Hillside Publications Harrogate & Nidderdale
This new title is one of the first two in an updated series of Paul Hannon's `Short Scenic Walks' guidebooks. The principle feature is that all walks are less than five miles in length, offering a perfect half day's stroll for families, casual walkers and all who want to enjoy a leisurely exploration of Britain's outstanding country landscapes. A range of enhancements include a wider geographical spread, in this case merging - with full revision, two popular titles which are now out of print. The walks start from such places as Harrogate, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge and Ripon, and include such iconic landmarks as How Stean Gorge, Brimham Rocks, Studley Royal, Almscliff Crag, the Nidd Gorge and the Washburn Valley. In addition to being more visually appealing than their predecessors, with a more modern house style, this new series offers 30 walks rather than 20, and these more substantial books feature a full spine rather than wire-stitched binding. Over 30 colour photographs depict features and landscapes along the routes.

Hillside Publications Coast to Coast Walk: The Classic Walk Across Northern England
This is the long-awaited brand new edition of what was the first guidebook to this classic walk since the Wainwright original. The Coast to Coast Walk has enjoyed a greater surge in popularity since recent TV exposure, and remains Britain's favourite long-distance walk. Savour 192 glorious miles from St Bees on the Cumbrian Coast to Robin Hood's Bay on the Yorkshire Coast, passing through the unparalleled grandeur of three National Parks. The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors provide an endless array of attractions, and together create what can be the walk of a lifetime. After a re-survey of the entire route in Spring 2010, a wealth of changes and improvements to an already well-used guide sees the Hannon version return to the top of the pile. Re-drawn colour maps make the book even easier to use in the field, while a stunning collection of more than 100 full colour photographs depict the countless memorable features and landscapes along the way. The book has been extended by 16 further pages to improve the layout and content. As always, concise route descriptions are complemented by a veritable wealth of background information, along with an extensive introductory section dealing with planning the walk, including useful addresses, contacts and essential services; also an extremely useful log section.

Hillside Publications Dales Way: 80 Miles Through the Yorkshire Dales: 2012
This is a brand new edition of one of the first guidebooks to this classic walk. "The Dales Way" is one of Britain's favourite long-distance walks, running from Ilkley in Wharfedale, through the Yorkshire Dales National Park to a delightful conclusion on the shores of Windermere in the Lake District National Park. At 80 miles in length and generally easy going, the "Dales Way" makes an ideal introduction to long-distance walking, being comfortably walkable within a week's holiday. It is well waymarked throughout and spends many miles on delectable riverbanks and passing through some archetypal Dales villages. An additional bonus is that each end of the route is accessible by rail. After a re-survey of the entire route in Spring 2012, numerous changes and improvements have been made to this already well-used guide, which now includes a stunning collection of more than 50 full colour photographs depicting the countless memorable features and landscapes along the way. The three link routes from Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate are also described. University College Dublin Press Gaelic Games, Nationalism and the Irish Diaspora in the United States
Gaelic sports have been played for over a century in America, and provide a revealing window into the lives and culture of the Irish community there. Much has been written about the ways that the successes of their politicians, the efforts of the Catholic Church and the solace, identity and friendships offered by a whole range of their social, political and charitable organisations helped the Irish adapt to life in urban America. Far less has been said though about the role of sport, let alone Gaelic games, in allowing them to make sense of their new surroundings and deal with the rigours of adjusting to and progressing in the New World. "Gaelic Games, Nationalism and the Irish Diaspora in the United States" redresses this neglect by uncovering the origins and development of Gaelic sport and by exploring the political, economic and social impact that the GAA has had on Irish communities in America. New York, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, cities that were not only focal points of Irish immigration but were also the main centres of GAA activity in the US, are taken as case studies. The book draws on detailed archival research, interviews with leading figures in the GAA in America and contains a selection of rare photographs of clubs, teams and players of significance which help to bring to life a remarkable story of cultural preservation, persistence and passion for Gaelic games.

Free Association Books Counselling for Depression
Written by the author of the best-selling Counselling Heroin and Other Drug Users and Counselling Women in Violent Relationships, this book is another highly practical guide for therapists and those who are seeking to help depressed people. Paul Lockley shows how to employ techniques which open up life again for the depressed. His method requires the active participation of depressed clients for a successful outcome. Lockley explores the cognitive aspects of depression, how feelings affect the thinking process, and thinking influences feelings. He views depression as a continuum, ranging from mild feelings of being unnaturally 'down' to the disabling severe clinical state. This absence of labeling allows clients to help themselves through taking greater control of their situation. The therapist becomes the enabler to the client, who learns to work constructively within a gradually expanding environment. Enabling self-help begins with ensuring that clients are well informed about their condition, able to normalise rather than to 'psychiatrise' it. They are also helped to work towards accepting their feelings and learning how best to deal with them on a day-to-day basis. The book discusses the sometimes unhelpful modification of feelings through the use of alcohol or drugs. Practical measures are explained whereby clients can help themselves through work at home, doing their own exercises of relaxation, guided imagination, and journal work. Tackling depression should be supplemented, where relevant, by more specific counselling for past abuse, loss or grief. Work, family and personal stress should also reviewed be as possible contributory factors. This book is drawn from Paul Lockley's extensive experience in counselling for depression. It is both informative and inspiring.

