Book SynopsisWorld-renowned ice climber Margo Talbot shares her compelling story of healing and self-discovery amid the frozen landscapes of the planet.Born and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Margo Talbot grew up with a distant mother who ruled the household with her eyes; a father who opted to spend much of his time away from home; and four siblings struggling to deal with their particular domestic situation. As a result of her family's dysfunction and her own growing mental illness, young Margo rarely smiled, had difficulty connecting with others, and was plagued with a black wave of anger and sadness that overshadowed much of the world around her. In time, drugs, alcohol, sex, and violence became her primary ways to connect with herself and others. From the depths of suicidal depression and a conversation with Death, Talbot eventually found solace and redemption in both the healing power of nature and the glory of climbing frozen landscapes in some of the world's most pristine and challenging environments. Heartbreaking, honest, energizing, and inspiring All That Glitters is a remarkable memoir that shines a fresh light of hope on mental illness.

Book SynopsisThis anthology is a collection of personal accounts, research, treatment approaches and policy commentary exploring women's experiences of mothering in the context of addiction. Individual chapters focus on a variety of addictions during pregnancy or mothering including misuse of substances, food and smartphones. A central theme of the book is the meaning of women's maternal identity as key to recovery. Part I focusses on women's lived experiences of mothering through their addiction and recovery. The chapters in part II report findings from studies that have prioritized the perspective of mothers living with addiction. In Part III of this collection, we expand our view of addiction and turn to approaches for supporting mothers of daughters with eating disorders and prevention of smartphone addiction. In part IV, contributors expand on the themes of harm reduction and restorative, healing approaches to the treatment of mothers' addictions that have echoed throughout the chapters of this book. The anthology concludes with a gendered analysis and critique of addiction programs and policy.

