University of Exeter Press La Soeur
La Soeur (1645) is one of the liveliest and most successful comedies by Jean Rotrou. It is an ingenious adaptation, long unidentified, of an Italian comedy, La Sorella (c.1584), by the polygraph Giambattista Della Porta; sometimes it remains close to the original text, at other times it is bold in eliminating superfluous material and in imparting a convincingly French flavour to the dialogue. The introduction to this new edition assesses the originality of Rotrou’s adaptation. The notes are devoted above all to linguistic questions and to the many exotic allusions found in the text.

Cornell University Press Don Isaac Abravanel: Statesman and Philosopher
Don Isaac Abravanel (1437–1508) was a major historical figure during the waning of the Middle Ages. Statesman, diplomat, courtier, and financier, he was, at the same time, a scholar of encyclopedic learning, a philosopher, an exegete, a prolific author, a mystic, and an apocalyptist. In Abravanel, B. Netanyahu suggests, two long lines of tradition met and concluded: that of medieval Jewish statesmen and that of medieval Jewish philosophers. In what is both a biography and an exploration of Abravanel's thought and influence, Netanyahu describes how Abravanel illuminated the grave crisis and profound transformation experienced by the Jewish people after the Spanish expulsion. First published in 1953, Don Isaac Abravanel has been out of print for several years. This new edition includes revisions in the text, notes, and bibliography.

Peeters Publishers The Weeping Rock: Revisiting Niobe through 'Paragone', 'Pathosformel' and Petrification
Publius Ovid (43 BC-17/18 AD) describes in his Metamorphoses Niobe’s transformation into a weeping rock. Niobe’s transformation incorporates the form and matter of the medium of sculpture. According to the humanist paragone debate, painting and sculpture struggle to be the medium with the highest qualities of virtuosity. Aby Warburg (1866-1929) refers to the Niobe motif’s Nachleben in his Tafel 5: Beraubte Mutter. (Niobe, Flucht und Schrecken). This displays the images of both the bereaved mother (Niobe) and the murderous mother (Medea). The montage also introduces the theme of the descent to the underworld. It becomes clear how the cluster of motifs around the figure of Niobe - hybris, lamentatio and the chthonic substrate - functions as a direct entry to a bipolar hermeneutics of the visual medium: the ‘historical psychology of human expression’ that navigates between Apollo and Dionysus. The 'weeping rock' that according to legend still stands on Mount Sipylus in Turkey, draws upon deeper anthropological patterns. Petrification indicates inertia, frigidity and a Medusan psychosis of fear. In nature, stones and rocks have a 'slumbering insistence' that can be captivating. Stones are after all visible but impenetrable, they index an irrevocable absence in their presence, and ‘have abode’ in an otherworldly region of utter blindness and silence. From a psychoanalytical perspective, Niobe’s petrifaction symbolises the straitening of her life and the loss of anima within a culture divorced from authentic feeling, nature, and instinct. Here Niobe meets Echo.

Peeters Publishers Studies in Oriental Liturgy: Proceedings of the Fifth International Congress of the Society of Oriental Liturgy, New York, 10-15 June 2014
This volume contains sixteen papers on Eastern Christian liturgies: on their origins, historical developments, current practices, and their theologies. The subjects range from initiation in Syriac Christianity to the origins of the feast of the Ark of the Covenant, and to the Book of Hours of Armenia and Jerusalem; from Coptic liturgy to an ancient Ethiopian catechesis with liturgical comments, and to the Palestinian Typicon; from Byzantine vesting rituals to the rite of marriage in the South-Slavic tradition, and to the fifteenth-century Archbishop Symeon of Thessalonica; from present-day Romanian liturgy `between Greeks and Slavs’ to Catholic veneration of Russian saints, and to the American Orthodox monastery of New Skete; and from the interactive web 2.0 to Robert Taft looking back on his impressive academic career. Thus the Society of Oriental Liturgy, dedicated to inquiries into the manifold worship traditions of the Eastern Churches, once more demonstrates that its research is an attractive cornucopia.

