Xanti Schawinsky (1904–1979) war ein Meister der Improvisation. Ob im Bereich Bühnengestaltung, als Fotograf oder künstlerischer Schöpfer von Ausstellungsbauten und großflächigen Fotomontagen, seine überraschenden Ideen begleiteten ihn vom Dessauer Bauhaus über das Black Mountain College bis an die New Yorker Universität. Während seine späten Arbeiten inzwischen durch Ausstellungen und Publikationen bekannt sind, blieb sein Frühwerk nahezu unentdeckt. Neue Dokumente aus dem Nachlass – Briefe von Walter Gropius, autobiografische Aufzeichnungen und ein Fundus zahlreicher Aufnahmen aus dem Magdeburger Stadtarchiv – erlauben einen unverstellten Blick auf diesen Protagonisten des Dessauer Bauhauses. Die Publikation richtet daher den Fokus auf Schawinskys Frühwerk, seine Anstellung als Leiter der Graphikabteilung des Magdeburger Hochbauamts ab 1929, seine Entwürfe für Theaterbühnen in Zwickau und seine gemeinsam mit Gropius geschaffenen Fotomontagen für die Deutsche Bauausstellung 1931 sowie den Pennsylvania Pavillon für die Weltausstellung 1939.
