Book SynopsisAn explanation of how Peruvian migrants maintain meaningful social relations across borders. In this engaging volume, Ulla D. Berg examines the conditions under which Peruvians of rural and working-class origins leave the central highlands to migrate to the United States. Migrants often create new portrayals of themselves to overcome the class and racial biases that they had faced in their home country, as well as to control the images they share of themselves with others back home. Migrant videos, for example, which document migrants' lives for family back home, are often sanitized to avoid causing worry. By exploring the ways in which migration is mediated between the Peruvian Andes and the United States, this book makes a major contribution to understanding technology's role in fostering new forms of migrant sociality and subjectivity. It focuses on the forms of sociality and belonging that these mediations enable, adding to important anthropological debates about affect, subjectiTrade ReviewIn a historical moment when Latin American economic development and proliferating communication technologies are changing the stakes and forms of transitional migration,Mobile Selvesmodels the sophisticated ways scholars can integrate analyses of old and new media into their discussions of migration. * International Migration Review *Berg's analysis of Peruvian racial formations in new and transforming contexts of transnational mobility offers new insights about the diversity of migration strategies and experiences of racialization in receiving countries. Book SynopsisIn The Limits of Autobiography, Leigh Gilmore analyzes texts that depict trauma by combining elements of autobiography, fiction, biography, history, and theory in ways that challenge the constraints of autobiography. Astute and compelling readings of works by Michel Foucault, Louis Althusser, Dorothy Allison, Mikal Gilmore, Jamaica Kincaid, and Jeanette Winterson explore how each poses the questions How have I lived? and How will I live? in relation to the social and psychic forms within which trauma emerges. First published in 2001, this new edition of one of the foundational texts in trauma studies includes a new preface by the author that assesses the gravitational pull between life writing and trauma in the twenty-first century, a tension that continues to produce innovative and artful means of confronting kinship, violence, and self-representation.Trade ReviewLeigh Gilmore's The Limits of Autobiography is a fine addition to the body of work in trauma studies, and is highly recommended for all working in the mental health disciplines. The book is a rich cornucopia of literary and psychological analyses, theoretical sophistication, and interdisciplinary connectedness; these treasures can only be suggested here. * Metapsychology Online Review *Through theoretically nuanced, lucid, and insightful readings, Gilmore demonstrates the ability of narrative to transform trauma, to speak to a certain truth about the relationship between trauma and identity that goes beyond the exigencies of accuracy and objectivity that pertain to a juridical contact. Any reader interested in the myriad interpenetrations of violence, the law, identity, family, and life writing will find much to admire in this impressive study. * Biography *Gilmore offers astute and compelling commentaries in relation to the social and psychic forms within which selected autobiographers told their personal stories in literate and unconventional ways. American Psychological Association Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Older

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisInterpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Older Adults is the first clinical book on how to conduct Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) with persons 65 years of age and older. This growing cohort in the United States is expected to rise substantially after 2010, when the baby boom cohort enters that age category. To help clinicians learn effective care, the authors draw upon a wealth of experience to provide a comprehensive review of theory and research as well as practical guidance on clinical interventions. The authors review late life depression's presentation, health consequences, prevalence, interpersonal dynamics, clinical assessment, and treatment. Particularly valuable is the inclusion of actual clinical cases to illustrate the use of IPT in each phase of treatment. A case is made for why IPT is especially well suited for older persons by drawing upon theory and research on aging, the author's clinical experience in using IPT with older adults, and clinical research studies of IPT with the aged. By showing how the science of gerontology can best inform the practice of clinical geropsychology, the authors have written a book that will be an invaluable resource to any mental health professionals working with older adults.Table of ContentsForewordPrefaceAcknowledgements Gerontology: Exploring the Worlds of Older Adults Depression and Older Adults Interpersonal Psychotherapy: Origins, Structure, Research, and Applications Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Late-Life Depression The Initial Sessions Grief Interpersonal Role Disputes Role Transitions Interpersonal Deficits Termination Issues in Implementation of Interpersonal Psychotherapy With Older Adults Next Steps ResourcesReferencesIndexAbout the Authors

    Chelsea House Publishers Tourette Syndrome

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTourette syndrome is a disorder of the nervous system that involves involuntary vocal and motor tics - sudden, rapid, repeated sounds and movements. Tourette is usually first identified in children between the ages of 7 and 10, and boys are four times as likely as girls to have the disorder. The disorder can be mild or severe, with about 10 percent of Americans having a mild form, according to the National Institutes of Health. ""Tourette Syndrome"" explores the signs, symptoms, causes, and treatment of this bizarre and misunderstood neurological condition, which is often referred to as a 'tic' disorder. Following an overview of Tourette syndrome, the book details its history, symptoms, biological causes and triggers of tic episodes, epidemiology, and current forms of treatment. Ways in which parents and children cope with Tourette syndrome and its social stigma, as well as psychiatric conditions that are commonly associated with it, are also discussed. Chapters of this book include: Tourette Syndrome - An Overview; Signs and Symptoms of Tourette Syndrome; Demographics of Tourette Syndrome; Causes of Tourette Syndrome; Medical Treatments; Psychosocial and Behavioral Therapy for Tourette Syndrome; Psychiatric Disorders Commonly Associated with Tourette Syndrome; and, Coping Strategies for Tourette Syndrome Patients.

