This is an ethnographic study of a community of Mongolian herders who have been undergoing dramatic environmental and social transformations since 1980. It provides a rare window of observation into a fascinating and important, though remote and relatively understudied, region of modern China, and documents some of the unintended harmful consequences of decollectivization and economic development. Initially, the book presents a case study of land degradation and shows how competing social and cultural forces at the local, national, and international level actively shape that process. More broadly, it focuses on local experiences of modernization and the ways that marginalized people creatively appropriate alien technologies to serve their own ethnic identity and cultural renewal. The book aims to deepen our understanding of environmental change as a social process by exploring significant tensions between such symbolic dichotomies as Chinese/Mongol, farmer/herder, private/collective, development/conservation, Western/Asian, and scientific/indigenous. It argues that the reconstruction of local landscape cannot be separated from the social context of economic insecurity and political fear, nor from the cultural context of group identity and environmental symbolism. Ideologically informed perceptions of the land prove to be highly relevant in both shaping and contesting international development agendas, national grassland policies, and the daily practices of local production. In presenting the full range of material and symbolic stakes now in play on the Chinese grasslands, the book demonstrates that human-land interactions involve social dimensions on a global scale of widely underestimated complexity. Throughout, the author draws from his extensive fieldwork to enrich his study with poignant (and sometimes humorous) anecdotes and biographical sketches.

Nach Band 2 im letzten Jahr werden in Band 1 nun die ersten elf Jahre von Herzog & de Meuron dokumentiert. ln diesem Zeitraum von 1978-88 wurde eine methodologische Basis erarbeitet, auf der die Großprojekte der darauffolgenden Jahre aufbauen konnten. Waren Bauten wie das «blaue Haus» bei Basel durch eine naturbezogene Bildhaftigkeit geprägt, so traten Herzog & de Meuron fast gleichzeitig mit Entwürfen hervor, die so verdichtet waren, dass Erscheinungsweise, Funktion und Struktur zusammenfielen. Das Lagerhaus für die Firma Ricola in Laufen ist mit seiner Hülle aus geschichteten Eternitplatten hierfür exemplarisch. Ein weiteres zentrales Thema der ersten Werkdekade ist denn auch die grundsätzliche Neubewertung von Materialien. Ein Haus in einem Garten bei Basel wurde innen und außen ganz aus verschiedenen Sperrhölzern gefügt, die Außenwände eines Wohnhauses im ligurischen Tavole sind aus Bruchsteinen geschichtet. Für ein Laborgebäude in Basel war eine Glashülle vorgesehen, die sich teilweise vom Baukörper ablöst; ein Wohnhaus mit Galerieraum lebt aus der vielfältigen Verwendung von Beton. Bereits bei den Frühwerken ist also ein ausgesprochenes Interesse an der Gestaltung der Fassade erkennbar. Die Auseinandersetzung mit übergreifenden stadtplanerischen Aspekten manifestierte sich erstmals deutlich in der Siedlung Pilotengasse am Stadtrand von Wien, die Herzog & de Meuron zusammen mit Adolf Krischanitz und Otto Steidle 1987-92 entwarfen und realisierten. Das pragmatische Denken für einen spezifischen Ort und Zweck in der sich rasch wandelnden Gegenwart, das den architektonischen Diskurs von Herzog & de Meuron in besonderer Weise auszeichnet, wird im Buch durch verschiedene theoretische Beiträge abgestützt. Wie im bereits erschienenen Band 2 werden auch im Band 1 die zentralen Projekte ausführlich vorgestellt. Our homeless fill America's streets and shelters; the comfort of home is increasingly threatened by urban violence; and the world-wide plight of those exiled or fleeing from their homelands due to civil war, starvation, or political repression seems relentless. The idea of home, bound as it is in family and in the roles of men and women, has a deep resonance that is not fully captured by its use as a social and political slogan. What is its history and ideology? What has it meant and how has its meaning changed? Home moves us perhaps most powerfully as absence or negation. Homelessness and exile are among the worst of conditions, bringing with them alienation, estrangement, and the feelings of greatest despair.