  • Addiction as Existence

Taylor & Francis Ltd Addiction as Existence

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAddiction is often thought about in terms of cause, be that brain chemistry, attachment patterns or cognitive schemas. But this does not allow an understanding of what addiction 'is'. It does not illuminate how addiction is lived. A phenomenology of addiction reveals that addiction is characterised by an intolerance of pain, a pursuit of pleasure, immediacy, technocratic solutions, alienation, ambiguity and is drenched in deception. These are its individual clinical manifestations, but this is also the way life, in this century is lived. The addict is thus the ultimate 21st century subject, consuming without end, intolerant of emotion and unable to grasp their own limitations. Rather than embraced, these subjects act as a denied symptom, haunting late capitalism and exposing the vampire-like nature of our culture. As such, these subjects need to be treated not just as individuals who have "gone too far", but as victims of the political agenda shaping our lives. Thus the heart of the book is a description of addiction deepened by existential-phenomenological theory. This description is then used to understand the historical emergence of addiction, its socio-political manifestation and also the crucial issue of how to clinically treat the addict-subject.Table of ContentsAcknowledgementsPrefacePart I Setting the agenda1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis handbook provides mental health professionals with a thorough understanding of the biopsychosocial nature of disordered gambling and shares current evidence-based theories, interventions and strategies to use in clinical practice. It provides guidance for working with individuals of any age and covers different gambling modes, activities and subtypes, including new forms of gambling through online and virtual platforms. Drawing on the authors' substantial experience working with and researching gambling addiction, it considers how treatment can be specialized for particular client groups, including trauma survivors, military, older adults, adolescents and diverse communities. It provides detailed diagnostic and screening resources and includes important information on the financial and legal aspects. This is essential reading for any therapist treating clients with gambling disorder.Trade ReviewNot all addictions are the same, so treating them should address the unique features of the addiction, in this case gambling disorder. Bechtold and Wilson highlight aspects of gambling disorder that differ from other addictions and provide concrete ideas for therapists and other professional helpers to improve their practice, whether they treat the gambling or refer someone for treatment. The rich details are rooted in up-to-date evidence, and case examples illustrate how to tailor and use core therapeutic skills in treating persons with gambling disorder and their families. They explain how boundary setting, addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, addressing finances, and interacting with and documenting for the judicial system are critical and different for people facing gambling problems. It highlights key screening and assessment tools and provides resources that can supplement therapy and increase the likelihood of recovery. This book offers insights for both new and seasoned professionals. -- Elizabeth Mulvaney, MSW, LCSW-PA, Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Pittsburgh School of Social WorkThe Gambling Disorder Handbook by Jody Bechtold and Alyssa Wilson is the most comprehensive, current guide for the treatment of gambling disorder I have encountered. It provides a solid, evidence-informed rationale for a broad range of treatment approaches while also addressing "real-life" clinical applications. The authors, using their significant clinical experience, also address under-researched topics that are critical to the treatment of gambling disorder such as financial management, restitution, money protection planning and coping with legal issues. This book is a must have for any clinician working with clients and their families struggling with gambling disorder. -- Lori Rugle, PhD, ICGC-II/BACCNew to treating gambling disorders? Struggling to translate theory/research? Well, Bechtold and Wilson provide an updated, clear, concise, practical, and evidence-based treatment guide. Current trends, gambling subtypes, holistic emphasis, case illustrations, and models of intervention--application connect the dots! This is a must-read treatment roadmap for every addiction professional. -- Deborah G. Haskins, Ph.D., LCPC, ACS, MAC, ICGC-II, CCGSO, BACC Owner/Chief Clinical Consultant – MOSAIC Consulting and Counseling Services President, Maryland Council on Problem GamblingA must