Hirmer Verlag Mack: Painting
“There is no substitute for the happiness which colours give me.” After a long break, Heinz Mack has been focusing intensively on painting again for over thirty years. A cross-section of his "Chromatische Konstellationen" from 1991 until the present day shows how he translates the greatest possible purity of colour, light and immateriality into a broad spectrum of colour sequences and structures. Texts by Heinz Mack and Robert Fleck illuminate the essence of these colour worlds. Colour as light and light as colour – this represents, as it were, the nucleus of Mack’s painting. Within this premise he offers us a wide variety: chapters on, for example, the primacy of colour, atmosphere and nature, space, movement and geometric forms show the fascinating bandwidth of his work. The volume closes with an unusual undertaking: in a personal juxtaposition with works from art history from Duccio to Barnett Newman, the artist grants us an insight into his collective pictorial memory.

Hatje Cantz Heinz Mack
The Waldfrieden Sculpture Park is honouring the great painter and sculptor Heinz Mack on his 90th birthday with an exhibition devoted exclusively to his sculptural work. In its three exhibition halls and in the open grounds, the sculpture park presents 50 sculptures by Heinz Mack, including numerous works that have never been shown publicly before. Accompanying the exhibition is this comprehensive catalogue in German and English with numerous illustrations from the exhibition, a foreword by Anthony Cragg, a preface by Dr. Thomas A. Lange, two statements by Heinz Mack and essays by Heinz-Norbert Jocks, Norman Rosenthal, Corinna Thierolf and Jon Wood. The essays - analogous to the illustration section, which shows photographs from all three exhibition pavilions and from the outdoor area - are devoted to the artist's wealth of forms and diversity of materials on the basis of the exhibited stone works, steles made of wood and metal, metal reliefs and screens.

‘His book is a joy to read, full of homespun wisdom and hilarious asides’ Independent____________________Where do comedians come from? Why is it that one person is a funny bloke down the pub while another actually makes a living by standing up in front of an audience telling jokes? And where does all that material come from? Well, young Lee McKillop used to wonder that too.___________________ Growing up in his parents’ pub, small and wiry in a world of bigger and chunkier specimens, Lee quickly learned that cracking jokes was a way to get attention. After a somewhat random series of jobs, which included being Red Rum’s stableboy and a bingo hall barman, it was as a Great Yarmouth holiday camp entertainer that he had his first crack at telling jokes on stage. It got him some laughs, the sack and a punch in the face.*Now, as Lee Mack, he’s one of our best loved and most successful comedians, both as a live stand-up and on television. In Mack the Life, Lee tells the story of how he got there and gives extraordinary insight into what really makes comics tick. Hilarious and brilliant, it’s the kind of book which reminds you why you learned to read in the first place.*Nearly.

Hirmer Verlag Heinz Mack: Licht / Light / Lumière
Light is the original phenomenon which has been made visible in the works of Heinz Mack. The search for the possibilities for visualising light kept the multi - faceted oeuvre of this artist from the Zero circle ev er open to new ideas for half a century and provided inspiration with regard to both form and technique. There is nothing which makes people so aware of life as our existence in light. Heinz Mack (*1931) was addicted to light as if to a magic potion which inspired him to innovative experiments with highly varied experimental arrangements. His works break through the traditional genres of art and add unknown techniques and materials to the creative aspect. This book was compiled by the art ist himself from his entire creative oeuvre. It reveals the spectrum of natural and artificial light as it can only be experienced in the imagination of a mystic who commands confident control of the rational means of the modern age.

