It is widely held today that classical Islamic law frees wives from any obligation to do housework. Wives’ purported exemption from domestic labor became a talking point among Muslims responding to Orientalist stereotypes of the “oppressed Muslim woman” by the late nineteenth century, and it has been a prominent motif in writings by Muslim feminists in the United States since the 1980s.In Wives and Work, Marion Holmes Katz offers a new account of debates on wives’ domestic labor that recasts the historical relationship between Islamic law and ethics. She reconstructs a complex discussion among Sunni legal scholars of the ninth to fourteenth centuries CE and examines its wide-ranging implications. As early as the ninth century, the prevalent doctrine that wives had no legal duty to do housework stood in conflict with what most scholars understood to be morally and religiously right. Scholars’ efforts to resolve this tension ranged widely, from drawing a clear distinction between legal claims and ethical ideals to seeking a synthesis of the two. Katz positions legal discussion within a larger landscape of Islamic normative discourse, emphasizing how legal models diverge from, but can sometimes be informed by, philosophical ethics. Through the lens of wives’ domestic labor, this book sheds new light on notions of family, labor, and gendered personhood as well as the interplay between legal and ethical doctrines in Islamic thought.

Wills of early Stuart England provide fascinating local and domestic details of life at the time. With the publication of this volume the Suffolk Records Society completes the coverage of wills of the 1620s and 1630s, two decades of great interest to those who study trans-Atlantic migration from eastern England and the foundation of the godly republic of New England. Written soon after the accession of Charles I and at a time of mounting political and religious tension, they offer a mine of personal, social and economic information. The book contains abstracts of 286 wills proved in the court of the archdeacon of Suffolk in the years 1627 and 1628. This court was the place to prove the third and humblest category of wills of testators whose real estate was situated in onlyone parish. The court's jurisdiction covered the eastern half of the county, an extensive and rich area of farming and industrial parishes, market towns, coastal ports and the large town of Ipswich. The varied economy of the region is well illustrated by the impressive range of occupations pursued by testators. The wills have been fully abstracted, preserving their introductory religious clauses and the flavour of the original language, but cutting or condensing certain repetitive words and phrases. The contents have been extensively indexed by testator, other people mentioned (mainly legatees and witnesses), occupation, place and subject. Marion Allen gained an MAfrom the University of Wales for a study of Aldeburgh between 1547 and 1660. She was formerly assistant archivist at the then Ipswich and East Suffolk Record Office.

In many Mediterranean countries we observe newcomers to the political arena: new forms of social networking, growing opposition, and protest articulated by local communities or locally active social movements. In this special issue we present fresh research on localized practices of resistance by protest groups, solidarity initiatives, and cultural projects, which have arisen in the wake of the 2008 crisis. Based on ethnological fieldwork, the volume offers insights into the media-based protest against the commodification of the historic Marseille district Panier (Philip Cartelli); urban gardening in Ljubljana as a practice opposing the growing neoliberal market economy (Saa Poljak Istenič); and the movement Genuino Clandestino, a solidarity network of small-scale farmers in Italy (Alexander Koensler). Three case studies deal with social movement in Greece: a solidarity network in Volos, where citizens developed an alternative exchange and trading system (Andreas Streinzer); grassroots mobilizations as resistant practices in the inner urban neighbourhood of Exarchia in Athens (Monia Cappuccini); and finally rural solidarity networks on the Peloponnese peninsula (James Verinis). A comparative discussion of Mediterranean protest movements (Jutta Lauth Bacas and Marion Näser-Lather) identifies underlying common features in these clearly different, yet relatable practices of protest: among others, the major role of face-to-face interaction and mutual trust.

The British government's top secret Code & Cypher School at Bletchley Park, otherwise known as Station X, was the unlikely setting for one of the most vital undercover operations of the Second World War. It was at Bletchley in present-day Milton Keynes that teams of code breakers succeeded in cracking Germany's supposedly unbreakable Enigma codes, thereby shortening the war by at least two years. Essays exploring Chaucer's identity as a London poet and the urban context for his writings. Literature of the city and the city in literature are topics of major contemporary interest. This volume enhances our understanding of Chaucer's iconic role as a London poet, defining the modern sense of London as a city in history, steeped in its medieval past. Building on recent work by historians on medieval London, as well as modern urban theory, the essays address the centrality of the city in Chaucer's work, and of Chaucer to a literature and a language of the city. Addressing a wide range of improvised art and music forms—from jazz and cinema to dance and literature—this volume's contributors locate improvisation as a key site of mediation between the social and the aesthetic. This illuminating book traces the development of Scottish women’s writing in English from its genesis in the late eighteenth century to its flowering in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hindered initially by the hostility of the Presbyterian Church and the self-serving attitude of the male hierarchy which denied them a proper education, an astonishing number of women found opportunities, in the midst of domestic obligations, to write, and often publish – novels, poetry, diaries, journalism, letters, essays and reportage. Charlotte Waldie and Christina Keith visited, respectively, Waterloo and Flanders in the immediate aftermath of battle. Another intrepid writer, Emily Graves, wrote a memoir of her travels in Transylvania in The Light Beyond the Forest – from which Bram Stoker directly lifted the most blood-curdling elements of Dracula. Others remembered include literary multi-tasker and businesswoman Christian Isabel Johnstone; playwright Joanna Baillie; working-class poets Marion Bernstein and Janet Hamilton; novelist Susan Ferrier; memoirist Anne Grant of Laggan; and writer and scientist Mary Somerville, depicted on the cover, after whom Somerville College, Oxford is named.

"Thesaurus Cultus et Rituum Antiquorum (ThesCRA)" is a major multivolume reference work on all known aspects of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman cults and rituals. Providing both sweeping overview and in depth investigation, "ThesCRA" covers the period from Homeric times (1000 B.C.) to late Roman times (A.D. 400). Like the first two volumes, Volume III deals with the dynamic elements of cult: divination; prayer, gestures, and acts of prayer; gestures and acts of veneration; oath; malediction; profanation; magic; and consecration and foundation rites. The major contributors to this volume are Pascale Linant de Bellefonds, Walter Burkert, Fulvio Canciani, Fritz Graf, Ulrich Sinn, and Emmanuel Voutiras. The two final volumes in this work are dedicated to static elements of cult such as cult places and their personnel. Those volumes are scheduled for publication in spring 2006. The index will be published in August 2006. "ThesCRA" was developed by the eminent group of scholars who published the eight double-volumes of "LIMC (Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae)".
