University Press of America Hellenization Revisited: Shaping a Christian Response Within the Greco-Roman World
This volume focuses on the role of Judaism, particularly that of Philo, and of Gnosticism, as two important forces shaping the response of early Christianity to the Hellenistic Greco-Roman culture of its time. The sections which examine Hellenistic Judaism investigate themes from Greek philosophy, like 'reason controlling the passions,' which are also crucial in shaping Philo's perception of the feminine. The manner in which Jewish authors of this period attempt to synthesize Old Testament with Greek philosophical themes like creation/cosmology receives specific treatment. Essays dealing with Gnosticism re-examine themes from Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle in Gnostic documents, but also look at the role of Hellenistic Judaism with its interests in Sophia. Co-published with the Institute for Christian Studies.

University Press of America Buying Trouble: National Security and Reliance on Foreign Industry
Recent economic trends have created strong incentives for foreign industry to serve as reliable suppliers of military-related products during crises. The formation of free trade zones and economic blocs also make anti-American trade embargoes virtually impossible to administer. In this book, the author advocates the positive effects of military research on science and explains how the defense acquisition process could be more efficient. He seeks to address whether the national security is jeopardized when the Pentagon and American defense industries rely upon imports of defense-related products and technologies. Contents: Defense Industries in the 1980s; Objectives and Definitions; Gulf War Lessons; Technological Superiority; Sustainability, Sea Lift and Air Lift; Other Sustainability Programs; Pacific Rim Imports; Investments, Trading Blocs, Other Factors; Conclusions; Bibliography; Index.

University Press of America Legal and Political Obligation: Classic and Contemporary Texts and Commentary
This book focuses upon the perennial question of the existence and nature of an obligation to obey the law. Leading writers have, at one time or another, emphasized considerations such as gratitude, 'divine ordering,' prudence, contract, autonomy, and utility in seeking to justify, or to deny any justification for, some sort of obligation to obey the positive law. The book provides relevant selections from a sampling of the historical approaches to legal obligation taken by writers such as Plato, Augustine, Aquinas, Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Rousseau, Thoreau, Bentham, Marx and Engels, and Martin Luther King, Jr. These classical discussions are augmented by critical questions and commentary, by independent discussions of the question of legal obligation by a wide range of contemporary writers, and by relevant judicial cases discussing matters such as conscientious objection and civil disobedience.

University Press of America Systems Theory and Scientific Philosophy: An Application of the Cybernetics of W. Ross Ashby to Personal and Social Philosophy, the Philosophy of Mind, and the Problems of Artificial Intelligence
Systems Theory and Scientific Philosophy constitutes a totally new approach to philosophy, the philosophy of mind and the problems of artificial intelligence, and is based upon the pioneering work in cybernetics of W. Ross Ashby. While science is humanity's attempt to know how the world works and philosophy its attempt to know why, scientific philosophy is the application of scientific techniques to questions of philosophy. In this vein, Bryant explores utility theory, the theories of relative existence and build-up release, and analyzes such hitherto-unidentified phenomena as positive pleasure, the problems of voting motivation, the trademark paradox, the paradox of value, and Gresham's Law for drugs. Contents: Part One: Science and Systems Theory; Part Two: Mind and System; Part Three: Systems Theory and Social Philosophy.

University Press of America Major Issues in Islam: The Challenges Within and Without
This book explores matters that have negatively affected the public image and led to distorted depictions of Islam from the late nineteenth century to the present. The areas of uneasiness and debate among Muslims and non-Muslims alike include Islamic values and identity in the post-caliphate era, after colonialism, and now under Western hegemony. There is anxiety about the place of Shari’a in the light of Western law and the state, secularism, democracy, human rights, the equality of women, and the place of Islamic education in transmitting Islamic values as secular education dominates societies. There are apprehensions over the relation between religion and politics as in the rise of Muslim Brotherhoods, Wahhabism, Islamism, al-Qaeda, and Islamic State. In non-Muslim countries concerns are about the status of Muslim marriage, polygamy, divorce, and interest (in business). Every topic is examined through the Noble Qur’an and the Hadith, classical writings, and linguistic analysis.

