The History Press Ltd John Lennon: pocket GIANTS
John Lennon is a giant of popular music and culture. As one-quarter of the Beatles, he was in the vanguard of music, art, fashion and popular culture during the sixties. His music, humour and outspoken calls for peace inspired a generation. He stands as an iconic figure for those who lived through the sixties and seventies, as well as for those who grew up long after his untimely death in 1980. Above all, Lennon was one of the twentieth century’s greatest and most important songwriters. Songs he wrote with Paul McCartney, such as ‘She Loves You’ and ‘A Day in the Life’, define an era. Others he wrote alone, such as ‘God’, ‘Help!’ and ‘Revolution’, betray an often complex, contradictory and troubled character. Lennon was never one to hide his love away, nor his anger, nor his convictions. In 2000 his anthem ‘Imagine’ was voted the song of the millennium.

The History Press Ltd Isaac Newton: pocket GIANTS
Isaac Newton had an extraordinary idea. He believed the physical universe and everything in it could be described in exact detail using mathematical relationships. He formulated a law of gravity that explained why objects fall downwards, how the moon causes the tides, and why planets and comets orbit the sun. While Newton’s work has been added to over the years, his basic approach remains at the heart of the scientific worldview. Yet Newton’s own had little in common with that of a modern scientist. He believed the universe was created to a precise and rational design – a design that was fully understood by the earliest people. Over time this knowledge was lost, and Newton considered it his life’s work to rediscover it, whether through applied mathematics or a painstaking study of the Bible and other ancient texts. In chasing his impossible goal, Newton managed to contribute more to our understanding of the universe than anyone else in history.Andrew May went to the same Cambridge college, Trinity, as Sir Isaac Newton. After gaining his first degree in Natural Sciences he went on to do a PhD in astrophysics at Manchester University. This was on the subject of galactic dynamics, and the only physics he needed to know he was a Newtonian. He continued as a postdoc in the same area for four years, before moving into the more lucrative if shadowy world of defence science. He worked first in private industry, then in the Civil Service and then in private industry again, for a total of 24 years. He now earns his living as a freelance writer and defence consultant.

The History Press Ltd King Arthur: pocket GIANTS
Why is King Arthur a giant? Because his story has had such strong influences on our understanding of the history of Europe and the English-speaking world. Because the debate about Arthur as a historical figure has been central to understanding the fall of Roman Britain and the formation of England for much of the last 1,300 years. Because Arthur is one of the best-known kings in world history, whose reign was viewed as a golden age, an epoch in which to centre tales of right and wrong, of faith and faithlessness, and of courage and falseness, the moral and spiritual values of which continue to resonate today not least among those who dismiss Arthur as a late literary construct. Because an understanding of Arthur and all the different things he has meant to scores of generations up to the present is fundamental to our understanding of our own past, our understanding of ourselves and the ways in which we can benefit from history.

The History Press Ltd Henry Ford: pocket GIANTS
Why is Henry Ford a giant? Because he put the world on wheels. Henry Ford did not invent the motor car, nor for all the claims did he invent the assembly line or mass production. But more than anyone before or since he is remembered as the man who almost singlehandedly took an expensive contraption of doubtful utility and recast it as a machine which in a real and profound sense changed the world forever. In an industry with many giants –André Citroen, Louis Renault and Giovanni Agnelli of Fiat – Henry Ford stands tallest as the greatest ever motor mogul. A Michigan farmer’s son who became a dollar billionaire, a ruthlessly single-minded autocrat who became a folk hero, a pacifist who went on to inspire Adolf Hitler - he was a boss who paid his workers twice as much as his competitors yet waged an unrelenting war on unions and badly abused the power he had worked so hard to attain. David Long has been an author and journalist for thirty years, and has regularly appeared in The Times, Sunday Times and many magazines, here and abroad. He is a celebrated author of over twenty titles and has ghostwritten many more.

