For centuries, fame and fortune was to be found in India. In the 16th and 17th centuries, India called out to those in search of riches and adventure. The British were the last European Nation to sail to India to trade. The British Empire in India began with the East India Company, incorporated in 1600 by the Royal Charter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I, to trade with India. In two centuries, the East India Company became Master of a vast country, by extortion, doublespeak and outright corruption, backed by violence and superior force composed of Indians.The British had come as adventurers but found the lure of this country too strong not to adopt to some customs and traditions of local population. In military organizations the British initially adopted the system of allowing Kings to rule but appointed British Regents. The history of the 3rd Battalion shifts the centre of gravity of success onto the Indian Officers who being `waffadar` rode the tide to establish the British Empire in India. The British were ruthless in ensuring discipline and fidelity. The book is set in chronological order as events unfolded, but also narrates events and draws some important lessons out of it.The Battalion within a month of raising was put to test at Pritchetgarh. It was actively involved in eliminating the remnants of the Peshwa Army. The Battalion was used to suppress and bring Gujarat and Kutch under control of the British Empire. Maharaja Gaekwad of Baroda was Browbeaten. The Battalion formed part of the Army of the Indus. It primarily secured the Sindh and kept the Amirs of Sindh under control. It was here that battalion marched 40 miles within 24 hours to ensure Sher Mohamed, the `Lion of Manipur` withdrew his force from Tatta.The battalion participated in the Persian Campaign of 1856 in the Battles of Bushire and Khushab. In 185, the Battalion was at Satara and ensured no rebellion takes place. For its loyalty the battalion was designated `Waffadar Paltan`.The battalion saw action in China during the Boxer rebellion and in Aden. It also had the privilege of hosting His Royal Highness Prince of Wales, in 1875. The battalion participated in Mesopotamia and then in North West Persia during World War I. The Battalion participated in the Coronation Hockey Tournament and was runner up. Musketry had always been its core strength. The recruiting base of the battalion kept on changing as the British Empire expanded. From Marathi and Konkanis, the recruitment base expanded to Rajputs, Muslims from Gujarat and Central India.The book extensively covers the structure changes such as double battalion, double companies, linked battalions, mounted infantry, camp followers.There is enough fresh scholarship and exploration of the pain and joy in accomplishment of a mission. Non-tariff measures (NTMs) have become increasingly important in international trade as tariffs get limited by the WTO. More and more creativity is being used by countries to regulate trade in sectors of national interest and stay WTO compliant at the same time. This volume is an attempt to develop a more nuanced understanding of China's foreign, security and economic policies by bringing together perspectives from two of its most important neighbours, India and Vietnam. This is a unique exercise because these two countries have a long history of both contending and cooperating with the People's Republic of China. Even as India's boundary dispute and Vietnam's maritime territorial disputes with China have persisted, both countries have, in recent decades, also managed to successfully develop close economic relations with their northern neighbour as well as cooperated extensively with Beijing on regional and global issues of significance and mutual interest. Yet, the growth of China's capabilities and ambitions, and the decline of its impulse towards multilateralism present challenges for India and Vietnam in their neighbourhood. On 8 August 2008, what started as a provoked assault by Georgia against the separatist regime of South Ossetia quickly developed into a short armed conflict between Russia and Georgia. The Georgians had miscalculated when they attacked South Ossetia's capital, Tskhinvali, while Russia took the conflict to another level by bombing and invading Georgia proper. The five-day military conflict challenged the geopolitical setting of the Caucasus region. The complex and multifaceted nature of this conflict has important implications for regional and international power politics. The decisive military move by Russia was the first of its kind, beyond Russian borders, since the Afghan war of the 1970's and 1980's. The war apparently served to restore Moscow's control over the geopolitically crucial region of the South Caucasus, which is enormously important for Europe since it enables the transportation of Caspian oil to the West. However, it also raised critical questions over the tension between Russian identity and other ethnic groups living in the Caucasus region; nationalistic rhetoric within the domestic politics of Russia and Georgia; the role of the United States in the region where important allies are expecting NATO membership; and finally, the image of Russia as a resurgent Great Power. This book discusses what motivated Russia and Georgia to believe that a war was necessary to meet their national interests and how critical was the influence of domestic politics in making those decisions? He played a leading role in bringing about Morley-Minto Reforms, the beginning of constitutional reforms. It is noteworthy that this book is being published in the centenary year of Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa. Gokhale’s death centenary was on 19 February 2015, while his 150th birth anniversary is next year.

Russia is an old and tested friend but its closeness with China in recent years and its newfound fascination for Pakistan have created a dent in the Indian mind in its trustworthiness.As far as India`s neighbours are concerned, they have been always regarded as reliable partners in India`s security architecture. As per an estimate, a third of cases pending in Indian courts involve dispute over property. Some experts have the view that India should switch over from deed registration system to title registration system to solve the problem of ever increasing land disputes. The Department of Land Resources, Government of India, also subscribed to this view and listed ‘moving eventually towards guaranteed conclusive titles to immovable properties in the country’ as one of the objectives of the National Land Records Modernization Program (NLRMP) launched in 2008. In spite of this policy, not much headway was made by the states in this direction.