University Press of America Hume's 'New Scene of Thought' and The Several Faces of David Hume in the Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion
Hume's 'New Scene of Thought,' is a defense of Hume's philosophical principles in the Treatise of Human Nature. Nelson shows that Hume's new philosophy was a uniquely original and profound work, a masterpiece in philosophical literature, and a work worthy of serious study and acceptance. Expounding on the meaning that Hume gives to his new science of man founded on an empirical foundation, it is shown that all the sciences were, in effect, nothing more than branches of 'introspective psychology.' The thesis of The Several faces of David Hume in The Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion is that Dialogues is a reflective philosophical autobiography of Hume himself. Every character represents Hume at some stage in his life: Pamphilus is Hume at fifteen, and Philo is Hume in his adult philosophical maturity. Cleanthes is Bishop Butler but also Hume, when Hume was under the sway of Butler's writings as a young man. Demea represents the orthodox religious views that Hume was raised on, which Hume rejected by his eighteenth year.

University Press of America Turkey and the West: From Neutrality to Commitment
Turkey and the West: From Neutrality to Commitment considers the formulation of Turkish foreign policy in the post-Atatürk period of 1938 to 1958 and discusses Turkey’s uneasy shift from neutrality to become a member of the Western Alliance. Turkey’s decision to ally itself with the Western grouping of states shaped its apprehension of regional and world politics in decades to come. Turkey’s choice, however, was neither adequately perceived nor fully appreciated in the volatile atmosphere of 1950s and onwards and went largely unnoticed on the part of Western democracies. A reinterpretation of Turkey's recent history throws considerable light on the complexities surrounding this strategically important country.

The Philosophical Significance of Immortality in Thomas Aquinas is a comprehensive study of the theme of immortality in Thomas Aquinas. University Press of America Linking Lifetimes: A Global View of Intergenerational Exchange
In many developing and post-industrialized nations, there are powerful demographic and social changes that are endangering the natural ways that old and young have traditionally interacted. The current growth in the young and elderly segments of the population, of most countries, is leading to new challenges in terms of providing health care, education, financial support, and social support systems for the young as well as the elderly. An important set of strategies for addressing these trends and the quality of life concerns they generate is the facilitation of intergenerational programs. The National Council on the Aging has defined 'intergenerational programming' as 'activities or programs that increase cooperation, interaction or exchange between any two generations.' In Linking Lifetimes, the contributors explore the range of intergenerational programs and policies found across the globe, and examine their role in ensuring the transmission of cultural values from generation to generation. By illustrating the rich diversity of intergenerational program models, the contributors discover how the common goal of promoting intergenerational interaction and understanding unfolds into differential trends, social issues, and human service systems.

University Press of America Russian Imperialism from Ivan the Great to the Revolution
This collection of essays explores the history of Russian imperialism, an especially pertinent topic in light of the newly democratic country's entrance into the geopolitical forum-the country's tenuous relationship with Europe was anticipated by Russian historian Nicholas Danilevskii. Some may argue conflicts such as Chechnya are remnants of the imperial thirst for dominance, and that the ever-evolving nation is still fighting old wars over her image as an empire. The works contained in this book trace some of these encounters, and in turn, provide a backdrop for those of today.

University Press of America Between Hume's Philosophy and History: Historical Theory and Practice
This book explores the historical dimension of David Hume's philosophy, a feature that Spencer Wertz calls 'historical empiricism.' According to Wertz, Hume sought to understand the present in terms of the past in a way that anticipates the historical constructionism of R.G. Collingwood and Herbert Butterfield. Hume's method is to tell a story about something's origin in which ideas yield impressions. These impressions eventually yield to experience that includes history as part of its structure. Arguing that Hume worked between history and philosophy, Wertz demonstrates that Hume's historical empiricism consists of four key concepts. These concepts are history, human nature, experience, and nature, all of which play a role in historical narration, taste, moral judgments, and the historiography of science. Bringing new insights to the study of Hume's work, this book will be an important resource for scholars of philosophy.

University Press of America Preaching in Revival: Preaching and a Theology of Awakening
Preaching in Revival explores the nature of religious awakening and its relationship to the art of preaching. Keevil identifies the problems of preaching in a post-modern society and specifically addresses what kind of preaching can promote religious awakening during troubling times. A comparative study of the two major traditions of modern Evangelicalism provides a historical perspective on the current state of preaching in America. The study concludes with a discussion of the psychological aspects of revival that will stimulate those seeking personal spiritual nourishment or those working toward the renewal of a larger congregation.