At 19, Isambard Kingdom Brunel was in charge, under his father, of an engineering work that is the wonder of Europe: the Thames tunnel, completed in 1843. Rolt was one of the first narrative historians, an industrial pioneer and preservationist. During his life he was fundamental in establishing and promoting canals, waterways and railways. He was one of the first people in modern Britain to draw attention to the value of our canals as a means of transport and a source of pleasure. O'Reilly Media CVS Pocket Reference
The beauty of open source is making code freely available. The curse is trying to organize the chaos that code development can evolve into. CVS, the Concurrent Version System, is an open source tool for managing and distributing source code. It allows multiple users dispersed over a wide geographic area to work on the same file at the same time, using a shared directory. Under CVS, multiple users can check out files from a directory tree, make changes, and then commit those changes back into the directory. CVS is a pivotal tool on many projects involving information or software, whether in-house or conducted over the Internet. The "CVS Pocket Reference" is a quick reference guide to help administrators and users set up and manage source code development. This book delivers the core concepts of version control along with a complete command reference and guide to configuration and repository set up. The book includes: a version control primer that teaches the general concepts of version control and how it applies to CVS; instructions on how to install and configure CVS for Unix -like operating systems; administrator and user sections, with complete listings of their respective commands and options for configuring and using CVS; details on how to import files from RCS and SCCS directories into CVS.; and references to related useful materials. Much more than a quick list of commands and options, the book is packed with detail - including an overview of background concepts, thorough descriptions on how to use and administer a CVS repository, and discussions of CVS-related files and how to manage them - all in a convenient reference format. This edition covers the CVS 1.11 and includes new commands for querying a central CVS repository, new configuration parameters, and new options for setting up a server for remote access. It also contains tips on common tasks, such as converting projects from other revision control formats to CVS.

Oxford University Press A Pocket Philosophical Dictionary
'What can you say to a man who tells you he prefers obeying God rather than men, and that as a result he's certain he'll go to heaven if he cuts your throat?' Voltaire's Pocket Philosophical Dictionary, first published in 1764, is a major work of the European Enlightenment. It is also a highly entertaining book: this is no 'dictionary' in the ordinary sense, nor does it treat 'philosophy' in the modern meaning of the term. It consists of a sequence of short essays or articles, arranged in alphabetical order, and covering everything from Apocalypse and Atheism to Tolerance and Tyranny. The unifying thread of these articles is Voltaire's critique of established religion: ridicule of established dogma, attacks on superstition, and pleas for toleration. Witty and ironic, this is very much a work of combat, part of Voltaire's high-profile political struggle in the 1760s to defend the victims of religious and political intolerance. This new translation is based on the definitive French text, and reprints the edition that provoked widespread controversy and condemnation. In his Introduction Nicholas Cronk considers the work's continuing relevance to modern debates about religious intolerance and its consequences. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Beaufort Books Pocket Full of Poseys
Grace Tingley and Brian Posey are forty-something twins whose lives have gone in very different directions. Grace is a private school teacher in coastal Connecticut, Brian an adventure travel executive in Seattle. Grace nearly won a Rhodes Scholarship at Princeton and was a PhD candidate at Yale when an unexpected pregnancy threw her plans into a tailspin. Brian barely scraped through an obscure New England college and recently married Ella, a lively, pot-smoking realtor, after three years in an intimate relationship with a charismatic man from Jamaica. When their mother Cinny, a widowed charter member of Woodstock Nation, is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, she opts for an early exit from life and stops eating. Grace and Brian are there for her last days in hospice care, where they learn Cinny has plans for them after she’s gone. They’re to sprinkle her ashes, mixed with their father’s, at a series of exotic locations around the globe—some remote, some challengingly public, all known and loved by the Poseys.Joined by Grace’s husband Jack, a “recovering good ol’ boy lawyer” from Clearwater, their daughter Chelsea, recently moved in with a widower twenty years her senior, Ella, and Ella’s daughter Sage, a self-described “sixteen-year-old nihilistic feminist socialist,” Grace and Brian set off around the globe on a funereal odyssey that teaches them more about their parents’ relationship and about themselves than they find it easy to accept.By turns hilarious, profound, jarring, and poignant, Pocket Full of Poseys bounds dizzily through New Zealand, Thailand, Italy, Switzerland, and England before pulling off at a rest area on the New Jersey Turnpike, as the last of Cinny Posey’s secrets are revealed and her survivors confront the strength of the ties that bind them all together—for worse and for better.