Penguin Books Ltd The Testament of Gideon Mack
The Testament of Gideon Mack is James Robertson's acclaimed novel exploring faith and belief. For Gideon Mack, faithless minister, unfaithful husband and troubled soul, the existence of God, let alone the Devil, is no more credible than that of ghosts or fairies. Until the day he falls into a gorge and is rescued by someone who might just be Satan himself.Mack's testament - a compelling blend of memoir, legend, history, and, quite probably, madness - recounts one man's emotional crisis, disappearance, resurrection and death. It also transports you into an utterly mesmerising exploration of the very nature of belief.'Fascinating, extraordinary, strange, rich' Sunday Telegraph'Overwhelmingly compassionate and thought-provoking. Demands another read' Irvine Welsh, Guardian'Hugely enjoyable, very funny, deeply refreshing . . . its touch of devilry makes it even more of a joy' Herald'Fabulous . . . a work of the highest literary quality' Scotland on Sunday'Astonishingly accomplished, utterly compelling from start to finish . . . could well be the best novel published anywhere this year' Big Issue'James Robertson is a brilliant novelist. Hirmer Verlag African Art from the Mack Collection
Like many great artists, Heinz Mack also found inspiration in African art. His artistic expeditions into the African desert and his encounters with the special light, the people and the architecture have continued to influence his art to this day. His collection of African art is being published for the first time. Since 1955 Heinz Mack has undertaken artistic expeditions into the deserts of Africa. It was here that he created his Sahara Project, with which he became a pioneer of Land Art. During his travels he purchased works by African artists which moved him, aroused his curiosity about foreign objects and which were then absorbed naturally into his life and work. The ornamental, sculptural and woven works by unknown African artists inspired Mack, and their power has been integrated into his own works on a subconscious level. The collection includes sculptures and objects made of wood, clay or metal – materials which are also characteristic for the reception of Mack’s art.

Hirmer Verlag Heinz Mack: A 21st century artist
Heinz Mack (*1931) has been working as a sculptor and painter for more than sixty years. From the ZERO period in around 1960 to the present day he has created a wide-ranging work whose essential aspects, such as the significance of light, structure and colour are portrayed with often surprising perspectives. The authors accompany Mack in his constant search for a new concept of art, thereby discovering little-known connections to Minimal Art, Land Art, Yves Klein and Constantin Brancusi. The journey through Mack’s rich oeuvre culminates finally in his passionate plea for the “idea of beauty in the 21st century”.Heinz Mack is an artist who has left his mark on our times. He has made a pioneering contribution to the question of a new concept of art, which has been of fundamental importance since the post-war period. This volume offers for the first time a monograph with an overview of Mack’s philosophy of art as well as his multi-faceted oeuvre: from ZERO and the legendary Sahara Project to light art and his most recent paintings.

Hirmer Verlag Mack. Sculptures (Bilingual edition): 2003–2020
Apart from the range of materials such as natural stone, metal, wood, plaster, sand and glass, the sculptures of Heinz Mack are characterised by their elemental, powerful nature in connection with light and/or movement. In his late works the artist continues to develop themes from earlier work phases, such as the stele with its ability to transform light and determine space. Typical of the last twenty years is his increased focus on sculptures of stone like granite or marble, sometimes of monumental size. Languages: English and German

Hirmer Verlag Mack - Sahara: From Zero to Land Art: Heinz Mack's "Sahara Project" (1959-1997)
Heinz Mack’s Sahara Project is legendary. In 1968 he installed for the first time light columns with a height of up to 11 metres which reflected and mirrored the glaring sunlight in the Tunisian desert. Nature and object fused to create an artwork of breath-taking beauty. This comprehensive volume records the history and ideas of this spectacular project over four decades. Sophia Sotke’s in-depth presentation traces an arc from the conception of the project in 1958/59 via the sensational film Tele-Mack (1968) and the subsequent “Expedition into Artificial Gardens” of 1976 in Algeria andGreenland to the artistic experiments which Mack carried out in the Wahiba Desert in Oman in 1997. The uestion regarding the importance of the Sahara Project in Mack’s oeuvre is examined together with his role in the development of Land Art. Hitherto unpublished photos of the expeditions into the desert and the Arctic regions provide new insights.

MACK A1 - The Great North Road
A1 - The Great North Road was Paul Graham's first book, published in 1983. Despite the UK having a vibrant photographic scene at the time, there were only handful of monographic books - Chris Killip and Martin Parr had one each - and no dedicated publishers or distributors. Graham had to self-publish A1, but as the first colour book, it had a startling impact on British photography. Uniting the tradition of social documentary with the fresh approach of new colour, A1 - The Great North Road was transformative on photography in the UK and paved the way for a new generation of British colour photographers to emerge, from Nick Waplington to Anna Fox, Richard Billingham to Tom Wood. Spanning the full length of England and into Edinburgh, Graham travelled repeatedly along the 'Great North Road' with a large format camera, to record the people, buildings, and landscape of early 1980's Britain. Now 40 years old, this book is as much art as it is a historical document of the years of Margaret Thatcher’s government and the UK’s declining industrial base. Graham went on to complete Beyond Caring (1985) and Troubled Land (1986), both of which became iconic bodies of work. Originally self-published and now rare, Graham's 1980's trilogy of books will be re-published over the coming years by MACK.