University Press of America Quit Smoking Painlessly
This work presents a step-by-step program of gradual withdrawal from smoking. The great advantage of this gradual approach over the 'cold turkey' approach is that it avoids precipitating the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. The discomfort of such withdrawal symptoms is one of the strong factors undermining smoking-cessation plans. The method herein advocated is based upon well-established learning principles. This book promotes an understanding of these principles and their application in a self-behavior modification program.

University Press of America The Cultural Contribution of British Protestant Missionaries and British-America: Cooperation to China's National Development During the 1920s.
During the period of 1920-1930, British Protestant and American missionaries engaged in many cultural activities in China, which in many ways, helped to promote China's modernization and development as a nation. In this thought-provoking study, Cui examines the missions' contributions to Chinese medical services, educational systems, and social reform, including the missionaries' influence on Chinese women's emancipation through missionary work. In making this assessment of the positive cultural achievements of the Protestant missionaries and their unique role in promoting China's progress and modernization, the author contradicts many traditional accounts by Chinese scholars. University Press of America Der Sandmann/The Sandman By E. T. A. Hoffmann: The Original German and a New English Translation with Critical Introductions
E.T.A. Hoffman can be considered one of the fathers of German Gothic Horror. He wrote one of the first German horror novels, Die Elixiere des Teufels (The Devil’s Elixirs), and he also wrote the story to which Tchaikovsky composed the Nutcracker Suite. The Sandman is a story that is unique in its perspective, which depends on which of the main characters’ viewpoints one believes. If one follows the interpretation of the romantic, Nathanael, then there is a mad man after him (from a childhood trauma related to the Sandman). If one believes the viewpoint of Clara, the rational one, it is all in his mind and pure fantasy. Written in 1816/17, the topic of the automaton is also a question of what is real and what is merely perceived to be real, which is at the root of the uncanny, as described by Freud, among others. Blurring the lines between mechanical and human is a very contemporary issue with virtual assistants and AI’s whose voices are indistinguishable from humans. This narrative is over 200 years old still and has many interesting and prescient questions at its core that modern audiences will find interesting and engaging.

University Press of America Hog Wash: The Strange Case of SSA Global
Hog Wash chronicles the efforts of a group of international environmentalists, investors, and researchers as they attempt to find an ecologically friendly process to clean-up the toxic waste pouring into lakes, rivers, and streams from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs). This book begins in New Orleans but quickly transitions to Brussels, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome. Hog Wash is a first-hand account of what can go terribly wrong when well-intentioned, but naïve academics confront savvy, experienced conmen. There was too much at stake for this project to ever be successful. Too many powerful, wealthy people had too much to lose by protecting the environment. Hog Wash is the third installment of John W. Sutherlin’s ‘environmental trilogy’. Like his previous books, Hog Wash is methodically documented and written in an accessible style that is more like a novel than nonfiction.

University Press of America Start With the Future and Work Back: A Heritage Management Manifesto
Start With the Future and Work Back: A Heritage Management Manifesto is a lively, often amusing, but seriously perceptive take on the business of history and the history of business. The book explores The History Factory’s role in creating and shaping the global heritage management industry, drawing on its work with a broad array of corporations and the original business characters the firm has served since its founding in 1979. At its heart, the book is a 21st century survey of innovative business leadership that builds on the stories of courageous leaders at corporations willing to dig deeply into their inventory of experiences to support authentic communications, establish credible brand positioning, and improve employee retention and recruitment. Iconic examples of inside-out business positioning using heritage range from the sartorial remake of Brooks Brothers to stories of innovation told by company employees at Subaru; from New Balance’s immersive global headquarters exhibit that aptly conveys its dynamic culture to the creation and maintenance of the Wrigley archive. The book makes a powerful case for the brand value of applying corporate heritage for companies seeking to grow and remain relevant in a competitive, global economy.

University Press of America How to be Profitable and Moral: A Rational Egoist Approach to Business
A basic dilemma confronting today’s manager is how to be both profitable and moral. Making profits through immoral means—such as deceiving investors or customers—is unsustainable. Likewise, remaining moral while losing money will cause a business to fail. According to conventional morality, either a business manager maximizes profits and necessarily compromises on ethics, or necessarily sacrifices profits in order to be moral. Woiceshyn explains why this is a false dichotomy and offers rational egoism as an alternative moral code to businesspeople who want to maximize profits ethically. Through logical argument and various examples, this book shows how to apply principles such as rationality, productiveness, honesty, justice, and pride for long-term self-interest.

