This fascinating book examines the issue of affirmative action and how it has been affected by the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and various Supreme Court decisions. Utilizing data from the Personnel Boards of seven southern states, Ronnie Tucker assesses the impact of legal decisions on recruiting, hiring, and promoting African Americans in state government. His research is unique in its focus on the 'New South,' allowing him to determine whether southern states are progressing in the area of employment practices. Although legal decisions did not apparently have a direct effect on the pattern of employment in southern states, the 1965 Voting Rights Act helped to increase the number of black elected officials and, subsequently, the number of African Americans in state government. The problem of how to prepare teachers for work in urban school systems is a critical issue in education today. In this timely volume of contributed articles, the authors describe the newly implemented faculty development programs at seven urban universities. With varying success, each of these universities improved the preparation of schoolteachers by developing programs to educate their own faculties on ways to address the problems of urban children, their schools, and their communities. Until recently, few urban universities were committed to local community development. Volition and Valuation is a typology of valuations, and conflicts between values, using a phenomenological approach that treats the difference between cognitive-thinking and value-thinking as a difference in the mode of intentionality towards the objects. It also suggests a method for axiology to bracket the validity of the values described, acknowledge that the observation of phenomena of consciousness goes beyond empirical observation, and has a character of pure intuition or an intuition of essences which are a source of metavaluative knowledge. Michael Strauss explores the origins and nature of values, focusing on the norms and rules of valuations, called valuative values. He argues that valuative values cannot be reduced to a single value-type, nor do they always arise from a sensation or feeling, but can be created, chosen, and established. Strauss also refutes the method for measuring values devised by Plato in his Protagoras dialogue, and suggests middle ground between relativism and absolutism and between subjectivism and objectivism.

A Reference Grammar of Mbili explores the major linguistic components of the Mbili language from a primarily descriptive point of view and within the cultural context of this Bantu language spoken in Cameroon. It presents a detailed and accessible account of the roots and history of the language, clearly situated within both the Niger Congo language group in general and the Grassfield Bantu language sub group specifically. The language portion begins with a descriptive introduction to the sound segments of Mbili and the methods of combining them. It then moves into the suprasegments of the language, including tone, stress, and intonation; it investigates the interaction of tone, tense, and mood, as well as the distribution of tone and intonation in Mbili. Segmental and suprasegmental phonemes are related in terms of what they require, tolerate, and exclude. The next presentation deals with the morphology of nouns and verbs. On the one hand it establishes a structural identification of the noun classes and determines a functional and semantic categorization of the classifiers; on the other hand it identifies and relates the temporal, aspectual, and modal categories of Mbili, and also studies the semantics of the verb through a case grammar analysis. Finally, the book approaches syntax through a clause and sentence level of analysis to explain the nature of sentence structure in a manner related to English sentence structure. The appendix contains a lexicon as well as traditional folk stories and their translations to convey aspects of Cameroonian culture and examples of the nature of the Mbili language.

Employing seventy-eight in-depth interviews with Italian and Jewish American women, this study presents the subjective voices of women caught up in an important social change: the pre-1940 transformation of childbirth. Italian women were more varied in their choices—some were more likely to prefer home birth with a midwife, while others used a hospital clinic or private physician. A significant number moved from home to hospital over their birth careers, while nearly all Jewish women selected physician-assisted hospital birth. The story of the relationship of Franklin Delano Roosevelt with Tammany Hall of New York has never been completely told. This book studies the treatment of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, and other Communist leaders from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. It also unravels the complex political culture in the last phase of Deng's China. The author explores why and how a Chinese Communist pantheon has risen at a time when Communist ideology is fading and the current Chinese leaders are coming to grips with a wide array of moral, social, and economic maladies. The Party has been marred by corruption and the whole society poisoned by greed. Thus, the invention of the pantheon is an important part of the official plan to preserve Communist rule.By highlighting patriotism, riding economic successes, manipulating public sentiment, and re-creating symbols, the state and power elite have skillfully promoted the pantheon to mitigate a legitimacy crisis and to relieve succession pangs. Jiang Zemin and his colleagues, who do not have the charisma of the Communist leaders of the older generation, need to link themselves to the top pantheon with the trinity of Mao, Zhou, and Deng at the top. Yet the pantheon is not merely an official product. Behind the facade of the great worship lies a multitude of intentions, purposes, and meanings, the work of a confluence of different interest groups.

Drawing from sacred scriptures, world religions, literature, philosophy and psychology, this monograph explores them as universal sources of religious experience and mysticism.
