Multilingualism was, however, certainly rather common already, if not especially, in the premodern world. For some time now, research has started to explore this issue through a number of specialized studies. The present volume continues with the investigation of multilingualism through a collection of case studies focusing on important examples in medieval and early modern societies, that is, in linguistic and cultural contact zones, such as England, Spain, the Holy Land, but also the New World. As all contributors confirm, the numerous cases of multilingualism discussed here indicate strongly that the premodern period knew considerably less barriers between people of different social classes, cultural background, and religious orientation. But we also have to acknowledge that already then human communication could fail because of linguistic hurdles which prevented mutual understanding in religious and cultural terms.

De Gruyter Voß’ Übersetzungssprache: Voraussetzungen, Kontexte, Folgen
Johann Heinrich Voß war seinen Zeitgenossen zunächst als Verfasser idyllischer Gedichte und scharfer Polemiken bekannt. In die Literaturgeschichte ging er aber vor allem als Übersetzer ein. Er übertrug u. a. Vergil, Horaz und Theokrit im Versmaß der Originale und trat mit einem deutschen Shakespeare in Konkurrenz zur Schlegel-Tieck'schen Shakespeare-Ausgabe. Epochale Bedeutung erlangte er mit seiner Homer-Übersetzung. Als 1793 die vierbändige Gesamtausgabe der Homerischen Epen erschien, war das Publikum allerdings zunächst befremdet: Nie zuvor hatte ein Übersetzer versucht, sich derart eng an die griechische Vorlage anzulehnen. Erst mit späteren Auflagen erlangte die Übersetzung den kanonischen Status, den sie bis heute behauptet. Dennoch blieb das Urteil über Voß stets gespalten: Für seine sprachschöpferische Leistung wurde er bewundert, für seine Pedanterie geschmäht.Der aus einer Tagung hervorgegangene Band versteht sich als Beitrag zu einer differenzierteren Würdigung Voß' innerhalb der Literatur- und Übersetzungsgeschichte. Untersucht werden die Genese der Voß'schen Übersetzungssprache, die Aufnahme der Übersetzungen bei zeitgenössischen Autoren und ihre Wirkung im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf der Problematik der Nachahmung antiker Verse, die in der Forschung nach wie vor nicht ausreichend berücksichtigt wird. Ergänzt wird der Band durch eine Edition des Briefwechsels zwischen Heinrich Voß (dem Sohn) und Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger, der u. a. Einblick in die Entstehung von Solgers bedeutender Sophokles-Übersetzung und in das Verhältnis des jüngeren Voß zu Goethe gibt.

Anders als lange vermutet, ging es den Auftraggebern dieser Sarkophage nicht in erster Linie um den glorreichen Sieg der Griechen, sondern um das grausame Todesschicksal der schönen Kriegerinnen, das paradigmatisch auf den eigenen Trauerfall bezogen werden sollte. Die Studie zu den stadtrömischen Amazonensarkophagen macht das umfangreiche, zwischen 120 und 320 n. Chr. entstandene Bildcorpus erstmals als Quelle für die Diskussion wesentlicher Aspekte der Körpergeschichte, der Geschichte der Ästhetisierung von Gewalt und der Medialisierung von Affekten nutzbar. Die Analyse dieser Themenfelder gibt Aufschluss über einschneidende mentalitätsgeschichtliche Veränderungen im Umgang mit Trauer und Tod am Übergang von der Hohen Kaiserzeit zur Spätantike. Grundlage der Untersuchung bildet die Erörterung grundsätzlicher Fragen zu Verwendungsmodi und Aktualisierungsstrategien mythologischer Bilder in der römischen Sepulkralkunst. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf den deutlich ausgeprägten, in jüngeren Studien jedoch oft vernachlässigten narrativen Qualitäten der dramatischen Mythenbilder.

This monograph re-evaluates the literary development of 2 Kings 9–10 within the context of the Deuteronomistic History. This undertaking opens with a thorough text and literary critical examination of the pericope, arriving at the conclusion that the narrative of 2 Kings 9–10 represents neither an insertion into the Deuteronomistic corpus, nor an independent literary tradition. Rather, when considering the Greek textual traditions of the biblical narrative (most especially B and Ant.), one can appreciate the narrative of Jehu’s revolution within the literary context of an extensive politically motivated narrative about the Israelite monarchy covering the period from the reigns of Jeroboam I to Jeroboam II. The identification of this pro-Jehuide source within the book of Kings enables a reliable dating into the 8th century BCE for much of the material in Kings focusing on the Northern Kingdom. Comparing this biblical narrative to other (mostly Mesopotamian and Syrian) texts relevant to Israelite history of the period advances the discourse about the veracity of the biblical narrative when contrasted with extrabiblical traditions and permits the plausible reconstruction of Israelite history spanning the 8th and 9th centuries BCE.

In the first part the basic facts about spaces of functions of bounded variation and related spaces are collected, the main ideas which are useful in studying their properties are presented, and a comparison of their importance and suitability for applications is provided, with a particular emphasis on illustrative examples and counterexamples. The second part is concerned with (sometimes quite surprising) properties of nonlinear composition and superposition operators in such spaces. Moreover, relations with Riemann-Stieltjes integrals, convergence tests for Fourier series, and applications to nonlinear integral equations are discussed.