ACC Art Books Festival of Britain 1951: Design
Inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Festival of Britain followed soon after the austerity of the war years. The major events were focused around the twenty-seven-acre bomb site around Waterloo Station, although events happened throughout the UK. The Festival was almost immediately unfashionable amongst commentators. It was viewed with suspicion by political conservatives and quickly dismantled. An establishment orthodoxy quickly emerged that called into question the Festival's objectives. This political ambivalence towards the Festival is confounded by the popularity of the Festival amongst collectors, social historians and anybody interested in post-war British culture and society. This book is the first to present the story of the Festival of Britain, held in 1951, through its souvenirs. These objects were produced to commemorate The Tonic to the Nation. Retrospectively, they testify to the enormous popular appeal of the Festival. Festival of Britain 1951, the most recent addition to

Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Planning and Participation
Why should the public participate in planning? And who are the stakeholders who are required to participate in the planning process? This guide assesses public and stakeholder participation in the planning process, which is a statutory requirement across the entire scope and scale of planning activities in many global contexts. It provides a historical overview of participation and outlines how this has evolved over time. It then outlines a series of key issues for the contemporary planning professional in terms of their approach to public and stakeholder participation, particularly in light of alterations in landscapes of governance and recent social, political and technological developments. Illustrated with mostly UK and European case studies, but also drawing insights from further afield, the book also provides a framework for critiquing contemporary participation, including an assessment of the pitfalls, obstacles and unintended consequences of participation efforts. As such, it identifies key principles for participation and asks critical questions for its assessment.

A secret that links two great chefs, separated from each other by 250 years. When the manuscript's new owner realises what she has discovered, she returns with it to modern-day Thailand, awakening long-dormant ancient spirits. But when the manuscript escapes Siam once more, a new trail of destruction is created in its wake. How far would you go to own the Imperial secrets?

''Highly readable ... Everything we need to know on this subject'' Financial TimesA population calamity is unfolding before our eyes. It started in parts of the developed world and is spreading to the four corners of the globe. There are just too few babies being born for humanity to replace itself.Leading demographer Paul Morland argues that the consequences of this promise to be calamitous. Labour shortages, pensions crises, ballooning debt: what is currently happening in South Korea which faces population decline of more than 85% within just two generations - threatens to engulf us all, and sooner than we think. In the developed world we may be able temporarily to stave off the worst of its effects with immigration, but many countries, including those the immigrants come from, will get old before they get rich.No One Left charts this future, explains its causes and suggests what might be done. Globe Law and Business Ltd Patent Enforcement in the UK and Trans-Pacific Countries
In September 2020 the UK signed its first major free trade deal as an independent country outside the EU, with Japan. This deal is viewed by the UK government as the first step in joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a free trade agreement between Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Further, Joe Biden’s presidency is expected to result in the United States joining the partnership and, with the US and the UK, the CPTPP would be the largest free trade bloc by GDP in the world. Where there is close trade between countries regulated by a free trade agreement, there is also the need for rigorous intellectual property, in particular patent protection, especially in the pharmaceutical, biotech and telecoms sectors. Companies need to know: • that their technology will be protected; • the scope of that protection; and • how it can be enforced. In particular, this book will provide readers with a structured account of the relevant enforcement procedures and substantive patent law in each country, enabling a quick compare and contrast to be made between countries and the identification of relevant issues. In-depth country chapters featured include: US, Japan, South Korea, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand. Patent Enforcement in the UK and Trans-Pacific Countries is an essential guide for private practitioners, in-house lawyers and other professionals with responsibility for intellectual property who are interested in the Trans-Pacific region.

Facet Publishing A Practical Guide to Privacy in Libraries
Privacy is a core value of librarianship and yet as a concept, it is difficult to define and in practice, a challenge to uphold. This groundbreaking new book considers how privacy issues can arise in a library context and what library and information professionals can do to protect the privacy of their users. A Practical Guide to Privacy in Libraries features a wide range of practical examples of such issues, providing insights and practical steps which readers can follow. In-depth case studies and scenarios support the examples laid out in the book, while examples of data breaches which have occurred in a library setting, and the lessons we can learn from them, are also included. The book also covers the main legislation governing data protection – GDPR – which will be particularly relevant to European librarians, and international librarians offering services to EU citizens. The book provides a range of tools through which libraries can communicate how they handle the personal data of their users whilst ensuring that they are following best practice with their privacy policy statements, their privacy audits and data protection impact assessments. Privacy is not the same thing as data protection, and the book outlines the differences between these two concepts. Nevertheless, the book has been written with the requirements of data protection law very much in mind.Written in a highly practical manner, this book is essential reading for library and information professionals who need to understand and support privacy in the library setting and a useful reference for students and researchers in the field who need to understand this topic in practice.

