  • From Sexual Deviance to Abuse: Etiology,

Nova Science Publishers Inc From Sexual Deviance to Abuse: Etiology,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe concept of sexual deviance refers to the nature of sexual behavior that is nonconforming with societal norms or expectations, is maladaptive and interferes with the individual''s functioning. Sexual deviance is also often perceived as harmful or even dangerous. In most cases, it manifests through the use of force, sexual focus on children or other anomalous activities and targets. It encompasses a vast range of atypical or aberrant sexual behaviors that may or may not be formalised into a law. The author of this book adheres to the theory that although sexual violence may be motivated by opportunistic factors, the common denominator in most instances of sexual abuse is sexual deviance. The results of the authors'' research indicate that most male and female subjects interpret sexual deviance as a multi-causal phenomenon; however, juvenile sex offenders are more likely to externalise these causes rather than attribute them to internal factors. This book is divided into three major parts. The first part focuses on critical review of different theories of etiology of sexual deviance, sex offender characteristics and treatment implications; the second explores attribution of sexually abnormal behavior and its measurement; and the third describes the findings of the study and their relevance to the treatment of sexual abusers.

Book SynopsisSelf-efficacy and self-compassion are psychological skills that form the basis for resilience, success, and overall quality of life, and as such understanding how best to implement these skills is essential for well-being. This volume includes six chapters that explore the concepts of self-efficacy and self-compassion from several perspectives. Chapter One investigates the predictive value of pre-academic self-efficacy for academic self-efficacy six months into the Danish teacher education program. Chapter Two provides a theoretical foundation for educator self-efficacy and current empirical evidence exploring self-efficacy of educators who are working in schools implementing tiered systems. Chapter Three examines reciprocal relations between academic self-efficacy and elements of achievement in math, with persistence as a mediator. Chapter Four synthesizes and examines research evidence on the relationship between parental self-compassion and parents' mental health, analyses the role of parental self-compassion in parenting practices, and investigates the effects of parents' self-compassion on children's outcomes. Chapter Five reviews recent findings concerning self-compassion from a trait/state perspective based on a development schema theory combined with a state of mind approach. Lastly, Chapter Six explores self-efficacy and its association with demographic characteristics in Greek families of university students with or without members with special educational needs and disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.Table of ContentsPreface; Predicting Student Teachers Academic Learning Self-Efficacy at the Second Semester from Their Pre-Academic Learning Self-Efficacy; Educator Self-Efficacy in Tiered Systems: Theory and Practice; Mediated Relationships between Academic Self-Efficacy and Characteristics of Math Performance Differences between Boys and Girls and Students from Immigrant and Non-Immigrant Backgrounds; Self-Compassion and Parenting; A State-Trait Approach to Self-Compassion: Is It a Schema or a State of Mind?; Self-Efficacy and Demographics of Greek Families with and without Members with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities during the COVID-19 Pandemic; Index.

"Pineapple Express" explores moods, medications and side effects, capturing the flatness of depression while making the language sing. It also explores the notion of mid-life, in all its manifestations: physical changes, psychological upheaval, the notion of becoming "invisible," and mortality.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book, Paul Campos argues that the American worship of law and legality can at times become so pathological that it comes to resemble a type of legal madness, or Jurismania. Campos offers an intensely critical look at the role of law and legal reason in American society, and concludes that much of what is called the rule of law resembles a culturally sanctioned form of obsessive-compulsive behaviour.Trade ReviewJurismania provides a sharp reminder that the law cannot solve all problems, and serves up a chilling vision of a demented world in which regulation is all-pervasive and where respect for the law is lost through its misuse. It is a cautionary tale upon which we could do worse than reflect. * Roderick Munday, Justice of the Peace Volume 163 *