Peeters Publishers A Pillar of Cloud to Guide: Text-critical, Redactional, and Linguistic Perspectives on the Old Testament in Honour of Marc Vervenne
The present volume is intended as a special present on the occasion of Professor Marc Vervenne’s retirement from the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven). It intends to honour Marc Vervenne as an academic scholar, deeply engaged in the research of Ancient Hebrew literature. The book opens by the editors’ presentation of Marc Vervenne’s scientific biography and bibliography. Thereafter, and against the background of his own main interests in textual criticism, redaction criticism and linguistic-grammatical research, predominantly on texts of the Pentateuch, this volume equally presents a selection of contributions in those three domains. In admiration, respect and true friendship for Marc Vervenne, more than thirty colleagues from all over the world have contributed to this volume. In the first part, `The Pentateuch in Texts, Themes, and Methods’, scholars focus on Pentateuch texts from a multiplicity of methods and perspectives: historical research, historical-critical exegesis, literary criticism, redaction-criticism, themes and theology, reception history and narrative criticism. The second part, entitled `Textual Criticism’, deals with text-critical approaches of the text, on the basis of different textual witnesses with their own respective redaction and theology; it also discusses the close relationship and methodological intertwinement of textual and literary criticism in the current scholarly debate. In the third and final part, several perspectives on `Hebrew Language and Linguistics’ are offered against the background of Marc Vervenne’s interest in grammar and linguistics. The title of this volume reflects his first love for the book of Exodus and especially the Sea Narrative, which guided his whole career.

This study explores the theoretical discourses and rhetorical devices used by writers to legitimate fiction at a time when it was considered immoral by theologians and despised by scholars. The use of such discourses and devices is found in titles, prefaces and throughout the narratives themselves; they are employed to assert that the narratives contain moral truths or to assert their status as fact, thus rendering the narratives acceptable to the readership. The claim to factuality is asserted by the figure of the narrator-as-witness, who guarantees the veracity of the facts relayed, and, from 1700 onwards, by that of the manuscript editor. Following the publication of Henry Fielding's "Joseph Andrews" in 1742, the fiction of the period begins to flaunt its own fictionality, marking the emergence of self-reflexive fiction.

Peeters Publishers Media Ethics: Opening Social Dialogue
All of us form some kind of idea about what we see, hear or read in the media, not only about the content of the reports but also about the way in which they are presented and their relevance. We judge the reports as good or bad for this or that reason. And yet most people remain convinced that 'media ethics' has nothing to do with them. The term 'media ethics' leaves many people with the false impression that it refers to an exclusive specialist discipline for professionally trained experts. Ethics is not a field like biochemistry or ancient history : ethics has more to do wit the skill of being able to distinguish good institutions, actions and ideas from ones that are not so good, a skill everybody needs to exercise, certainly in this age where media are so influential. It is important for the well-being of our societies and democracies that the questions about good media are on the top of the agenda of everyone involved in it : producers, broadcasters, journalists, politicians, internet providers and media users. In this volume, well known ethicists and social scientists present their introduction to this question from various perspectives and different points of departure. With their contributions they hope to open a balanced social dialogue that will prevail over commercial and rhetorical violence.

Peeters Publishers The Apocalypse of Isaiah Metaphorically Speaking: A Study of the Use, Function and Significance of Metaphors in Isaiah 24-27
The analysis of metaphors constitutes an ideal point of entry into the exegesis of Biblical Hebrew poetic texts because it forces the exegete to examine the said text from a variety of perspectives. How can one discern the presence of metaphorical speech? What are the various types of metaphorical speech available to and employed by the biblical poet? How does the structure of a piece of Hebrew poetry carry its metaphorical dimensions? How did the biblical poet make use of the various types of metaphor and to what end? Can we ultimately gain access to the poet's meaning? The present study endeavours to provide at least a partial answer to these questions. In maintaining focus on the biblical text, moreover, the author hopes to anchor some of the abstractions of metaphorical theory with chosen examples taken from the so-called 'Apocalypse of Isaiah'. The Hebrew prophets constitute fertile ground in their use of metaphorical language for speaking the unspeakable, especially concerning the relationship between the people and God.
