Imagine living in a box at the bottom of the sea for a month at a time. Locked away in a saturation chamber, plumbed to depths of more than 500 feet, this has been David Beckett's love, life and work for all his adult life. Destined to become a pig farmer in the late 1960s, a twist of fate saw David become an air diver, and within a short space of time he progressed to saturation diving. He would brush with death on more than one occasion - not least when helping to recover 47 bodies of the victims of the Sumburgh chinook disaster in Scotland's Shetland Islands - and when called in to assist with the deadliest peacetime shipwreck in Europe, as the MS Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea in 1994 and claimed 852 lives. Amongst the depths of despair, there are many lighter moments, including treasure hunting in the Philippines, almost clinching a contract to salvage the bursar's safe from the Titanic and surviving a 24-hour typhoon which brought 80-foot waves crashing down on his boat. The Loonliness of a Deep Sea Diver is gritty, sometimes comical and offers a unique glimpse into a life at sea, much of it at the bottom.

Anthony Barron explores the relationship between the philosophy of Schopenhauer and the forms and themes of Becketts critical and creative writings. He shows that Becketts aesthetic preoccupations are consonant with some of Schopenhauers seminal arguments regarding the arational basis of artistic composition and appreciation and the impotence of reason in human affairs. While Becketts critical writings are, in places, formidably opaque, this work examines the ways in which such texts can be elucidated when their intertextual affinities with Schopenhauers arguments are revealed. Using Schopenhauers thought as a presiding interpretative framework, Barron demonstrates how the widespread presence of philosophical and theological ideas in Becketts creative texts signifies less about his personal convictions than it does about his authorial aims. He thereby highlights the ways in which discursive ideas were appropriated and manipulated by Beckett for purely literary ends. A central contention of this book is that to judge the place of ideas within Becketts art, we should ignore questions of their theoretical persuasiveness and consider their role as purely aesthetic devices, the value of which is revealed in terms of the existential impact they have upon his characters. In each of the chapters that deal with Becketts fiction, Barron underscores the artistically energizing tensions that exist between the concepts that Becketts characters invoke in their attempts to comprehend the import of their experiences and their conative and affective tribulations which invariably prove resistant to such analysis. Here the means by which such conceptual aporias engender semantic potentialities underpin an exploration of Becketts creative assimilation of rational discourse. While the focus of this publication is upon Becketts early and middle fiction, which was composed at a time when the relationship between the chaos of quotidian ordeals and the value of rational thought became most acutely relevant for him, numerous cross-references to his dramatic and poetical works are provided in order to highlight the overall significance of these issues within his oeuvre.

Samuel Beckett directed Krapp's Last Tape on four separate occasions: this volume offers a facsimile of his 1969 Schiller-Theater notebook.Professor Knowlson writes that in these notes 'we see Beckett simplifying, shaping and refining, as he works towards a realization of the play that will function well dramatically. The material reveals a flexibility and openness of approach often considered alien to Beckett's ways of working in the theatre.' The Schiller notebook also contains some of the most explicit analysis by Beckett of his own work ever revealed.The revised text incorporates many of the changes Beckett made in the 1969 Schiller production, as well as subsequent changes in later productions. This book presents these developments, bringing the study of the Susquehannocks into modern anthropological context.An Iroquoian group that inhabited the lower Susquehanna River valley and portions of the Potomac River drainage, the Susquehannocks were key agents in the fur trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They were consequently targets of sporadic warfare by the Iroquois Confederacy and attempted to seek refuge in a series of fortified villages near the Susquehanna River, but they were dispersed by the European colonizers, and in 1763 settlers massacred the remnants of the original nation. Subjectivity and Nationhood in Yeats, Joyce, and Beckett: Nietzschean Constellations reconceptualises Friedrich Nietzsche’s position in the intellectual history of modernism and substantively refigures our received ideas regarding his relationship to these Irish modernists. Building on recent developments in new modernist studies, the book demonstrates that Nietzsche is a modernist writer and a modernist philosopher by drawing new parallels between his engagement with established philosophical theories and the aesthetic practices that Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot identified as quintessentially modernist. With specific reference to key Nietzschean philosophemes – eternal recurrence, the Übermensch, transnationalism, cultural paralysis, and ethical perspectivism – it challenges the longstanding assumption that Yeats, who repeatedly acknowledged his admiration for Nietzsche, is the most 'Nietzschean' of these Irish modernists. While showing how both Joyce and Beckett are in many important ways more 'Nietzschean' than Yeats, this interdisciplinary study makes a number of significant and timely contributions to the fields of Irish studies and modernist studies.

However, this judgement ignored an aspect of Becketts work and its reception that is, arguably, not yet fully understood; the intimate relation between his work and popular culture. Beckett used popular cultural forms; but popular culture has also found a place both for the work and for the man. Combining phenomenological analysis with dance and performance analysis and affect theory, A Theatre of Affect: The Corporeal Turn in Samuel Beckett's Drama takes stock of the various ways in which the body in Samuel Beckett's drama participates in the affective ecology of performance. Affect is here located in the materiality of the body and discussed in relation to the symbolic significance of, for instance, the effort, direction, speed, or duration of a posture, movement, or gesture. Although the meaning of the body in Beckett's stage-images cannot be mapped onto conventional discursive meanings, the significance of the body's formal modulations is affective in the sense that the import of such changes is immediately recognized and felt as significant by spectators. The National Gallery was one of Samuel Beckett's favourite haunts. He whiled away many hours there among the Old Masters. January, 1918: Franz Becker, a high-scoring, decorated ace, rejoins his fighter squadron in Flanders. He has been fighting since October 1914, and is suffering badly from the strain of war. Imperial Germany is almost finished, strangled by the Allied blockade, its people starving. The country is running out of men and resources, but there is one last chance to win the war: Russia has made peace and the Americans have yet to arrive. Franz and his fellow pilots know they have to fight on, no matter how outnumbered they are, otherwise the enemy will be in Germany. The Spring takes a heavy toll of the top aces, and Franz knows that it will soon be his turn to go to the Great Army. His close friend Karl von Leussow is at home in Brandenburg, on convalescent leave after being shot down and badly wounded the summer before. Franz misses him desperately, but believes Karl to be safe. He can only hope that they will meet again, “after the war”...whenever that may be. Spring turns to Summer and every German offensive fails, with terrible casualties. The Allied aircraft are ever more numerous, the new pilots are barely out of school, and most die within a couple of weeks. The ranks of the Great Army continue to grow. Combining phenomenological analysis and affect theory, this book takes stock of the various ways in which the body in Samuel Becketts drama participates in the affective ecology of performance. If the post-human innovation up until the present has worked to decentre the human, by rendering notions of thinking, experience, and affect impersonal and by developing new models of expression and communication, then this innovation seems to be already underway in Becketts theatre of affect where the assault against language is made possible through the thematising of the body as a mode of encountering presence. The corporeal turn in Becketts drama therefore has far-reaching implications for the production of meaning in his work.