read! "The Gambling Disorder Treatment Handbook" serves as a much needed, modern resource for those treating problem gambling. Addressing a wide range of relevant topics and offering up to date statistics, this book is a valuable asset to any treatment professional, educator or parent dealing with gambling related issues. -- Josh Ercole, Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of PennsylvaniaI appreciate the opportunity to review and recommend this informative and well laid out manuscript written by Jody Bechtold and Alyssa Wilson. I am sure the clinicians that will utilize this book will gain the knowledge necessary to provide excellent therapeutic skills to the problem/disordered gambler. I look forward to being able to share this book with our treatment providers. The case studies will help the clinician to understand the dynamics of the problem/disordered gambler. • Counselling the Person Beyond the Alcohol Problem

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Counselling the Person Beyond the Alcohol Problem

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAt the heart of Richard Bryant-Jefferies' work with problem drinkers is his belief in the power and effectiveness of the person-centred approach to counselling. He suggests that many alcohol problems develop out of, or are connected with, relationship difficulties. He highlights the importance of building a therapeutic relationship with the person, and of engaging with their individuality to encourage sustainable lifestyle change underpinned by personal growth. This practical book shows how such client-focused counselling can support problem drinkers who are seeking to develop and sustain a less alcohol-centred way of life. Demonstrating how the client-counsellor relationship can be harnessed to empower the individual to help themselves, Richard* describes the health risks and effects on family life of alcohol dependency* considers the differences between young and old problem drinkers* analyses the support services available to those seeking change* suggests ways of coping with relapse.Supported by contributions from clients who have undergone counselling for alcohol reliance, this is a comprehensive and positive guide for people working with those who have a problematic relationship with alcohol.Trade ReviewThe author presents us with a very readable person-centred strategy for working with problem drinkers as an alternative to the normally 'directive' therapies that are practiced. It is debatable whether the theoretical purists would agree with this classification. -- The Drug & Alcohol ProfessionalI commend this book to those person-centred practitioners who have not ventured into this area of counselling before because they have considered it too "specialist". They will, I believe, be encouraged and emboldened. I commend it, too, to practitioners from other traditions who continue to entertain the false notion that person-centred counselling is not suitable for really serious problems. They may glimpse in its pages the self-evident but often neglected truth that it is persons who have problems and persons who demand our respect and professional commitment. -- Brian Thorne, Emeritus Professor of Counselling, University of East Anglia, UKThis is a highly readable book, recommended for any counsellor whose client may be drinking inappropriately or even a little too much. It includes numerous examples of illustrative dialogue between client and counsellor and a section about the family. It should become a core text for trainee alcohol counsellors. Furthermore, it provides an excellent summary of the application of the person-centred approach to managers of alcohol services, often not trained counsellors themselves, and sometimes suspicious of this way of working. -- Healthcare Counselling and Psychotherapy JournalI recently enjoyed reading 'Counselling the Person Beyond The Alcohol Problem' which I found informative and useful. I liked in particular the discussion/rationale of offering specialist knowledge in context as opposed to a sense of being an expert on your client. Like Richard, I struggle as best I can to offer the core conditions through my relationship with each client. What a relief I felt on reading his conviction that not to share helpful insight is to leave a client vulnerable - 'a form of negligence'. And that such insight, when proffered, arising from within a particular relationship is not being directive but, rather, congruent reading, this book will help me to be a more effective counsellor with 'this' client group, written as it is from a place of commitment to providing a caring and supportive therapeutic environment for clients. Thanks for writing a much-needed book! -- Diane Stead, Person-centred counsellorTable of ContentsPreface. • Cannabis and Young People: Reviewing the Evidence