Book SynopsisHow can we better understand and treat those suffering from schizophrenia and manic-depressive illnesses? This important new book takes us into the world of those suffering from such disorders. Using self descriptions, its emphasis is not on how mental health professionals view sufferers, but on how the patients themselves experience their disorder. Central to the book is the idea that schizophrenic persons live like disembodied spirits or deanimated bodies. As disembodied spirits, they feel like abstract entities which contemplate their own existence and the world from outside. As deanimated bodies, schizophrenic people feel deprived of the possibility of living personal experiences - perceptions, thoughts, emotions - as their own. Book SynopsisPersecutory delusions, the unfounded beliefs that others intend harm to the individual, are a major psychiatric problem. They are a common feature of severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, delusional disorder and bipolar disorder, often lead to admission to psychiatric hospital, and are a cause of considerable distress to patients and carers. However, increasingly it is recognised that persecutory delusions reflect the severe end of a spectrum of paranoia, which also encompasses beliefs and worries about threats from others that are common in the general population. In the last ten years an increasing number of researchers and clinicians have focussed on explaining paranoid experience in both clinical and non-clinical populations, with fascinating results. This recent research is presented for the first time as a book. In this landmark publication, the three major authorities in the field bring together the current knowledge about the assessment, understanding, and treatment ofTrade Review'Persecutory Delusions is an outstanding book that provides a unique update on the assessment, biological and psychological processes, and treatment of this important clinical phenomenon. Freeman, Bentall, and Garety, all seasoned clinicians who have also made valuable contributions to theories of delusions, have assembled world experts on this topic for the first time in this welcomed volume. The state-of-the-art summary of research, theory, and clinical practice related to persecutory delusions make this book a critical resource for anyone seeking to understand or treat psychosis.' * Professor Kim T. Mueser, Dartmouth Medical School *' Delusions have long been known to psychiatry - but have largely been considered a subset of 'psychosis'. However, over the last decade a range of scientists, psychologists, phenomenologists, pharmacologists, and imagers have been studying delusions in their own right, and social epidemiologists and geneticists have been looking for their causes in clinical populations and wider society. This book is the first to pull together these different perspectives under one cover. For scientists and practitioners who study and treat psychosis this is a remarkable resource. This will be a "go to" reference book for developing a comprehensive understanding of delusions.' * Professor Shitij Kapur, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London *Table of ContentsASSESSMENT, EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PROGNOSIS; THEORY - PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESSES; THEORY - BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES; TREATMENT - OVERVIEWS; TREATMENT - THERAPY EXAMPLES