University Press of America A Possible Way Out: Formalizing Housing Informality in Egyptian Cities
A Possible Way Out brings together the research and experience gained in the last two decades on the issue of informal housing in Egypt. The diversity of case study materials and the specific policy focus make A Possible Way Out an important contribution to the formulation of future urban strategies in the South.

University Press of America J.P. Morgan and the Transportation Kings: The Titanic and Other Disasters
The concept was simple, to link American railroads and global dominance of the seas with a railroad line through China and Russia, enter the back door of Europe, and create new royalty: the Transportation Kings. Vanderbilt, Hill, Morgan, and Harriman all pursued the grand dream. They were America’s industrial princes, poised for their greatest accomplishments, only to find that they had not considered the gauntlet awaiting them in the courts of kings and Kaisers, parliaments and congress. They awoke John Bull and helped precipitate revolution in China. They brought about the building of Lusitania and, in reaction, they owned and built the Titanic. We all know how the disaster story ends; this is how the story came about.

University Press of America Jewish Orthodoxy and Its Discontents: Religious Dissidence in Contemporary Israel
In this book, Marta T. Topel utilizes anthropological research to analyze both macro and micro social processes among secular and Orthodox Jews in Israel. She covers such complex issues as the tensions between the two groups and the radicalization of Israeli Jewish Orthodoxy in the last thirty years. The book also delves into micro social processes such as the long and tortured journey of Israeli religious dissidents and the role of non-governmental organizations in helping these dissidents adapt to secular society. In addition, she discusses the symbolic and ritual paraphernalia that dissidents must become familiar with in order to be successful in their new lives as secular Jews. Jewish Orthodoxy and Its Discontents approaches the phenomenon of religious dissidence within the Jewish Israeli Orthodoxy through the lens of the inverse phenomenon: religious conversion to Jewish Orthodoxy. This outlook is based on theoretical ground as both events constitute a radical change of the ideology of both the social actors and the social structures they have abandoned.

These areas include, deviance and anomie, stratification and occupational mobility, the origins of capitalism, combining narrative sociology with modeling, racial and ethnic relations, unacknowledged emotions within the psychiatric interview, the genesis of violence, and the impact of moving from a vernacular to a theoretical approach to language.

University Press of America Faces: The Changing Look of Humankind
This book counteracts the commonly accepted belief that the expressionless stereotypical human faces in prehistoric and ancient art are the result of a consciously chosen style. Brener introduces evidence from psychology, evolutionary biology and other disciplines that suggest that something more significant may be involved. Scientists have emphasized the innate, genetically based nature of our fascination with the human face and its almost limitless expressive capacity, all of which is represented in the art of the last six centuries. But little attention has been paid to the anomaly of the vacuous expressions of earlier facial representations. Brener attributes this change to a change in the functioning of the human brain, as well as the role of cultural factors. It is the evolution of both genes and culture that has resulted in a marked increase in the human ability to create and interpret facial expressions. The result of this has impacted human behavior. It has increased human empathy leading to the abolition of human sacrifice, and the beginnings of courtly love in the late 11th century. More complex and subtle facial expression, and the ability to respond to it on an emotional level, has played a major role in both of these historic behavior changes. This book is of interest to scholars interested in anthropology, art history, and/or psychology, as well as evolutionary biology.

University Press of America A Colonial Legacy: The Dispute Over the Islands of Abu Musa, and the Greater and Lesser Tumbs
This book deals with the legal status of the three islands of Abu Musa, and the Greater and Lesser Tumbs. In December 1971, the sixty-seven years of the Anglo-Iranian dispute over the islands transformed itself into Irano-UAE conflict—a conflict which Iran considers a colonial legacy inherited by the United Arab Emirates. The alliance of convenience between Iran and Britain cemented under Shah Abbas in the early seventeenth century had faded away by the mid-eighteenth century, after the collapse of the Safavid Dynasty. During the nineteenth century, the Anglo-Iranian relationship evolved into mutual distrust and resentment. The matter is complex, particulary because material facts and evidence, relating to a very short span of time in the nineteenth century, are ambiguous and debatable. British Colonial interests and past interventions have marred the evidence. Hence, clarification of the material facts and the choice of applicable law form the crux of the present study. This is a multi-disciplinary study, dealing with geography, history, economics, politics, international relations and law.

