  • A Language for Psychosis

John Wiley & Sons Inc A Language for Psychosis

Book SynopsisThe purpose of the Whurr series in Psychoanalysis edited by Peter Fonagy and Mary Target of University College London, is to publish clinical and research based texts of academic excellence in the field. Each title makes a significant contribution and the series is open-ended. The readership is academic and graduate students in psychoanalysis, together with clinical practitioners, in Europe, North America and indeed worldwide. This book brings together a number of international writers who are concerned with understanding and treating psychoses. The orientation of the book is psychoanalytic, but it is also cognisant of the need for a multi-disciplinary approach to these disorders for which there remains no comprehensive cure. One of the greatest obstacles clinicians and patients face lies less in our ignorance than in failure by mental health services to integrate existing knowledge into workable treatment plans. Too often clinical disciplines (psychiatry, psychoanalysis, clinical psychology, neuropsychology, nursing etc.) work separately rather than together, employing languages that are mutually incomprehensible. As a result, patients are unlikely to have their different needs properly met. At the heart of the multi-disciplinary approach lies the therapeutic relationship between patient and psychoanalyst, psychodynamically-minded psychiatrist or psychotherapist. Detailed clinical cases are presented together with contemporary conceptualisations of psychotic states.Table of ContentsA Rationale for The Psychoanalytically Informed Psychotherapy of schizophrenia and Other Psychoses. • The Plight of Stigmatized Groups in Organizations

Information Age Publishing The Plight of Stigmatized Groups in Organizations

Book SynopsisPeople are often stigmatized by virtue of their status on such dimensions as race, ethnicity, gender, age, weight, disability, or sexual orientation, and this book deals with the plight of those who are stigmatized in organizations. For example, they often experience prejudice, unfair discrimination, mistreatment, and exclusion from organizations and society as a whole. As a result, there has been an increased interest in developing ways to decrease the negative experiences of stigmatized groups, increase their inclusion in organizations, and ensure that they have the opportunity to enjoy a satisfying work life. Despite an increased interest in decreasing the negative experiences of stigmatized groups, most of the studies in human resource management (HR) and organizational behavior (OB) have focused on only a subset of these individuals including African-Americans, women, older workers, and people with physical disabilities (Dipboye & Colella, 2005). A number of other stigmatized groups have been practically neglected by organizational research including people with psychological disabilities (e.g., anxiety and depressive disorders), Asian Americans, immigrants, those with foreign accents, individuals with different sexual orientations, people who are single in organizations, women entering the corporate suite, and adolescents. Thus, the primary purposes of this issue of Research in HRM is to consider research on The plight of stigmatized groups in organizations, and foster research on those groups who have been neglected in organizational research. In view of these arguments, this issue (a) presents a brief review of the research on the plight of several stigmatized groups in organizations (e.g., Asian Americans, those with psychological disabilities, people who are single, women entering the corporate suite, and individuals with different sexual orientations, (b) identify needed research on these stigmatized groups, © offer directions for future research, and (c) consider the implications for practice that can decrease the negative experiences of these group members, and facilitate their inclusion in organizational settings.

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Trauma and Its Impacts on Temporal Experience

