This is a book that draws together the main influences that have resulted in the impressive emergence of business schools in the UK is badly needed. This book tries to fill this gap by identifying the main institutions and individuals involved. There is minimal overlap with other scholarly works, such as those tracing the development of management thought and critiques of the products of business schools. The American influence on the development of UK business schools is acknowledged, but the emphasis in the book is on UK contributions. Part 1 is an historic overview identifying the milestones in the last two centuries, with particular attention being paid to the twentieth century. The impressive growth of management education in the last fifty years would not have taken place without the creation of supportive institutions. Through their regulatory and informative roles these institutions ensured that growth was accompanied by high standards in teaching and research, thus enabling business schools to make effective contributions to the social and economic needs of society. These supportive institutions for example the Association of Business Schools and the Association of MBAs are discussed in Part 2, as are the professional institutions associated with business and management education for example the Chartered Management Institute and the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development). Part 3 focuses on the growth of knowledge-based management education, and illustrates how systematic research has contributed to the content and methods of management education. The historical roles of academic and applied bodies such as the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, the Association of Teachers of Management and the British Academy of Management are discussed. Part 4 focuses on the national and international standing of UK business schools. Trends in the quality ratings of business schools, as revealed by various public assessments and media rankings are explored. A selection of business school histories are examined in an effort to identify factors that have influenced their chosen strategies and subsequent development.

Ground-breaking study of the enigmatic and unique tabernacles from fourteenth-century Italy, which for the first time combined relics and images. Images and relics were central tools in the process of devotional practice in medieval Europe. The reliquary tabernacles that emerged in the 1340s, in the area of Central Italy surrounding the city of Siena, combined images and relics, presented visibly together, within painted and decorated wooden frames. In these tabernacles the various media and materials worked together to create a powerful and captivating ensemble, usable in several contexts, both in procession and static, as the centre of focussed, prayerful attention. This book looks at Siena and Central Italy as environments of artistic invention, and at Sienese painters in particular as experts in experimentation whose ingenuity encouraged the development of this new form of devotional technology. It is the first full-length study to focus in depth on the materiality of these tabernacles, investigating the connotations and effects of the materials from which they were made. It examines especially the effect of bringing relics and images together, and considers how the impressions of variety and abundance created by the multiplication of materials give birth to meaning and encourage certain kinds of action or thought.

The excavations at these cemeteries provide a full range of X-Group objects, dated to the fourth through sixth centuries a.d. Of special interest is the military equipment, including many decorated quivers, parts of several unusual light composite bows, and a saddle date to the late fourth century. The most important discoveries were the complexes of chapels and animal sacrifice pits found beside royal tombs at Qustul. The arrangement of these Noubadian royal funerary complexes can be related to others in Sudan indicating the existence of a widespread and long-lasting funerary tradition.

A number of burials excavated by the Oriental Institute Nubian Expedition revealed pottery, objects, and burial customs that are dated to the Twenty-fifth Dynasty and Napatan periods (ca. 750-200 b.c.), a poorly known phase in Lower Nubia. The rulers of this great age of Kush left monuments in the region, but almost nothing could be found of the ordinary people. The burials are compared with others published from the region to reconstruct a substantial period of settlement in Lower Nubia.

This volume, the second to publish the results of Seele's two seasons of excavations in Nubia, presents Neolithic, A-Group, and Post-A-Group remains from Qustul, Ballana, and Adindan. Neolithic remains were only found in a cave behind the village of Adindan and consist of sherds, some implements, a human skull, and fragments of decorated ostrich eggshell. The cave is comparable to caves found deep in Sudan and represents a northern extension of the cultures well known in the area of the second cataract. Also included in this volume are A-Group remains from cemeteries other than Cemetery L and Post-A-Group remains from two burials, dated between the end of A-Group and the beginning of C-Group, that can be compared with others in the region to identify a limited occupation in a period where none has been thought to exist in recent years.