University Press of America Feminine Nation: Performance, Gender and Resistance in the Works of John McGahern and Neil Jordan
This book examines two prominent Irish authors, Neil Jordan and John McGahern. Jordan is famous for his films, most notably The Crying Game, and this work studies both his films and his fiction. McGahern is the most respected, lauded Irish novelist since Joyce; a writer who broke the mold of Anglo-Irish writing after it settled into a conservative rut in the 1950s. The works of Jordan and McGahern, involved with seemingly minor issues of householding and parenting within the patriarchal family, reveal male and female characters to be representations of a masculine past and feminine present competing for dominance in the modern state. The author argues that in Jordan's and McGahern's works the modern state is described as stereotypically feminine, and that women's individual agency is directed to the deliberate blurring of gender difference upon which patriarchy depends. The first book-length study of the contemporary Anglo-Irish novel written from a women's studies and a post-colonial perspective, Feminine Nation will be of considerable interest to a large audience composed of Women's Studies, Irish Studies, and Post-Colonial studies.

University Press of America Women on the Biblical Road: Ruth, Naomi, and the Female Journey
This book investigates the feminine traditions of the Hebrew Bible in a readable manner, pertinent to contemporary times. It is unique in its focus on the experiences of biblical women and not how they were perceived within a patriarchal context.Women on the Biblical Road explores, through an eco-feminist lens, female heroes, their journey cycles, and the oral tradition from which these stories originate. At the core of this look at women on the biblical road is the book of Ruth, the Bible's most complete tale of the female adventure. Caspi and Havrelock point out that the journey of Ruth and Naomi corresponds with a cycle of return and redemption, inseparable from Ruth's and Naomi's experience on the road. The authors also propose that this story of two women from distinctly different places who are able to fuse their goals and help each other survive, points to plausible cultural reconciliation in the Middle East and beyond. This book is intended for any university class studying the Hebrew Bible, courses at synagogues or churches, and women interested in tracing female spiritual traditions. Women on the Biblical Road is an important book for the Women's Spirituality Movement and will surely appeal to the contemporary woman interested in reconstructing women's traditions.

University Press of America The Romantic Tradition: German Literature and Music in the Nineteenth Century
Literature and Music in the Romantic Movementóthe twenty-four literary historians, musicologists, and philosophers who have contributed to this book have taken the conjunction "and" seriously. The eminently Romantic goal of unifying these two arts is scrutinized from several different angles in the attempt to break new critical ground both on aesthetic principles and in re-approaching some well-known works in "mixed genres" typical of the movement. Hans Schulte reminds us in his retrospect that what was a longed-for goal for the Romantics had once been a given, a fait accompli, to the ancient Greeks. But the book is not backward looking; on the contrary, it reveals both the aesthetic revolution at the beginning of the nineteenth century and its far reaching impact - as the title indicates - through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. The editors from the "Preface". Co-published with McMaster University.

University Press of America Image, Perception, and the Making of U.S.-China Relations
Image, Perception, and the Making of U.S.-China Relations examines major events in the history of the relationship between the U.S. and China to show the development and effects of national images and perceptions. These essays expose the effects of ideology as represented through foreign policy and the actions of leaders, as well as the role of the media and governments in shaping public opinion and attitudes. They show the evolution of the influential forces from the nineteenth century through the twentieth century. In each country, a small group of people has always controlled these forces by manipulating the power of the media and governments. The nature of this situation changed national perceptions as power often moved from one small group to another. As a result of manipulating the images and perceptions of each country, these biased and untrue views have inevitably led to conflict between the two countries.

University Press of America Political Wives, Veiled Lives
"Views on the "rules of the game" as seen by political wives are assembled here by one who personally "experienced the brutal world of politics." The author, who participated in her husband's failed gubernatorial contest in Colorado in 1986 poignantly underscores the demands made on wives and families during campaigns that are bruising both emotionally and physically. Schuck's diary entries note minglings with the Bushes, Quayles, et al., juxtaposed with her wry comments about the role of spouses whose husbands prove not to be the voters' choice. Among the political wives interviewed are the first ladies of the Zuni and Navajo nations, Native American women who are shown to define their world differently from other political wives.