The New Press Berlin Calling: A Story of Anarchy, Music, the Wall, and the Birth of the New Berlin
An exhilarating journey through the subcultures, the occupied squats, and late-night scenes in the anarchic first few years of Berlin after the fall of the Wall Berlin Calling is a never-before-told account of the Berlin Wall’s momentous crash, seen through the eyes of the divided city’s street artists and punk rockers, impresarios and underground agitators. Berlin-based writer Paul Hockenos offers us an original chronicle of 1989’s “peaceful revolution,” which upended communism in East Germany, and the wild, permissive years of artistic ferment and pirate utopias that followed when protest and idealism, techno clubs and sprawling squats were the order of the day. This is a story stocked with larger-than-life characters from Berlin’s highly political subcultures—including David Bowie and Iggy Pop, the internationally known French Wall artist Thierry Noir, cult figure Blixa Bargeld of the industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten, and a clandestine cell of East Berlin anarchists. Hockenos argues that the do-it-yourself energy and raw urban vibe of the early 1990s shaped the new Berlin and still pulses through the city today.

PublicAffairs,U.S. The Birth of the West: Rome, Germany, France, and the Creation of Europe in the Tenth Century
Stimulating, encyclopaedic, and often downright funny, this is a book worth remembering." , Stephen O'Shea, Globe and Mail (Toronto, Canada) A lively, full-to-bursting history of the turbulent tenth century in Europe, . Collins presents chaotic upheaval across Europe in an organized and riveting fashion." , Kirkus (starred review)The tenth century dawned in violence and disorder. Charlemagne's empire was in ruins, most of Spain had been claimed by Moorish invaders, and even the papacy in Rome was embroiled in petty, provincial conflicts. The stability once provided by Imperial Rome had dissolved, leaving a perilous landscape behind. Yet the story of the tenth century is the story of our culture's birth. This was the moment that civilization emerged from the Dark Ages into the light of day.The Birth of the West tells the story of a transformation from chaos to order, exploring the alien landscape of Europe in transition. It thoroughly renovates older conceptions of feudalism and what medieval life was actually like. The result is a wholly-new vision of how civilization sprang from the unlikeliest of origins, and proof that our tenth-century ancestors are not as remote as we might think. The Birth of the West is a re-making of what we think we know about the end of the Dark Ages. It is also the gate to the utterly unexpected cosmos of European forebears., The characters who people The Birth of the West are as familiar as relatives,as indeed they are, groping their way to a cohesive Western culture. The Birth of the West is thus the tale of our birth, and Collins tells it with a narrative grace and elegance which will make readers cherish it." , Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler's Ark

Manchester University Press Wild Arabs and Savages: A History of Juvenile Justice in Ireland
This book is the first history of the Irish juvenile justice system. It charts the emergence of the system from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. From the beginning, the system was dominated by a large network of reformatory and industrial schools which incarcerated tens of thousands of children and remained in existence into the late twentieth century. This dominance was eventually challenged by emerging discourses which emanated from the psychological sciences, social work, youth work and the children’s rights movement. The book draws from a wide range of official and unofficial sources in exploring the key rationalities underpinning the system. In adopting a governmentality approach, it also examines the technologies and forms of childhood identity that are employed to govern the child and young person within the context of the Irish juvenile justice system. This unique and original approach will appeal to legal scholars, criminologists and those with an interest in juvenile justice, history and social policy.

Globe Pequot Press Movie Dad: Finding Myself and My Family, On Screen and Off
Paul Dooley has been an actor for sixty-five years and has portrayed fathers in more than twenty-five movies. He is best known for his roles as the father in Breaking Away, Sixteen Candles, and Run Away Bride. While he was the on-screen dad to Julia Roberts, Molly Ringwald, Toni Collette, Robin Wright, and Helen Hunt, his personal life held a painful secret. In Movie Dad, Dooley reveals that before he became a father to Hollywood actresses, his own fatherhood was jeopardized when his ex-wife kidnapped his two children, Robin and Adam. His touching biography shows the shock and denial he experienced when he read the letter his ex-wife left that said, “I’m leaving. I’m taking the kids. We’re not coming back.” What followed was private detectives, court, and frantically looking for his children. When he only found dead-ends, he threw himself into work, and after twenty-five years as an actor, he was in the movies overnight. The success he found as a father on-screen is a story of wry irony, which he tells in Movie Dad.