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Cannabis and Young People: Reviewing the Evidence

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCannabis is at the centre of ongoing controversial and often confused debate. Opinions on its potential impact on health are sharply divided: some argue that it poses serious risks to mental health and that adolescent use may lead to psychotic illness in young adulthood, or that it acts as a gateway to hard drugs such as cocaine or opiates. Conversely, others point to alcohol or tobacco being far more harmful yet entirely legal.Cannabis and Young People aims to shed light on the current debates by reviewing all the available evidence on a range of issues relating to the use of cannabis among children and adolescents and summarizing the main conclusions in clear, jargon-free language.Areas covered include:* Patterns of cannabis use* Changes in usage* Young people's views on cannabis* The potential harmful effects, including mental health problems, educational attainment, antisocial behaviour* The family and social factors that can initiate cannabis use* The progression to regular use* The effects of decriminalizationThis book will be an essential read for anyone needing informed, authoritative information about cannabis and its effects.Trade ReviewProvides all the vital information surrounding cannabis in one text -- Youth & Policy`This is a useful introduction for any practitioner working with young people.' -- Journal of Mental Health`This book aims to strip away the polemics and establish the facts. The book is a useful summary and will be of interest to the professional working in the field… This book provides a good guide to the literature and research on cannabis and young people. The contextualisation of cannabis use among young people explores a complex range of social factors, notably, gender, age, ethnicity, class and anti-social behaviour… There is a helpful range of websites and literature sources.'`The book is slim with handy summaries at the end of each chapter, the underlying message being how difficult it is to make hard and fast statements on a subject so riven with ignorance and misinformation and about which everybody seems to be desperate for easy answers and quick fixes'. - Safer Society`Writing for mental health health professionals and parents, Jenkins (Institue of Psychiatry, London) reviews the evidence in a range of issues relating to the use, young people's views, predictors of use, psychosocial functioning , the gateway effect, prevention and treatment, and policy'. - Book News`This small book provides a considerable amount of very useful information for those who are involved in seeking to develop programs for the prevention and treatment of cannabis use. • Trauma, Drug Misuse and Transforming Identities:

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Trauma, Drug Misuse and Transforming Identities:

