Small Worlds examines the minimalist trend in French writing, from the early 1980s to the present. Warren Motte first considers the practice of minimalism in other media, such as the plastic arts and music, and then proposes a theoretical model of minimalist literature. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the work of a variety of contemporary French writers and a diversity of literary genres. In his discussion of minimalism, Motte considers smallness and simplicity, a reduction of means (and the resulting amplification of effect), immediacy, directness, clarity, repetition, symmetry, and playfulness. He argues that economy of expression offers writers a way of renovating traditional literary forms and allows them to represent human experience more directly. Motte provides close readings of novels by distinguished contemporary French writers, including Edmond Jabès, Annie Ernaux, Hervé Guibert, Marie Redonnet, Jean Echenoz, Olivier Targowla, and Emmanuèle Bernheim, demonstrating that however diverse their work may otherwise be, they have all exploited the principle of formal economy in their writing.

Africa is changing and digitisation is playing a pivotal role in it. Throughout the whole continent, digital practices are emerging which radically transform African societies and their worldwide perception. The 'keys' provided by Herve Lacombe in this richly informed book open the door to understanding the essence of nineteenth-century French lyric theater. Lacombe illuminates the diverse elements that constitute opera by focusing his investigation around three main categories: composition and production; words, music, and drama; and the interaction of society, genre, and aesthetics. Lacombe chooses Bizet's "Pearl Fishers" (1863) as the exemplar of French opera that combines tradition and innovation. He uses "Pearl Fishers" as a paradigmatic point of reference for exploring questions of genesis, style, and aesthetic in other nineteenth-century French operatic works. French opera was a social art, he writes, and looping between past and future, between tradition and innovation, it achieved the seemingly impossible union of two antithetical aspects of Romanticism: the taste for theatricality and the desire for intimacy. The voices of contemporary witnesses are heard throughout Lacombe's book. He makes abundant use of the writings of such musician-critics as Berlioz, Reyer, and Saint-Saens and also draws on the works of many French writers, including Stendhal, Balzac, Baudelaire, and Zola. Illustrations showing costume sketches, scenery, posters, paintings, photographs, and magazine articles are attractive complements to discussions of particular operas. Anna Coatalen (née Hook) was born in Clifton, Bristol, studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art London, and then worked as a book illustrator before WW2. It was as a WRNS in Plymouth, that she met her Anglo/French husband Hervé, an RNVR engineer officer, which resulted in her spending her life in France. Anna painted prolifically throughout her life, continuing right up to her death aged 95, but never sought to publicise her work. Amongst friends who appreciated and admired her, were the artists Mary Fedden and Alexander Goudie, whose son, Lachlan, has written a very perceptive introduction to this book. Her eldest daughter Annik, with help from her family, has gathered together a selection of her most compelling works, ranging from early woodcuts and paintings to the three stained-glass windows in the Île Tudy church, Brittany. Triple Entendre discusses the rise and spread of background music in contexts as diverse as office workplaces, shopping malls, and musical performance. Hervé Vanel examines background music in several guises, beginning with Erik Satie's "Furniture Music" of the late 1910s and early 1920s, which first demonstrated the idea of a music not meant to be listened to and was later considered a precedent to modern, functional background music. Vanel argues that when the Muzak Corporation's commercialized ambient music became a predominant feature of modern life in the 1940s--both as a brand and a genre of background music--it also became a powerful instrument of social engineering in an advanced capitalist society. Different kinds of music were developed to encourage or incite greater productivity in the workplace, more energetic shopping, or more animated socializing. Vanel's discussion culminates in the creative response of the composer John Cage to the pervasiveness and power of background music in contemporary society. Cage neither opposed nor rejected Muzak, but literally answered its challenge by formulating a parallel concept that he called "Muzak-Plus." Forty years after Satie presented his work to general critical puzzlement, Cage saw how background music could be combined with mid-century technology and theories of art and performance to create a participatory soundscape on a scale that Satie could not have envisioned, again reconfiguring the listener's stance to music. By examining the subterranean connections existing between these three formulations of a singular idea, Triple Entendre analyzes and challenges the crucial boundary that separates an artistic concept from its actual implementation in life.

