Yale University Press N. C. Wyeth: New Perspectives
A fresh and surprising overview of N. C. Wyeth’s career that considers the full range of the multifaceted artist’s oeuvre N. C. Wyeth (1882–1945) was widely renowned for his iconic images of characters such as King Arthur, Robin Hood, and Robinson Crusoe that were reproduced as illustrations for books and magazines. The patriarch of the Wyeth family, father of Andrew Wyeth and grandfather of Jamie, he was also an artist with a broad purview whose work includes impressionist views of the Pennsylvania countryside and 1930s modernist interpretations of Maine coastal scenes. The book’s essays look at topics such as Wyeth’s contributions to the visual mythology of the American West, the darker nuances found in his Treasure Island illustrations, and correlations between his illustrations and cinema. Also explored is the way in which Wyeth’s own Chadds Ford properties reflect his conception of home and the role of the artist in American society. Complete with a detailed chronology, this carefully researched study of Wyeth’s life and work provides a long overdue assessment of the remarkable breadth of this complex yet often misunderstood artist.Published in association with the Brandywine River Museum of Art and the Portland Museum of ArtExhibition Schedule:Brandywine River Museum of Art, Chadds Ford, PA (06/22/19–09/15/19)Portland Museum of Art, ME (10/02/19–01/12/20)Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati (02/08/20–05/03/20)

Vehicule Press Hope That Remains: Canadian Survivors of the Rwandan Genocide
In 1994 one of the worst genocides in human history took place in Rwanda—more than one million people were killed in 100 days. Each chapter in The Hope That Remains focuses on a Rwandan survivor and the journey to escape the violence and chaos that overtook their country. Two of the featured stories follow individuals who fled before the killing began and the events that caused them to flee. Both were then faced with the challenge of being outsiders looking in as events deteriorated and their families were slaughtered. The other eight survivors share their detailed and gripping experiences of trying to stay alive while trapped in a nation of killers. Twenty-five years after the Rwandan Genocide, the scars are still very real, and rebuilding and coping with the trauma remains an emotional struggle. Despite their horrific pasts, the survivors share feelings of hope, forgiveness, and a belief in a better future. They demonstrate the strength and courage it takes to leave behind the known to seek a better life in a new country. Their journeys to Canada contain humorous moments, thoughtful insights, and an overwhelming love and pride for the nation they now call home.

Cornell University Press States United: A Survival Guide for Our Democracy
The Laurence and Lynne Brown Democracy Medal, presented by the McCourtney Institute for Democracy at Penn State, recognizes outstanding individuals, groups, and organizations that produce innovations to further democracy in the United States or around the world. Elections are the bedrock of any democracy, but they are under attack in the United States. State legislatures are moving to limit voting rights and seize control of election administration, candidates are refusing to accept election results, and antidemocracy forces are sowing lies and encouraging political violence. The States United Democracy Center is fighting back by equipping state and local officials, law enforcement leaders, and prodemocracy partners with the tools and resources they need to protect free, fair, and secure elections. For this important work, its cofounders are the recipients of the 2022 Brown Democracy Medal. States United was founded during the 2020 election and continues to be led by Joanna Lydgate, former chief deputy attorney general of Massachusetts; Norman Eisen, former ambassador to the Czech Republic and special assistant to President Barack Obama for ethics and government reform; and Christine Todd Whitman, former New Jersey governor and Environmental Protection Agency administrator.

Yale University Press Full House: One Space, Two Shows, 307 Artists, and 400 Pieces. From the Frederic de Goldschmidt Collection
A study of two exhibitions that took place five years apart in the same building in Brussels city-centreFull House explores two exhibitions that took place five years apart in the same building in Brussels and featured over 300 contemporary art works from the renowned collection of Frédéric de Goldschmidt. The first show, Not Really Really, was organized in 2016 in a building that had only been vacated a few months before by a mental health clinic. The works were mostly sculptures made with everyday objects and played with the ambiguity of what the last occupants could have left and what the artists purposefully created. The building then underwent a long renovation, with photos included illustrating this process. The second show, Inaspettatamente (Unexpectedly), then engaged with themes such as order and disorder, time, classification, the artist’s process or his/her position in world conflicts using the prism of the famous Arte Povera artist Alighiero Boetti. Curatorial texts and images of the works both in context and in studio allow the reader to discover and appreciate both exhibitions.Distributed for MercatorfondsExhibition Schedule:Cloud Seven, Quai du commerce 7 (November 11, 2021–January 30, 2022)

University of Washington Press Small States in International Relations
Smaller nations have a special place in the international system, with a striking capacity to defy the expectations of most observers and many prominent theories of international relations. This volume of classic essays highlights the ability of small states to counter power with superior commitment, to rely on tightly knit domestic institutions with a shared ideology of social partnership, and to set agendas as entrepreneurs. The volume is organised around themes such as how and why small states defy expectations of realist approaches to the study of power; the agenda-setting capacity of smaller powers in international society and in regional governance structures such as the European Union; and how small states and representatives from these societies play the role of entrepreneurs in world politics - from the promotion of sustainable solutions to innovative humanitarian programmes and policies.