Book SynopsisOvereating and obesity are on the rise. Despite public health warnings, availability of diet books and programs, and the stigma associated with obesity, many people find it difficult to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. While there are many books on the topic of caloric or need-based eating, obesity and overeating can also result from eating that is not driven by hunger. Recent research found that excess food intake is largely driven by the palatability of food and the pleasure derived from eating. Hedonic Eating: How the Pleasure of Food Affects Our Brain and Behavior will appeal to scientists, medical doctors, psychologists, counselors and students taking specialized courses that cover appetite. It will also appeal to the general public intersted in learning more about topics, including brain reward-related mechanisms associated with food intake, eating behaviors resulting from these changes in the brain, obesity, and overeating, and science-based approaches to combat the cTable of ContentsForward ; Preface ; Acknowledgements ; Chapter 1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisBorderline personality disorder (BPD) is a potentially severely debilitating psychiatric diagnosis that may affect up to 2% of the general population. Hallmarks of BPD include impulsivity, emotional instability, and poor self-image, and those with BPD have increased risk for self-harm and suicide.Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) brings together research findings and information on implementation and best practices for a group treatment program for outpatients with BPD. A five-month long program easily learned and delivered by therapists from a wide range of theoretical orientations, STEPPS combines cognitive behavioral therapy, emotion management and behavioral skills training, and psychoeducation with a systems component that involves professional care providers, family, friends, and significant others of persons with BPD. The book provides a detailed description of the program, reviews the body of evidence supporting its use and implementation, and describes its dissemination worldwide and in different settings. Empirical data show that STEPPS is effective and produces clinically important improvement in mood and behavior, while reducing health care utilization. Unique among programs for BPD, STEPPS has been exhaustively studied in correctional systems (both prisons and community corrections), where it is shown to be as effective as in community settings. This volume will be a valuable guide to those in psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, and the counseling professions who treat people with BPD.Trade Review"Psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder is now known to be effective. But it tends to be lengthy, expensive, and unavailable. STEPPS provides a brief, cost-effective package that should be a default option for treating these difficult patients. This book, which describes the concepts, methods, and research support behind STEPPS, is timely and welcome."--Joel Paris, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, McGill University, and author, A Concise Guide to Personality Disorders "This book brings together the leading clinicians and researchers working with STEPPS across the globe and provides an essential guide to implementing a much needed front-line intervention for borderline personality disorder."--Carla Sharp, PhD, Professor and Director of Clinical Training, Department of Psychology, The University of Houston "Dr. Black and Ms. Blum have edited a very thoughtful and informative book on the STEPPS program for people with borderline personality disorder. STEPPS is a very well designed and structured treatment, which could help explain why it has been rapidly expanding in its global reach. This book reviews the compelling evidence base for the program and makes an important contribution to the care of these challenging patients."--S. Charles Schulz, MD, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Minnesota Medical School "The development of STEPPS has been a godsend. Even in the age of evidence-based treatments for borderline personality disorder, the large majority of sufferers have no access to adequate care. With its intelligent focus on psychoeducation in a group setting, STEPPS has been able to fill in the gap in many areas. This book will extend that reach. STEPPS fulfills the critical public need of providing a basic treatment for BPD that is sufficient for some patients and the first step in a longer trajectory for others."--Frank E. Yeomans, MD, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, and Director of Training, Personality Disorders Institute, Weill Medical College of Cornell University "In treating borderline personality disorder in community mental health settings, it is vital that evidence-based protocols for treating suicidal behavior be utilized. For treatment settings unable to implement DBT, strong consideration should be given to implementing STEPPS. For this reason, this book is recommended for those who work for or administer community mental health centers, as well mental health programs in other settings, such as correctional settings or group practices." --PsycCRITIQUESTable of ContentsForeword by John Livesley Preface About the Editors Contributors Chapter 1 - Overview of STEPPS: History and Implementation Nancee Blum, Don St. John, Bruce Pfohl, and Donald W. Book SynopsisAsperger''s Syndrome, often characterized as a form of high-functioning autism, is a poorly defined and little-understood neurological disorder. The people who suffer from the condition are usually highly intelligent, and as often as not capable of extraordinary feats of memory, calculation, and musicianship. In this wide-ranging report on Asperger''s, Lawrence Osborne introduces us to those who suffer from the syndrome and to those who care for them as patients and as family. And, more importantly, he speculates on how, with our need to medicate and categorize every conceivable mental state, we are perhaps adding to their isolation, their sense of alienation from the normal. -This is a book about the condition, and the culture surrounding Asperger''s Syndrome as opposed to a guide about how to care for your child with Aspergers. -Examines American culture and the positive and Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: "Osborne uses his considerable journalistic talents to interview a number of well-known … and some not-so-well-known people diagnosed with an enigmatic disorder known as Asperger’s Syndrome. … Recommended for readers at all levels." While the UK isn’t showing any signs of jumping on the Asperger’s bandwagon … books and articles on the subject makes it hard to ignore. Book SynopsisNew York Times and Wall Street Journal bestsellerA step-by-step plan clinically proven to break the cycle of worry and fear that drives anxiety and addictive habitsWe are living through one of the most anxious periods any of us can remember. Whether facing issues as public as a pandemic or as personal as having kids at home and fighting the urge to reach for the wine bottle every night, we are feeling overwhelmed and out of control. But in this timely book, Judson Brewer explains how to uproot anxiety at its source using brain-based techniques and small hacks accessible to anyone. We think of anxiety as everything from mild unease to full-blown panic. But it's also what drives the addictive behaviors and bad habits we use to cope (e.g. stress eating, procrastination, doom scrolling and social media). Plus, anxiety lives in a part of the brain that resists rational thought. So we get stuck in anxiety habit loops that we can't think our way out of or use willpower to overcome. Dr. Brewer teaches us to map our brains to discover our triggers, defuse them with the simple but powerful practice of curiosity, and to train our brains using mindfulness and other practices that his lab has proven can work.Distilling more than 20 years of research and hands-on work with thousands of patients, including Olympic athletes and coaches, and leaders in government and business, Dr. Brewer has created a clear, solution-oriented program that anyone can use to feel better - no matter how anxious they feel.
