However, Michelangelo's rapid artistic rise, widespread adoration, and elevation to the status of the norm and an unsurpassable authority in art triggered criticism as early as the Cinquecento. One of the critical art techniques used at the time to delegitimize norms, disparage competitors, and vituperatively discredit works of art was image parody. Book SynopsisKünstler waren seit der Renaissance auf einen Kanon vorbildhafter Motive und Formen verpflichtet, was immer wieder Gegenreaktionen auslöste. Insbesondere bildparodistische Verfahren eigneten sich für eine kunstimmanente Kritik an Autoritäten und ästhetischen Normen sowie zur Formulierung von Autonomie- und Statusansprüchen. Obwohl derartige Gegenbilder in der frühen Neuzeit überaus präsent waren, sind sie bisher nur selten in den Blick der Forschung geraten. Diesem Desiderat widmet sich der vorliegende Band. Aus kunsthistorischer, literaturwissenschaftlicher und bildwissenschaftlicher Perspektive leisten die Fallstudien einen Beitrag zum Verständnis vormoderner Bildparodien, indem sie deren Einsatz in Modernisierungsdiskursen und in konkreten Konfliktsituationen beleuchten.