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisLooking at the life stories of ex-drug misusers in their own words, this book offers insights into the nature of addiction and how it can be tackled. It examines the links between early childhood experiences and drug misuse and also shows pathways to recovery and transformation.Kim Etherington highlights the therapeutic value of listening to drug misusers' life stories and the importance of understanding how social environments and the wider cultural influences shape people's lives. She encourages people working with drug misusers to challenge pathologising notions of `spoiled identity', which assume that identity is fixed. By taking a step back and separating the person from the problem, it is possible to help them explore their relationship with drugs in ways that encourage a stronger sense of agency and power to change. With compelling first-hand narratives and practical strategies to encourage drug misusers' ability to recover, this is essential reading for professionals working with drug users as well as people misusing drugs themselves.Trade ReviewThis stimulating book shows how children construct their identities from their experiences, how trauma disrupts this development and how drugs misuse can become the way they adapt to extreme situations. It also shows how drug misusers have used their own experiences and resources to eventually form healthy identities. Essential reading. -- Therapy TodayThe combination of the courageous revelations of the contributors and Etherington's careful and considered research approach is to be valued and prized... I hope this book is read by those in power, those who believe they know what to do with addicts... Congratulations to Kim Etherington and gratitude to the participants. -- Healthcare Counselling and Psychotherapy JournalWith each reading, I have come into contact with a further dimension of the book that I had previously not encountered. It is, without a doubt, a valuable resource for anyone wanting to move beyond the familiar stories commonly associated with drug misusers. I suggest it would be an excellent core text for students interested in gaining a more enriched understanding of how social and cultural factors can impact on an individual's life. In addition, there is much within this book that offers support to those currently negotiating their own difficult relationship with drugs as well as professionals wanting to enhance their work within the field of drug misuse... I have no hesitation in recommending this book. It is an inspirational, multilayered book that offers much to a wide range of readers. -- EscalateIf this book were made a compulsory read the helping professions might encourage more inclusive practice. I will certainly add it to the various reading lists under my influence as an educator. The core of the book, and its impact, comes from the experts by experience, who chart our journey through the underworld of human suffering. If that sounds extreme, I dare you to read it. As ever, when you really stop and listen you hear the patterns of abuse that underpin the seemingly random behaviour of the more obviously distressed. And for those of you who find comfort and refuge in diagnostic labels, be prepared to feel uneasy. This is the world of relating where little comes between you and the horror of the other person's life experience. You might want to cry or switch off for a while, but hopefully you will continue to see the person in the story... This book left me full of hope. Is there anything more awesome than bearing witness to the human spirit restoring itself from having been broken? -- Drugs and Alcohol TodayI welcome this study by Professor Kim Etherington because it is part of the process of understanding our drug problem and the whole chain of issues that lead to addiction. It is the stories of real people, and in doing so it holds a mirror not just to other people's lives but to our own. -- from the foreword by Monty Don, The Monty Project, UKTable of ContentsPrologue - Hannah's Story. It includes parents' own voices and allows them to explain what help they feel would best support families in similar situations. Book SynopsisAsperger Syndrome and Alcohol exposes the unexplored problem of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) using alcohol as a coping mechanism to deal with everyday life. Alcohol can relieve the anxiety of social situations and make those with ASDs feel as though they can fit in. Ultimately, however, reliance on alcohol can lead the user down a path of self-destruction and exacerbate existing problems.Utilising their professional and personal experience, the authors provide an overview of ASDs and of alcohol abuse, and explore current knowledge about where the two overlap. Tinsley explores his own personal history as someone with an ASD who has experienced and beaten alcohol addiction. He discusses how the impact of his diagnosis and his understanding of the condition played a huge part in his recovery, and how by viewing his life through the prism of autism, his confusion has been replaced by a greater understanding of himself and the world around him. This inspiring book on an under-researched area will be of interest to professionals working with people with ASDs, as well as individuals with ASDs who may be dealing with alcohol or substance misuse, and their families.Trade ReviewA concise, direct, soul-bearingly honest book part-written by a recovering alcoholic who only discovered that he had Asperger's syndrome once his recovery had begun...I found this a deeply moving book, partly because of the harrowing depiction of someone suffering in the tertiary stage of alcohol abuse byt, I think, mostly because of the unconditional love shown to him by his family and friends no matter how badly behaved nor how inconsiderate he was. -- Asperger UnitedAsperger Syndrome and Alcohol exposes the unexplored problem of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) using alcohol as a coping mechanism to deal with everyday life. • Alcohol and the Adult Brain