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis unique text develops an original theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between trauma and time by combining phenomenological and psychoanalytical traditions. Moving beyond Western psychoanalytical and phenomenological traditions, this volume presents new perspectives on the assessment and treatment of trauma patients. Powerfully illustrating how the temporal dimension of a patient's symptoms has until now been overlooked, the text presents a wealth of research literature to deepen our understanding of how trauma disrupts individual temporal experience. Ultimately, the resulting phenomena that occur (including dissociation and cognitive distortions) position time as a transdiagnostic psychological dimension, closely connected to the subject's sense of self. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in psychoanalysis, phenomenology, and trauma and dissociation studies more broadly. Those specifically interTrade Review"While Mezzalira’s book is only 156 pages, it is an extensive compilation and summary of theory and research, past and present, on time and trauma. She includes perspectives from philosophy (especially phenomenology), psychoanalysis, neuroscience, and cognitive science. Book SynopsisTreating Self-Destructive Behaviors in Trauma Survivors, 2nd ed, is a book for clinicians who specialize in helping trauma survivors and, during the course of treatment, find themselves unexpectedly confronted with client disclosures of self-destructive behaviors, including self-mutilation and other manifestations of deliberately hurting the body such as bingeing, purging, starving, substance abuse and other addictive behaviors. Arguing that standard safety contracts are not effective, renowned clinician Lisa Ferentz introduces viable treatment alternatives, assessment tools, and new ways of understanding self-destructive behavior using a strengths-based approach that distinguishes between the experimental non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) that some teenagers occasionally engage in and the self-destructive behaviors that are repetitive and chronic. In the new edition, many of the treatment strategies are cross referenced to a useful workbook, giving therapists and clients conTrade Review"Self-destructive behaviors of all kinds can confuse even the therapists involved with such clients, bringing out the desire to force them to stop. Fortunately, Lisa Ferentz’s original book helped reverse that trend, and this well-written and well-researched second edition goes even further in providing a non-pathologized and empowering understanding approach to these behaviors."—Richard Schwartz, PhD, faculty member at Harvard Medical School."In this new edition of Treating Self-Destructive Behaviors in Trauma Survivors, Lisa Ferentz offers solid support to clinicians, using a solution- and strengths-focused approach to treating challenging trauma-based behaviors. She offers useful and effective links between this book and Letting Go of Self-Destructive Behaviors, her workbook for clients, and together these two books give both clinicians and clients a dynamic and effective way to collaborate throughout the healing process. Lisa’s emphasis on self-compassion is an essential element of healing into wholeness and I appreciate her deep understanding of its central place in the healing process—for both clinicians and clients." —Nancy J. Napier, LMFT, author of Getting Through the Day: Strategies for Adults Hurt As Children and Recreating Your Self: Building Self-Esteem Through Imaging and Self-Hypnosis"In the second edition of Treating Self-Destructive Behavior, Lisa Ferentz again sets the gold standard for books on this topic. Replacing pathologizing models with a compassionate, neuroscientifically informed approach, she offers a treatment paradigm that integrates cutting-edge approaches to trauma with down-to-earth, practical interventions that are attentive to risk management yet also relational and validating." —Janina Fisher, PhD, coauthor of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Interventions for Trauma and Attachment and Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma SurvivorsTable of ContentsPreface Part I: It Makes Sense Given Where They’ve Come From. 1. HarperCollins Publishers Inc The Drop How the Most Addictive Sport Can Help Us

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade Review“This book is brilliant. You’ve never seen the gorgonian loops and layers of addiction illuminated so clearly and originally.” — WILLIAM FINNEGAN, New York Times bestselling and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Barbarian Days “Thad Ziolkowski explores the scientific and spiritual depths of the relationship between addiction and surfing—a sport that’s often portrayed as shallow, but in truth is anything but. As in the ocean itself, the sunlit waves coexist with the profound, and darker, layers beneath. The stories Ziolkowski tells—both his own and those of other surfers—are testaments to how there is much to be learned in the deeper waters, but only if you make it back to the surface. The Drop is a searingly personal, timely, and beautifully written book.” — SUSAN CASEY, bestselling author of The Wave “I can’t even swim in the ocean without some dread and fear, so surfing is unfathomable to me; with drugs (and their delights and horrors) I’m somewhat more familiar. Thad Ziolkowski has masterfully woven these two subjects together with his own singular but familiar American dude’s story. The Drop is a frank, fascinating, strange, wise, beautiful book.” — KURT ANDERSEN, New York Times bestselling author of Evil Geniuses “In The Drop, both a vivid personal memoir and a thoughtful exploration of compulsive behavior, Thad Ziolkowski finds an unlikely but sensible commonality between the drives underlying the fervor of surfing and the siren call of addictions. He recognizes the traumatic bases of both yet points to how the sport can ultimately be a force for healing.” — GABOR MATÉ, M.D., author of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts “A poetic memoir of addiction, but also a beautiful reflection on the lure of surfing, which (as practitioners know) can be addictive. Ziolkowski examines the seedy, tweaky underside of the surf world as well as its logical upshot: surfing as a natural hook, which can show an addict the way back to sanity and light.” — MICHAEL SCOTT MOORE, author of The Desert and the Sea “What does a surfer do after riding a twenty-five-foot wave, or winning a world title, or getting barreled at Pipeline for a decade? Ah, solving that question—to paraphrase Philip Larkin—brings the rehab staff and the EMT crew running over the beaches in their long white coats. Through a brilliant plumbing of surfing’s dark side, Ziolkowski holds a light up to the bodies taken by addiction, while also showing a way out that exists within surfing itself.” — JAMIE BRISICK, author of Becoming Westerly and Have Board, Will Travel "Intimate take on the subject...vivid writing and evocative insights about the dopamine rush that the sport and drugs share." — Publishers Weekly "Thad Ziolkowski's ambitious new pseudo-memoir is ostensibly a book about surfing, and on a sentence level it contains some truly magical writing in the vein of Barbarian Days…But it's also an addiction memoir that isn't afraid to explore the liminal spaces where the endorphin rush of the sport meets our darker compulsions. In less capable hands the wheels would squeak right off. But when Ziolkowski is on, it's hard not to feel what he's feeling. It's a science book about the things we tether ourselves to, made spiritual." — GQ

