The 8C Competizione was launched in 2008, a synthesis of the new “Alfa Romeo philosophy”, the marque’s strategy to reaffirm its uniqueness and ability to bring together emotion, engineering and aerodynamic efficiency and the exaltation of driving pleasure. For the fourth consecutive year, Sebastian Vettel has won the Formula 1 World Championship for drivers. In his 23-year career at Pininfarina, Leonardo Fioravanti, who was first a designer and architect, then managing director and director general of 'Studi & Ricerche' department, created some of the most beautiful Ferraris of all time; they ranged from the 1965 250 LM sports coupe Speciale to the immortal 1968 Daytona through to the 1975 308 GTB and GTS and the 1984 288 GTO, as well as the P5 and P6 of 1968. While continuing his Ferrari essay during his Pininfarina career, Fioravanti also guided the creation of numerous other projects, among them the Dino road car, the 1980 Pinin four-door prototype and went on to the 1984 Testarossa and the 1987 F40. He worked for the Fiat Group from 1988 until 1991, during which time he took on the roles of deputy director general of Ferrari, later became responsible for advanced design CRF and then head of the Fiat Styling Centre. In 1987, he founded Fioravanti srl, an architectural studio, and in 1991 he extended his services to industry, in particular the design of means of transport. Images of an epoch, designs from his own personal archive never previously seen and, above all, a passionate first person account. Those are the key elements of this outstanding book which, through the creations of Leonardo Fioravanti, covers over 50 years of the history of automobile style and culture.

The American Fred Merkel riding a Honda won the first two editions in 1988 and 1989. This was followed by a Ducati triple with titles for Raymond Roche in 1990 and Doug Polen in 1991 and '92. In the years that followed the likes of Carl Fogarty, Troy Corser, Colin Edwards and Troy Bayliss came to the fore aboard equally well-known bikes also raced in the same period by Pier Francesco Chili, perhaps the best-known Italian Superbike rider prior to the advent of Biaggi and Melandri. A place of absolute significance during Italy's golden age of hillclimbing has to go to the Bologna-Raticosa. As well as the pioneering first event way back in 1926, the hillclimb was at its peak from 1950 until 1969. Its winners included Bracco, Cabianca, Palmieri, Castellotti, Govoni, Herrmann, Moioli or Noris, Ortner and Venturi. And the cars they drove included Ferraris, OSCAs, Maseratis and Abarths. So along its more than 43 km route - it was reduced to not much more than 32 km from 1962 - raced some of the greatest drivers of the period. Then, after a long silence, the Bologna made its comeback in 2001, first as an invitation race and then as a round in the Italian Vintage Car Speed Championship. The man who tells the story of this great classic is Carlo Dolcini, author of a number of books on the Mille Miglia, who covers again this historic event, and Francesco Amante, the tireless organiser and promoter of the most recent Bologna events.
