Britain's conduct for World War I was based upon international coalitions, paritcularly her partnership with France. This drew Britain into war, since French defeat would fatally upset the European balance of power. The allies' relationship was, however, often stormy, but Britain's primary goal was its preservation. Ironically, it was an operation which had little effect on the outcome of the war that posed the greatest threat - the "Salonika campaign", showing the allies' conduct at its worst. Here the Anglo-French sources achived little, but the diversion seriously weakened the armies on the Western Front. Drawing on previously unopened archive material, this work shows the campaign as central to the war-time alliance, and the issues revealed transcend the importance of the Balkan campaign itself.

Detective Jaswinder Singh, a Metropolitan Police Officer, has returned to work from gardening leave. Taking advantage of Derek being away Jazz decides to go undercover in the club to see what he can find out. This alerts MI6 and it would appear that a large undercover operation was about to take place and Derek was under scrutiny as a potential traitor. Now established in the mess and causing chaos for MI6, Jazz is incorporated into their strategy for the operation but told to keep out of the way. This is never going to happen, and the unorthodox, fearless and some would say stupid, Jazz must now take on MI6, an S&M club and a terrorist group each one of them potentially out to kill him. An enormous cast of characters emerges as Kraft appropriates images and texts from an extraordinary variety of sources (the Amar Chitra Katha comics of Hindu mythology, Jimmy Swaggart's Old and New Testament stories, the 1960s English football annual Scorcher, underground porn comics like Cherry, images from art history, outdated encyclopedias and more). Kraft constructs a world constantly in flux, rich with dark humor and revelatory nonsense. Writer Danielle Dutton's set of 16 interpolations punctuate the book using similar strategies of appropriation and juxtaposition to create texts that sing in the same arresting register as Kraft's collages. The Towneley plays remain fertile ground for further research, and this blanket-tossing farce illuminates a key scene of the well-known Second Shepherd's Play. Ben Jonson is overshadowed as a dramatist by Shakespeare, his great contemporary. As a poet, however, he stands high. Eliot says Jonson "incorporated his erudition into his sensibility", creatively assimilating Horace, Martial and Juvenal into his poetry and hence into English literature. Richard Dutton's introduction illuminates the structure and context of Jonson's "Epigrams" and "The Forest".
