A Thriving Modernism celebrates the remarkable careers of architects Wendell Lovett and Arne Bystrom and their contributions to modernism and to the architectural legacy of the Pacific Northwest. Wendell Lovett joined the University of Washington faculty in 1948; Arne Bystrom was one of his first students. Their work, now encompassing half a century, has been published in Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, Denmark, England, Brazil, Switzerland, and France, and their reputations in these places are established. Yet in the United States, despite their being elected Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 1978 and 1985, respectively, they remain little known outside the Northwest. Both men believe deeply in the emotional dimension of architecture; both are dedicated to expressive detail, executed through exquisite craftsmanship; both have been offered remarkable sites on which to build. In a series of domestic projects, each has found, in his own way, a much enriched modernism. Lovett draws influences from modern Scandinavia and Italy, from Alvar Aalto and Santiago Calatrava. Bystrom acknowledges debts to medieval Scandinavia and the ancient Far East, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Greene and Greene. Lovett’s dedication to industrialized materials and methods is informed by gesture and anthropomorphic metaphor. Bystrom, devoted to the natural and the handcrafted, develops an abstract discipline of geometry and physics into a crisp structural concept. Lovett’s manipulation of space, light, and mechanistic detail yields a richness undreamed of in early modernism, while Bystrom’s delight in wood as inspiration is comparable to that of ancient Asian crafts. This lavishly illustrated book sets forth the extraordinary work of these two architects. Artist Arne Quinze’s installation, My Secret Garden, encourages visitors to explore their own mental place where they keep their most personal thoughts, memories, desires and secrets. My Secret Garden is complementary to his other work, Rock Strangers, on the coastline in Ostend, which is a public confrontation with alienation in the centre of the city. Quinze invited Belgian author Saskia de Coster to capture the alienation which the Rock Strangers exude, as well as the intimacy of My Secret Garden (exhibited at Kunsthal Rotterdam) in contemporary stories and distinctive film footage as the projects were running at the same time. The documentaries are explorations of both projects, through interviews about Quinze’s work, unique footage of the making of the installations and ‘uncanny’ performances. The outcome is a quest for the traces of these works in each and every one of us. The architecture by Arne Jacobsen and Otto Weitling is of outstanding importance for post-war modernism in Germany. The calibre of their projects, however, has been forgotten. When the notion of ‘alternative facts’ and the alleged dawning of a ‘postfactual’ world entered public discourse, social anthropologists found themselves in unexpectedly familiar territory. In theirempirical experience, fact—knowledge accepted as true—derives its salience from social mechanisms of legitimization, thereby demonstrating a deep interconnection with power and authority. In thisperspective, fact is a continually contested and volatile social category.Due to the specific histories of their colonial and post-independence experience, African societies offer a particularly broad array of insights into social processes of juxtaposition, opposition, and even outright competition between different postulated authorities. The contributions to the present volume explore the variety of ways in which authority is contested in Southern and Eastern Africa, investigating localized discourses on which institution, what kind of knowledge, or whose expertise is accepted as authoritative, thus highlighting the specificities and pluralities in ‘modern’ societies.