  • Alterity

    Michigan State University Press Alterity

Book SynopsisThrough the lens of mimetic theory, distinguished French psychiatrist Jean-Michel Oughourlian shows how to spot and address rivalry in our lives and become open to healthier, more genuine relationships. This important study demonstrates the toxic and pathogenic mechanisms at work in physical ailments and mental disturbances and reveals a common cause: alterity, the other. Oughourlian maintains that the real question in attempting to resolve issues of rivalry is not “What is your problem?” but rather “Who is your problem?” This type of discord with the other—be it a friend, colleague, or family member—becomes visible through generalized stress. This stress manifests in psychosomatic symptoms and may even contribute to the development of organic diseases. The most important factor in healing these maladies, then, is to recognize the other with whom we are in rivalry.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders: Inclusive Community for the 21st Century

Information Age Publishing Autism Spectrum Disorders: Inclusive Community for the 21st Century

Book SynopsisSleep problems are highly prevalent in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with evidence suggesting that majority of these children will experience a sleep problem at some point. Sleep problems in ASD are often chronic, and are associated with more severe child behaviour difficulties, anxiety, and ADHD symptoms. Mothers of children with sleep problems experience disturbed sleep, more stress and poorer psychological well being. Most commonly parents report their children to have difficulties with settling and night waking which are often amenable to behavioural treatment or melatonin. Nevertheless other sleep issues such as short night sleep, early waking, extended periods of night waking, early waking and circadian sleep disturbances are also reported and can be difficult to treat. While there is now a considerable body of evidence to support that those with ASD can experience significant and sometimes debilitating sleep difficulties, there is little research on the aetiology, prevention or intervention. This book brings together current research and clinical experience by experts from North America, UK, Europe and Australasia regarding the behavioural and medical factors that might underlie these prevalent sleep difficulties, as well as both medical and behavioural approaches to treatment. The book has three major section Aetiological factors and Diagnosis which covers the impacts of ASD on sleep, comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions, and diagnostic tools; Impact of Sleep Problems covering both the child and their family; and Treatment, including pharmacological and behavioural treatments, and the usefulness or otherwise of alternative treatments. This book will be useful for clinicians and researchers with an interest in ASD and paediatric sleep.

  • A Language for Psychosis

John Wiley & Sons Inc A Language for Psychosis

Book SynopsisThe purpose of the Whurr series in Psychoanalysis edited by Peter Fonagy and Mary Target of University College London, is to publish clinical and research based texts of academic excellence in the field. Each title makes a significant contribution and the series is open-ended. The readership is academic and graduate students in psychoanalysis, together with clinical practitioners, in Europe, North America and indeed worldwide. This book brings together a number of international writers who are concerned with understanding and treating psychoses. The orientation of the book is psychoanalytic, but it is also cognisant of the need for a multi-disciplinary approach to these disorders for which there remains no comprehensive cure. One of the greatest obstacles clinicians and patients face lies less in our ignorance than in failure by mental health services to integrate existing knowledge into workable treatment plans. Too often clinical disciplines (psychiatry, psychoanalysis, clinical psychology, neuropsychology, nursing etc.) work separately rather than together, employing languages that are mutually incomprehensible. As a result, patients are unlikely to have their different needs properly met. At the heart of the multi-disciplinary approach lies the therapeutic relationship between patient and psychoanalyst, psychodynamically-minded psychiatrist or psychotherapist. Detailed clinical cases are presented together with contemporary conceptualisations of psychotic states.Table of ContentsA Rationale for The Psychoanalytically Informed Psychotherapy of schizophrenia and Other Psychoses. • The Plight of Stigmatized Groups in Organizations

Information Age Publishing The Plight of Stigmatized Groups in Organizations

Book SynopsisPeople are often stigmatized by virtue of their status on such dimensions as race, ethnicity, gender, age, weight, disability, or sexual orientation, and this book deals with the plight of those who are stigmatized in organizations. For example, they often experience prejudice, unfair discrimination, mistreatment, and exclusion from organizations and society as a whole. As a result, there has been an increased interest in developing ways to decrease the negative experiences of stigmatized groups, increase their inclusion in organizations, and ensure that they have the opportunity to enjoy a satisfying work life. Despite an increased interest in decreasing the negative experiences of stigmatized groups, most of the studies in human resource management (HR) and organizational behavior (OB) have focused on only a subset of these individuals including African-Americans, women, older workers, and people with physical disabilities (Dipboye & Colella, 2005). A number of other stigmatized groups have been practically neglected by organizational research including people with psychological disabilities (e.g., anxiety and depressive disorders), Asian Americans, immigrants, those with foreign accents, individuals with different sexual orientations, people who are single in organizations, women entering the corporate suite, and adolescents. Thus, the primary purposes of this issue of Research in HRM is to consider research on The plight of stigmatized groups in organizations, and foster research on those groups who have been neglected in organizational research. In view of these arguments, this issue (a) presents a brief review of the research on the plight of several stigmatized groups in organizations (e.g., Asian Americans, those with psychological disabilities, people who are single, women entering the corporate suite, and individuals with different sexual orientations, (b) identify needed research on these stigmatized groups, © offer directions for future research, and (c) consider the implications for practice that can decrease the negative experiences of these group members, and facilitate their inclusion in organizational settings.

Some of us even go beyond tangible metrics to internalize stress and fear of missing the--ruminating over presentations that didn't go according to plan, imagining worst-case scenarios, or standing frozen, paralyzed by perfectionism. But hypervigilance, worry, and catastrophizing don't have to hold you back at work. When channeled thoughtfully, anxiety can motivate us to be more resourceful, productive, and creative. It can break down barriers and create new bonds with our colleagues. Managing Your Anxiety will help you distinguish stress from anxiety, learn what anxiety looks like for you, understand it, and respond to it with self-compassion at work. With the latest psychological research and practical advice from leading experts, you'll learn how to recognize how your anxiety manifests itself; manage it in small day-to-day moments and in more challenging times; experiment and find a mindfulness practice that works for you; and build a support infrastructure to help you manage your anxiety over the long term.
