Transporter Bridges are a legacy of the closing years of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th, and served a brief but important need. The huge increase in road transport, however, quickly rendered them obsolete, and although many were planned, little more than twenty-one were ever completed across the world - five of which were in Britain. Just nine still stand in their original form and currently only five are currently still in use - one each in Spain and Germany, two in the UK, one in Argentina - unused since the 1960s, and only recently returned to service in 2018 after restoration - and the last surviving 'pont transbordeur' in France returned to service in 2019 after major works. The second of Germany's surviving transporters is currently awaiting repair after a ship collided with it. But is the transporter bridge about to undergo a surprising renaissance? Proposals exist for three new bridges, all in France - at Nantes, Marseille and Brest - to replace some of those lost during and after the Second World War. This demands the development of a transdisciplinary philosophy of knowledge as much common sense as it is cultured in the humanities and the sciences. Such an epistemological and ontological framework is also developed in this volume. Cybersemiotics not only builds a bridge between science and culture, it provides a framework that encompasses them both. The cybersemiotic framework offers a platform for a new level of global dialogue between knowledge systems, including a view of science that does not compete with religion but offers the possibility for mutual and fruitful exchange.

Kingston upon Hull Corporation Transport set about replacing its trams with trolleybuses in the 1930s, but the war meant that trams did not finish until 1945. Motorbuses took over all operations in 1965. The fine blue and white buses of the municipality were a feature of the city until 1994, when the stripes of the Stagecoach Group began to be applied. The area’s other major operator, East Yorkshire Motor Services, can trace its history back to 1919, though the name was not registered until 1926. The company’s buses were soon to be found throughout the East Riding, with the double-deck vehicles easily recognisable due to having specially profiled roofs to pass through Beverley Bar. EYMS became part of the National Bus Company and was later purchased by its management team. It soon became the UK’s largest independent. The company was sold to the Go-Ahead Group in 2018. Today, the smart and modern fleet can be seen throughout the county and beyond. A few other operators have been seen in East Yorkshire, with Lincolnshire Road Car serving Goole and crossing the Humber Bridge. Various small independent companies have also featured, most notable of which was Connor & Graham of Easington.

The two romances translated in this volume, the Roman de Thèbes and the Roman d’Eneas, form, along with the Roman de Troie by Benoît de Sainte-Maure, a group of texts that are of considerable importance within French and European literature and culture. Composed between c. 1150 and c. 1165, these romances create a bridge between classical tales (the Thèbes is based on the Thebaid of Statius, the Eneas on the Aeneid of Virgil) and the burgeoning vernacular romances, represented especially by Chrétien de Troyes. As a group, these three works are frequently known as the romances of antiquity (romans d’antiquité) and they introduce into French literature the dominant contemporary themes of chivalry and love. They are set against a feudal and courtly background in which themes such as war, prowess inheritance and the possession of land are crucial. As they adapt their Latin sources, these romances, especially the Eneas, exploit the works of Ovid, especially in the presentation of the theme of love, and they also make use of the principles of rhetorical composition as studied in the schools (both romances contain remarkable examples of descriptions of both people and objects).This is the first volume to contain two complete translations of the three romances of antiquity. The translation of the Roman d’Eneas is the first English translation of this text since that of John A. Yunck in 1974.
