Basic Books The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II
The New York Times bestselling account of one of history's most brutal- and forgotten- massacres, when the Japanese army destroyed China's capital city on the eve of World War IIIn December 1937, one of the most horrific atrocities in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking (what was then the capital of China), and within weeks, more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers were systematically raped, tortured, and murdered. In this seminal work, Iris Chang, whose own grandparents barely escaped the massacre, tells this history from three perspectives: that of the Japanese soldiers, that of the Chinese, and that of a group of Westerners who refused to abandon the city and created a safety zone, which saved almost 300,000 Chinese.Drawing on extensive interviews with survivors and documents brought to light for the first time, Iris Chang's classic book is the definitive history of this horrifying episode."Chang vividly, methodically, records what happened, piecing together the abundant eyewitness reports into an undeniable tapestry of horror." - Adam Hochschild, Salon

Arnoldsche Jewellery in Israel: Multicultural Diversity 1948 to the Present
In Israel East meets West. Their jewellery traditions blend, resulting in creative innovations. In the 1930s, European immigrants introduced the spirit of the Bauhaus, while oriental craftsmanship was invigorated in the 1950s and 1960s by immigration from Islamic countries. State jewellery companies preserved traditional crafts, while at the same time developing a new and elegant style, designed to express the national identity of the still young state of Israel. There are important links between native jewellery makers and European and American jewellery artists, who were guest lecturers at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in the 1970s and had a lasting influence on Israeli artists. The transition to art jewellery was finally completed in the 1980s, paving the way for artists who are now internationally renowned. A further chapter is dedicated to contemporary works by some outstanding young artists. Although their works are part of the global jewellery scene, they are also dedicated to their homeland, for example through unequivocal references to local political tensions. Artists (a selection): Bianca Eshel Gershuni, Esther Knobel, Deganit Stern Schocken, Vered Kaminski, Attai Chen.

Indiana University Press Throwing Like a Girl: And Other Essays in Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory
Feminist social theory and female body experience are the twin themes of Iris Marion Young's twelve outstanding essays written over the past decade and brought together here. Her contributions to social theory raise critical questions about women and citizenship, the relations of capitalism and women's oppression, and the differences between a feminist theory that emphasizes women's difference and one that assumes a gender-neutral humanity. Loosely following a phenomenological method of description, Young's essays on female embodiment discuss female movement, pregnancy, clothing, and the breasted body. In an introduction that situates her work in the context of shifts in feminist theory and politics over the past decade, Young emphasizes the rootedness of her theorizing in a dedicated and seasoned political activism.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Nationalbesitzstand und 'Wiedergutmachung': Zur historischen Semantik sudetendeutscher Kampfbegriffe
The study deals for the first time with the origin of the Sudeten German demands for reparation against Prague. It shows that these demands are not an invention of the post-1989 era, but rather began in the nationality conflict in Czechoslovakia in the interwar period. Iris Nachum analyzes the development of 'reparation' into a central Sudeten German catchphrase after 1919 and asks about the role that the concept of reparation played in the break-up of Czechoslovakia in 1938/39.

Museum of Modern Art D. W. Griffith: American Film Master
D. W. Griffith, most famous for his controversial film Birth of a Nation, was one of the undisputed pioneers of the film industry. This illustrated monograph, first published in 1940, traces Griffith's rise from an obscure actor-poet to the most imaginative and resourceful film producer of his time. In this facsimile edition of this classic book, Iris Barry gives a critical evaluation of the man under whose aegis the basic principles of the art of motion pictures were first fully developed. As Barry writes in the book's conclusion, 'the men who make films today know who it was that taught them the basis of their craft. The American public, who for 45 years have so keenly enjoyed and supported the motion picture...are recognizing that in Griffith they have one of the greatest and most original artists of our time.'

Rutgers University Press Matters of Choice: Puerto Rican Women's Struggle for Reproductive Freedom
Sterilization remains one of the most popular forms of fertility control in the world, but it has received little acknowledgment for decreasing birthrates on account of its dubious use as a means of population control, especially in developing countries. In Matters of Choice, Iris Lopez presents a comprehensive analysis of the dichotomous views that have portrayed sterilization either as part of a coercive program of population control or as a means of voluntary, even liberating, fertility control by individual women. Drawing upon her twenty-five years of research on sterilized Puerto Rican women from five different families in Brooklyn, Lopez untangles the interplay between how women make fertility decisions and their social, economic, cultural, and historical constraints. Weaving together the voices of these women, she covers the history of sterilization and eugenics, societal pressures to have fewer children, a lack of adequate health care, patterns of gender inequality, and misinformation provided by doctors and family members.Lopez makes a stirring case for a model of reproductive freedom, taking readers beyond victim/agent debates to consider a broader definition of reproductive rights within a feminist anthropological context.
