In recent years, the ways in which food is produced, distributed, and consumed have emerged as prominent health and social issues. With rising concern about rates of obesity, food systems have attracted the attention of state actors, leading to both innovative and controversial public health interventions, such as citywide soda bans, “veggie prescription” initiatives, and farm-to-school programs. At the same time, social movement activism has emerged focused on issues related to food and health, including movements for food justice, food safety, farm worker’s rights, and community control of land for agricultural production. It has been long awaited, but Florian Hüttner, collaborator for 25 years and co-operator of the gallery for landscape art in Hamburg, finally has a first survey exhibition. Curated by Till Krause, the show resembles a well-tended garden. Boskette, bushes, waysides, fences and a viewing platform arranged in the huge space of the former Wandelhalle in Bad Tölz. Palmer's work blends word and image, anticipating Raymond Pettibon and David Shrigley New York- and Florida-based artist Roger Clay Palmer (born 1947) has been painting, drawing, and writing for over 50 years. Inspired by the Southern oral tradition of his youth, his experiences in the army as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and Japanese haiga and Zenga, Palmer blends word and image, anticipating artists like Raymond Pettibon and David Shrigley, to a darkly humorous, sometimes difficult effect. Palmer’s witty, grisly animals, figures and cityscapes are paired with phrases like “a lightning storm while buried with your cat” or “there was a time of day when the bulls and I got real bad ideas at exactly the same time.” Together they reveal, in the artist’s words, the “anger, rage, longing, sadness, courage and grace” in American culture. With a focus on recent work, Roger Clay Palmer brings together 60 exemplary paintings on paper and organizes them thematically, with sections focused on his depictions of animals, eyes, landscapes and war. Including an essay by curator David Norr, this long-overdue monograph is an invitation into Palmer’s intense and unruly world, full of idiosyncratic insight and biting wisdom.

In contemporary society, ‘the visual’ becomes a traversing denominator passing through the most diverse articulations: from new media, branding, drone vision and robot culture to cityscapes, design and art. The transvisuality project in three volumes promotes the turn away from the predominance of a focus on representations in studies of visual culture. Volume 2 introduces visual organisation in-the-making as an effect of manifold traversing articulations and interconnected practices: how is the ‘stuff’ of visuality—an image like a photograph, an incident on TV, a cinematic oeuvre—intertwined in a range of cultural practices, transformed and transgressed by them in transvisuality. The aim of the book is to map how visual organizations are traversing culture as articulatory practices in situ. The resulting case studies take their departure in different materialities and agencies of empirical, embedded visuality—from canvas to drone camera—and illustrate how transvisuality evolves in and around publics and communities on the one hand and through bodies and media on the other. The visual articulations analysed in this volume span from cellphone videos to forensic images, from biomedia to robots, from bunker ruins to Kalighat pat paintings, from a Palestinian wedding dress to video footage of unknown strangers in a metro, from the Gorgon Stare to movies becoming art installations.