Taylor & Francis Ltd Alcohol and the Adult Brain

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe research literature on the impact of alcohol on the brain has seen a rapid expansion in recent years. Alcohol and the Adult Brain presents an up-to-date overview of some of the issues relevant to understanding and working with people with cognitive impairment as a result of chronic alcohol use.One issue causing barriers to effective treatment and care is the stigma associated with alcohol dependence, resulting in the belief that difficulties associated with alcohol related brain damage (ARBD) are ‘self-inflicted’. Cognitive changes resulting from alcohol excess and poor nutrition can directly affect an individual’s ability to motivate themselves, make decisions, and make the informed choices that underlie behaviour change. Attitudes held by professionals, reinforced by societal norms, that a person is ‘choosing to drink’ and ‘not motivated to engage with treatment’, in combination with the often subtle cognitive deficits associated with ARBD, can result in a lack of timely intervention, with enormous personal, social and economic cost. The chapters in this book set ARBD in a social and cultural context, provide discussion of the difficulties in definition and diagnosis, and outline the structural brain changes and neuropsychological deficits associated with chronic alcohol use. The book provides an overview of recent research on ARBD, including impairments associated with Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, and discusses up to date recommendations for managing and working with this complex and varied disorder. Alcohol and the Adult Brain will be essential for students and researchers working with ARBD and for practitioners in a range of health, social care and voluntary settings. Trade Review‘An impressive and timely overview of the growing health problem of alcohol and the brain. The book is well illustrated and comprehensive in its coverage. A definite and significant contribution to the field that will provide a firm foundation for future research.’ – David J. Nutt, Centre for Neuropsychopharmacology, Imperial College London, UK'Jenny Svanberg and her colleagues have admirably pulled togeter a range of experts to weave the diffuse literature into a coherent whole that reconciles complex neurobiology with sophisticated neuropsychology and a range of cultural and ethical issues. [...] I was impressed to see the potential relationship of culture to the development of alcohol-related brain damage highlighted in the book. [...] The authors highlight the complex interactions between physiological and psychological factors considered within the context of the dominant social milieu. It is also extremely laudable in an edited volume of this length that adequate scope is given to the ethical issues in considering the individual with alcohol-related brain damage, the use of vignettes being a particularly powerful medium in which to convey topics related to provision of care, mental capacity, and the legal system. In summary, this volume represents an excellent "one-stop" shop for the interested reader clinician, and research to avail themselves of the contemporary issues associated with the impact of alcohol on the adult brain. The book offers an excellent insight, firmly rooted in the evidences, and it represents an accessibhle read for the nonspecialist and a valuable refresher summary for the specialist looking for an update of key issues. Finally, there is no doubt, after reading this excellent volume, that in a societal-wide context, alcohol represents the most dangerous drug.' -Colin R. Indeed a recent report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (2011) highlights growing numbers of older people seeking help for alcohol problems and the necessity to understand and address their specific needs. Against this backdrop, Counselling Older People with Alcohol Problems sets out to provide a practice-based discussion and guide for those providing counselling to older people in this situation. Written by two practitioners, Counselling Older People with Alcohol Problems offers a largely person-centred and practical approach to counselling with older people... the authors have written a practical book that is likely to be very helpful to counsellors and other practitioners who are new to the topic of alcohol and older people... very readable and practical guide to helping older people to change their drinking behaviour later in life. -- British Society of GerontologyThis is the only book which addresses both the philosophy and practice of counselling older people with alcohol problems. It is based upon the authors' extensive experience of working with older people, and draws upon extensive case studies drawn from the experience of working in a specialist service for older people who have developed alcohol problems. The book is therefore based on a real understanding of the needs of this particular client group, how their alcohol problems have developed, and how they might be addressed. In overcoming alcohol dependency, older people invariably regain the ability to live more fulfilling and creative lives, and, as this book assists counsellors to take them on that journey, it is an invaluable tool for the caring profession, alcohol agencies and other helping bodies. -- Baroness Dianne Hayter of Kentish Town, Former Director of Alcohol ConcernMike Fox and Lesley Wilson have created an invaluable practical guide, highlighting specific issues for working with older people with alcohol problems. Book SynopsisDrugs and drug use are an integral part of human culture. Yet we know hardly anything about drugs, at least not the kind of knowledge that would help us to understand how drugs affect people and how people beome addicted to drugs. This is most surprising in the light of the vast amount of knowledge accumulated in the sciences. Psychoanalysis might not be an obvious choice for the treatment of addiction. Nevertheless, it is in an excellent position to make a contribution to a problem that has so far defied much of our understanding. By inviting people to speak about themselves, psychoanalysis has established a unique way of collecting clinical material, a material that surely must be immediately relevant coming as it does from the horse's mouth. With addiction on the increase, this fact alone justifies the necessity for a different approach.Providing a theoretical foundation for the argument that psychoanalysis should be seriously considered, and where possible incorporated into the treament of addicts, this thoughtful and innovative book can serve as an orientation in the ongoing front-line battle with addicts and addiction.Divided into three parts, the first part deals with Freud's writings on addicton including an in-depth examination of his so called 'cocaine papers', the second part examines how various strands of Freud's work on addiction were continued by his followers, while the last part formulates a Lacanian theory of addiction. This book is indispensible for anyone interested in addiction, the evolution of Freud's work, or contemporary psychoanalysis.Trade ReviewDrugs and drug use are an integral part of human culture. Book SynopsisIn this haunting memoir, Alison Gold gives a luminous account of key moments in her life that brought her to be the writer she is. They tell of her early activism; they tell of her descent into alcoholism; they tell of her recovery; they tell of her discovery of the power of writing to give a shape and meaning to a life. Found and Lost is both a tender memorial to the extraordinary people in her life, and a compelling tale of redemption. Starting with her childhood experience of running her primary school 'Lost and Found' depot, Gold develops, though a series of letters, a meditation on ageing, friendship, loss and the forces that link us to the dead. In the very act of writing, she begins to find a route out of depression and grief. Alison Leslie Gold is best known for her works that have kept alive stories from the time of the Holocaust, stories of courage and survival - most famously her Anne Frank Remembered, co-authored with Miep Gies (who risked her life to protect the Frank family). She has never chosen to write about her own life or what made her into a gatherer of other people's stories, until now, in Found and Lost. For she has chosen to go back to her childhood in order to chart the origin of her need to save objects, stories, people - including herself - who she has sensed to be on a road to perdition.Trade Review'Let us give recognition to Alison Gold. Without her and her talent, too, this poignant account, vibrating with humanity, would not have been written.' Ellie Wiesel on Anne Frank Remembered

