying the real challenges we face as we age, Dr. Sands offers a wealth of case studies, interviews, and scientific findings to rewrite the common cultural beliefs that put us at odds with our own bodies. Here, she shares a wealth of powerful embodiment tools-including traditional practices such as meditation and yoga, as well as breathing methods, neural feedback techniques, guidance on diet and exercise, and more. Most of us have never been taught how to truly connect with our bodies-yet growing older can provide us a golden opportunity to heal this inner divide. "As older women, we are actually primed to experience our bodies more deeply and pleasurably," Dr. Sands says. "Our bodies are quieter and slower. Aging can open up a transformative new capacity for body awareness, allowing us to experience our whole selves for perhaps the first time with respect, tenderness, and love."

Book SynopsisThe contributions to this volume show that, in pre-industrial Europe, women in their prime, women, that is, who had reached maturity and were beyond fertility, but not yet in old age, constitute a separate category for historical and literary analysis. These wise old women, or WOWs, took on tasks in society which were essentially different from the ones they had taken on before, mainly in the household. The case studies presented here show that some of these women entered a second phase of creativity and productivity and were even able to fulfil their desires at the age of forty. Being able, at last, to find their authentic selves, they acquired a female voice of their own. For some of them, for example, Christine de Pizan, the age of forty even functioned as a trope of female authorship.