MACK The Complete Essays 1973-1991
The Complete Essays 1973-1991 is a long-awaited collection of short, allusive texts on the curiosities of photography written by the great Italian artist, Luigi Ghirri. Ghirri's writings spiral outwards from his practice, intuitively exploring the subjects at the core of his images - the themes of identity, time, memory, vision, representation, and sense of place. With a taste for the eclectic, he interweaves references as varied as Prince, Dylan, Hendrix, McLuhan, Mallarme, Gulliver, Eggleston, Evans, neo-realist film, Cezanne and Pessoa. Together, the essays offer a unique and comprehensive treatise on the history and theory of photography. Above all, they constitute a special form of autobiography for someone whose ironic wit and gentle style has trickled down to so much of contemporary photography. Luigi Ghirri (1943-1992) started writing about photography from the moment he became a photographer: for his own publications, for Italian magazines and newspapers, as well as private reflections committed to paper, where his thoughts would settle and then often depart in new directions. Born in Scandiano in 1943, Luigi Ghirri spent his working life in the Emilia Romagna region, where he produced one of the most open and layered bodies of work in the history of photography. He was published and exhibited extensively both in Italy and internationally and was at the height of his career at the time of his death in 1992. His first book, Kodachrome (1978), an avant-garde manifesto for the medium of photography and a landmark in his own remarkable oeuvre, was re-published by MACK in 2012.

MACK Sleeping by the Mississippi
Sleeping by the Mississippi by Alec Soth is one of the defining publications in the photobook era. First published by Steidl in 2004, it was Soth’s first book, sold through three print runs, and established him as one of the leading lights of contemporary photographic practice. This is the second printing of the MACK edition and includes two new photographs that were not included in the Steidl versions of the book. Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Sleeping by the Mississippi captures America’s iconic yet oft-neglected ‘third coast’. Soth’s richly descriptive, large-format colour photographs present an eclectic mix of individuals, landscapes, and interiors. Sensuous in detail and raw in subject, Sleeping by the Mississippi elicits a consistent mood of loneliness, longing, and reverie. ‘In the book’s 46 ruthlessly edited pictures’, writes Anne Wilkes Tucker in the original essay published in the book, ‘Soth alludes to illness, procreation, race, crime, learning, art, music, death, religion, redemption, politics, and cheap sex.’ Like Robert Frank’s classic The Americans, Sleeping by the Mississippi merges a documentary style with poetic sensibility. The Mississippi is less the subject of the book than its organizing structure. Not bound by a rigid concept or ideology, the series is created out of a quintessentially American spirit of wanderlust. Sixteen years since the book was first published, the artist’s lyrical view has undoubtedly acquired a nuanced significance – one in which hope, fear, desire and regret coalesce in the evocative journey along this mythic river.

MACK lick of tongue, rub of finger, on soft wound
Keisha Scarville has spent much of her life tracing routes of movement between the Caribbean and America in order to investigate her own lineage. Attempting to understand how notions of belonging and identity are formed and structured, her image-making practice visualises the latent narratives inscribed within the thresholds of memory across generations. This first publication by Scarville unfolds as a sprawling, hypnotic visual essay, evocatively interweaving the artist’s striking black-and-white photography with archival imagery, passages from books, collages, personal texts, and film stills. Moving between practice and archive, Scarville uses the form of the artist’s book to reflect on what it means to create new genealogies by disrupting conventional, linear histories. The result is a journey through a multiplicity of personal and historical narratives of the Black diaspora. With this book, Scarville reflects on a process of becoming shaped by the diasporic imagination of Black people throughout the world. Accompanied by a text by poet and author Harmony Holiday