University of Illinois Press Doing Women's Film History: Reframing Cinemas, Past and Future
Research into and around women's participation in cinematic history has enjoyed dynamic growth over the past decade. A broadening of scope and interests encompasses not only different kinds of filmmaking--mainstream fiction, experimental, and documentary--but also practices--publicity, journalism, distribution and exhibition--seldom explored in the past. Cutting-edge and inclusive, Doing Women's Film History ventures into topics in the United States and Europe while also moving beyond to explore the influence of women on the cinemas of India, Chile, Turkey, Russia, and Australia. Contributors grapple with historiographic questions that cover film history from the pioneering era to the present day. Yet the writers also address the very mission of practicing scholarship. Essays explore essential issues like identifying women's participation in their cinema cultures, locating previously unconsidered sources of evidence, developing methodologies and analytical concepts to reveal the impact of gender on film production, distribution and reception, and reframing film history to accommodate new questions and approaches. Contributors include: Kay Armatage, Eylem Atakav, Karina Aveyard, Canan Balan, Cécile Chich, Monica Dall'Asta, Eliza Anna Delveroudi, Jane M. Archaeopress Frontiers of the Roman Empire: The Antonine Wall – A World Heritage Site: Grenzen des Römischen Reiches: Der Antoninus Wall
The Antonine Wall lay at the very extremity of the Roman world. For a generation, in the middle of the second century AD, it was the north-west frontier of the Roman empire. Furthermore, it was one of only three “artificial” frontiers along the European boundaries of the empire: the other two are Hadrian’s Wall and the German Limes. Although the Antonine Wall fits into the general pattern of Roman frontiers, in many ways it was the most developed frontier in Europe, with certain distinct characteristics. Perhaps of greatest significance is the survival of the collection of Roman military sculpture, the Distance Slabs. These record the lengths constructed by each legion and their relationship to the labour camps allow further conclusions to be made about the work of constructing the Antonine Wall.

This number of the Journal of the ESWTR presents a good selection of the lectures and mini-lectures at the conference, which took place in the beach resort of Vico Equense (south of Naples, Italy) from 29 August to 2 September 2007. It was organised by Adriana Valerio, then president of the ESWTR. The articles restore the pluralist perspectives on the topic: "Becoming living communities" across many places, places where women live in families and cities, study the scriptures and traditions, and inhabit the churches. In the event, the three perspectives proved to intersect, showing how well chosen this approach was.

Emerald Publishing Limited International Perspectives on Gender and Higher Education: Student Access and Success
Despite improved access to higher education for women, the distribution of women and men varies considerably between different fields of study. The chapters in this edited collection explore the participation status of women in higher education across the varying socio-economic and sociological backgrounds observed in different countries and regions. Diving into the differing social and state intervention policies, individual motives of participation and additional gender inequalities including regional and ethnic disparities, this book offers readers a better understanding of the drivers of gendered trends in higher education, such as the evidently low presence of women in certain scientific and technical disciplines. The analysis focuses on the social construction of gender differences, as well as the roles played by the economy, culture, religion, legal background, and the internal dynamics of society. Ultimately, this book provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments concerning the presence of women in higher education in both developed and developing countries, resulting in a clear picture of the current situation, and how the future might look.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Perspectives on Contemporary Professional Work: Challenges and Experiences
This is an exciting collection that provides a very good feel for the intellectual vigour that characterizes work on the contemporary professions. The book brings together an international team of multidisciplinary scholars who analyze professional work in the context of some of the big social science debates of our age, including managerialism, mobilities, globalization and the impact of information technology. This is an exciting field of study and this book contributes to this excitement.'- Daniel Muzio, Newcastle University and Editor Journal of Professions and Organization'In modern societies, professions are the primary remaining manifestation of a pre-industrial occupation-based approach to shaping and giving meaning to work. But the principles of contemporary professionalism operate in constant tension with the bureaucratic or corporate principles that dominate modern societies. Perspectives on Contemporary Professional Work cannot be bettered as an insightful, informed and rewarding examination of what the playing out of these tensions means for societies, organisations and individual 'professionals'.'- Tony Watson, Nottingham University Business School, UKHow is the world of professions and professional work changing? This book offers both an overview of current debates surrounding the nature of professional work, and the implications for change brought about by the managerialist agenda. The relationships professionals have with their organizations are variable, indeterminate and uncertain, and there is still debate over the ways in which these should be characterized and theorized. The contributors discuss these implications with topics including hybrid organizations and hybrid professionalism; the changing nature of professional and managerial work; profession and identity; and the emergence of HRM as a new managerial profession. This book will be of interest to academics and postgraduate students seeking a comparative study on contemporary professional work. It will also be of use to a number of practitioners, namely human resource managers, looking for ways in which to approach the changing professional world.Contributors: P. Ackers, M. Avery, J. Floris Books Sources of Christianity: Peter, Paul and John
The three apostles Peter, Paul and John are the most important starting point for understanding the beginnings of Christianity. Each brings a different background and language: Peter's Old Testament imagery, Paul's connection with Greek culture, and John's independent lyricism. This fascinating book paints a vivid picture of the three, exploring what they had in common as well as their significant differences, and demonstrating their continuing relevance today. The authors start by discussing the pre-Christian context, and finish by tracing the esoteric streams of Petrine, Pauline and Johannine Christianity in the first few centuries after Christ. They show above all that all three are needed to truly approach the reality of Jesus Christ.