Book SynopsisEveryone ‘knows’ what addiction is and what should be done for it. But as this book shows, individual experience cannot apply universally. The psychology of denial – addicts telling themselves that they aren't addicted – is the most devastating feature of addiction. This book offers much practical guidance, with reference to entirely anonymised individual experiences. The entire emphasis of the book is on what works. It also explains why some approaches do not work. The author contends that there are three causes for addiction: the antecedent cause is probably genetic; the contributory cause is emotional, physical or social trauma leading to a craving for mood-alteration; the precipitant cause is exposure – discovering something that lifts our mood. Treatment, he believes, will therefore also have to be in three phases, in reverse order: abstinence; emotional (not intellectual) therapy; daily relapse prevention by working the Twelve Step Programme first formulated by Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr Lefever explains specific addictions. These come in three clusters: hedonistic, nurturant and relationship. Some addicts have just one of these clusters, some two, some all. He shows how patients and their families can take action to unblock delay in seeking recovery. He considers known intervention techniques and family work in tackling compulsive helping, where pain is the great teacher. This practical book, which also explains the key terminology used in the field, offers important guidance on life in recovery, on real friendships, on spontaneity, creativity and enthusiasm.Dr Lefever also examines the future of addiction treatment, as well as its politics.

Book SynopsisVamık D. Volkan recounts the story of Judy, a woman attempting to solve her early life deprivations through non-chemical addiction. He provides an understanding of the psychology behind such an addiction and also illustrates pertinent therapeutic concepts and issues which arose in Judy’s case. These include built-in transference, twinning, interpretation, dreams, hoarding, acting out, and therapeutic play. By paying attention to such things, it is possible to gain a greater understanding of the internal worlds of patients with preoedipal deprivations, conflicts, and fixations. For this case, Dr Volkan undertook the role of supervisor to an analyst in training. The topics of the psychoanalytic supervisor–supervisee relationship and the supervisor’s emotional reactions toward the patient, whom the supervisor never meets, are rather ignored in the psychoanalytic literature. This book gives an open and frank overview of the relationship, reporting not only what was said but also what lay behind the words. Written in Dr Volkan’s characteristically accessible style, this book will be enjoyed equally by those under supervision as those providing it, and provides an excellent overview of work with addiction.Trade Review‘The author’s approach and style result in a clear explanation of the key points while maintaining interest for the reader. Book SynopsisAlcoholics Anonymous is one of the most significant self-help books of the twentieth century with an estimated thirty-seven million copies sold, translated into seventy languages. Released in 1939, the Big Book, as it is commonly known, has spawned a number of recovery communities around the world and remains a vibrant tool in introducing a plan of recovery from addiction in all its manifestations. It has been forty years since the last scholarly history of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), Ernie Kurtz’s Not God, published in 1979. Since then, all books that focus on one or more aspects of A.A. history have relied almost exclusively on the anecdotal stories told long after the fact by Bill Wilson and number of other early members, accounts that have proved at times to be inaccurate.Writing the Big Book is the result of eleven years of in-depth research into the formative years of A.A. Granted unprecedented access to the GSO archive, among others, the author reveals the inner workings of the early Fellowship, the conflicts, personalities, failures, and dispels myths of canonical texts such as Dr. Bob and the Good Old Timers, Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, and A Brief History of the Big Book.Relying, whenever possible, on primary, real-time documents, the author pulls various threads into a remarkably coherent narrative. While the story focuses primarily on the eighteen months between October 1937 (when a book was first proposed) and April, 1939 (when Alcoholics Anonymous was published), relevant events both before and shortly after those dates are fully incorporated. Across the span of these eighteen months, the wealth of available archival materials allows a week-by-week accounting of events, which is presented here through an amazing amount of previously unreported details in a comprehensive and compelling story.Trade ReviewBill Schaberg does a great service to the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous with his exhaustive examination of archival documents, separating myth from fact. The result is a clearer picture of the beginnings of A.A. and the development of the Big Book, along with a rich and compelling portrait of Bill W. Less myth produces a much better story.""- The Very Rev. Ward B. Ewing, D.D., Trustee and past Chair of the General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous, Retired Dean and President of the General Theological Seminary, New York;""Like a good suspense novel, this book captures the day-to-day struggles these few intrepid men encountered over those years""- Linda Farris Jurtz, Professor Emerita, Eastern Michigan University;""Schaberg's study of Alcoholics Anonymous is a true gift to A.A. and its membership, past, present, and future.""- Kevin Hanlon, co-creator of the documentary Bill W.

Book SynopsisIs every day a challenge as you wage your personal battle against addiction? If you’ve fallen into the addiction trap, you are not alone. It is estimated that one out of ten Americans is struggling with addiction. Author Timothy Wulff, M.S.W., is an addiction therapist who has spent more than a decade successfully treating individuals addicted to drugs and alcohol. To identify the source of addiction, Wulff focuses on beliefs about one’s self that develop early in life and that eventually obscure the strong and positive true self, increasing susceptibility to addiction. In The Addiction Battle, Wulff will help you discover where your greatest strengths are buried and teach you how to use their hidden power to overcome addiction. Wulff will teach you how to redefine the terms anger, selfishness, and troublemaking, and make them key tools in shaping your actions from a new healthy perspective: • Anger—It’s a powerful emotion that can be used constructively to protect yourself. • Selfishness—Healthy selfishness is good self-care.
