Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The (Not So) Secret Lives of Food Packaging
Tracing developments from the classical period to the early industrial revolution and beyond, Anne Murcott provides us with an accessible and entertaining social history of food packaging. From tin cans, glass jars and bottles, plastic trays and stretch-wrap, Murcott shows the importance of food packaging for global food systems. As a pioneering excursion into the many aspects of the history of food packaging, the book examines shifts from domestic to commercial production, the emergence of associated technologies, changes in retailing, implications for policy and practice, along with current concerns about overpackaging. Taking a wide historical and geographical angle, Murcott draws on sources such as trade magazines, manufacturers’ archives, company histories, packaging textbooks, histories of international trade and interviews with key industry ‘insiders’. Written by a leading figure in the field, this book will benefit students of social studies of food production and consumption, of cultural studies, as well as researchers and those interested in the history of food.

Springer International Publishing AG A Police Officer’s Guide to Academic Research
This book highlights how the practical skills of the police officer can be transferred into the realm of academic research and support them in becoming part of the evidence-based policing movement. It starts by exploring the professionalisation of the police service through higher education accreditation and the different methodologies of social research practice. Using operational comparisons and a little humour, it guides the reader through the swamp of concepts and processes, such as ethical approval, research paradigms and data gathering and analysis. It then takes them on a journey of reflection and reflexivity, challenging their own perspective on policing and working within the wider criminal justice sector and how they can make a valuable contribution to the development of policing practice.

Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd Foolish delusions
Foolish delusions is an adventure. Taking seriously the idea that writing can transform your life, the narrative works as a double helix. One strand explores the growing confidence, skill, and personal courage of a woman (Anna) who longs for connection with the past, and - through engagement with a writing course - finds this connection through extraordinary archaeological creativity (which demands the archive, the imagination, and uncovering of personal memories). The second strand unfurls the story of the ancestor to whom Anna is guided by her writing, an ancestor whose nineteenth-century life powerfully illuminates the meanings of gender, sexuality, and colonialism in Cape Town. Despite the philosophical complexity, the novel is gentle, smoothly crafted and full of insightful, delicate reflection. Those interested in writing will find the workbook lessons enable their own life-writing. Those wanting a 'good story' will discover in Anna's search for her ancestor a compelling and historically well-rooted tale of love, loss, and transcendence.

Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd Saving a Stranger’s Life: The Diary of an Emergency
Anne Biccard has worked as an emergency doctor in Johannesburg for more than 30 years. It is a job that is both terrifying and thrilling, where death can be outwitted by skill and quick thinking, and the pressure eased by dark humour. The coronavirus, however, has added another dimension of fear. In this heartwarming and at times hilarious memoir she recounts some of the cases that have burst in through her doors, such as the woman who mistook her Dettol for beer and the man who tried to run down his cardiologist. There is sadness, too, as she remembers the patients who didn’t make it. Above all, she writes of the camaraderie and dogged determination of health workers holding fast in the face of the Covid-19 nightmare as they battle, every day, to save a stranger’s life.

Ashmolean Museum Box of Delights: Wood Engravings from the Ashmolean Collection
The Ashmolean Museum houses one of the most extensive collections of wood engravings in the world. The collection effectively began with the gift in 1964, by Arthur Mitchell, of over 3,000 prints, including a large group of wood engravings. During the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded remarkably with acquisitions of large groups of prints, often as gifts from the artists, resulted in a succession of monographic exhibitions on some of the most important wood engravers. They included John Farleigh (1986), John Buckland Wright (1990), Clare Leighton (1992), Monica Poole (1993) and Anne Desmet (1998). A key point in this period of expansion was the acquisition of a comprehensive body of work by Gertrude Hermes and Blair Hughes-Stanton in 1995 from the artists’ family, which resulted in a memorable exhibition organised by Katharine Eustace. More recently, the Ashmolean has formed a close partnership with the SWE, and has been keeping the collection up to date by acquiring work by members, both at the Society’s annual exhibition and privately.