SEPA was created by Europe’s banks in 2002 in response to regulations and plans drawn up by the European Commission from a meeting in Lisbon at the turn of the millennium. Consequently, SEPA has been assisted by new legislation, the PSD, which was agreed in 2007. The implementation of SEPA takes place in 2008 within the banking industry, with full operation in 2010, and will be a massive change to not just banking, but all aspects of finance and financial services across Europe and the globe. This is because the vision for SEPA is that, by 2010, all euro payments are treated in the same way as domestic payments. In other words, European citizens and corporations enjoy a transparent market where there is no difference in charges for payments between Rome, Madrid, Paris and Munich. As a result, citizens, governments and corporations will have full access to finance transparently across 15 countries today and potentially 31 tomorrow. A United States of Europe, fuelled by fully integrated financing, will be different to the fragmented Europe of the past. Gardeil's work in spiritual theology. The volume was originally published posthumously through the collaboration of Fr. Gardeil's nephew, Fr. Henri-Dominique Gardeil, OP and Jacques Maritain. Fr. Ambroise, prior to beginning work on his masterpiece on spiritual experience, La Structure de l'âme et l'expérience mystique, drafted nearly eight-hundred pages that would have set forth a full presentation of moral-ascetical theology. While drafting this massive work, his reflection on the soul's receptive capacity for grace led him to the two-volume study, La Structure, and he never was able to finish his original designs for a comprehensive study of the Christian moral-spiritual life. Soon after his death, his nephew gathered several essays from the Revue thomiste and Revue de Jeunes, along with a complete-but-unpublished study on prayer. Grace, Predestination, and the Permission of Sin seeks to analyze a revi­sionist movement within Thomism in the 20th century over and against the traditional or classical Thomistic commentatorial treatment of phys­ical premotion, grace, and the permission of sin, especially as these re­late to the mysteries of predestination and reprobation.The over-arching critique leveled by the revisionists against the clas­sic treatment is that Bañezian scholasticism had disregarded the dissym­metry between the line of good (God’s causation of salutary acts) and the line of evil (God’s permission of defect and sin).The teaching of St. Thomas is explored via intimate consideration of his texts. The thought of St. Thomas is then compared with the work of Domingo Bañez and the foremost ‘Bañezian’ of the 20th century, Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange. The work then shifts to a consideration of the major players of the revisionist treatment, including Francisco Marín-Sola, Jacques Maritain, and Bernard Lonergan. Jean-Herve Nico­las is also taken up as one who had held both accounts during his life­time. O’Neil analyzes and critiques the revisionist theories according to the fundamental tenets of the classical account. Upon final analysis, it seeks to show that the classical account sufficiently distances God’s causal role in regard to free salutary acts and His non-causal role in re­gard to free sinful acts. Moreover, the revisionist account presents sig­nificant metaphysical problems and challenges major tenets of classical theism, such as the divine omnipotence, simplicity, and the exhaustive nature of divine providence.Finally, the implications of the traditional view are considered in light of the spiritual life. It is argued that the classical account is the only one which provides an adequate theological foundation for the Church’s robust mystical and spiritual tradition, and in particular, the abandon­ment to divine providence.

Over the past fifty years game theory has had a major impact on the field of economics. It was for work in game theory that the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded. Although non-cooperative game theory is better known, the theory of cooperative games has contributed a number of fundamental ideas to microeconomic analysis. Cooperative Microeconomics is the definitive textbook on these contributions. Herve Moulin distinguishes among three primary modes of cooperation: cooperation by direct agreements; cooperation by just, equitable compromise; and cooperation by decentralized behavior. La position de Nicolas de Cues sur l’islam n’est pas facile à cerner. Dans le De Pace Fidei, il semble présenter une vision irénique des différentes religions et du dialogue qui pourrait s’établir entre elles et ce discours général vaut en particulier pour l’islam, tandis que dans la Cribatio Alkorani, Nicolas, aux dire de nombreux interprètes, se montrerait beaucoup plus incisif, au point que ce livre ne pourrait absolument pas constituer le fondement d’un dialogue constructif entre le christianisme et l’islam. Mais un certain nombre de travaux du présent volume, montre que les choses ne sont pas si tranchées. Certes, Nicolas de Cues ignorait pas mal de choses sur l’Islam et les documents qu’il utilise l’induisent dans un certain nombre de cas en erreur. Mais, par de là la lettre, il ressort qu’il a remarquablement compris l’esprit coranique et que ces textes méritent à cet égard plus d’attention qu’ils n’en ont généralement reçue. Le présent recueil permet de se faire une idée plus précise de la cohérence de la position de Nicolas de Cues sur le dialogue entre christianisme et islam et des liens entre les thèses de la Cribatio Alkorani et la pensée globale du grand cardinal. « Esse est movere ». Ce petit bout de phrase, en Docte Ignorance II, 10 n’a guère attiré jusqu’ici les commentateurs de l’œuvre du Cusain. Or il se pourrait qu’il soit beaucoup plus important qu’il n’y paraît pour une compréhension équilibrée de la pensée de Nicolas de Cues. L’être serait à comprendre dynamiquement. Toute entité, en tant qu’elle est, implique autour d’elle du mouvement, du passage à l’acte. Il n’y a pas d’être qui soit dépourvu de tout effet, de tout impact sur le réel, mais toute réalité influe sur son environnement et même sur l’univers tout entier qui l’englobe. Nicolas de Cues se situerait donc dans la ligne de ces penseurs de l’être comme acte, parmi lesquels on pourrait compter Aristote, les stoïciens, Boèce, Thomas d’Aquin, Leibniz pour n’en citer que quelques uns. Le présent volume s’efforce d’étudier systématiquement le dynamisme métaphysique foncier de la pensée cusaine dans ses différentes dimensions : dynamisme de l’intelligence humaine, toujours poussée en avant dans sa quête du vrai par la présence sous-jacente de l’infini, de la volonté aussi bien humaine que divine, de l’espace, du cosmos, de la créativité humaine se manifestant dans le jeu, l’art, les mathématiques, le langage, l’assimilation au Christ. Il est intéressant de noter que Nicolas, fort critique habituellement à l’égard de la philosophie d’Aristote, reprend cependant les thèses du Stagirite à propos du mouvement, car il partage fondamentalement son point de vue dynamique : l’être est un procès, caractérisé par une composition de puissance et d’acte, qui mène chaque substance à son accomplissement.