Book SynopsisA psychologist confronts our pervasive misunderstanding of anxiety and presents a powerful new framework for reimagining and reclaiming the confounding emotion as the advantage it evolved to be.We taught people that anxiety is dangerous and damaging, and that the solution to its pain is to eradicate it like we do any disease?prevent it, avoid it, and stamp it out at all costs. Yet cutting-edge therapies, hundreds of self-help books, and a panoply of medications have failed to keep debilitating anxiety at bay. A third of us will struggle with anxiety disorders in our lifetime and rates in children and adults continue to skyrocket. That?s because the anxiety-as-disease story is false?and it?s harming us.In this radical reinterpretation, Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary argues that anxiety is an evolved advantage that protects us and strengthens our creative and productive powers.Although it?s related to stress and fear, it?s uniquely valuable?allowing us to imagine the uncertain future and compelling us to make that future better. That?s why anxiety is inextricably linked to hope.By distilling the latest research in psychology and neuroscience, including her own, combining it with real-world stories and personal narrative, Dennis-Tiwary shows how we can acknowledge the discomfort of anxiety and see it as a tool, rather than something to be feared and reviled. Detailing the terrible cost of our misunderstanding of anxiety, while celebrating the lives of people who harness it to their advantage, she argues that we can?and must?learn to be anxious in the right way.Future Tenseblazes the way for a paradigm shift in how we relate to and understand anxiety in our day-to-day lives?a fresh set of beliefs and insights that allow us to explore and leverage even very distressing anxiety rather than to be overwhelmed by it. Through this new prism of thinking, even anxiety disorders can be alleviated. Achieving a new mindset willnotfix anxiety itself?because the emotion of anxiety is not broken; the way we cope with it is. By challenging our long-held assumptions about anxiety, this book provides a concrete framework for how to reclaim it for what it has always been?a gift rather than a curse, and a source of inner strength, joy, and ingenuity.

Book SynopsisA groundbreaking exploration of the ways in which the intelligence and abilities of children and young adults with autism are often overlooked and misjudged, with tried-and-true interventions that can be used to help them reach their full potential. Our limited and often biased view of what’s considered “normal” often prevents us from recognizing the gifts and brilliance of those who don’t fit a specific mold. Too often we don’t explore and take advantage of the far-reaching gifts and potential of those diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum or neurodiverse. Dr. Lynn Kern Koegel has had vast experience researching Autism Spectrum Disorders—ASD—and working with autistic people of all ages. She has repeatedly witnessed firsthand evidence of great intelligence that hasn’t yet been nurtured or realized. In Hidden Brilliance, Dr. Koegel and writer Claire LaZebnik explore the ways in which the brillia

Book SynopsisAt the age of twenty-four, in 1913, Adolf Hitler was eking out a living as a painter of pictures for tourists in Munich. Nothing marked him in any way as exceptional, but he did possess certain distinguishing characteristics: a capacity to hate, an inability to accept criticism, and a massive overconfidence in his own abilities. He was a socially and emotionally inadequate individual without direction, from whence came a sense of personal mission that would transform these weaknesses and liabilities into strengths—certainties that would provide him not only with a sense of identity, but of purpose in a communal enterprise. This is the focus of Laurence Rees’s social, psychological, and historical investigation into a personality that would end up articulating the hopes and dreams of millions of Germans.(With 16 pages of black-and-white illustrations)