MACK Topographies: Aerial Surveys of the American Landscape
Topographies: Aerial Surveys of the American Landscape pre-sents the latest body of work from Stephen Shore: a series of photographs shot by drone from 2020 onwards, which reveal in arresting detail the interplay of natural and man-made landscapes in Montana, North Carolina, New York, and beyond. In this new body of work, Shore revisits the original ambitions of the renowned 1975 exhibition 'New Topographics', using a new aerial viewpoint to consider afresh the concerns of the movement - the objective, the commonplace, and the relationship of the natural and man-made in the American landscape - reflecting on how these might be applied in the twenty-first century. As much as exploring the formal possibilities of the aerial photo-graph, Topographies displays a glorious dedication to detail and surprise, in which the slightest bend of a river or turn of a shadow uncovers the textures and colours of America's urban and suburban landscapes, all investigated with Shore's signature rigour. With essays by Noah Chasin and Richard B. Woodward

MACK Olay
Meaning 'event' or 'incident', Olay is a powerful chronicle of a tumultuous decade in Turkey, tirelessly documented by Emin OEzmen. This first book by OEzmen is a retrospective of his work to date, recounting the photographer's homeland in a ceaseless state of turmoil, hit by dramatic events: a failed coup d'etat, popular uprisings, natural disasters, political purges, and ongoing military operations. This vivid and fast-paced series of black-and- white photographs is punctuated with moments of calm in the form of meditative colour images and personal texts. Despite the omnipresent tension, a feeling of graciousness and warmth emerges from OEzmen's work, which unfolds to form a nuanced and necessary comment on the Turkish state and the sentiments of its people. 'We are constantly being tossed around between violence and quiet daily life. Turkey gives no respite. Never a week without a drama, never a month without a major event. Olay is a documentation of Turkey, on the brink of violence and grace. Here, nothing is simple, everything intertwines and clashes, the beautiful as well as the ugly, sadness as well as joy.' Emin OEzmen The book includes an extensive timeline introduced by Piotr Zalewski, Turkey correspondent for The Economist, as well as personal texts written by OEzmen, and is co-edited with Cloe Kerhoas.

MACK JOKE
The latest collection of work by Talia Chetrit riffs insouciantly on themes of life, death, and birth through a variety of visual languages. In 'JOKE', Chetrit brings together family photos, street photography, still lifes, selections from the artist's teenage archive, and expansive self-portraits involving a cast of characters who feature as both engaged and unwitting collaborators.Referencing a wide range of photographic tropes and traditions, Chetrit studies the power dynamics between photographer and subject as they spar and collude. 'JOKE' deals in high humour and deadly seriousness, plunging us into a world in which social roles are inverted, norms are examined, judgements of taste and value are suspended, and everything coalesces, dead and alive, true and false, sincere and affected.

MACK Golden Apple of the Sun
In the period leading up to the November 3, 2020 elections in the United States, Teju Cole began to photograph his kitchen counter in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Working in the still life tradition of Chardin, Cezanne, and the Dutch masters, as well as such contemporary photographers as Laura Letinsky and Jan Groover, he photographed every day over the course of five weeks. Unlike those illustrious forbears, Cole left his arrangements entirely to chance, “the bowls and plates moving in their unpredictable constellations.” What emerges is a surprising portrait, across time, of one kitchen counter in one home at a time of social, cultural, and political upheaval. Alongside the photographs is a long written essay, as wide-ranging in its concerns—hunger, fasting, mourning, slavery, intimacy, painting, poetry and the history of photography—as the photographs are delimited in theirs. The text and photographic sequences are interspersed with an anonymous handwritten eighteenth century cookbook from Cambridge. Golden Apple of the Sun is a luminous and humane work, presented with the formal boldness and oblique intelligence we have come to expect from Teju Cole.

MACK Who is Changed and Who is Dead
In Who is Changed and Who is Dead, Ahndraya Parlato uses the life-changing events of her mother's suicide and the birth of her children as the genesis for an expansive project exploring the contradictory and complex conditions of motherhood. The resulting image-text book threads the political and historical with the deeply personal, bringing together narratives from across genres and generations to create a nuanced and compelling body of work. Interwoven with her own writings are still lives, sculptures, photograms made from her mother's ashes, and reenactments of 19th century 'hidden mother' images. Included amongst these are Parlato's photographs of her children, who are shown with both a fidelity to maternal intimacy and a more distanced contemplation. Within this complexity Parlato strives to find clarity around the fundamental questions of parenthood, mortality, and gender. Are her contemporary fears any different than the fears felt by mothers throughout history? Which anxieties are specific to having female children? And how is motherhood itself a construction?
